What to Expect
After meeting your guide in Byron Bay, get outfitted with a paddle, safety vest, and a two-person sea kayak that’s designed for ease and stability. Then, following your guide, head out into Cape Byron Marine Park. As you paddle, see the historic Cape Byron Light—Australia’s most powerful lighthouse—and learn about the area’s cultural and Aboriginal history from your guide. Navigate toward the local pod of more than 300 dolphins that inhabit the area, and enjoy an amazingly up-close experience with these smart, playful marine mammals in their natural habitat. Spot other marine life such as sea turtles and migrating humpback whales (which appear from May to November) as well. Before returning to Byron Bay, stop at a lovely beach for tea with light snacks. Note that on the off-chance that you don’t encounter any dolphins, you can take the tour again on another day free of charge.

This was disappointing. Lots of fluffing around, and when we did see dolphins we had to stop super fast away from them which meant we didn't really see them properly. Lots of sitting around on the kayak with the tour guide blabbing about property value and all sorts of random

Response from capebyronkayaks, Owner at Kayaking with Dolphins in Byron Bay

Hi Anne I am sorry you were disappointed with your tour with us. I am not sure what you mean by “fluffing around”? We must go through all paddle instruction and safety procedures thoroughly. Our tour guides share knowledge and information about the history and geography of the area as we paddle from Clarkes Beach, out to Middle Reef and then to Wategos where we encounter the dolphins. Sorry you found this “useless chatting” and “blabbing” boring but plenty of customers like to learn a little bit about our spectacular area and the marine park. I was there on the day you came on our tour. I was at Wategos and saw your encounter with dolphins. When I returned to Clarkes Beach, I was talking to the owner of the other kayak company and I said to him that both our groups were getting a really good show. So, again, I am not sure what you mean by “we didn’t really see them properly?” All the other customers I spoke to at the end of the tour were thrilled with their dolphin experience. The Biodiversity Conservation Regulation 2017 protects marine mammals such as whales, dolphins, and seals while allowing people to appreciate them in the wild. We adhere to the appropriate declared approach distances for marine mammals in NSW and The Australian National Guidelines for Whale and Dolphin Watching 2017. This means we do not paddle on top of the dolphins or chase them down. The area we have been running tours in since 1995, is their critical habitat and we encourage correct behaviour. One of the reasons people cannot hire a kayak in Byron Bay is to stop people that are unaware of the laws for approaching the mammals and interfering with their behaviour. Given that you got, what I would consider, a great dolphin encounter and that I rescheduled your booking within the 24 hour time period, against company policy, at no charge, I find your review to be false but also actually quite strange. Thank you so much for taking the time to review your kayak experience with us! We're sorry we didn't get any photos of the dolphins that day, but we always err on the side of caution. Most phones may be water resistant, but if your kayak was to tip over there is a good chance your phone would have been lost or destroyed. We are so glad you enjoyed yourself overall and we look forward to welcoming you again one day, where we promise we will get lots of pics of the wildlife!
