Perfect Tour - Despite Rain, Wind, and Cold
Laurence was able to fit all our “must-sees” into our tour. He didn’t let a cold, rainy, and windy day stop us from fully experiencing Stonehenge, Salisbury Cathedral, and Lacock. Laurence shared so many historical facts about these places and the surrounding areas. He was punctual and conveniently picked and dropped us off at our hotel in Bath. He’s also an excellent driver. My whole family highly recommends using Laurence!

        very reliable
We had a private tour with Oldbury Tours, organized according to our own plan. Laurence was extremely helpful and patient, as we had some difficulties to stick to our initial plan due to covid complications and train strikes. We found a way out to make the tour possible. Very informative, tourist oriented, flexible and reliable. One of the best tours we have ever had!

Fascinating in-depth walking tour of places others don't get to see
This tour was everything I'd hoped it would be. Laurence took me off the beaten track to Neolithic sites around Avebury and the Ridgeway that many people don't make the effort to see - highlights were the Devil's Den and the Valley of the Rocks. Laurence is extremely knowledgable about the deep history of the landscape, and - the most important thing - great company for a day's walk. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to explore this landscape more deeply.

Private custom tour of Wiltshire and my ancestral sites
Mr. Davies provided my partner and I an exceptional “ancestry” tour of Wiltshire. He arranged for us to be picked up and returned to our club in London for the day by private car. This was very helpful as my partner is partially disabled. (Although the London traffic was horrendous and we might do differently next time). We then proceeded to meetup with him and he provided a wonderful, well informed tour of a list of villages and sites from whence my ancestors hailed specific to Wiltshire, which I had provided to him, such as churches and villages from genealogical research I had done. It was, he said, the first tour of that nature he had done. He had scouted the sites in advance! Not only that, but as an archaeologist and historian, he had great knowledge of the area. We got to see the ancestral sites, very meaningful to me as my grandfather was an emigrant to the U.S. We also were able to fit in some Neolithic sites, two small, interesting museums, several iconic villages, and a luxury lunch at a Michelin starred restaurant on a lovely resort estate. My partner is a Numismatist and very interested in coins, medallions and hordes, and Mr Davies even had a great knowledge of these as well. As a premier musician, he was extremely cultured and well travelled and was even acquainted with my partners great uncle, a well known French Horn player. What a small world we live in and I would not hesitate to say what a high recommendation we would give him, a lovely chap. It was a great day and though not inexpensive, well worth the cost.

Perfect Tour Guide of Ancient Britain
Laurence Davies will keep you engaged and brings a depth of understanding and thoughtfulness to his tours. We explored Avebury, Silbury Hill, The Sanctuary, as well as an active archaeological dig. He capped off our time together with a fabulous lunch at The Quarry. This is the guy if you want to understand all that surrounds you in the Salisbury area. He picked us up in Bath which made the whole adventure very easy. Enjoy!

        Neolithic History Comes Alive
When you walk in a pasture, have you ever wondered who walked that same path 1,000 years ago? How they lived? Who they loved? Laurence can make all that history come alive for you! His passion for neolithic history is obvious from the twinkle in his eye and the gentleness with which he treads the paths of Wiltshire! This is the very best money we spent on our time in England, and we will spend time with him again on our next trip. We can't recommend it strongly enough for those who love history

        Fantastic day!
My wife and I took the Winter Solstice tour with Laurence. It was a magical day from wandering amongst the stones at Stonehenge at dawn and watching the sun come up to exploring the surrounding sites. Laurence was a terrific guide who is passionate about archaeology and extremely knowledgeable. There is no way we could have found some of the places visited or known about the background and current research relating to them. It couldn’t have been a better day.

        Outstanding
Lawrence was outstanding, wonderful, patient and very well prepared. We were just two friends that wanted a private tour of the area including Stonehenge. We got so much more than we asked for!! Beautiful drive through the countryside threw small villages and country we never would’ve seen without Lawrence. He took us two many ancient sites as well as The white chalk courses, a cute picture perfect village that they used to make movies in that has been perfectly preserved. It was a very rainy day and he provided ponchos which kept us nice and dry it was a nice touch and my friends loved the ponchos, she has track some down to purchased them herself. Lawrence was extremely knowledgeable and I wouldn’t go with anyone else for a personal tour of Stonehedge and surrounding areas. Thanks Lawrence Cody

Wonderful tour of Avebury and surrounding area
We had a fascinating day with Laurence Davies of Oldbury Tours in October touring Avebury and numerous other archaeological highlights of the area. We were able to visit all the sites that I had dreamed of seeing: The Sanctuary, Silbury Hill, West Kennet Long Barrow, and much more. It was fantastic to approach the Avebury site via part of the West Kennet Avenue of double stone monuments. We even had time to visit a pub for lunch, visit the Wiltshire Museum in Devizes, and see the remains of a Roman Villa with a spectacular mosaic floor. Laurence has in-depth knowledge of all the archaeological monuments in the area. I only wish that we had time to stay and explore more of Wiltshire! I'd like to return and spend a couple of weeks touring all the villages and exploring the countryside on foot.

        Stonehenge, Salisbury and Avebury
Highly recommend Laurence Davies and Oldbury Tours for an intensive understanding of the neolithic period, its monuments and investigations. Having a knowledgeable individual like Laurence show me the details that clearly would be missed without his guidance was a great experience. He is a very personable person, prompt and very friendly to talk to. His personal anecdotes only added to the experience in very personal way. I only wish we had had more time!

An enlightening day out with Laurence while reuniting old friends
Our tour a the highlight of our annual reunion as old university friends from Bangor. We visited Silbury Hill, Kennet Long barrow and Avebury, finishing at the Museum in Devizes. All impeccably planned by Laurence and well -tailored to our group's abilities.and level of interest. Laurence proved to be a n excellent leader, enthusiastic and well up to date in his knowledge of current research, revealing some fresh and fascinating detail about sites we think we know but actually need someone like him to bring alive.

        Amazing don't miss it
Laurence is an amazing tour guide with a passion and knowledge of the area I believe few possess! He is accommodating to your schedule and interests and builds the tour personal for you. We requested a primarily walking tour which we received and it was awesome. He can do a driving tour with little walking and a full day that includes stonehedge ( we had already seen it) He had pictures on his iPad of what they believe the site looked like, the overall aerials and even pictures of him on an actual archeological dig in the area. His tour brought the whole area to life!!

        Best day of our trip
If you've had people say Stonehenge is just a pile of rocks, there is no way you will think that if you've visited with Laurence Davies / Oldbury Tours. We spent the day with Laurence and could easily have spent more time. It was an outstanding day of learning from an expert that brought the history alive. Laurence did a great job of planning the day in a way that lets you learn and consider each amazing site, and think about how they are connected and what this area might have meant thousands of years ago. His enthusiasm and first hand knowledge cannot be beat. It is easy to spend the day with him and the combination of seeing, touring and learning made this the best day on our two week trip to Britain.

        Memorable Day Out
Laurence's knowledge about the Neolithic monuments all across this region is extensive and his passion is infectious. Our day started with a pick up at our Salisbury lodging and included a walk along the ancient stone avenue and among the stones in Avebury, a climb to the chamber inside West Kennet Long Barrow, an exploration of the construction of and relationship between Woodhenge and Stonehenge and enlightening conversation throughout. Laurence is a master at seamless time management, adjusting pace to suit our interests and preferences while keeping the day on track. His narrative helped us visualize how these sites were constructed, how they were used and how they may have marked the life events of the people living in those times. With his help, it felt like we were walking in the footsteps of the ancients. Truly a memorable day!

Nearly a million people visit Stone Henge, Avebury and the surrounding sites each year and only a sliver get to experience their true importance and meaning. Laurence's knowledge and ability to weave the history into stories made the stones come alive for us. It was a day we will never forget. It costs a good deal of money and time to travel to these locations, to not get the most out of the experience is a waste. Book a day with Oldbury Tours and you will be very glad you did.

Lawrence was a great guide, very knowledgeable about Stonehenge and the area, following the latest research. We saw so much and heard interesting history.

We also much appreciated the flexibility in the itinerary that included everything we wanted in only about half a day.

We spent the day with Laurence and it was an amazing and informative experience. His knowledge and expertise is outstanding and we gained so much from listening to his explanations. He was very accommodating and we would not have had such a positive outing without him. He took a very thoughtful approach to how we experienced the sites and it built a powerful narrative that we would otherwise not have been aware of. I would not hesitate to make a booking!

My sister and I have been planning this tour with Laurence for two years due to COVID. It was well worth the wait !!! We decided on two full days, and that still wasn't enough time. Laurence took us to the following:
      • Avebury / Avebury Sanctuary
      • Amesbury Archer burial place
      • Marden Henge
      • The Devils Den
      • Cuckoo Stone
      • Source of the River Avon
      • Durrington Walls
      • Silbury Hill
      • Woodhenge
      • West Kennett Long Barrow
      • Wiltshire Museum
      • Alexander Keillor Museum
      • Stonehenge
      • Mesolithic Post Holes at Stonehenge
      • Stonehenge - Greater Cursus
He was extremely knowledgeable about the archaeological sites and the Wiltshire landscape. Due to the Queen’s passing, we were unable to attend the Stonehenge inner circle access. Laurence was quick to find a bypass road and we were able to view the stones, as well as rearranging the day’s schedule. So we could attend a 96 round gun salute fired by 14 Regiment Royal Artillery at Stonehenge later that afternoon.
My sister and I are already planning our next tour with Laurence :)

We spent the full day with Laurence. He picked us up at train station and off we went to a full day including Stonehenge, Neolithic sites, Avebury and Salisbury Cathedral. If was the most fabulous day!! Laurence is a very attentive tour guide and answered my million questions about the history of the area. We came away with a much cleared picture of what the whole area must have been like in Neolithic Britain. Was the best day of our trip! Laurence rocks!

Highly recommended! Laurence helped us organize our day with great recommendations so we could enjoy more of Salisbury and Stonehenge. He provided very interesting information about the sites and made sure our teenagers were engaged. With stories about the region, its people and geography Laurence kept everyone entertained and made the visit even more interesting. He also gave us good advice for a fantastic historic restaurant. Everything was well organized, it was easy to communicate with Oldbury Tours, he was on time and safely drove us everywhere. Thanks Laurence for the amazing tour!

Absolutely brilliant. This was one of the best days out ever. Laurence grew up exploring the areas we visited and speaks engagingly about history, landscape and geology with a passion and authority that comes from deep knowledge acquired over many years. A great many 'thank yous' from our whole family!

We spent a full day with Laurence and it was the best day of our weeklong trip to London and Paris. Incredibly personable and knowledgeable, Laurence was able to answer all of our many questions and explain things such that our entire family could understand. One of our teens began the day less interested in the area than the other, but by the end, even she had some appreciation for what we were seeing. Laurence made sure that we had arrangements for some physical challenges, washrooms, and lunch during the day, and was extremely accommodating, all while being professional and friendly. I can't recommend Oldbury Tours and Laurence more highly and would recommend this experience to everyone.

This tour was the highlight of our time in England. Laurence took us to Avebury, West Kennet Long Barrow, Woodhenge, Durrington Walls and a few more. He was knowledgable and approachable. We asked lots of questions. When our final destination turned out to be closed, he took us to another place of interest, driving farther and longer than originally planned.

We would like to say how much we enjoyed the very informative and interesting tour of the Avebury site today. Laurence's knowledge and the way he shared the information gave us a fascinating insight into the prehistoric sites. His own passion for archaeology is clearly evident and this contributed to a very enjoyable time for us. Thanks again. Wendy and Nigel.
