The short- to medium-length hikes to view waterfalls do include uneven terrain and elevation gain. The steepness of the trails and elevation gain will vary based on time of year and weather, as well as the aptitude of the group, but could include as much as 800 feet (250 meters) elevation gain.
Weather conditions, maintenance, and other natural events can cause closures of roads, trails and historic structures. In these events, alternate itineraries will be offered. If advance notice is possible, guests will be notified of the change the day prior to their departure.
This is a child-friendly tour. Children between the ages of 0 and 11 inclusively are permitted on this tour at the rate listed. Please inform us if you’ll be bringing a child under the age of 7 so we can provide appropriate car seats. Some very small children may find the hiking difficult.
Comfortable clothing/shoes for walking over uneven terrain are suggested. Most months of the year include the possibility of rain and mud. Outside of July and August, footwear that can handle occasional muddy trails and puddles is suggested; rain ponchos are available.
Travelers should have a moderate physical fitness level
On this tour of the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area, you will be taking trails and pathways that are beyond what most visitors experience while here. In fact, about 30% of your time on the tour is on a trail that is used by fewer than 5% of the visitors to the Columbia River Gorge.
The tour also supports the local communities by providing snacks from a locally-based purveyor, a small woman-owned business in Portland. In addition, if you choose to purchase something from the Vista House, which stocks a large variety of local craftspeople (including Native American craftspeople), proceeds go to the not-for-profit foundation that maintains the rest stop and historical site.
This tour/activity will have a maximum of 10 travelers

Covid safe, convenient, and super informative way to see the natural beauty just outside the city
Sep 2020
My boyfriend and I were so happy to find a tour operator in Portland who is still offering fun experiences during Covid times and has clearly put substantial thought into safety.

That being said, although there were other people on this tour and it required car travel, the entire vibe was chill and didn't make us feel like we were about to risk our lives to see waterfalls IN A PANDEMIC.

We did our waterfall tour with Sarah as well as two bike tours with her partner Edwin during our visit to Portland. They were both incredibly chill and friendly, and they made it possible to experience a ton of Portland during the three and half days we were there.

The five waterfalls we saw were gorgeous, and Sarah had a lot of interesting information to share about the history of the falls as well as the scenic road we took as we drove between them.

The infrastructure talk was especially appreciated by my boyfriend, who is a civil engineer. The end of the tour features a monument to the road honoring the civil engineer who designed it, which was cool to see given how much information we had learned about the history throughout the journey.

This tour was my favorite thing we did on our trip, which is saying something because we did a lot! I have a new appreciation for waterfalls and now want to check out more of them.

The views: wow! The waterfalls: cold, gorgeous, so impressive. The hikes were easy enough for someone who isn't a regular hiker, but still fun, I felt like I really got into the forest. Edwin was so informative and really loves what he does. He did a great job connecting with the group on the tour, and it was nice to have a tour that has no minimums -- as a solo traveler, I'm always afraid to be canceled on. He'd just taken out a solo traveler the day before. Thanks Edwin and the Lonely Planet Experiences team! I wouldn't have missed this for anything.

Waterfalls and views galore
Great experience, would do it again! It was so cool to see the waterfalls with all the spring rain. The guides gave me the perfect mix of time with the group and time to myself. 10/10 would recommend.

Unmissable, relaxed pace, great stories
Stunning waterfalls, great hikes, wildflowers just beginning to emerge, and plenty of time to explore and enjoy! I was so thrilled to experience this with my knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide, Sarah. She is a true local, as in love with the place as her guests are, and full of amazing stories. Comfortable and even a little lux transportation and the feeling I was getting a behind-the-scenes look at a beautiful place enjoyed by many. Truly unmissable.
