    Carlos was so great
Carlos was a great tour guide at the mayan ruins. He made it fun and informative. He told us of the history and showed us many native plants.

    Terrible experience!
We were on a cruise and signed up for a ATV excursion at the Port. We were under the impression that we would be in the jungle or off roading of some type. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE!!! We later found out it was a "tour" but there was no talking involved because 1: we were on the ATV so we couldn't talk to one another and 2: the tour guide didn't speak English. We were on the ATV'S on the street the entire time going extremely slow (if I wanted to do that I would have just got a jeep where it was air conditioned). The best part was we were taken to a small bar on the side of a road where they had great tacos and margaritas (we then found out after the tour we were supposed to get 2 free drinks each and a lunch at no charge as part of the tour) and after eating and drinking at the little bar we were ask to pay for everything with cash (again, not knowing yet that this was supposed to be included at no charge with the tour). At the end of the tour we were ask to sit in a very busy area on the beach where several (about 15) people come up to you trying to get you to buy stuff like jewelry and bracelets and roses folded from palm leaves and even a massage. So at this point I was able to connect to wifi and find the conversion from peso to USD... we accepted the ATV tour for 2 people for $130... they charged us $144 but we didn't know the conversion yet because it was in pesos when we signed. I brought this up to the lady that charged us and she said "These are fees and we can't control them" so I argued back that there is NOTHING in writing or in small print mentioning " fees". She then said "there's nothing I can do". So I had to contact my credit card company to get it fixed. All in all it's a 0 out of 5 review!

    Great Experience!
Visited Costa Maya while on a cruise and took a tour of the Mayan ruins. Our guide, Carlos, was great! He was very friendly and knowledgeable. After seeing the ruins, he took us to an authentic Mexican food stand where they served tacos, empanadas, and beverages. We then took a trip to the beach and shopping area before heading back to port. I would highly recommend Toucan Tours!

    ATV day
We had a great time on the ATV's. Most of the riding was on streets. Our guide pointed out several historical sights and then took us to a little bar/ restaurant across from the beach, where we had 2 hours of eating and drinking. We had to taxi back to the ship, but it was not an issue. All in all it was a good day.

    Off the beaten path
We found Toucan Tours pretty quickly once we got out of the port. We gave them our reservation paperwork and waited about 5 min or so for our guide. Our guide was Gustavo, and he was great. He was very knowledge about the Mayans and he had a great sense of humor. We went to the Ruins for a tour and then went to Bacalar Seven Colors Lagoon. There weren't very many people here. It was Jan so that could be why but this place was beautiful. Our service was excellent. We had beers, fresh guacamole, shrimp ceviche, and shrimp tacos. All of this was included in our excursion. This was a great experience. It was pretty windy so we did not go in the water this day. Our driver stayed on site with us. This really put me at ease to have our driver onsite. We were about 40 min away from the ship so it helped make me feel very comfortable that our driver was right there. We stayed about an hour 1/2. The bathrooms were very clean. The dogs running around are very sweet. At this spot there isn't much for kids. I was traveling with all adults. There was a slide but it didn't look really safe. BUT there was a woman and her 2 kids that went down the slide so I guess it was good to go. If you like off the beaten path kind of spot this place is great.

    Great time
This was a great excursion for us. Our guide was so knowledgeable, and the driver was very nice. We went to the ruins and our guide had pictures of the history he was telling us about. He walked us thru the ruins explaining all the history of them. He helped us climb the stairs of them and took our picture. Our guide had to leave us due to a delay in our leaving for the excursion due to the rain, but the driver took us on to the beach. It was a learning experience since he didn't speak English, but we managed to communicate thru our translator on our phones. Lunch was nice not able to sit at the beach but nice view from our table.

    Tucan Tours Costa Maya
When you leave the cruise ship and walk right outside of the port, you will encounter many tours companies. This representative of “Tucán Costa Maya SA” approached us (6 people), and offered transportation to the Maya ruins, the entrance, 2 beers/water each, a short drive to the eating/shopping area, for $300 total. They transferred us to their office establishment and that was chaotic! To say the least! Apparently, they didn’t have enough drivers. They ended up transporting our group in an old mini van. The driver Ernesto, was very attentive with us. When we arrived at the location, they didn’t have a tour guide available. We were told to wait for the next available. A guy, with the company logo on his shirt approached us and apologized. He invited us to go on and climb the steps to get to the ruins, while they located another tour guide. So, we did just that! Went up and took some pic. About 30 to 45 mins later, a tour guide, came looking for us and left his tourist group waiting, while gave us a brief explanation about the Maya Piramid at the site. And that was it! He told us to go back to our driver. We were in shock. The driver dropped us off by an undesirable place to eat, but the food, although expensive, was good. We walked around the tiny shops and purchased some souvenirs. We went back to the office, where we encountered an unprofessional Manager/Owner. Her name is Tere and when I requested a partial refund, she became very defensive and even wanted to fire, the only good and professional person in this mess, the driver. I can only say, that “Tucán Tours” is a very unorganized and unprofessional company. Don’t waste your money. BTW never gave us the drinks and at the end Tere ordered to give beers to the guys in our group. She returned $30 back from the $300. Never again! TUCÁN TOURS in COSTA MAYA 👎👎👎

    Costa maya excursion
The company itself was ok. Long wait for excursion, very short ATV ride down a road and turn around and ride back. No English . When dropped off at bar they tried to make us pay for everything when it was included. Once we got that straight they had the drinking coming.. however food was limited to a choice of 3 things instead of the full menu and took almost 2 hours to get. Advise to just stay in port as the pool is 1000% better than the beach .

We, a group of six booked the toor several months before the cruise. When booking, it said that you must book a minimum of four, so as a group of six, we thought we’d be comfortable, especially since two members of our group had some physical limitations (we explained this upon arrival). Once we arrived and paid the balance (total of $600), they tried to put six of us in an old minivan. When we saw this, two members with limitations told them they could not go, as they could not physically get in and out of the old minivan. They said no problem, as they have large vans. While waiting, a woman (Carla) was running around yelling in Spanish. She didn’t realize that members of our group spoke Spanish and heard her telling the staff that “They are a problem”. A short time later a larger van showed up, but they allowed six others to board first, taking up the front of the van. So this left
Is again with a van that would not allow our handicapped group members to get in and out of the van. At this time we voiced our concern again with “Eva” who was a manager and just asked for our money back. She apologized and returned our money. We also told her about what Carla was telling and she told us that she was the General Manager, which was shocking to us. We then went back to the port and booked a taxi (ver large van) for the exact tour that we were taking with Toucan Tours, and at half the cost that Toucan was going to charge us. The driver we had was absolutely amazing and we had a great tour.

Let me start by saying I often submit reviews (this platform and others) and aim to be objective in them (pros and cons). It's rare that I have a "terrible" experience. This excursion didn't qualify as terrible but it definitely meets the definition of "poor". And not because of the Ruins. No, no...it rates poorly because of the tour company.

In summary, after being delayed 20 minutes departure on the van, we were taken to the wrong excursion. After being brought back to the field office, we had to wait to talk to a rep (Eva) because she was in a yelling match with the family of 10 whose excursion reservation was also screwed up. Once she got to us and I explained that we were taken to the wrong place she responded with "Well, it was just a mistake". Ok, fine...I get mistakes, they happen. But how long to get me where I was supposed to be an hour ago?? She goes off-script by responding to the spokesperson for the other family and the yelling match begins anew.

Finally, Eva tells me she's found a driver to take me to the ruins and that I should understand that "it's just a mistake". Several times she suggested I just take a refund and forego the entire excursion. "I can just give you your money back and you don't have to go anywhere today." When I declined, indicating the entire point of my day was to see the Ruins she responds with "No, you're not going anywhere I'll just refund you and you can go back to the dock."

She softened a bit, after once again, yelling at the other group. A driver showed up and we got situated in what turned out to be a rickety old Dodge that someone filled up with cigarette smoke prior to our departure. Upon arrival at the Ruins we were told we had less than an hour to explore. Our driver set off on a jog to find a guide to "show us around a bit". The Ruins guide was great...very friendly and gave us a bit of history before we had to rush out. Unfortunately, his original group suffered when he had to go back with us to sites they'd already been to. Sadly, we were rushed through the Ruins and didn't get to truly see/enjoy them. After an hour's drive back we were shuttled back to the dock unceremoniously.

All in all, the Ruins themselves are worth seeing from the little bit I got to see.

Toucan Tours on the other hand?? Save your time, money, and frustration. Too many other companies that you can do business with that will likely appreciate your business. Unless of course you're in the mood for ringside seats to a verbal boxing match with Eva in one corner.

Hi there, while we appreciate and respect each and every opinion there´s always two sides of the story. Indeed you were mistakenly took to the beach. Unfortunately upon your return to the main office we were having an issue with some very boisterous guests who in retailiation turned to you to make aweful comments to cause uproar. On our behalf you were approached and apologized for our mistake. We even pleaded to you not to heed their words and that we will still offer our services to you but you got carried away by whatever you were told and yourself got enraged and started to throw words; it was at that time that you were told you can get a refund if its your request. On the other hand your husband all calm and serene asked if it´d be long before you depart for your excursion to which you were responded within 5 minutes and so was it. It has always been our aim to render our guests with our utmost best but unfortunately we cannot please everybody. Thank you.

What a great experience. I was nervous, because this was our first time doing an excursion from cruising not with our cruise line. But Toucan Tours did a fabulous job! From our port, we just followed signs to the port exit which weaved through the shops. Just outside the port, there was a representative there to greet us and drive us to where everyone else was! So we didn't have to walk to it like we were told we would have to when we received our confirmation email after booking. The van was air conditioned. Our guide and driver were phenomenal, but I cannot remember their names. Our guide spoke perfect English and during the 45 minute drive to the ruins, the discussed the culture, wildlife, foliage, and all sorts of relative fun facts. We even made a pit stop beside a graveyard to see the elaborate graves. The walking tour was way better than we expected. They provided bottles of cold water and there were restrooms at Chocchoben. We saw many temples are were able to climb up a little ways on each of them. We were taught about the strangler trees, the Chicklee trees that gum is/was made from, and saw many spider monkeys hanging out in the shade of the trees. Our group was small, only 8 people including us, so we got to ask a lot of questions and it was very personable. If you are nervous about booking a tour outside of your cruise line, Toucan Tours is the way to go. We ended up taking longer than expected touring, but were still able to make it back to the port about a hour or two before we needed to be there. Costa Maya was also our favorite port to explore, with the aviation walk through with tropical birds for just a few dollars, large pool, great restaurants and shops. I was also 5 months pregnant and felt very well taken care of. Bring comfy shoes! You'll want to walk around a lot.

This tour operator is very unorganized. The trip was supposed to be for a maximum of 25 people and we were 22 people.

You get on one small bus to a hub and then they transfer you to another bus after waiting at their hub. No organization. The a/c wasn’t great in the smaller van or the big bus. So essentially this tour had about 50+ people on it. Our group was split onto a mega bus with about 48 people and another van of 12.

We got to the ruins, Victor gave about 10 minutes to look around. Then, he couldn’t be found for another 10 minutes.

He then hands us off to a 3rd party tour guide who was great but not loud enough for a group of 50+ not her fault nor did it seem like she was ready for 50+ people.

The way back, the mega bus stopped on the side of the road to let the optional beach tour people out to get on another bus which we were told we would all head to the depot then they would go in another bus.

When the remaining passengers got to the depot, we just stood there for like 15 minutes until we said hey we need a ride to the port. Then someone called someone to get another van for us.

The Chacchoben Mayan Ruins from Costa Maya trip was a lot of fun! If you’re booking from a cruise Make sure to give yourself enough time to leave the port as it’s l bit of a longer walk than some of the other ports to the exit. The company was waiting right outside of the port with a buggy to take you to their nearby office. The tour started an hour after the boat arrived and we got to the ruins a bit before all of the other tours and that was nice. We were able to get some good pictures and selfies before there was a crowd from people who booked through the cruise line. The tour guide was entertaining and informative especially once we got to the ruins but his English was a little difficult to understand especially from the back of the buss. If you struggle with hearing, try to sit in the front of the bus. The drive was mostly highway and the guide talks about the local culture and ruins on the way there. After the ruins we briefly stopped at a highway street vendor for the ability to purchase some enchiladas or something like that and then there was another stop on the way back for some fresh local fruit that was delicious. I’m glad we saved money and had a better experience than we would’ve if we booked through the cruise line.

We were in a group of 4 people, including, us, which made for an intimate, personalized experience. Our driver/guide, Eliseo, was knowledgeable, helpful, and flexible with plans - even stopping by a roadside stand when my husband wanted to try the sapote fruit.

The company was easy to find beside the pyramid and drop-off was closer in at the port entry. I highly recommend, and we paid half of what it would have cost through the ship with a large-group tour.

We used toucan tours instead of the cruise offering. We not only saved a lot of money, but we had a great time. The van was comfortable and clean, and our guide was fantastic! He took us to the village after the tour, and we got some great deals on souvenirs and some authentic Mexican food. Very much recommend this tour with this company!

The email came with great directions. The wait time was minimal for checking in. We were in a van with another 4 adult 1 child family (we are 3 adult 4 kids 18-11). The van was air conditioned and plenty of room. The other family even brought a stroller. They had ice cold bottles of water for us too at the beginning of the trip at at the site. Carlos was a fantastic guide! We even stopped at a local side stand for the freshest pineapple we have ever had! Carlos was so knowledgeable about the culture and site it was beyond what we were expecting. We got waters half way through the tour - the driver Miguel brought them to us and was very polite and helpful though out the trip. What a great memory and if we go back we will use them again!! We were back on the ship in plenty of time. Don’t hesitate to do this your or use the group for an excursion!

The wait at the business was longer than expected and the tour guide said he had to cut our tour a little short because it was a busy day. I appreciated his honesty and Carlos' part of the tour was absolutely great. He was very informative. Before we left for the tour we were told (not by the guide) there was a 1 hour stop at the beach, which we did not want. I was told it was included and we had to stop. I don't remember that being part of the tour when I bought the excursion and was disappointed and worried about getting back in time to do some quick shopping before we had to be back on the ship for an early departure. When we got to the beach stop, the driver verified with the other family on the van that they didn't want to go to the beach so he was going to drop us off and get us later but since we didn't want to go either he took us all back to the pier. Still wasn't much time to shop but was glad it worked it!

The communication right from the beginning was great. Good directions on where the meeting point was but keep in mind when leaving the ship that it takes time to walk through the port village to get out to the main road and then a walk down the road to get to the pickup spot. It wasn’t as close as we thought. There was cold water there when we arrived so that was nice to have. We had a nice air conditioned van and a pleasant driver, Erik (sorry if I’ve misspelled). It is about a 45 minute drive each way to and from the Mayan ruins. Our guide was Carlos and he was very informative and encouraged us to ask questions. You could tell he really enjoys what he does. The tour was about an hour before we returned to the van to go back. You may consider insect repellent but we were ok without it but some did have it. It’s a good idea to have a tip for the driver and the tour guide. We really enjoyed the tour and would recommend it!
