About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- KiwiCriticDunedin0 contributionsWorld Class Tasting ExperienceFour of us did a tasting a Elderton last week. We are all wine buffs, who have tasted extensively at cellar doors around the world, and I have to say that our experience at Elderton was World Class. We had booked for the Exceptional Sites tasting, which we took in front of the fire at the historic Ashmead residence (now the cellar door) on a winter’s afternoon. The house itself is set in the middle to home block vineyard site, surround by vines, some quite ancient, so the setting is special. Jodhi hosted us, guiding us through the range and throwing in a couple of unexpected treats along the way. We are familiar with much of the Elderton range, and so it was no surprise that the wines were excellent. Equally, Jodhi was a warm and professional guide, whose knowledge, enthusiasm and passion for wine shone through. As we departed we spied her Australian 2023 Best Wine Communicator - Cellar Door award; based on our experience, that accolade was richly deserved. Thanks Jodhi and Elderton for rounding our time in the Barossa with such a great tasting, and (as Kiwis) for the Pinot Noir banter!Written August 10, 2024
- Hugary10 contributionsElderton WinesWe had done a tour of wineries before and found that they changed to venues about and that 8 or more was to many places to visit. This time we hired car and decided to see three to four per day over a two day period in the Barrosa and Adelaide Hills. Elderton was a wine we first encountered in 1989 and loved it and still do. So it was a must to see on our list. Others where Wolf Blas, closed for several days so no luck, Two Hands and Meltons. Certainly Eldertons has the best cellar door I have ever seen. It's a beautiful old house and you get to try wine at the counter or seating in luxury. The bathrooms are also fantastic and not the old tin sheds of the past I was seen in other wineries. The lady on was very friendly as we were the only ones so far this day. All quiet in the area as tourists more interested in Bike races. They have a tasting charge, all do, but waived if you buy. We like reds so my wife, I'm driving , does the tasting and selects a number that she thinks are just fantastic. Having just returned from France were wines are not full bodied and range from 45 to 500 Euro this was a great first start. A nice case in the post for when we get home.Written January 20, 2024
- jenpickard0 contributionsLazy woman would not serve only customers outside. Could not leave the phone unattended! We spent three days 2 nights in the Barossa wine tasting. So rang the day before to see if it was pet friendly. Yes, outside veranda- if it rains, etc etc. well we drove up got our dog out of the car and made ourselves at home. Daughter went inside to organise tasting (we had been inside last time). Oh no the woman told us she was ‘down a staff member’ and could not do outside tasting. She ‘couldn’t leave the phone unattended’. As if they don’t have a mobile. We would have been the only two customers!Written July 20, 2023

- TravellingSandy40 contributionsA Must Do in Barossa ValleyUndoubtedly, one of the best experiences in the Barossa Valley. Fantastic Cellar Door for tasting in a relaxed atmosphere with knowledgeable and friendly staff. Some may think that their premium wines could be on the expensive side (due to their superior quality), but don't let that put you off - they have something for all tastes and budgets. It is a MUST-DO for serious wine tasters, so don't let the opportunity pass. Be the envy of your friends when they find out you have visited Elderton Wines.Written March 26, 2023
- CoachK710 contributionsA wine and experience for everyoneWe visit the Barossa Valley and Elderton every year and it is always such a great experience. Every member of the Elderton team take such pleasure and pride in representing this family winemaking success story. The drive through the vineyard to the spectacular cellar door builds the anticipation of some excellent wines which deliver at every level of varietal and price. For me, I am always amazed at how well these wines drink upon release yet cellar brilliantly. Don't miss Elderton if you are in the Valley.Written March 26, 2023

- Roy J0 contributionsFabulous afternoon well spent. We attended their in-house premium tasting experience where we had a company official show us the range of their reds. He was most engaging and managed to convey his wide experience of reds including manufacture, tasting notes, and helping us to understand the Elderton range of Shiraz and other blends for which they excel. The cellar door is set up beautifully for presentations and we were lucky to have a one-on-one session. We loved the time spent at the cellar door such that we have placed another two orders since, for shipment to WA. Both orders have arrived safely and contirbuted to our enjoyment of Barrossa Valley vintages. Well done Elderton!Written March 23, 2023
- petermE3380IV0 contributionsElderton - Great Wines, Friendly and Helpful StaffCellar door at Elderton (my favorite winery) is a wonderful experience. Great wines and very friendly staff. Having been buying and enjoying Elderton wines since our first visit 5 years ago. Planning another SA visit later this year which will definitely include Elderton.Written March 23, 2023
- stillbreathing0 contributionsShould have done it soonerLong time since I had roamed through the Barossa. A lot has changed. The explosion of wineries has put a more competitive edge to the wine tasting experience. Case in point is Elderton Wines. A long standing favourite of those who relish the full bodied flavour of cabernet and shiraz. Elderton has always been a relaxing and rewarding experience but the new (probably more than 5 years old) cellar door takes it to a new level. Magnificent comfortable surroundings coupled with friendly knowledgable staff provide a wonderful event. Furthermore the acquisition of cooler climate vineyards has resulted in a variety of very good white wines. in every wine region there is a small number of "must do" wineries and Elderton is definitely one of them.Written March 23, 2023
- kennV1695HZ0 contributionsExcellent command.Beautiful winery, excellent services and superb wine, especially the command range. Would never miss when visiting SA. cheersWritten March 23, 2023

The service was excellent and the host most informative.
The Cellar Door is set in this beautiful old house, that absolutely oozes old world charm.
Every wine that we tasted was a winner both white and red. The samples were not stingy either. Highly recommend this winery.

Not too commercial; small and intimate yet very stylish. This is a great cellar door - which can be found just outside Nuriootpa. Set back from the main road the house is set in beautiful gardens next to fields of vines. Inside the house its very stylish; great facilities with a long cellar door bar area with seating. We stayed for lunch and were delighted with the both the pate and the cheese platter which were great. I have always liked Elderton wines - now I'll recommend the Cellar door too.

It is very rare to write a review where the words ‘a privilege’ are used, but this is certainly one of them.
My partner and I attended the Retrospective Tasting at Elderton with one of the owners Allister Ashmead on 25th Feb 2023.
Aside from the wonderful wines and delicious foods sampled on the day, Allister and his Team made the entire trip for us from Queensland an absolute joy. It was warming to hear not only the successes of the family as wine makers, but the trials that come with their entire heritage. Elderton has the perfect mix of nostalgia and family – this was delivered to us at a wonderful tasting experience that both my partner and I agree was a real privilege.
Overall the Barossa is a wonderful, honest and comfortable experience – Elderton exemplify this and we look forward to many more trips to their cellar door.

Lovely family owned winery. Our host Jodhi was both knowledgeable and friendly and made the whole experience very enjoyable. The wines were excellent as was the tasting room in a lovely converted old house.

Recently did the Elite tasting experience with Cameron, having tasted the first Helbig '15 some years ago and the Command often. Cam's deep knowledge and passion were generously shared with my boys & me and we had a great time. So much so that we left a sizeable amount on wine buys, including 2 Helbigs to carry us through the rest of the week. You should do the "Elite" too - it's so worthwhile.
