About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Steve082919570 contributionsFun Ghost TourFun tour of downtown Manteo. Good stories of the history of the town, the islands in general, as well as ghost stories. Tour lasts about 90 minutes, easy walking with plenty of stops. Would recommend this to anyone visiting the OBXWritten October 17, 2019
- LibbyPittsburgh0 contributionsOrganized and InterestingHaving taken all three of the ghost tours from the other company, Ghost Tours of the Outer Banks, this year we went with OBX Ghost Tours, which is different company. We arranged our tour for a Monday, but there was some threat of violent storms so they canceled and offered us the option to go the next night. They let us know by 3 p.m. the day of the tour, which was good notice since the tour starts at 8 p.m., arrive at 7:30 to check in. They staggered the start of about 4 groups of about 15 people, which is a nice size. Our guide was Laura and she was pleasant, authentic, and entertaining. We enjoyed being with her. They have a sort of electromagnetic frequency meter and she asked for a volunteer to carry it, with the responsibility of notifying the rest of us if it went off. Some of the stories overlapped with those of the other tour company, but that is to be expected. I believe we took the general ghost tour, and they may be developing a pirate walk, so if so, I will review that next July, 2020. Some of the tour guides were decked out in costume and others were not. It would have been cool if all were in costume and character. Price is $20 a person. I think $15 would be more appropriate. It is a good tour of 90 minutes and the walking is quite slow and easy with many stops. There are some really fascinating ghost stories in this area, so go on as many tours as you can and read any books you can find locally! Public bathrooms nearby are available, even in the evening hours.Written July 18, 2019
- Cooper O0 contributionsGreat Ghost TourMy Girlfriend and I had lots of fun on this tour, which features some great local legends and historical tales. Our tour guide Julia was enthusiastic and did an excellent job of keeping things interesting. Our tour lasted approximately an hour and a half. Would highly recommend!Written June 30, 2019
- bobble9260 contributionsGreat tour with an interactive guideOur family went on the late tour after dark and it was great. Our guide "BJ" was very interactive with our group and kept our attention with her stories. The teens even liked it and said it was something different to do and thought the stories were "cool" It is a walking tour wear comfortable shoes. I would recommend this tour.Written June 24, 2019
- Lesley D0 contributionsShort and disappointingOur tour left at 7:50pm and we were in the car to go home by 9:03pm. Should be advertised as a local legend tour. It was interesting but disappointing. The reviews I read led me to believe the pit stop at the Pioneer Theater was the halfway point but it was basically the end of our tour. We ended at the veterans memorial, not a cemetery. The ghost detector was supposed to be passed around but it actually only got passed among 3 siblings and my children didn't get a chance to use it. Thankfully I got the tickets for half price. Definitely wouldn't do it again. We could've done our own for free. Manteo is definitely a cool place to explore although basically everything closed at 5pm. The highlight was getting popcorn and drinks at the Pioneer Theater. It was awesome. I would love to go back there a see a movie.Written June 4, 2019
- Janel C0 contributionsFun informative tourWe were fortunate enough to have Julia as our guide for the Labor Day/final official regular tour of the season. We thoroughly enjoyed the wide variety of history for not only the ghosts and legends, but also for additional surrounding OBX history, info, legends and lore. So happy the Labor Day date was added- we kept missing the ghost tour due to when we typically visit, but it was well worth the money & a very enjoyable evening. A must do.Written September 4, 2018
- terry31240 contributionsa great ghost tour!i loved this tour. I learned so much history and was highly entertained by our guide. While i didnt see any ghosts, i had a great time--and my granddaughter rated this an 11 out of 10! While we were on the tour, the moon came up--and it was the 'blood moon'-- just as the guide was talking about pirates. Very fitting!Written August 30, 2018
- 1goofyboxer0 contributionsFun time with OBX Ghost ToursThe family and I had a fun evening with OBX Ghost Tours. Good mix of spooky stories and local history.Written July 25, 2018
- Lana P0 contributionsFun times! We really enjoyed our tour! Our guide provided us with great info on the area, interesting historical facts, and a few ghostly tales. And I’m pretty sure I caught a ghostly image in a window during the tour! I expected more scary tales, but we definitely enjoyed our tour!Written July 10, 2018
- Jenn W0 contributionsFun, entertaining, engaging, and educational!Emily was a great guide and storyteller! We had a great time learning about the Lost Colony, why it was lost - and what souls still wander the island and the Outer Banks! Thanks Emily!Written July 8, 2018
- Meade10 contributionsGreat Fun!We had a fantastic time. My husband, daughter and I have been coming to OBX for the last 12 years and over the years have learned a lot of local history. OUR guide, BJ, provided us with a lot of history we did not know and was so entertaining. She told the stories with such enthusiasm and was a delight. I definitely think we will make this tour again. It was just fun!!!Written June 21, 2018
- Melissa T0 contributionsVery EntertainingThis is a great walking tour of downtown Manteo. The stories are told with humor and flare. Hopefully you will enjoy stories of The Lost Colony, Blackbeard, Theodosia Burr and many more. The locals and a couple people that were docked there interacted with us which made our tour more enjoyable. Our guide,Matt, poked fun at us too. It is worth the money for a guided dusk into night tour. Tell Matt I sent you ;-).Written June 7, 2018
- Jenalba0 contributionsA good time!My husband and I took four teenage boys with us on this ghost tour. Julie was our guide. She even had a ghost detector that one of the tourists carried with him. It would light up if there was ghostly activity in the area!! Julie had a ton of ghost stories to tell us as we walked through the village of Manteo, on the waterfront. I've been coming to the OBX for 9 years and there were a couple of stories native to the area that I actually wasn't very familiar with. This was a great night time activity and the boys really enjoyed it!Written September 2, 2017
- skliebs0 contributionsGood Time!Julia was our tour guide for our night. She was very knowledgeable and shared very interesting stories. If you're interested in using ghost hunting equipment, there was an EMF detector that was passed around through the night. The tour lasted for about two hours.Written August 18, 2017
- crbenjamin0 contributionsDelightful Backdrop to Regional TalesManteo is a charming little hamlet with a New Orleans feel to it. Lots of small mom and pop stores and eateries, lots of history (including the famed Roanoke Island), but very few haunted spots or ghosts on record. Wait...this is supposed to be a ghost tour review!? Yes, this is an honest review to say that the stories told will delight your OBX cravings but not necessarily for the specific ground you'll stroll on this 1.5-2.25 hour tour. Expect a late start, as it takes some work to gather all fellow ghost tour guests. The tales are told with effort and stagecraft, which is appreciated and a touch cheesy, but you are a tourist and the kids will enjoy it. You'll see many beautiful backdrops to snap pictures of and it's a nice break from the OBX nightly routine, just don't expect to see or feel the chilling touch of an apparition. This is more of a storytelling than a true hunt, although an EMF detector is provided.Written August 8, 2017

Having been on true Ghost Tours in Charleston, Savannah and Asheville, we were looking forward to this tour because of the local area's long and rich history and pirate lore. Unfortunately, the tour is more a "story-telling tour" focusing on tales from other areas rather than any reported local "paranormal" activity. With the exception of one stop at a home rumored to have the footsteps of a young girl continuously reappear and in the parking lot of a supposedly haunted theater, the majority of the tour was spent in overly long stops along the waterfront where the guide told stories about Blackbeard and events which had occurred elsewhere in the Outer Banks.
The tour area covers only a couple of blocks near the waterfront, and most of the tour time is spent standing at the dock/walkway overlooking the water. The guide was a nice lady, but she was not particularly engaging and some stories went on a bit too long - we began to lose interest.
The company advertises, "Our tour is unique from others in the area because we are equipped with EMF detectors and try to limit our group size to 20". No EMFs were used during our tour.
This is not a tour for folks who have an interest in hearing about or potentially experiencing local paranormal activity. It could be entertaining for folks who want to hear some general pirate stories about the Outer Banks.

Two friends and I went on the OBX Ghost Tour in downtown Manteo last night. What fun! Beth was our guide and for over and hour entertained us with scary and sometimes funny stories about the spirits that haunt us all in the OBX. Blackbeard, Theodosia Burr and the Lost Colony and many other legends were covered with detailed history, theories, proof as well as exactly where to go in the area to be scared witless. Thank you Beth! Along with stories Beth brought an ETF to let our group know when spirits were amongst us on the tour, and led us to some spots where the monitor is always in overdrive. All of us thoroughly enjoyed the tour. If you're looking for a unique evening I think you'll enjoy the experience too!

We had Julia as a tour guide and she was very knowledgeable. She also handled a clearly intoxicated woman who was pretty interruptive well. We learned a lot about the area, which was really interesting. The “spooky” aspect was good but as with any ghost tour, those parts seemed a bit dramatic but the kids seemed to enjoy that. The tour was supposed to be an hour and 15min but ended up going about 30min over. All in all I think she did a great job and it was a nice night to walk around and pick up some interesting facts and folklore about the area.

Nothing at all spooky about this tour. Basically just a walking tour with some history of the Outer Banks. Very dissapointed. Save your money. There are much more interesting activities on the Outer Banks. At $25 a head and as many people are on this tour they are making BANK. The tour guide asks for tips at the end. I would really hope for what they are charging for with basically no overhead that they are paying the guide well. My ghost tour actually ended up costing me $85. The glow in the dark bracelet they give you caused a nasty fungal irritation on my wrist. So after a $40 copay, $20 medicated cream and $25 tour my total investment was $85 just for me. Definitely will not be taking this tour again!!

Tama (spelling?) was our tour guide for the ghost tour and did a fantastic job. She was very animated and knowledgable about the history of Manteo. I don't know if I really felt like it was much of a ghost tour besides the mixed in ghost stories she added throughout the tour, but otherwise, I think she really enjoyed giving the tour. I volunteered to hold the EMF meter and was disappointed it never went off (except when we went past the solar lights, which Tama explained would happen). It was a little over priced in my opinion for what it was, but overall, I enjoyed getting to do the tour, learning some history, and spending time with family!

We love Ghost Tours in every town we visit. I never expect to see ghosts, but I do expect to learn history and lore of the area. Julia did a great job connecting to her audience as she gave us the lore and legends of Manteo. It was fun, informative tour.

I recently took the Ghost Tour in Manteo, and while our guide, Julia, was enthusiastic and skillful in storytelling, the tour itself left me with mixed feelings. It's marketed as an exploration of local history and pirate lore, but it often felt more like a general storytelling tour, with tales from distant regions overshadowing local "paranormal" activity.
While there were a few moments of local paranormal interest, a significant part of the tour focused on stories about Blackbeard and events outside the immediate area. The limited coverage and time spent along the waterfront didn't fully utilize the local history and legends. Although our guide was engaging, it would have been more appealing if the tour focused on local tales.
If you're looking for an in-depth experience of local paranormal activity, this tour might not be the best choice. It's better suited for those interested in general stories about the Outer Banks. To stand out, the tour could benefit from a more balanced emphasis on local legends and history.

As someone who doesn’t believe in ghosts, I weirdly love ghost tours to get the macabre history of a place. I think our guides’ name was Julie? She was very sweet and funny and knew an insane amount of history and Blackbeard facts that were spot on. Some people on our tour think they captured something in a photo. I didn’t look at that to be honest. There was no EMF reading, I was relieved about that because it’s such cringey pseudoscience. Only complaint was the tour says it goes from 7 to 815. But the guide said it went from 730 to 845. So we were all kinda standing around for 30 minutes prior to departure. But all around, it’s a good amount of walking in a cool place with good stories and entertainment. Wholly recommend this enjoyable experience.

It seemed like a fun activity for Halloween season! Our tour guide Julia was very lively and plied us with several stories, legends and information about how areas in the OBX got their name. She made sure to recommend relevant sights and stops for us to make around the area at a later time as well. The EMF meter was a nice touch but no, it didn't go off at any point. It wasn't the best ghost tour we've done as it wasn't scary/spooky at all- perhaps only to very small kids. I would recommend the tour as a good historical one.

I've been on ghost tours in which you get chills and are convinced the ghosts are there with you. This is not that. This was more of a chill laid back story-telling tour of some of the oddities of Manteo. The tour doesn't cover much ground and there was a lot of standing around the same spot listening to tales. Around half of them were ghost related.
If you are looking for a spooky paranormal tour, this isn't it. If you are looking to hear tall tales about the area, then you might like it.

Thank you for your review. We definitely talk more about haunted history rather than being a paranormal investigation experience.
We do hope to expand to ghost hunts in the future.
