Wonderful gentle trip down the Dordogne
We booked our canoe/kayak trip online through Canoes Butterfly, which is basically the Beynac base of Canoes Loisir. As we had chosen to do the Cénac - Beynac 12km 2h30 trip this seemed like the best option for us as we drove to Beynac (actually in Castelnaud-la-Chapelle) base and parked there, which meant that at the end of the trip we could just drive away whenever we arrived. If we had booked a trip at their main base at Vitrac instead we would have needed to wait for an hourly bus back to the start. We booked the first trip at 10am, which meant getting there at 9:30 and getting equipped with a life jacket and waterproof barrel. A minibus took us a 15 minute or so drive to Cénac where we got our kayak/canoe and some basic instructions before launching into the river. This stretch of the river is wide, with a gentle current and no really fast parts. You pass through pretty countryside, wooded valleys, and pass by La Roque Gageac, Castelnaud and Beynac castles and can stop anywhere you like on the way. Our only limitation was to be back at the base before 5pm so if we'd wanted to stop for a picnic we could have done. They offer plenty of other trips - some longer and even a shorter option - but this suited us well. All-in-all a lovely day out. Tip: Don't forget sun cream on your legs (and feet if you're wearing sandals).

      Canoe Loisirs - highly recommended
Canoe Loisirs were very helpful when my wife and I visited the Dordogne for a few days of canoeing during early June 2023 . We brought our own canoe so there was no need for us to hire. Canoe Loisirs were still able to accommodate us with regards transport to/from either the starting or finishing point of our days canoe trip (for a small fee). The staff were excellent and the company is highly recommended.

      Great experience
We just finished a fantastic 3 days canoeing and exploring on the Dordogne and Vezere rivers. We booked a complete package including hotel with Canoes Loisirs. There was heavy rain for two days prior to our trip that required several route changes and hotel changes. Baptiste, our contact at Canoes Loisirs was very thoughtful and provided us great alternatives. We felt very well taken care of. An excellent trip!

      very unprofession business dealings
First, Gilles and Baptiste seemed to be working with us to design a custom trip. But this was done through about 20 emails. We really appreciated it. The trip looked beautiful. They quoted a price, but then said we would have to WIRE them money, because they did not take credit cards. This felt suspicious for a business to not accept credit cards. THEN, Gilles wrote and said they could take the card after all and we could pay the fees in 3 payments. But, we wanted to be clear of the plan, so I consolidated all 20 emails into one iteniary using the details they had given me. I sent them (Gilles) the iteniary as I understood it, including what we would be responsibile for and what the company would be responsible for (asking if it was correct). I also sent them our Amex information. They ghosted me. Finally after two weeks, I wrote them again asking if everything was ok. Gilles wrote back to cancel our trip. I asked for a reason..... .They took offense to our asking for agreement on the iteniary (specicially he said the we "didn't trust them" and therefore they were "closing our folder". I recently wrote with Baptiste and asked him to confirm if this is what happened...I wanted it to be fair and true. He ignored me. I am sure they have to agree, because I have the emails to back this up. I am so glad we didn't wire the money. But,we had been working toward a trip like this for many years. It broke our hearts.

      Best canoeing in the Dordogne
We went as a family of 11 with ages ranging from 5 years to 63 years. We did the 16k route from vitrac to beynac. We really enjoyed and had a good laugh. You could stop off along the way for lunch, snack breaks and swim. We really enjoyed and will probably book again next week! We booked on the website which was straightforward (we do speak and understand french as we are bilingual). However, the staff spoke really good English at the canoe site and were very organised (if you wish to show up and book there you can do easily). We really enjoyed and would totally recommend this to everyone. We travelled from Correze to go to this specific canoe company as we heard it was good. It didn't disappoint. Thank you Canoes Loisirs!

This is a must do activity (Vitrac - Beynac) and these guys are a good outfit
Good service. Good equipment. Reasonable price. Starting point has a decent restaurant with it. The 3 hour Vitrac - Beynac trip is recommended. Take the double paddles!

Relaxing canoe ride in beautiful surroundings
We booked on line, and everything went like clockwork - we checked in, were given our equipment and off we went - that took about 10 minutes. It was extremely well organised - the staff spoke English which helped. We went from Vitrac to Beynac on the 5 castle route, and with a stop for lunch at Le Ti Malo in Beynac, it took about 3.5 hours. The bus ride back to Vitrac was on time, and efficient. Great day out.

Great choice for canoeing the Dordogne
We booked online directly through their website and everything went smoothly and efficiently when we showed up. Clean restrooms were available at the launch site. We chose a 12 km trip (2.5 hrs- one of their shorter options) because we have a 6 year old and we didn’t know how long she’d last. We ended up taking a lot more time and going at a leisurely pace stopping for a snack along the way. My youngest announced at the end that she wasn’t bored at all even though we’d been doing this for hours! There are plenty of canoe rental places and we chose this one because we’re staying just a few minutes from Vitrac so it was convenient. However, they did everything right and there’d be no reason for me to choose a different company when we’re back in the region.

      Wonderful afternoon on the river
I had been to the Dordogne region several times before and had seen people canoeing on the river but had never done it, so I booked the Vitrac-Beynac trip for my wife and I this time around. It turned out to be an excellent way to spend the afternoon. Dealing with the staff at Canoe Loisirs was very easy and after a 5 minute orientation and equipment fitting, we were on our way. The Dordogne is an extremely easy river to navigate, and even with high water and the river running faster than usual from spring rains we had no trouble whatsoever, even though my wife is a novice paddler. Luckily we had excellent weather but take sunscreen because the reflection off the water can cause a wicked sunburn if you're not prepared. the trip itself is great - you get a great view of La Roque-Gageac, Castelnaud, Fayrac, Beynac, and other beautiful sights along the river. It's easy to take pictures and you can go at your own pace and take your time. Overall it was a super fun experience that we would definitely do again.

      An amazing day!
This is the perfect way to view the villages along the river. Even though you will be told you can do the journey from Vitrac in 3 hours allow at least 4 (we took 5!) then you can really enjoy the scenery and allow the river to take you along. Take your picnic and stop on one of the many 'beaches'. We saw so many kingfishers too. Choose a warm day and don't forget your sunscreen. A really special day!

      Must-Do Experience
Canoeing down the Dordogne river is an incredible way to see the villages tucked along the valley's cliffs. We did the route from Vitrac to Beynac, which is listed on the website as a three hour trip. However, it is possible to schedule a later pick up at the end of the route, allowing you to make your day as long as you'd like. I reccomend scheduling in at least an extra hour to have time to stop for lunch in a village or one of the riverside picnic areas. Staff were efficient and gave clear directions to the bus pickup point.

Superb canoeing down the Dordogne. They say 3 hours but allow 4 + to allow for a couple of stops and a quick lunch. Bus waiting when we finished to take us back to Vitric. A great way to spend a day.

      A lovely way to travel
We hired two canoes to travel down the river, we wished we had chosen the slightly longer one! We had great fun (two middel aged , two early 20's) . Really very easy to paddle and relax, pleanty of watering holes along the way too!

A fabulous morning on the Dordogne with beautiful views. We booked online and requested 4 open top kayaks, when we arrived we found this is a large smooth running operation. Everyone spoke English (once they realised how little French we spoke) and the set up is quick & straightforward to get your equipment. We did the 16km route from Vitrac (the main base) to Castle Baynac, it suggests this is 3 hours without stops and we did it in just over 3 hours with a couple of short stops on beaches to take photos (so allow 4hrs if wanting to stop for lunch). There are a few snack shacks on the river (didn't try them) or plenty of 'beaches' you can stop at to picnic. At the start we had to say what time bus we wanted to come back on but we arrived in time for an earlier one & no problem to go on this. The river has a natural flow so it's not hard work to paddle along. We did see a couple of people manage to tip their kayak over (not sure how as they are very stable!) so do use the straps provided to secure any bags - you can hire a waterproof bucket for 2euro to pop your bags in. TOTALLY recommend this as a fun activity.

A must-do activity to do as a family. We had a great afternoon with the family.
Departing from Vitrac, you have very large free parking. Then perfect organization, after choosing the route (we took the 12km from Vitrac to Castelnaud) for 2 2-seater canoes (it should be noted that you can board a 4-person canoe if the 2 children are of the same height and weight to avoid turning over) after having been equipped with flotation vests and paddles, head to the edge of the Dordogne for boarding.
The descent is easy because there is a little current. Lots of places where you can stop and swim. The water is quite clean.
The landscapes are magnificent. You pass under 3 bridges and can admire castles, you will also come across barges.
A refreshing moment at 41° and good memories with family.
We were able to have lunch at La Roque Gageac "pirate cabin" an aperitif board, fries with a few cold drinks all on the banks of the Dordogne at the foot of our canoes. Awesome.

Easy reservation on the internet. We chose the route from Vitrac to Castelnaud in the morning to avoid the afternoon crowds. On site, everything is well organized, both on departure and on the return trip, and the whole team is extremely friendly. A great time. I recommend.

The descent was very nice but we feel that leisure canoes are a tourist factory. You have to pay quickly, get on quickly, quickly take the bus back. Few explanations, kindness to review. It's quite dry and as expeditious as those thrown from the truck towards the river...We will take a "smaller" service provider if we come back as a family. Profit, always profit...

Effectivement c'est notre but ultime !

Wanted to canoe on the Dordogne just for the day and previous reviews backed up this company as #1. There are many companies doing this along the river but chose this one as seemed very organised, good website, plus a video on the website and good communication via email.
Kitted out with a life jacket, paddle and a large plastic tub (recommended as there's quite a bit of splashing!) we got into our canoe and were launched. A few of the staff spoke English and our rusty school French seemed to be understood! Chose the 5 Bridges tour which is about 3-4 hours if you want to stop off for snacks, picnic, river swimming etc. Be sure to count the bridges as the end point where you meet the bus to take you back to Vitrac is immediately on the left after the 5th bridge. Signs are not that obvious.
Take your camera/phone as the scenery is stunning. A waterproof case is a must, plenty of sunscreen, a hat, lots of water (we got through 4 litres between us in the heatwave) and most importantly.... insect repellent!!
Not much instruction prior to getting in the canoe but basically the person at the back steers to keep in a straight line and the person in front only stops paddling if you need to straighten up! Easy paddling as you go with the current. Easy to stop at pebbled river beaches for a break. We didn't take a picnic but there were plenty of snack shacks along the river and also one at Vitrac where a croque monsieur and frites was very welcome.
Swimming costumes/ trunks plus a tee shirt for sun protection if required plus sandals or board shoes that fasten on are a must. Put your dry stuff in the plastic barrel provided and change on landing, be prepared to be wet and maybe a little muddy.
Highly recommended, great fun and cooler on the water than the 38 degrees C on land.

Of course, canoeing is very nice to do. Admiring the scenery from the river under a beautiful summer sun is a very pleasant experience. But still you have to have a canoe meeting all the safety rules... ours was dressed on the slice so my friend cut off her hand several times while paddling....
Force to stop along the way to request a change of canoe. The people at the end of the phone send you back for a walk, disrespect you and let you wait 1 hour before coming to your aid! Complete disrespect and total disregard for the customer! Not even one excuse!
In addition to no safety instructions given before Check-out, it is clearly the factory.
There are so many proposals to go down the Dordogne with other companies. Let us advise you to flee this one!

This canoe trip was the highlight of our two weeks in France. Words cannot describe the beauty along the Dordogne River. The current is consistent but not overly strong, so you can leisurely float or paddle a bit to progress more quickly. We felt very safe and comfortable the entire trip. It is a very scenic route along the river - breathtaking photo opportunities at every turn so highly recommend a waterproof phone lanyard so you can easily snap pics along the way. There are opportunities to stop periodically at very small beaches or towns along the river and we stopped in La Roque Gageac. But instead of stopping at the designated beach (I think it's called Pirate Beach) just after the town (which would have required we walk quite a bit more to explore the town) we parked our canoes on the boat ramp in the center of town and explored the fort and grabbed a quick lunch. The entire trip was so much fun. We wished it had lasted longer!

We canoed from Carsac to Beynac (25km). It is an absolutely stunning route with amazing scenery - castles, villages, cliffs, woodland etc. It took us about six and a half hours in total including an hour for lunch and a half an hour drink.

Very good organisation. Online booking system was easy, good quality equipment, and minibus transfers ran on time.

Would recommend this route and this company!

The trip was a highlight of our vacation. The views were stupendous and the paddling was super fun. I highly recommend canoeing this stretch of river for a wonderful excursion. The sites are spectacular.

The company: we arrived for the last paddle of the day. He said that we shouldn't stop paddling or we might miss the bus. Although they'd be slower and we both have much more experience in kayaks, he told us to take the canoe because we'd get wet in the kayaks. then he gave us a double paddle and we got wet anyway.

Then he said that we would not have time to get out of the boat.

We paddled at a very chill and comfortable pace and got to the pick up area an hour early. Had we known, we would have taken time at Castlenaud or Beynac. Once we got to the take out an hour early, the staff was pretty surly and we felt like we had imposed on them somehow.

Also, their last shuttle pick up time is the earliest of any of the companies.

In short, I'd recommend conoeing the Dordogne - it's stunning - but maybe check with another company.

The title is harsh I think but why not! Your route went well, the landscape was fabulous, but disappointed because you could have stopped along the route and you didn't. (is it our fault?) And disappointed because you got wet? (water activity so the risk is actually to get wet. A little with the canoe, and a lot with the kayak. That's how it is!) So, in reality, it's fair because you didn't appreciate the behavior of our employee. Given our comments, I know that he makes many efforts to respect, welcome and inform our customers as best as possible, but at the risk of offending you, I understand that he is from time to time less pleasant. When people arrive there, don't say hello, speak in English as if we were family and are offended when we pretend not to understand anything. I can understand that he is disillusioned by this lack of politeness. The idea in any country is to learn the basics of the language, hello, goodbye, thank you, please... and when you arrive somewhere, it is a good idea to start with a pleasant phrase. wait which is: hello sir or hello madam. and if you don't speak more French than that it doesn't matter but you ask the person opposite if you can communicate in English and if it doesn't bother them. Once this is done, I am sure that the welcome will be much warmer. It may be a cultural difference but here, in our company, we pay attention to respect. This is a message for our next tourists :)

This is a magical and must do experience! It inexpensive and you can take as long as you like and stop for swims, lunch, photos of the medieval villages & castles as the river is the best vantage point for photos. The flora & fauna viewed from the river is also stunning. The staff were friendly, helpful and they offer a pick-up service from Sarlat in the off season for those without a car which is really helpful. They also have an hourly shuttle that takes you back to your starting point where most people park their cars which is also helpful. This was one of my favourite experiences in the Dordogne, I would definitely do this again.
