About
In the bay of Santa Maria a couple hundred meters of shore there is a multilevel reef 3m to 8m deep giving a range of depth ideal for marine life to move around and suitable for all visibility conditions, at the end of the reef there is a shallow shipwreck, Bolama or more commonly known as Calderinhia due to the big boiler still left behind. Schools of soldier fish and snappers like to swim around it and are regularly found here in addition to parrot fish, trumpet fish and many others.

- EKTravellerDave0 contributionsGreat Diving Experience - Highly RecommendedI can’t highly recommend these guys enough, what a great dive team. As someone who just passed the open water course in April 2024 in Scotland and only dived as part of the course, this was my first recreational dive and first dive abroad. I was a little nervous but the team at Cabo Verde diving put me at ease straight away. From the pick up at the hotel I was made to feel welcome and the guys who checked me in for the dive welcomed me like an old friend and put me at ease. It was an easy process from filling in paperwork to getting the dive equipment I needed - suit, fins, bcd regs - to getting to the dive boat. The dive sites we went to were amazing, visibility was incredible. We dived 3 Grotes (3 caves), santa antao wreck (twice) and Farrol. (I went on 2 dive days). Plenty to see on the dives, highlights for me were the pufferfish school at Santa Antao and the turtle at 3 grotes - that has to be one of the best moments I have ever experienced. I have it on video as well which i am delighted about. I have plenty of photos of the pufferfish also. We seen rays and nurse sharks under some of the rocks, however I couldn’t get a decent photo of them which is unfortunate. I will definitely be back to dive with these guys again and would recommend if you are ever in Sal for diving, they are the people to go with. Thank you for an amazing dive experience!! (Please ignore time stamp on the photos, I hadn’t set the date or time pre dive)Written February 4, 2025

- MrsSidley0 contributionsWorst diving experience of my life. This trip was the worst diving experience I've ever had in over 20 years. I went with my 13 year old son. The sea was really rough and as we got to the dive site I felt really sick. The woman leading our dive seemed to have it in for me from the start. I assume this was because the price I paid wasn't correct from Viator and they wanted the extra. I had no money or card on me so said they'd have to sort with Viator. This didn't go down well (not my fault?). My son and I were rusty setting up the tanks as we only holiday dive now so they are always set up for us, by a willing a happy crew. I also felt awful and struggling to focus on anything. In these circumstances you'd think we'd be supported. The lead diver just said "when did you last dive?" as was frustrated with us. I had stated already was 18 months ago (on paperwork prior to going and on the day). I didn't think was to much to ask for a hand with getting ready when felt wretched. ALL dive companies I've ever used have been happy to help. Condescending comments weren't required. On the dive, after around 10 minutes I felt even worse and signalled I needed to go up. The lead diver then took me to the top from 12m with no safety stop. Back on the boat I was violently sick and then I experienced new symptoms I've never had in over 20 years diving. Pain in my chest, pins and needles in my legs, arms and face. The dive returned and by this point I'm scared. I was losing sensation now in my limbs and my speech was slurred. I couldn't feel half of my face. I told the lead diver I was scared and needed to go back to shore (we were 5 mins away). She told me I could wait 30 mins for another boat to take me back. This terrified me as my symptoms were getting worse. I thought I was having a stroke. I'm also still throwing up. I tried to explain how bad things were getting and she just said "or you could wait 1 hour 30 mins for us." It's hard to belive at this time for me, that she now decides to use sarcasm and zero compassion or concern for my safety. My hands then started to spasm and I couldn't feel my legs. My 13 year old son still watching. At this point it was decided I needed to get back to shore. I don't know who finally used their brain to make this decision but thank God they did. 2 men had to pull me from the boat as I couldn't walk back to the dive center. My whole body was numb with pins and needles. I stated that this was decompression sickness and had no safety stop. I was told at 12m this wasn't possible. Well it is possible! It happened to me. Whilst it's not common to have DCS at this depth, you still can. When I returned to my hotel I wasn't right for 3 days. I had to stay in my room and it ruined the remaining time I had there. It was unclear if I could even fly home. Now given the serious nature of what happened, you think any good dive school would be concerned regarding my welfare and call to check how I was. They didn't even have the professionalism to do that. The whole experience was so traumatic for me that I will never dive again. I've always loved scuba, each year experiencing new things. This had now been robbed from me. It's obviously not the dive schools fault I felt sea sick but from the patronising comments with the tank set up, no safety stop and the disgusting way I was spoken to when seriously struggling and terrified was unforgivable. I would like to acknowledge the help of the 2 lovely guys who took me to shore though. The only 2 people who acted with care for my wellbeing. NEVER AGAIN.Written December 30, 2024
- Maja G0 contributionsAmazing dive with amazing people❤️My biggest fear has always been the ocean. But I signed up for a test dive and thinking I could back out if I became too scared. But it turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life and I had to come back for a second dive. The staff at Cabo Verde diving were amazing. Not only were they really good teachers and made me feel safe the whole time, but it felt like we became friends and that they really loved their job and enjoyed the dive as much as we did. With only 2 dives I got to see a shipwreck, stingrays, two sharks, a turtle, lobsters, hundreds of pufferfish and many more fish and creatures. Our diving instructor, Shanty stole my heart. I can’t thank him enough for helping me and not making me feel dumb whenever I was stressed or scared. If you are afraid of the ocean like me then ask for Shanty as your instructor! We also had a photographer with us for the first dive and it was so worth it! The photographer was also really helpful and kind. I don’t think we could have better diving instructors anywhere else. Thank you so much for the love and laughter. I will cherish the the memories forever. I’m strongly considering coming back to get my diving certificate at Cabo Verde Diving.Written December 27, 2024
- Edvinas K0 contributionsIncredible Scuba Diving ExperienceScuba diving has been a dream (and also a big fear) of mine for a long time and finally I got a chance to do this at this fantastic island. My instructor Alejandro was fantastic and very patient. We started the day with pool training which included exercises for diving. In the afternoon we went out to the ocean where they picked out the best location for our dive. I will be forever grateful that Alejandro was so calm, relaxed and very supportive the whole dive. I had a panic attack at the beginning of the dive but he calmed me quickly down which gave me confidence that I could continue. The dive went super smoothly and simply was an incredible experience. I would without a doubt recommend this to anyone, chase your dreams and face your fears!Written December 14, 2024

I booked a snorkeling trip. The equipment was provided, the transfer from the hotel was included. Unfortunately, there was no way to try on the glasses beforehand. As a result, water penetrated my glasses throughout the tour. A guide briefly tried to help, but then didn't take any further interest in it. Unfortunately, the group was quite large, so you quickly lost track of where the guide was. The sea was also quite strong that day. Unfortunately, there was no check at any time if something was wrong with someone. I would call myself a really good swimmer, but the whole thing was already challenging for me and some other participants. But there were turtles to see in the wild, which compensated for some.

This tour takes you on a boat ride a bit off the coast of Santa Maria beach where a 130 year old shipwreck site is located.
You get to swim freely, with or without a life vest on, and if you're lucky, you'll see a bunch of wildlife, the most coveted being turtles and small sharks.
We were lucky enough to see a shark, curled up inside one of the shipwreck debris, which was very cute!
When we were giving up on seeing turtles, the guides suggested we take the boat a bit further from the original site, and that's where we spotted a turtle swimming alongside the current flows.
All in all this was an incredible experience which I would definitely recommend. The only reason I'm not rating 5* is because it felt a bit rushed. We were told to jump off the boat in one location and then we had to swim non stop to the final location, about 200m from the original drop off point. So if you got lost in the incredible sights for a minute too long, you would start losing the group and the guide would call you to hurry up.
Still, this did not hinder any of my enjoyment, and swimming in such a naturally beautiful place felt like a blessing.

We booked the tour in German and received a confirmation in English. We then got back in touch and received the answer that there was only one German-speaking colleague. She wanted to tell us the process in German and asked if English was a problem.
It wasn't a problem for us but we had booked the tour in German.
We were picked up from the hotel the next day by an English-speaking guide.
When we arrived at the snorkeling school, we filled out a form, got our equipment and then the German-speaking colleague explained everything about the process.
We then went snorkeling with the English-speaking guide.
We had hoped for a bit more from the underwater world and were disappointed.
Not as colorful as you would imagine and unfortunately we didn't see any turtles (although nobody can do anything about that - 'no guarantee')

Cabo Verde Diving
We are very sorry to hear that your were unconfortable with a non-German speaking writing you to confirm the pick up time, picking you up from your hotel and guiding the snorkeling tour.
We are a multicultural dive center and we made sure that day that you had a very detailed briefing in German before you went in the water.
Thank you for your feedback and we will take it into consideration for future bookings.
Kind regards,

Disastrous experience on Thursday, December 26, 2024. We were 18 Frenchmen to board the zodiac at 3pm to do SNORKELING (PMT snorkeling). It was programmed an hour in the water with a visit to a shipwreck and the turtle site. The welcome was made by a person who spoke good French. Then it was a guide who took us in Zodiac. Arriving at the site, the guide launched and left after 10 minutes. We went at the whim of the current on blind spots. There are questions about security, given that of the 18 people there were children. After 20 minutes the supervisors signaled us back to the boat. That’s when the guide blew his head off by explaining that we had not followed the instructions, in approximate English, and that we were not going to the turtle site. We understood this directive when we came back to the boat point. The whole group was very disappointed. What’s more, at 38 € per person, it’s expensive to go around Zodiac because we get to almost 700 € for the group in 30 minutes. Arriving at the hotel we related this event to the manager of the dive sector who apparently had already echoes on the behavior of this guide. What a pity, that this week of vacation is marred by this unfortunate experience, and I invite the management of this diving club to direct this guide to a function that will be more adapted to his behavior, a potential Darth Vader!

This was a brilliant experience. I took the snorkeling tour, (only 30€) the 3 guides made sure I felt safe at all times. Wetsuits and life jackets made it very easy in the sea and the crew watched everyone all the time.
We saw turtles, amazing fish, a shipwreck and a pilot whale. Our guide Kakau, took videos and photos which he sent to our phones for free!
Great to show friends when we went home.
Will definitely do again next year!
Thanks, from Dave

We did the snorkeling tour with CV Diving. Were picked up at the hotel on time but the drive to the starting point was very short, we could have gone on foot. After a thorough briefing, we walked in group to the pier where we were going to take the boat. It is best to bring flip-flops for this walk, it was not entirely clear to us whether shoes could be taken so we walked barefoot on the road and the pier. Luckily I didn't have any cuts or splinters!
The snorkeling is led by the guide who does it very calmly and well. Those who are less confident in the water can wear a life jacket.
The guide showed us the most beautiful places, we also saw 3 turtles! You'll be in the water for about 40 minutes. All in all, a nice trip for a reasonable price!

This was amazing! We booked this trip in the hopes of seeing turtles and we were not disappointed! From start to finish it was well organised and the staff are so friendly. Shout out to Zoe who was our guide, she helped us to spot all the turtles and even took my camera down to take a video of the shark for us. I would highly recommend this activity!

Lovely experience, despite the sea wasn't the flattest I snorkelled in, I felt very safe, it was easy to follow our guide Abi and Leo from the boat was looking after us at all time. The shipwrech was pretty cool and I was lucky enough to see 3 turtles! Recommended

I am an avid snorkeler, have my own equipment and suit. It goes with me everywhere I go (except on ski holidays). I had come to Cabo Verde especially for the sea turtles and now it turned out that the season was over. Still, I signed up for a snorkeling tour. We went a little further into the sea in a boat, then got off the boat and followed a guide. Everyone was given a life jacket, but I refused, otherwise you couldn't dive. At the end of the tour you will pass a wreck. The visibility of the water was not completely clear and the sun did not always shine, so sometimes it was dark under the water. But I still encountered the sea turtles, so the snorkeling trip was a success. The wreck was only slightly small, but there were a lot of fish swimming around. It takes about 30 minutes. The disadvantage is that you cannot follow your own pace, or swim somewhere longer. It is best to continue following the group, then you will be visible. There are many Zodiacs and Jet Skis sailing around.

Suitable for anyone who has already snorkeled and has a bit of experience. Not recommended for inexperienced people, the introduction is too short. We also went out despite strong waves, but if you have no experience it can be very challenging. The boat trip was also quite demanding, no consideration was given to the waves. Okay for us but not suitable for older or younger people. The guides tried very hard to find turtles. One star deducted because the group was too big. That was a bit annoying because not everyone snorkeled at the same pace and you constantly felt other people's fins somewhere on your body
