          Great activity in Lalibela
We had a really fun evening with Ambachew and his family. If you want to do some activity off the typical tourist path, this is a great opportunity. We learned how to cook injera, shiro and some other local dishes and had a great dinner including traditional coffee afterwards. Ambachew was super reliable and helpful. Best, Theresa & Flo

          Must do in Lalibela
We scheduled an evening cooking school with Ambachew while driving from Gondor to Lalibela only hours before arrival. Ambachew stayed in close touch with us and met us at our hotel with two Tuktuks to drive our group of five to his home. We were warmly welcomed by his wife and spent a delightful evening in their home learning how to make injera, shiro and coffee. All five of us would highly recommend this genuine Lalibela experience. Ambachew is a very clever and incredibly kind guy, he shared a lot of knowledge about traditional life and current situation around Ethiopia and he picked me up at my guest house on time and sent me back safely. It was really nice to walk with him, to know how much he is loved by neighbors.
About cooking class in his lovely house, I could learn many interesting things from Ambachew and his wife, it's unforgettable and precious time.
Highly recommend to have this experience in Lalibela.

        *cool expierence
        *super authentic, nice
        *we made delicious food
*learned the whole process and backgrounds

We heard about Abachews cooking from another couple. They where so happy about the expierence that I definitely wanted to do it too. So when we arrived in lalibela we texted him and made an appointment for the same day. He offered a pick up with tuktuk for a good price but in the end he came and walked with us because we wanted to walk the way. Welcomed by the whole family we felt very good. We were very interested how you do traditionally enjera and we learned about all steps from the grain to the ready enjera. And we could do everything ourselves. Some things worked better then others ;) we got starter, mains and a beautiful coffee ceremony.
So we really enjoyed our two hours at Abachews place, talking to him and learning a lot.

        A total recommendation!

We visited Abachew and his wife at their house, where we were made very welcome. We learnt how to make injera and coffee, then thoroughly enjoyed eating and drinking with them. We really enjoyed the trip and found it educational and very tasty. This was a major highlight of our trip to Ethiopia and gave us a chance to meet a local family beyond the hotels of our visit. The family were friendly and fascinating. Thank you very much for this excellent opportunity.

My family and I called up Abachew on morning that we were interested in taking his cooking class. We had limited time and he was very flexible and made it work. We spend a few hours in the evening learning to make injera (both over the fire and on the electric machine), shiro and firfir. We had some homemade beer and a traditional coffee ceremony. It was such a great experience and certainly a highlight of our trip. If you’re at all curious, I’d book with Abachew and his wife. They are very hospitable and welcome you into their home warmly. They have big dreams to make a separate building for the cooking classes.

If visiting Ethiopia, include the cooking class at the top of your list. This is one of my favorite memories from my first visit to Ethiopia. Yes I made injera. I was also made feel like an immediate part of the family. They know the area well and will enrich your visit in many memorable ways. I will always make a visit to the cooking school a part of my visits to Ethiopia.

Me and my friends had a great time with Abachew he took as to the country side for farming tour and we experience the country side life STYLE. our guide Abachew was excellent and knowledgeable.
After we came back to lalibela we learned to cook Ethiopian food at lalibela cooking and tours . We make 6 different dishes and we got to each make our own injera. We also learned how to roast coffee beans. The food turned out great! We definitely recommend this class if you want to learn to cook Ethiopian food!

Ethiopia has a rich history and culture. By exploring that culture, you automatically encounter the typical Ethiopian cuisine and related ceremonies. In the beautiful region of Lalibela, we had an opportunity to attend the “Cookery School”. That was a fascinating experience. My wife Kristin and I really enjoyed the typical Ethiopian hospitality offered by Ambachew and his wife Fikert.
They explained us “from A to Z” the Injera baking-process and how Shiro is prepared. Shiro is of course indispensable when eating Injera. We obtained detailed explanations on the differences between Bozena and Tegabino Shiro, Injera Firfir and Siga Firfir, etc. Moreover, we had the occasion to taste our “own-cooked” Injera and Shiro in a cosy environment.
A dinner amongst Ethiopians cannot possibly end without the typical coffee-ceremony. After crushing and roasting the coffee beans, we enjoyed the best coffee of the world (in my humble opinion).
Are you looking for a very nice distraction between all your other planned activities in Lalibela? In that case we can surely recommend the Cookery School offered by Ambachew and Fikert. They are amongst the kindest people we ever met in Ethiopia.
