Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- bonf20210 contributionsGreat, knowledge guide!Kanu is a great guide who is very knowledgeable and kind. He has a very good sense of humour too! Be also helped us out with other things around Lalibela. All in all, great guy!Written July 5, 2023
- 539yuw0 contributionsGreat Lalibela Travel ExperienceThanks to Kanu and Joseph, my visit to La Libera was very enjoyable. Joseph was very experienced, knowledgeable, friendly and caring, and helped me solve many problems. While visiting Libera Cathedral, he would tell me the origin and history of each church, as well as the different histories between churches. Not only that, he also knew the best photo location and angle, and I took great photos. After the tour, Joseph also told me where to buy cheap and great coffee, and took me to taste local fruits and Ingra. It was a really great travel experience. you can contact them by these directly, Kanu and Joseph ayele.wasihun93@gmail.com +251912636910Written May 14, 2023
- JohnFLA19510 contributionsSpectacular! What a wonderful tour! It was an amazing experience, thanks to Wisehun and Ephraim. The site is quite large, and their knowledge of the area and its history was remarkable. The story of some Christian People who tried to recreate a new Jerusalem after the Muslims invasion, is endearing. I am 71yo and I wouldn't have been able to discover this place without the help of Wisehun and Ephraim.Written April 11, 2023
- Vinyljustice0 contributionsLailabella day tour of the churchesI was fortunate to have Joseph all to myself before the tourist rush came again. His knowledge, explanations, kindness and generosity are second to none, which I am eternally grateful for. I would recommend him to anyone thinking of doing this tour as a solo traveller or in a group ( he seems the sort who can tend to many people all at once too). He never rushed me, offered and suggested the best places to take photos which is essential for a solo traveller, and we spent a good while inside the churches to take in the different services. Everything was perfect, and I hope we can cross paths again one day.Written December 31, 2022
- Igor C0 contributionsUnforgettable 14 days in EthiopiaWe had a 14 day trip in Ethiopia, mainly to visit Omo Valley and Dallol. We enjoyed the trip. Kanu was great, car optimal, distances long to drive, but educational and inspiring. Selection of lodges good, food something new for us, but great. If you go to Afrika, this is a fine combination of adventure not to touristic vacation. We would highly recommended Access Eco Trekking and Kanu as a guide and we would definitely use them again should we back in Ethiopia. Igor & RomanaWritten February 2, 2020
- surka970 contributionsunforgettable travel experienceEthiopia was almost an unknown country for me, so two weeks of traveling with the local agency Access Eco Trekking Tours has given me a unique opportunity to sink into the rich Ethiopian history, visit amazing archaeological places and cultural monuments (many of which are UNESCO World Heritage), feel different natural landscapes from Danakil Depression to the Simien Mountains, taste excellent food, enjoy music, dance ... and meet heartful people! I would like to thank Mr. Kanu and all the guides and drivers who have contributed to my unforgettable travel experience as they shared knowledge about their country, made me feel safe and gave me the opportunity for a joyful and funny trip with some special challenges such as climbing to the church in the mountain or feeding wild hyenas. I would highly recommend!Written January 23, 2020

My guide Belay was excellent and he keep me busy all day. The town was beautiful and the day was a success. I wish I had one more day to go up the mountain for a little hiking. - timtomm0 contributionsBreathtaking 2-days hike in LalibellaIn January 2019 I did a 2-days hike in Lalibella with Moges. It was a fascinating experience and I enjoyed it a lot! On the first day I got picked up by Moges at the airport and immediately we felt familiar and the atmosphere was really nice. We then took a tuktuk to the beginning of the hiking trail and started to walk. We arrived in a little mountain village around 3-4 hours later and spent the night with a family in their house, had dinner together, music, and danced...and talked a lot. The people were really friendly and open and really tried to make me feel at home. It was a really fascinating cultural experience, not one of those touristy ones you might expect at all! Also the hiking itself was breathtaking, the views were really stunning and we also saw gelada baboons and could watch the local farmers working their fields...and even try the old machines. Moges was a really good guide, he knows a lot about the local life, animals and plants. Also on that special day we were lucky and could participate in the Timkat celebrations in the mountains. Hundreds of people dressed in white dancing on the mountain plain. I was speechless! We also met Moges friends and some of the priests and they even invited me to try dancing with them. On the second day we started the day with playing soccer with the kids (breathtaking indeed at this elevation), had breakfast and started to hike back down. Again the views were stunning!!! Unfortunately we only had 2 days together to enjoy the mountains but it felt much longer! Still now when I think back I cannot believe how lucky I was. It was one of the best experiences Ive had in my life. Thank you again Moges for making it so special! Im really happy that you finally started your own company and I wish you all the best with it!Written July 2, 2019
- Mgberney0 contributionsTrekking from LalibelaMoges and his brother took me and my son on a 2-day trek into the mountains northwest of Lalibela. Thanks to his skill as a guide and his network of connections, we were able to have several unique experiences. When we commented on a farmer using a bull to plow fields, Moges asked the farmer if he would let us try plowing (more challenging than it seemed). We had a home stay in the mountains with a welcoming family who shared their traditions with us. Perhaps most fortunate, we got to see how a remote community celebrated Timkat—the Orthodox Church observance of Epiphany. Moges made these experiences possible for us and patiently answered our questions. I highly recommend trekking with him when you visit Lalibela.Written June 29, 2019
- woutervanouwerkerk0 contributions8 days in north-ethiopiaOur guide Wasihun ‘Kanu’ is a great guy. A self-made man. Speaks English well end clear. He has a great knowledge about the history of Ethiopia, the nature (flowers, animals en plants), cultural habits and politics. Kanu stood out for his flexibility, honesty and his endearing naturalness. We (my father, sister and me) went to Addis, Bahir Dar, Simien, Gondar and Lalibela. Kanu is your perfect travel mate who understands how to make you feel safe, special and let you experience all the beauty and challenges of Ethiopia. Kanu become one big inspiration for us. We will never forget him!Written March 3, 2019
- Rachel M0 contributionsGreat weekend with Kanu!Kanu was a wonderful guide for our time in Lalibela. He totally made the trip for us by taking an incredible amount of ownership over our entire weekend, not just the activities we paid for. Before we got there he helped us plan out the entire weekend to fit what we like: hike up to the monastery on Friday, market tour and cooking class Saturday, church tour Sunday. He then organized all of it and picked us up at our hotel for each activity. He was very nice and eager to answer all of our questions and tell us about Lalibelas's history and culture. Every activity he organized was engaging, fun, and interesting. We wanted to take coffee beans home to our family so he had his wife's mother roast some fresh for us (he said she's the coffee bean roasting expert). On our last night after we finished everything he even took us out to bars in the town for a "going away celebration." It really felt like having a personal guide for the entire weekend. Thanks Kanu!Written November 13, 2018
- keryh1160 contributionsAdventure of my lifeI spent two weeks in Lalibela. Beautiful and at the same time, it makes you realize how poor many people are in the world. In these two weeks I have met so many nice people. Kanu not only went hiking with me, which alone was the biggest adventure of my life, but also brought me closer to the hidden treasures of Lalibela. He always guards that I can do such great things. And Joseph was very concerned about me. The friendliness and helpfulness is very important here. So, when you are in Lalibela, I urge you to contact Kanu. I had the most amazing experience trekking with guide Moges on a 3-day/2-night trek. We began by taking a tuk-tuk from Lalibela to a nearby trailhead, and then hiked up into the breathtaking highlands. We stayed our first night in a tiny village in a family's hut. We had coffee and ate our meals with the family, enjoying their company and learning their customs and way of life. We also toured the village and visited a school (bring books/school supplies! The schools have almost no resources. I'd really wished I'd brought some.) It was a rich, authentic cultural experience that I'll never forget.
The next day we walked a few miles to the Abuna Yosef Conservation Area and climbed to the top of Abuna Yosef - Ehtiopia's third tallest massif! It was a stunning hike with incredible views and beautiful terrain. The giant lobelias (found only at these high elevations) are some of the oddest/coolest plants I've ever seen. We saw about 20 gelada baboons just below the peak. We also spent the night at the park's "lodge", and had an excellent time eating with the park guards and care taker.
The next day was a long, steep hike down to small town, where we were picked up. Every inch of the hiking on this trip was fascinating, either for the natural landscape or the cultural activities/agriculture we observed. I truly cannot recommend this trip enough! Moges was the perfect guide. He's an authentic, down-to-earth person and felt like a friend right away.

During our research project, me and other 8 friends found Eco Access Trekking company and decided to join!
We are architecture students and not everyone where in a good shape of hiking, but I have to admit our guides Joseph and Sami did everything that we would reach the mountain tops and were all the time there for us and walking with our speed. Also, if a person gets too tired there are local people that could carry your personal belongings.
The experience received is the most amazing one in my lifetime. We hiked in mountains with beautiful scenery and had an opportunity to stay with the local family! It was perfect to see how people live in the high-lands and how their life is happening daily.
Everything (food, water, sleeping area), was taken care for us. Nevertheless, as locals are used to cold, in the night it was rather cold and many of us had limited amount of clothes (because of the hiking and carrying your personal belongings ourselves in the bag). The sleeping matrasses and blankets were not the cleanest ones and itching. I wished i would have my own sleeping bag that could helped me from getting this cold.
But even with some minor flaws, all this journey was the perfect experience. My suggestion: bring good hiking shoes, termo clothes and lightweight sleeping bag with you, everything else will be taken care for you!
The beauty of the project is that the guys working in Eco Trekking actually come back and invest in the community. They invest in the school, in facilities, they help people and have close ties with them.
Thank you,Joseph and Sami for making these 3 days unforgetable!

We were a group of 9 doing the 3 day hike with our incredible guides Sami and Joseph. The first day was the toughest in terms of walking (we were not all experienced hikers) but our guides took us up slowly and the scenery was stunning. We stayed in a fantastic village home and had coffee with the family, and danced with the kids in the evening. On the second day a group of us went on the hike up Mt Abune Yousef, seeing eagles and baboons and incredible views. Another group stayed behind and visited the school, which I understand was a great experience. The third day we walked back down to Lalibela and, after a break for lunch and a shower back at our hotel, had a fantastic tour of the churches, which was very informative. The food provided was amazing and there was so much of it, and the hosts at the village were wonderful. The guides were great, and told us so much about the local culture. Staying with the family in the village is an experience you won't get anywhere else, and is so much better than staying at a tourist lodge. I would recommend this tour to anyone planning on visiting Lalibela. (I would also advise bringing pens, as all the children we met on the way up were asking for pens for school!)

We had a great time on the 3 days community based trek. The hike is not so difficult, and you get to see great views, unique animals and the most important- you get to experience an authentic community village in the mountains! On both night we slept in a local family house, one of the best experiences we had in Ethiopia.
Joseph our guide was absolutely great, patient and kind. Kanu the owner organized everything perfectly, we didn't had to worry about a thing. On top of that, he is truly a good man, who continue to help us even after we left Lalibela!
We really recommend about the trek and about Kanu, you will not regret!

It's been 2 months since we joined the 3-days lalibela community based trekking.
We highly recommand the hike because the scenery is rewarding: simple huts, steep fields, horses and cows living amidst green meadows, good food, cold nights and clear sky!
Thanks to Joseph and Kanu, we have been welcomed in a truly exceptional manner in those highlands and felt...at home.

You'd have to ask them for a quote. I did this trek as part of a 9-day package that I arranged through the company that included a tour of the Denakil Depression.
