About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- carolbD915IX0 contributionsEducational look at Taos art scene and history.Sam is a wonderful resource for all things historical in Taos. We thoroughly enjoyed his stories, aided by his collection of pictures and art. He helped us appreciate the art and culture around us.Written October 25, 2024
- dldorrough0 contributionsWorth the time but perhaps not suitable for children.Had mixed expectations for the tour as the reviews were well and truly mixed with some bad ones sliding in citing Sam's inability to keep politics out of it, others claiming he showed their family indecent images, and still others whining about how he focused the tour on his own artwork. All comments were true, but not accurate. He definitely has strong political views but as long as we didn’t provide an opening, he didn’t venture too far down that road. The indecent images? Well, D.H. Lawrence, the author of Lady Chatterly’s Lover, after relocating to Taos, took up painting nudes. Sam showed us a picture of one (no frontal imagery at all) and briefly discussed the scandal involved with Lawrence’s new career. As far as his artwork was concerned, yep, he had it, and lots of it. It was, appropriately enough, used as visual aids during the tour. Portraits, buildings, film posters, etc. While we aren’t ready to give the tour five stars, it was quite informative and, in general, enjoyable. I must point out that part of the reduced rating is through no fault of his own. At the time of our tour there was considerable construction in the area that not only interfered with getting to the meetup, but in some areas actually interfered with the tour. Bottom line? It's worth the time, but remember it's a person's view of history and viewpoints may vary.Written October 3, 2024
- Getaway612574738150 contributionsDelightfulWe so enjoyed our time with Sam today. His stories and visuals (including his own drawings), together with walking around to the sites, brought the history of Taos to life. It was interesting to visit several galleries of local art and to actually meet a couple of the artists. I hope to come back to Taos, I will engage Sam again. I suspect he has many more stories to tell.Written August 29, 2024
- Meraz0 contributionsGREAT, informative tour with Sam!Sam who is a vet, artist, makes jam AND a storyteller was a delightful and informative guide. Yes, he took us into some art galleries but Taos’ evolving history is woven into artist who came and changed the timbre of the city. We were really glad to have had this experience with Sam. Oh and yes, we were a group of 8 but none fo that impacted the enjoyment of the tour.Written July 30, 2024
- prettyvacant670 contributionsA great introduction to TaosSam was awesome! This tour was a great way to get oriented to downtown Taos as a first-time visitor. I went back to several of the places we covered and got a good sense of Taos's history and culture. Sam is an engaging and well-versed guide. I highly recommend this experience.Written July 29, 2024
- TexasClaire0 contributionsOkay. As others have said, this is NOT a private tour, which I thought I was paying for. I was surprised and not particularly happy that we spent time in several private galleries (which is my bad for not carefully reading the info on this site). We also went into an artist's collective, where Sam led us to his own artwork. Also as others have mentioned, there was no real pressure to buy but I felt a bit uncomfortable. The entire tour was in an area directly around the plaza which was fine since there's a lot of history close in. Sam also gave us a reading list. It was all okay but I can only give a 3 out of 5.Written May 8, 2024
- ConiferGirl0 contributionsNot a Private TourNOTE: This is not a private tour. The description says 'Private' and 'one-on-one' but we were included with 6 others and told that it was for a single guide (?) and that the description needed to be corrected on the website. Otherwise, nice gentleman, lives in Taos so he also shared personal stories.Written April 14, 2024

- amishamy0 contributionsFun and interesting tour of TaosWe take tours everywhere we go because it’s such a great way to learn about a city. Sam did a great job on this tour sharing the history of Taos and the plaza in town. He had some great stories and since he’s an artist himself, he had some personal drawings to illustrate them, which was fun. He shared some interesting facts about movies that were either shot in the area or about the area and being movie buffs, we liked that. His stories about Dennis Hopper led us to visit his grave in Taos and that was something unexpected and very cool. I highly recommend taking this tour and spending some time with Sam if you visit Taos.Written November 13, 2023

- Traveler6213490 contributionsTake the Tour with Sam!We had a great tour of Taos proper with Taos Walking Tours led by Sam Richardson, an artist, writer and story teller. In addition to a charming guide fitting characteristically into the local Taos scene, a great story teller with his hand drawn picture of local characters of the past. Do not pass up this tour.Written October 23, 2023

Sam was a wonderful tour guide, leading us around the historic Taos Plaza, through the John Dunn shops on Bent Street, and more. He had a binder full of photos to illustrate his narrative and to give it more context. As an artist himself, he introduced us to some of the artists who own galleries in the plaza, and recommended a semi-secret exhibit of DH Lawrence paintings that I enjoyed seeing at the conclusion of our tour. Highly recommend this introduction to Taos!

Sam is an amazing historian and guide. We spent the entire hour or so in the square area, learning history by seeing historical spots and statues and meeting incredible artist shopkeepers and chocolatiers. This is the perfect way to begin your visit to Taos! If you haven’t taken it before, please join this tour. Sam’s enthusiasm is contagious — and his humor is infectious. 😊 We are very glad we took this valuable tour.

Sam had stories that brought old Taos to light in surprising and humorous ways. He carried a packet of images to make his stories more pointed. We talked with some folks who are part of contemporary Taos.
Thanks, Sam!

Our tour guide Sam was great, very friendly and knowledgeable, and brought with him photos and fun references. Great stories and history we learned that we wouldn't have heard just walking around on our own. Definitely recommended this walking tour!

Sam was very knowledgeable and entertaining. Taos however, seriously needs to work on their infrastructure. The all-important town square was tore up and, apparently, has been so for a long time. Otherwise, we learned a lot about this vibrant town and it's varied history. Thanks Sam!!

Sam is so very knowledgeable of the Taos area history which goes back to the 1600’s. He knows historical influencers of the region as well as all of the local shop owners. He is not only great at answering questions, but of relating to both young and older visitors. He is inspiring and you can tell he loves his hometown.

As luck would have it, we were the only two people on this tour with Sam Richardson. He's a delightful guy and very knowledgeable about Taos history. It's a great way to begin a visit to Taos -- a little background on the history, people, and events that created this wonderful place.

Anita was an awesome tour guide! Highly recommend taking a tour with her as she's extremely knowledgeable on the history of Taos. She kept the tour interesting and moving along. Before we knew it, our 1 hour was up and we found ourselves wanting to keep walking and learning. She also gave some awesome recommendations on restaurants and other sites to see around the area.

Took this wonderful one hr walking tour w/Anita. She was practically a walking encyclopedia on Taos. The tour was educational and Anita was very entertaining. We could tell she is passionate about Taos and all of the southwest's terrain and history. She went above and beyond to give our large group the best customer care, being prompt, professional and super friendly. She even gave us a list of fantastic historical books on the southwest. Which we did buy. Take the tour and have some fun!!

Our walking tour was at 11, but there were other times earlier and later, as well.
Great central meeting place in the Plaza. Easy to get to.
