A great place to stay in Berastagi
Great clean and simple place. Rooms are spacious and have everything you need, though do not expect any modern stuff or luxury. Mery is amazing, hospitable , knowledgeable and gives clear and precise instructions and suggestions. Do follow her leads as they are just great. The tour to the volcano with her husband is also good especially if she arranges partners to reduce costs. It is not by chance that she keeps on getting those excellent reviews for year. Do not miss the wholesale vegetable and fruit market next to her house and plan on spending there some time - superb photo opportunities.

Great, clean and simple Guesthouse where you really are a guest!
This is a simple, great guesthouse that has hospitality plus. Mari and her family welcome you into their home and set you up with maps, advice and recommendations to best enjoy the area. We met other nice travellers and were really happy with our choice.

Abdy and Mery are fantastic warm, knowledgeable hosts
Fantastically warm and knowledgeable. Mery gave us lots of very helpful information for our stay in Berastagi. She really knew what information we would need and how to explain things clearly. Later, we did a tour to Sinabung with Abdy. He was very knowledgeable and great company. I'd recommend taking any kind of tour with him just for the interesting company. And staying with them at the homestay too if they have space.

          Great stay & awesome tour!
We had a LOVELY stay with the family. The location was right in Berastagi which gave us the opportunity to see the city aswell. The family was so so sweet and took great care of us. In the morning we did the sunrise vulcano tour and it was so impressive! The lovely host (Meri) got up super early in the morning to make us the most lovely banana pancakes to eat on top of the vulcano. Abdy took us on the tour and showed us everything and had the best stories about the vulcano. 10/10 would recommend!

          Sibayak mountain, Sinabung mountain
Pros: Very warm and friendly, the banana pancake is delicious. Despite solo female tour, Mery and Abdy is very helpful to me (when trekking and hiking). They also explain a whole lot of things, like the mountain's flora and fauna, well although it's not a complete explanation (limited theory knowledge).

          Amazing! The best I've experienced!
At first you stand up in the morning and think what the hell am I doing.... but then you get in the car and Abdy our tour guide is already pumped up and excited to go! During the way up it is only looking in the dark and trying not to fall! After the sunset you think you are in an totally different world. It's an sight u will never forget, it is so beautifull! Abdy will talk all the way about the history of the vulcano, really interesting to hear. He also knows a lot about what happend at the vulcano and what happens to tourist/locals on the vulcano. I had also a lot of fun wat Abdy, because his humor is soo freaking good!! He made the experience a lot better and I cannot wait to do the longer tour with him again!

          Extremely good
I stayed with my boyfriend in the Nachelle Homestay in Berastagi. In here they provided tours like climbing the vulcano. Abdy is the men of Mery from the lovely Homestay. He would bring us with the car and then hiked together with us, he knows the way verry good en knows where to stop. His sense of humor is amazing and before we know we were up and down. We have seen and climb places that nobody did because he know the way so well. His stories are amazing and he also can tell you a lot about the nature. This was incredible, amazing and so much fun! I would do this again, but only with these people because they make my day.

          Awesome experience
I was put on a tour with Abdy and it was the best that could have happened to me. He has great knowledge and because he knows the area so well we got to places where no one else was and where he also explained what we saw. And not to forget his fine sense of humor. We had a marvelous time with him. Highly recommended!!!

          best guiding experience
Because we wanted to see the sunrise from the top of Sibayak Volcano we booked a guide. We stayed at Nachelle Homestay were the owner, Abdy, is also a tour guide. We started early and his lovely wive prepared a delicious breakfast to go for us. It was completely worth to book Abdy, as he taught us so many interesting things about the volcano and the plants growing on it. Also, he is a great photographer, showed us his collection and took some nice shots from us. Without Abdy, the hiking experience would definitely not be the same memorable experience. The price for all we got is more than fair. There is the drive included, the tour, and a swim in a scenic hot spring.

          Absolutely Breathtaking
We started climbing at 5AM and was arrived at the peak right before sunrise. The path way during the wee hour is a bit difficult as we just depending on head lamp. But after 30 minutes walk, it become much better, no slippery rocks or ground / stairs but then still have to be careful as the cliff is just nearby the corner and dangerous in certain places. Approaching the peak, we can heard the hot steam sound and the bad smell of sulphur. Once arrived, the scenery were so amazing and spectacular, can see Sinabung Mountain from far and the sunrise at the peak was so marvellous! Our guide, Abdy is very informative guide, really helpful and skillful on taking photograph, videograph and taking care of us during the climbing. This place is worth visit to those who love mountain and photography. Really recommended!

          Haunting reminder of nature’s power
Really informative tour of the region. The Ghost town at the foot of the Sinabung volcano was particularly surreal. People are still living around these parts because they have no other option.

          Amazing day exploring the volcanoes.
I was lucky to have great weather and Abdy as my guide (with his excellent knowledge of the region) to see these surreal giants. Well worth the trip!

Amazing volcano with a great guide!
We hiked up the volcano together with our tour guide Abdy, who was an excellent guide with lots of experience and full of information and cool stories. Abdy is fun and entertaining all the way to the top. It's quite a hike by the way, we took more then 1 hour to get up and it's the same way back. From the summit we had a magnificent view over the entire Berastagi Karo regency and Sinabung Volcano, we were the only ones at the peak. It was truly an unforgettable experience. We had a lovely walk with Abdy, he was an excellent guide, he is a very experienced and professional guide who makes sure that your trip is safe and fun. He also made a great photo series and video on the way, top!. We were so lucky to have him as our guide. Thoroughly recommended!

          Abdy is a great guide
We awoke at 4:00AM and met Abdy at 4:30AM. After a chilly 45-minute drive, we were halfway up Mount Sibayak, an active volcano. We saw a sharply steep walk ahead of us — first pavement, then jungle, then barren moonscape. At the onset, the trees and vines made a canopy so thick that at times I felt like we were in a cave. After sweat-leeching heat and humidity of our Southeast Asian lifestyle the last year, the bite of cold we felt here was quite a shock. Aside from light jackets and a krama, we had nothing for warmth. Once we broke through the tree line, the wind made it colder, but the peak was near. Our goal was to watch the sunrise from the top, and we made it! But there was one problem: no sun. Weather is unpredictable at these heights, and cloud cover enveloped the entire area. There were occasional breaks in the clouds, but they were fleeting. This is the best shot I got during one of them. During the following descent, we decided to warm up near a steam vent. Mount Sibayak doesn’t spew lava, but there is plenty of other geothermal activity. We saw boiling mud and screaming, sulphur-encrusted steam valves that sound like a jet taking off. They stink, too, but living in Japan and going to hot springs for so long has probably raised our crew’s rotten-egg-smell tolerance levels above and beyond the average human family. Once back at the car, we actually drove to a nearby hot spring for a soak and breakfast. It was unlike any hot spring that I had ever experienced. There were about four outdoor pools, all facing the volcano we had just climbed down from, and you could eat your breakfast as you sat in the tub! Next to the main tub was a blocked-off area with about fifty rabbits. We sat in the tub with our fried noodles and Sumatran coffee (yum) watching rabbits in the foreground and a steaming volcano in the background. Surreal. Abdy, our host, was also a great guide, full of information about the volcanoes in Indonesia and the medicine plants from the nature and he has very good humor. From the hot springs, he took us to a Burmese temple and then onto a traditional Batak Karo house. Being Batak himself (and growing up in one of these houses), he gave us insight that we really found fascinating. Abdy speaks multiple languages, including fluent French — studying there for 3.5 years before returning to build an organic farm in Berastagi. He was patient to explain and answer questions, but also goofed off with our boy when he needed it. When we returned, it was hard to believe that it was only around lunchtime. We fully recommend Abdy!

As soon as we arrived at Nachelle Homestay, Meri welcomed us and made us feel at home. She provided a thorough map of the local area, and wrote down a few Indonesian dishes and phrases in Bahsa that we could use to communicate our food preferences in restaurants. The room is spacious, clean, with a hot shower and our windows looked out to the Sibayak and Sinabung volcanoes.
Meri’s homemade pizza was delicious, be sure to order 12 hours in advance to allow her to prepare the dough. Her husband Abdi was an amazing guide and calm driver. He was constantly joking around and making us laugh. He taught us a lot about the volcanic rocks, as well as the healing and nutritional properties of the local flora. When going to Berastagi, make sure to stay at Nachelle home stay as Meri, Abdi, and her family are such kind, caring and thoughtful people who will make your stay and experience memorable and enjoyable!
