- MAP120 contributionsGreat visit, worth the time and price.Did a self guided tour. Boy how this has changed for the better since I lived in Great Falls. We spent almost 3 hours here to see it all. I'd seen much of it before, but hadn't been in the home and the gallery is new. Definitely a "must-see" if you're in Great Falls.Written October 12, 2023
- ArtsyGalBaltimore0 contributionsC.M. Russel: An American Western ArtistWithin a residential setting, this is a well designed museum. Russel's home and studio can be toured. What struck me was how curation could introduce an artist in such a way that you left with an appreciation of Russel's talent. I reveled in the exhibit of Russel's letters with envelopes as a unique storytelling. There were multiple rooms of painting, sculpures, and crafts. Also exhibits of current artists and Russel's contemporaries. I found the lower level bison exhibit outstanding. Wonderful giftshop. I highly recommend this museum which has heightened my understanding of the history oand talents of western art.Written October 8, 2023
- MtAir20 contributionsWell managed museumWe took 2 of our friends here and they enjoyed it completely. Would recommend it to adults that are interested in the west.Written September 3, 2022
- winemaven80 contributionsThis is the reason we returned to Great Falls! If you are a fan of Charlie Russell's work, this museum is worth a detour! We were here several years ago an still spent half a day here. We always learn something new! Also, the museum shop is excellent!Written June 27, 2022
- BayouBear0 contributionsThe Best Cowboy ArtHaving been a fan of C.M. Russell it was an exceptional treat to visit his museum, his studio and home. The foundation has done an an amazing job of preserving all aspects of his creative works and home. C.M. Russell's art has stood the test of time and is as exciting to view today as it was when the works were originally done. You will also get to see some of his writings, which give you great insight into him and his love of the west.Written May 9, 2022
- Lisa C0 contributionsFabulous museum experienceEven if you are not a C.M. Russell fan, you will appreciate this artist's contributions to American art and his desire to hold on to the West as it was when he was young.Written August 23, 2021
- Lysippos0 contributionsDisappointedI had visited here 38 years ago and didn't really remember what it was like. I was disappointed that there weren't more Russell paintings. Too much space is taken up with modern or other form artists. I didn't come here to see them; I came to see more Russells. Please acquire some more.Written July 31, 2021
- eur0star0 contributionsA highlight of any trip to MontanaA world-class museum. Also includes his studio and their home. Very open despite expansion construction. See his art plus are from other western artists. Large enough to accommodate large groups and not feel crowded. Some of the works in the basement floor are stunning. Do not miss them. Nice gift shop. A tremendous stop. Spend an hour or spend a day. We spent 90 minutes before lunch and 90 minutes after. Must do in Great Falls.Written July 5, 2021

- geraldb3230 contributionsCaptured on CanvasI did not realize the extent of Charlie Russell's creations but I do know he certainly captured the imaginations of millions over the years. Make sure to spend time at the Russell's home and studio next door to the Gallery. I was impressed with how the studio was "preserved" for all to see. Many stories are described throughout each of the buildings. Amazing how his wife Nancy kept him on track all those years!Written December 27, 2019
- Janet A0 contributionsGreat Western ArtVery nice art museum with not just C M Russell works, but others also. Don't miss his house and studio - almost more interesting than the art.Written October 27, 2019
- James M0 contributionsA must see to see the early West in art.Whether an art lover or not, you will be captivated by the life of the late 1800s and early 1900s that Russell and others captured for our enjoyment and memories. He knew the life of a cowboy and shares that visually with us. As well, the museum captures the First Peoples of that time in vivid art forms. Along with the Lewis and Clark Center, it is worth a special stop or trip in your travels.Written October 3, 2019
- KYW20130 contributionsVery nicely doneI didn't think I was really a fan of cowboy art, but my husband wanted to go, so I agreed. It was very pleasantly surprised. Russell's art was much more interesting than I expected, and the museum does a very nice job of providing narrative and context for each piece. You could also tour the house and studio, which are located on the same property as the museum. We spent about 2.5 hours there and I never found it boring.Written September 29, 2019
- cdrh0 contributionsExcellent Paintings and StoryGood place to visit for the mature coupes. Not a lot of interest to hold kids attention. Lots of paintings, art, and interesting articles to see here. Paintings depict the early western culture and tells the story of C.M. Russell.Written September 28, 2019

We spent a couple of days in Great Falls as part of a road trip to 5 national parks. We visited the museum on the only rainy day of our trip. I am very glad we had rain and ended up at the museum. We were not familiar with Charlie Russell and his work; the museum does a wonderful job of not only showcasing much of his art work but explaining his life story and how he came to be the renowned artist that he was. Also included in this story of his life is the huge role his wife Nancy played in his commercial artistic success. Absolutely fascinating story. Major bonus in visiting the museum is also seeing the Russell's home and artist studio adjacent to the museum. The buildings are the actual buildings and the interior spaces have been recreated in incredible detail. It's like stepping back in time into Charlie and Nancy's lives there in Great Falls. Highly recommend visiting this museum if you are in the area.

My late beloved husband David & I had planned to come to Great Falls just to visit this museum. He would have loved this so much!
You can actually buy your ticket online through Trip Advisor; however, if you’re age 60+, there’s a senior discount which doesn’t show, so be aware of that.
The museum is open 10 am to 5 pm every day, & it is very well-thought out in its design. When you check in at the gift shop entry, they give you a map: Use it! It helps direct you through the story & events of Charlie Russell’s life, & is well worth it. Each gallery also is labeled, up on the wall by the ceiling, so if you feel a little lost, you can always check it against the map to know exactly where you are…
My best suggestion is to follow the map & read the major events which shaped his life & therefore, his art! He was a very thoughtful man, & so gifted. If it hadn’t been for his amazing life partner, who turned out to be a fantastic business manager, he might not have become nearly as well-known for his work, which captured a vanishing age, especially here in Montana.
To discover that a book his father read to him as a young boy fired his imagination to love the West & to go to Montana is a tribute not only to his father, but also, to how powerful a force loving to read can be!
After you complete the galleries & the lower level, you’ll be ready to visit the Russell studio & home! Both are quite charming.
I took my time, focusing mostly on everything about Charles M. Russell in his museum, & I spent about 2 hours in the main museum. The studio & home together afterward were about a half hour.
Enjoy your visit!

We arrived at the C.M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana to revisit one of my favorite art museums. Russell's paintings are beautiful and capture the history and heart of the West. His paintings tell a story and so it's important to have plenty of time to enjoy his work and the other artists and historical exhibits at the museum. When we arrived there were 38 adults standing and talking in front of the Russell Museum. We had booked our ticked over Trip Advisor which was great. However, when we entered the museum was having difficulty checking the tour group of 38 in. We waited and then I approached the desk and said we had prebooked. Behind the desk, they were very nice and said even though they had the print out of our booking we still had to be checked in. So we waited. When they finally advised the group of 38 to enter and said they would get their tickets coordinated while they were touring, they checked us in. The C.M. Russell Museum is such a wonderful experience and the gift shop is great. The staff was very courteous but I think they need to have a liason for large groups.

Very disappointing. We went several hundred miles out of our way and used up a day of our vacation to visit this museum. We then went to the Montana Historical Museum in Helena the next day. Compared to the Montana Historical Museum in Helena, the Russell Museum in Great Falls is small with mostly mediocre paintings. We spent less then an hour there.
I have been a Charlie Russel fan for 50+ years, as my grandfather had over a dozen prints on his walls. We highly anticipated the trip to the Russell Museum, and we were bitterly disappointed. It is clear this museum is struggling, and not getting local community support. For example, there are no signs on the freeway nor any signs in town directing tourists to the museum!
The museum is clean, Covid-19 aware. Friendly staff.
Unfortunately this museum should be shut down and the artwork moved to the Montana Historical Museum in Helena.

Despite having to wear a mask while at the C.M. Russell Museum, our visit there was outstanding. The staff was helpful and friendly, and the exhibits were great. We enjoyed the gift shop very much. We toured the gallery, which was laid out in a very orderly way with a nice flow from one area to the next, and there was lots to see. We also toured the family home and Russell's studio, which were both interpreted well. We spent three hours and it was well worth it!

Any visit to Great Falls, MT would be incomplete without touring the C.M. Russell Museum. If you know anything about Montana history, particularly the famed Western artist Charlie Russell, to miss this museum would be very unfortunate. Not only will you be able to view some of Charlie's best works, but other Western artists as well. And you can explore Charlie's workshop and his and Nancy's home on the same site.

I have been a fan of western U.S. art for many years. However, it took until today for my wife and I to visit this site commemorating Charlie Russell's iconic artistic career and life. The museum covers Russell's work and the work of other historic and contemporary artists of the American and Canadian west. It also features an excellent exhibition on the role of bison in western American history and culture. This site also includes Russell house and studio while emphasizing the absolutely critical role his wife Nancy played in ensuring his stature and success. This is essential visiting for anyone interested in western U.S. history and art. Since the museum us in a residential neighborhood, you'll need to allow time to drive to find a place to eat lunch then return. Allow several hours to properly appreciate this experience!

To be able to see his home and studio where he worked. It gave us an intimate view of the artist you can't find anywhere else I took my Kindergartener who is 1/2 Blackfeet so she could get a perspective of art from an artist who lived the times. She took so many pictures with her camera and asked really good questions. I was impressed with the artwork on display and also the Indigenous peoples artifacts on display.
We learned he was not just a wonderful artist, but he also took many other artists under his wing. It was an amazing afternoon.

... then the C.M. Russell Museum is an absolute must. Next to Remington, Russell is the biggest name in Western art, and he may well be the better artist. In addition to the quality art viewing (full disclosure, some key pieces are likely to be out at any given time), you will also get insight into Russell's life and how the changing west influenced his art. The museum also has a solid collection of other Western art.

This is a first class museum. We were very impressed with such a beautiful and well designed facility. The exhibits were well thought out, and made sense of the artists growth. There are a number of exhibits and programs throughout the lower levels of the museum. One doesn't expect such a large well built and well appointed museum in a medium sized city off the beaten path. Kudos!
