About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- chang l0 contributionsGreat city tour about Leon/Nica history and cultureDid the private city tour with Franklin. Took closed to 4hour to go through some major point around city center. Not too much walking but a great intensive amount of history knowledge about the city/country and culture. Frankin is very professional on the history background. And can clearly introduce all the detail and answer the question. This is really a good suggested trip. A foreigner traveling to the city wont be able to understand and appreciate the history and culture easily without a professional guide.Written January 6, 2025
- Avid10 contributionsNot Yellowstone but a genuinely interesting way to spend a few hours in LeonWe went with guide Franklin and his brother-in-law/driver, Darwin, to the Jacinto mud pools. They were both very friendly and Franklin provided some background to the region's history en route. The boiling mud pools are an interesting feature and you get pretty close. We're usually nervous of trips that sell interactions with communities in case they are too staged but the lady that demonstrated tortilla making was outstanding, as was her cousin, who provided the venue. Darwin has relatives in the village and it's clear that there's a genuine warmth to the people who live there. We encourage people to visit. It's gentle, warm hearted and educational.Written January 5, 2025
- njd14880 contributionsGreat service. Excellent and informative experience.Franklin arranged everything for me, including my airport pick up and hotel transfers. Julio was my guide and agreed to take me to the cathedral as soon as it opened. As a result, I have the entire rooftop to myself. Beautiful experience.Written October 20, 2024
- macmill0 contributionsA lovely ride in the countrysideA lovely way to spend the morning. We were taken to a local farm where we picked up our horses and had a gentle amble through the surrounding countryside on horseback culminating in spectacular views of volcanos and El Tigre lagoon having swum in the lagoon the previous day we opted not to trek down to the water and swim but this is an option. We can ride, but I would say that the horses were tame and well-behaved to accommodate those who have no experience. The horses were also well cared for, not like some others we've seen around Leon. The farmer and his family were very friendly, and we enjoyed petting the goatsheep (a cross between a goat and a sheep that we've never seen before) as well as the various chickens ducks, etc Miguel from Vamos travel was an attentive guide. The only disappointment was the ride is advertised as 3 hours, but it was barely 2, so quite an expensive activity but still worth it on our opinionWritten August 27, 2024
- macmill0 contributionsA great day out spectacular scenery and good guideThis was an interesting day out from Leon, Miguel from Vamos travel was an excellent guide and we had a very enjoyable day visiting the hot mud geyser, old Leon and swimming in the el tigre lagoon. The scenery around Leon is spectacular and it's a shame that many tourists only ever see the city and go volcano surfing as there is clearly so much more to see and do. One thing of note the path down to the lagoon and back up is very steep and slippery so wear sensible footwear although the swims worth the hike. Would recommend this da trip.Written August 26, 2024
- 287chadg0 contributionsA tour company I have never been more impressed with in my life. I highly recommend giving them a try. -Chad (USA)To start off, we are from the United States. They have a traveling warning in effect. This company I cannot express enough of. The organization of the tour was beyond important, and they exceeded that beyond far. The fact that they made us feel safe, important, and cared for, was what hit the spot. Our tour was private so we had many different guides. Each and every single one of them impressed me (and my wife))(I am an avid traveler myself and a business owner). Their English was exceptional, but their sense of care for us was something I have rarely seen. Anywhere in the world. And that I something I'm impressed I'm willing to even say. Not once did I myself or my wife feel unsafe, or just another tourist. They made us feel special. They did so many small things that just simply melted our hearts. The schedule the owner created (Franklin) was very evident that it was our schedule. There were non stop activities planned, but if we weren't feeling up to it or wanted to do something else, immediately that occurred. They really just understand what is important for American tourists, or just tourists in general, and they make it happen. I could write a novel on how epic my experience was with them and the joy they created. The memories I now have will forever be within my soul and my heart. Give them a try, and you will see what I mean. Thank you Franklin, much love from us. -ChadWritten March 30, 2024
- Salsa2480 contributionsDon't tour on a Sunday but do use this company. We did this walk on a very hot Sunday. Sadly all the buildings we were to visit were closed. Miguel did his best to alternate with the art gallery, it was very good. The next day Franklin made the effort to get us on top of the church first. We appreciate all they did to help us. Great guys & recommend,Written March 16, 2024

- Franklin H0 contributionsIntelligent caring attentive guides - triple wow!!Franklin runs an amazing company - Vamos travel. We did many of the activities. His walking tour was thorough and Franklin is very knowledgeable and well read. His team of guides were consistently kind, attentive, and adaptable to our preferences. We travel a lot and we like to have more of an intelligent conversation with guides and that’s what we got. Every guide was personable and really listened to what we wanted to do. The volcano was so much fun for all ages. Every event we did — the timing was perfect. Our guide Sergio made sure we hit the sunset for our volcano slide. He also noticed what we were interested in and made changes to the itinerary based on our interests. He talked our way into seeing the new Managua cathedral which was closed but the guards opened it for him and us. In Granada, we felt like we were walking with the unofficial mayor of the town since it seems everyone knows our guide Julio. Julio knew we liked churches and designed a driving tour of 16 churches before timing it just right to see the lava in the Masaya volcano. He also made dinner reservations for us and everyone in the restaurant greeted us by name and mentioned how they liked Julio. Finally, I️ have to say that Franklin is one of the most meticulous travel guides and agents I️ have ever met and he is very calm too. He always responded quickly on WhatsApp and he got all the details right. His company is a reason to come to Nicaragua. I️ can’t recommend him and his team highly enough. Triple wow!Written February 25, 2024
- Judy S0 contributionsNeat but not enough time to adequately view the magmaWe were excited to see the lava but were only allowed to stay for 7 minutes due to restrictions. Nobody notified us of this until an hour or so before the tour. The top is very crowded and it’s difficult for you to squeeze in and see anything in the allotted time. If you have a car and don’t mind driving at night then it might be best to go by yourself rather than book the tour. Otherwise, we enjoyed our talk about various topics with our guide, Miguel.Written February 19, 2024
- Explorer424786954780 contributionsFranklin is a wealth of knowledge. He has inspired us to further continue our study on Latin American history. The tour was brilliant . I strongly advise a private tour with Franklin . His passion for Leon was infectious and his knowledge outstanding. An intelligent young man who represented his city well. He patiently answered all our questions and inspired us to learn more.Written November 18, 2023

- capweekend0 contributionsHad fun despite Mother NatureIt was too bad Mother Nature didn't cooperate so we could do our tour, but Vamos Travel was very helpful once we were canceled and our guide Julio was great. He spoke great English and was very informed about his Country. His stories were awesome.Written August 14, 2023
- marisalya20230 contributionsBeautiful views of LeonI enjoyed my tour in Leon, my guide was Freddy and he was very knowledgeable of the town and knew so much information. I booked the 9am tour, which was perfect. I was able to tour the Catedral de Leon with hardly anyone there and the weather was not too warm. The view was breathtaking, with surrounding views of the city is just incredible. You do have to walk up a few flights of stairs, but its not too bad. It is definitely worth the view. We walked around town, it did seem to go a bit fast, I would of liked more time to stay at the Catedral and explore the town more. I recommend a longer time to stay and observe the town and Catedral it is just beautiful.Written July 9, 2023
- Hugh W0 contributionsGreat ValueTour guide Victor was fantastic! Invaluable source of information regarding his country. We went to the volcano and because of weather they would not let us in....he took the time to take us to some great views and then took us back a second time (which he did not have to do) and they let us go up to the volcano! It was quiet and you could actually hear the volcano spewing lava.....INCREDIBLE!!!!Written June 17, 2023

Very professionally run and managed company. We booked the Cerro Negro tour along with several other transfers between cities during our trip. Franklin was in close touch with us from the moment we landed and throughout our stay, so we knew exactly what to expect and when, and he offered some independent sight seeing suggestions as well. The guide, Sergio, was friendly, informative and very attentive to safety on the volcano. Drivers were professional and punctual, everything was delivered on time and as advertised. We were very happy with Vamos Nicaragua!

Today we did the private volcano boarding tour with our guide Franklin. We thought we could get a pickup straight from managua where we where staying because we could choose the pickup location in Managua. After booking we learned that that wasn't possible and had to get there with our own transportation or Franklin could arrange private travel. For us that was too expensive so we we went with the microbus from Managua to Leon. Franklin was extremely helpful and easy to reach and quick to reply on WhatsApp.
When we arrived in leon he picked us up in a modern vehicle and was very friendly. On the way to the volcano he told us a lot about the history of leon.
Arriving at the volcano we had a great tour with amazing panoramic views. Franklin knew exactly what he was doing and spoke excellent English. He made some great pictures and videos of us.
After that we went down the volcano! The gear was all in mint condition and he prepared us very good. He even runs down with you to get a great video of you.
After the boarding you grab some bites from some delicious fruits he brought and after that it's time to get back for your stop of in the city.
To summarize we had an excellent experience with Franklin and would definitely recommend his tours to anyone wanting a great time and a reliable guide that knows his deal!

This tour was fantastic! Well worth it. Franklin was the guide for my wife and I, he was very knowledgeable! They picked us up in a nice new roomy truck for our private tour to Cerro Negro. My wife and I are not avid hikers so it was nice that we went at our own pace taking scenic breaks along the way. We didn’t even have to carry up our boards up the volcano, which is awesome because I saw many other boarders carrying theirs, no thanks. Franklin took a lot of pictures and videos of us which in itself basically getting a private photographer/videographer was sweet! Super worth it right there! Memories for a lifetime. :) He airdropped us right away as well. The jumpsuit we wore was of a denim material so it made us feel very safe! It was a more protective that what others wore. It was high quality material. The only thing I recommend bringing with you up the volcano beside a bottle of water is a handkerchief to cover your mouth when sledding down. And then the sledding part WOW. Sooo fun! And it was all on film! Thank you so much for a wonderful time. Absolutely recommend!

We’re delighted to hear you and your wife had such a memorable experience with Franklin as your guide.
It’s great to know you enjoyed the personal touches, from the photography to the high-quality jumpsuits and the stress-free hike. We’re thrilled the sledding and the memories captured made it all the more special. We truly appreciate your recommendation and hope to see you again for another adventure!

My family (including two teens) were a bit wary after hearing I booked this as part of our tour of Nicaragua. They were quickly put at ease with meeting our guide Russell (through Va Pues Travel). He was incredibly informative and funny, taking his time to give us the history of the area around Cerro Negro. The hike up with breathtaking, but nowhere close to the exhilaration of heading down at crazy speeds (though you can control that yourself). It is a unique experience that you will take with you...in every orifice of your body, which you'll be digging out for days, but worth every little pebble!

Franklin organized my trip before I arrived. Sergio was my guide for the day. I was picked up early from the hotel. They had a local carry my board up to the top of the volcano at no additional cost to me. It was a hot hike up, but since I was a solo traveler, Sergio allowed me to go at my own pace. The trail that I boarded down was a little slow at first, with a couple of dips that I had to wiggle my way out of, but eventually it picked up quite a bit of speed. You essentially use your legs to help you stop or go faster. Hopefully you have enough core strength to stop yourself from tipping to the left or too far to the right. The views make the hike worked while. It was fun and exciting.

As someone who has travelled to over 90 countries now I have tried and tested various tours and day trips and i must say this was one of the best I have ever been on.
The organiser was very thorough explaining everything, he even went above and beyond his duty to take us to a separate tour straight after volcano boarding.
His photography and editing skills are what make this experience even more special.
More tour operators need to use this as a benchmark of how to operate fun and safe activities.

We loved our private volcano boarding experience. MAX and Franklin were superb guides who took great care with us to ensure we had a good experience. We are seasoned hikers and not part of the hostel/backpacker party crowd. They picked us up at our hotel in Leon at the time we requested, provided safe comfortable transportation with good conversation, all the necessary equipment (board, coveralls, goggles and gloves). If you have a scarf, buff or bandana that is helpful to keep ash/debris off your face. The hike up was not challenging and most of the elevation gain was in the first half. We clocked 750 ft elevation in 38 minutes, traveling a little over a mile, with several stops for photos. Instruction was thorough, and when I struggled to get my board up to speed Max arrived with advice and a push start. Fresh watermelon and a selection of cold beverages were provided for the ride back to town. The total time including transport, hike up, leisurely stroll around the crater, boarding, and return was about 3.5 hours. For those concerned this was not scary, you had to really make an effort to go too fast or fall off.private tour for 2, $100 less if more people.

Franklin was very knowledgeable about the history of the area. He took care of us from the moment we boarded our bus to go to Cerra Negro. He has done this long enough to know the best way to have a great experience, from hiring a local to carry our boards up the mountain (they make money, we have the freedom of not carrying boards) to making his own boards and denim jumpsuits for the ride down. He played inspiring music for our hike up, and took fabulous photos and put together a professional little video of our trip. We had a blast with him, and really appreciated his knowledge.

We had an amazing time, Cerro Negro is beautiful, the volcano and crater are amazing to view as you hike up. It was really windy the day we went which added a bit to the excitement / fear lol.
Our guides were super fun, knowledgeable of the area and gave us lots of cool info. We highly recommend the private tour, they pick you up directly at hotel and the schedule is a bit more flexible that way.
We won’t spoil the rest of the details on the descent, but it’s definitely a cool unique experience. Plan to get dusty! They supplied everything (goggles gloves and suit) we needed for protection except a face / neck covering or mask, but we researched ahead and brought some of our own. Definitely recommend grabbing something on Amazon for like $6 before you go!

Is there a minimum/maximum age limit? We have 10-year olds and 70+. Is there another way to get down the volcano other than boarding for those who may not be able to do it?
