It was a perfect day for whale watching. We took the morning tour and it was cloudy with the sun coming out later. One week prior to the scheduled trip I received a reminder email with lots of need-to-know information such as appropriate dress for weather conditions and more. Since the temperature was in the 70s I was well prepared with a sweatshirt and windbreaker which were absolutely needed once the boat got underway. It took about 40 minutes to get to our destination and we were not disappointed! We saw several whales feeding and a group of whales came close enough to swim underneath the boat. The boat crew was friendly, courteous, helpful, and knowledgeable. I learned some new things about whales and marine facts from the live onboard speaker narrative the crew provided throughout the trip. We spent at least an hour watching the whales and every moment was fascinating. The captain was conscientious about being respectful of the whale's space and avoiding stressing them. We didn't have any of the onboard food because we weren't hungry but the prices were not ridiculous. There was a variety of food options available. We did have tasty adult drinks and the cost was fair. Not one mention or shake of the bartender's tip jar was seen throughout the trip. An added benefit was that the boat had inside seating to get out of the wind and weather. It was a most enjoyable trip and experience. I would recommend it.

We picked a beautiful September day to do this tour. We reserved our spot. Got a reduced price from groupon. Forecasters were predicting higher winds and seas that day. They sell dramamine where you check in, $1 for two adult doses. We took them as did many others. We did not see any people get seasick that day. Boat was full. They were turning people away at the checkin, from the very beginning, so reserving a ticket is a good suggestion. It was rough, mostly heavy rolling on the return ride. The boat left the pier at one o'clock sharp You go about an hour out to the point where you can't see land...we saw a lot of whales, many breeching. Some fairly close to the boat, some far away. They spent about an hour or so searching for the whales. Guides were very good at telling us what to expect to see, and they announced the whales as they showed themselves. Return ride was another hour, we returned about five o'clock. The boat was comfortable for the length of ride, and handled the heavy seas very well. They offered food and drink on board. Highly recommend. Was a nice ride and seeing the whales was great.

It was a beautiful sunny summer day, one of the hottest on land but the best day to go whale whaling. We have been before in September of 2020 where we saw not only Humpback whales but also dolphins. On this trip, August 13th, 2021, the ocean was so calm, the sun was shinning, we could see out for miles. We encountered 11 whales in total, there were at times, 3 sleeping alongside each other. We learnt a lot of educational information about these whales as there were educators on whale narrating the trip. Such as when whales sleep, they float, called "logging" and they do not ever totally fall asleep, only half-asleep, staying half alert so they do not sink. It was amazing, the crew were so friendly and the captain was so conscious of both sides of the boat, so he kept turning at different angle so everybody get to have wonderful views of these gorgeous creatures!! A day well spent, 4 hours out on the water!! We would recommend this to those who wish to do whale watching!

First I must say thank you to the worker her helped with my daughter who threw up several times and helped clean up around her. You probably don't get paid enough to deal with people's puke. If you want to see whales, you will see them on this trip. Be prepared to be patient and spend some time getting to the location. The reason for only 3 stars is we would have booked with another whale watching cruise had we known that smoking was allowed on this vessel. Dogs apparently are allowed too. Pets- not just assisting dogs. I find it odd, but whatever.
In the middle of the ocean, we started to smell the stench of cigarette smoke and saw that a customer mid boat was smoking amongst the crowd of people. I pulled a worker aside and asked if that was allowed. She said they could smoke but were suppose to be doing it at the back of the boat only. Lovely, our seats we had found were at the back of the boat. She asked the man and wife to go smoke at the back which brought them now right in front of us. It was somewhat bearable when the boat was moving with the wind carrying off the smell, but when the boat stopped for viewings we would be amid the nasty smell of cigarette smoke. They should have signs posted in the back of the boat showing that it is the smoking section. We would have never picked our seats to be there if we had known that section was reserved for smokers. (the boat was too crowded to find new seats once we were midway in the trip) They should also say that smoking is only allowed while the boat is in motion. Once it stopped for viewings, everyone in the upper and lower decks had to suffer with the smokers. My daughter is ultra sensitive to cigarette smoke. It brings on migraines and makes her sick. She eventually had to go inside to the inner cabin to escape it. While inside she started to get sea sick which lead to several throw up sessions. Basically, the trip was a bust and no enjoyment was found for her due to the smokers. Why? Why is smoking allowed? We had taken a sunset cruise with a different company a few days before and they had a strict policy of no smoking and vaping which makes sense when you have a crowd of people cramped into a vessel.
Advice for Cape Ann Whale Watch - please advertise and let people know ahead of time that smoking is allowed at the back of the boat. Post signs showing where smoking is allowed. Also, place on your website information about parking. We had a hard time finding that inf

With that being said, as of today - July 20, 2021 - we no longer allow smoking on board and service animals will be the only animal allowed on board. We value and respect each and every customer, so I am hopeful you may have a better experience if you are able to join us again in the future. Kind regards, Capt. Jim Douglass Owner

We purchased our tickets through Groupon and went midweek on this whale watch. When we arrived, they were very well-organized. We were a little terrified of how many people they crammed on the boat UNTIL we realized there was PLENTY of room to spread out. Initially it felt like we were all crammed in with no ability to move around. The reality is that once the boat leaves the dock, there is plenty of room. It doesn't matter where you sit, because you will be able to view the whales from any seat. The captain did an amazing job of maneuvering the boat so everyone gets to view the whales. The trip out was interesting with a narrative of some of the scenery. The guide was fantastic explaining the different whale movements and pointing out their locations. It was a great day and I would highly recommend. You can bring your own food onboard, but no alcohol. On board, they sell food and beverages (including alcohol) for a very reasonable price. Great crew. Free Parking. Very well organized. Just a great day!

This was my first whale watching tour and it was great - we saw a mother and baby whale. The guides did a great job of talking about the whales, and the captain turned the boat so that people on both sides could see them. They recommend arriving an hour before the tour to check in and this is good advice - if you want the best selection of seats you should be towards the front of the line to board. I would definitely take another tour with this company.

We are two couples, sixtysomethings, who had been on whale watches before and had also been disappointed by the lack of... whales. Our Cape Ann experience, by contrast, was exhilarating. On our voyage to our appointed spot, the crew was so friendly and knowledgeable, and shared many interesting bits of information about whales. And when we arrived at our rendezvous with these incredibly beautiful mammals, it was like watching a mystical form of natural theater playing out just yards from our ship. Early on, people were shouting and laughing with excitement as we made our first sightings. Eventually, we spoke in hushed voices, or were in total silence observing these magnificent creatures. The weather was most cooperative, so visibility was excellent, only a slight roll of the ocean to rock us gently, and the warmth of the sun was quite bearable. We took lots of video and gladly because we couldn't quite believe our eyes.

As part of an Army Reunion, I arranged a Whale watch tour for 15 members of our group. Booking over the phone was easy. As instructed we showed up early to purchase tickets. It was great that I was able to make the reservation for 15 but each individual/couple was able to pay separately. The ship is very large and comfortable. We sat downstairs. The crew are super friendly and helpful. One of our members was on a scooter thing after having foot surgery. She was able to maneuver with some help. The Crew does explain that you are not GAURANTEED to see whales so enjoy the journey. We were fortunate that we saw five different whale groups!! We enjoyed the Educators who walked the boat teaching about Sea Life. Very well done and interesting. We all had a great time and would highly recommend. I would not recommend for young kids because it is a lot of waiting. 6-7 up should have no problem but you know your kid best. The only negative was caused by people on the tour. This is a large Galley with about ten booths . Some groups dropped their belongings on tables making them unusable for others. Many announcements were made telling people not to do this but you know how selfish and entitled some people are!! The food in the Galley is reasonably priced. A Great day on the water

I've lived here in Gloucester for close to 20 years now. I used to live in too many parts of Boston to remember. I grew up to 15 in the suburbs of Sharon, to boot. We lived about 45 minutes to the Atlantic Ocean. I have no idea why, but we had an atrociously beautful "Whaling Museum" that I used to go to class fields trips to when I was young.

I saw at least one closely (if not fully) complete whale skeleton hung in the air above our heads. I remember feeling sadness and pity, though I would not know how to label 'pity' at that age. Then all of the students would be hustled into the room where the massive scrimshaw display was located. jeepers, I didn't know what to think.

Google scrimshaw if you don't know what it is.

To summarize Cape Ann Whale Watch: I've been on approximately 40-50 whale watches in my life, many with Cape Ann Whale Watch. I would never pick another company or another crew. They are very professional and safe. I think I've been out with them 10 times and we only had to come back early once because of dangerous weather conditions.

You get more time with the whales and a "sight seeing" guarantee. You can't beat that!

P.S. In all the years that I've gone, I've only seen Humpbacks. I have no idea why. But I'll keep hopping on the Hurricane II at least once a year every year until life pulls me to a different stretch of the New England Coast. I'm thinking Portland, ME?

Wow, what a day out on the water!!!! I was brought to tears seeing these magnificent animals in their natural habitat. This has been on my bucket list for over 10 years; ever since I became certified to scuba dive. I didn't know what to expect. I was hoping to see a few whale tales and perhaps a breach. What we got was SO MUCH MORE!!!
The crew did a fantastic job. They went around several times with items for us to learn about the whales we were about to see. They asked several times if we had any questions. The concession stand had a nice variety of both hot and cold items. They were very informative during the watch to explain to everyone what we were seeing. The excitement of Jennifer was apparent in her voice and you can tell every crew member absolutely loves what they do!
It does get cold on the water, so expect weather 20 degrees colder than on land. This is on their website, so read their site.
I took my two teenagers on this trip with me and they were impressed. You know if teens are happy, it is a good experience! I can't wait to get the photo package from our trip. We hit the lottery for whale watching trips. I HIGHLY recommend using this service.
