About the operator

- allenf5460 contributionsA Schooner experienceIt was a positive experience. The captain and crew are knowledgable and interesed in sharing ship lore and info about sailboats and history of the town. Since the captain needed to steer the schooner it would help if he had a microphone as it was difficult to always hear due to the wind. It was chilly so the crew provided blankets if needed. The captain and mates are friendly and engaged passengers in conversation.Written September 22, 2024

- R5937IFstephenb0 contributionsAmazing boat ride.Boat was amazing. I was able to assist hoisting up the sail. Captain let me steer the boat, thankfully I did not stall out with his help. Drinks were good and we were blessed with perfect weather for sailing. Sadly one of deck hands become aggressive towards me and commented on my T-shirt which I proudly wore representing my grandmothers Jewish heritage. I still highly recommend this boat ride. Thank you captain and most of the crew for a wonderful afternoon on the water. Grateful.Written September 18, 2024
- 541wgk0 contributionsGreat day on the Appledore II !!!We went on the Appledore II. The crew was great and includes us in hoisting the sails. The weather was perfect and the wind was enough to not need the engine. While out on Penobscot Bay the crew showed us points of interest and tpold us of the hiostorey of the few remaining schooners on the east coast. A really great time! I'd recommend to anyone!Written September 17, 2024
- kathrynbH8305GY0 contributionsMainers doing tourist thingsHad a great time! We were quite a mixed group age ranging from 9 to 60. The crew were knowledgeable and gentle, and fantastic at teaching the 9 y/o to steer. And they really do have the best Bloody Marys in the areaWritten September 16, 2024
- weavertj0 contributionsWhat a Grand Sailing Experience!I am sorry that it took me a long time to get this review posted! Took the 2 hour Appledore sailboat trip out of Camden ME, on spur of the moment! What a grand sail it was! Crew was friendly and efficient! Views were wonderful! If you find yourself considering a sailing tour out of Camden Harbor, this is an excellent choice. I would like to repeat this experience again if ever in this location again! Thank you!Written September 14, 2024

- JoyceK1120 contributionsGreat SailMy husband and I enjoyed a great trip on the Appledore. Captain Zach & his crew were very accommodating. Seniors and young families had an easy time onboard. My husband was an avid sailor until his boat was retired; Zach let him have the wheel to enjoy sailing the boat for a time. It was great that the breeze was sufficient to cut the motor after getting out of the harbor. This is really a sailing vessel!Written August 29, 2024
- 896adriennef0 contributionsDisappointed By My Appledore Day Sail/ CamdenCaptain Pablo was very nice and he provided a handful of interesting facts about the area. (No microphone, though, so he was difficult to hear over all the talking by passengers. However, I’ve been on 2 other schooner trips (out of Portland), and they were both much better/ more exciting. This trip with Captain Pablo was extremely slow… and boring to be honest. Maybe it was a lack of wind (???), or maybe our tedious pace was intentional… I don’t know, but it was not enjoyable and definitely not worth the price.Written August 28, 2024

This is the best sunset sail excursion out of Camden ME. The crew is more than friendly and the bot is a classic designed schooner. The wind happened to be blowing beautifully for the sunset cruise and the sailing was superb as sailed by our Captain. This was our 3rd sail in Camden and when we were in Key West, it was there waiting for another beautiful tropical sunset cruise.

This was a perfect way to spend the evening in Camden. The views of the harbor and Penobscot Bay at sunset were spectacular. The crew was amazing and it was evident that they thoroughly enjoyed sailing; you could tell it was a passion and just not another job. They were very attentive to customer needs and questions, and they made the experience tremendous fun. It was one of the highlights of our summer trip.

What a fantastic experience! Don't hesitate to book this. A full two hour cruise with the nicest crew imaginable. Our cruise was out of Camden, Maine. Unfortunately it was cloudy so the sunset bit didn't really happen, but it didn't detract from the joy of sailing and being with wonderful people and feeling the sea breeze on your face. The raising and lowering of the sails was really fascinating and our skipper, Gus, did a fantastic job telling us all the safety stuff before we left. I really liked that he didn't give a running commentary the whole time and just let you be in the moment or chat with other guests. The crew was very willing to answer questions if you had them. They were also extremely polite and attentive in getting you any drinks you required. The drinks were not overpriced which was nice. It got chilly the further out we went, so bring a warm layer or a wind breaker to wear. They did provide fleece blankets which was a nice touch. All in all, I would definitely do this again. Oh, use the bathroom before you leave unless you're OK with going down a steep ladder backwards to use the one below deck....

We had a beautiful evening aboard the Schooner Appledore and Captain Shawn and crew (Mackenzie, Andy, and young Shepherd) were excellent. Beer, wine, and cocktails were available immediately and throughout our sail, and our crew was very informative and friendly. We highly recommend adding this to your midcoast travel itinerary! Book a dinner reservation before heading out, as restaurants tend to be full by the time you disembark.

** My original review went under the Key West location** We did TJ Camden Maine Sunset Sail.
The water was absolutely calm, warm summer wind on our faces, drinks (wine in hand) and we chased the sunset. The crew Colleen, Phoebe and Captain Gus were awesome 😎 Exceptional service, personable, funny and knowledgeable with willingness to share. Booking online is available however we called. The crew are ensuring staff and guest safety during these uncertain times but still making the experience enjoyable. Once out of the Chanel we were sailing 💕⛵️ We saw seals, loons, ducks, Egrits and Cormorants. Truly an amazing experience. Too short I could could sail all day around Penobscot Bay! It was breathtaking to see the Maines majestic coastline from the water. Being a Mainer I can’t believe it’s only taken 30 years to do this! We will surely be back to sail on your beautiful vessel. ***ladies dresses fly up, perhaps bring a light coat. Thank you 😊

What an incredible way to enjoy the delights of Camden's harbor at magic hour, and what a peaceful way to cruise beyond the noise and hubbub of the mainland - even if only for 2 incredible hours aboard the meticulously manned Schooner Appledore. The crew are charismatic, helpful, entertaining and entirely adept at manning their craft while answering questions, filling drinks and elevating the experience to be so much more than a typical sunset cruise. This was without a doubt the highlight of our time spent in Camden. Congrat's to Gus and the crew.

We had an amazing time on the Schooner Appledore II Sunset Sail on 6/20/23! The day had been cloudy, but just as we were boarding the clouds dispersed and we got to see the sun set. The crew took great care of us getting us our drinks and blankets for those requesting them. We were able to ask a lot of questions and were shared the history of the Appledore II and of that area. We saw a porpoise, loon, and many seals on our outing. The lighthouse was a beautiful view lit up for the night. We were so glad we went after docking, as it was a fun and memorable time! We highly recommend Schooner Appledore II Cruises. Great job Schooner Appledore II crew, we had an amazing and fun time with you!

This was our first adventure in Maine, and it did not disappoint. Camden is a beautiful harbor town. The Windjammer Classic Sunset Sail was the perfect end to a wonderful day. The crew of the Schooner Appledore II was friendly, attentive, and fun. While the weather did not cooperate with a "sunset" view, we completely enjoyed the sail and would highly recommend this experience.

Lovely experience, especially for one (me!) who loves sailboats. This beauty (Appledore II) was built in Maine by a craftsman/sailor. She sailed straight and true, without anyone at the helm! Plenty of room on board, powerful drinks mixed right on board. Lots of good explanations from our Captain about how the sails work to drive the boat forward. The crew did everyhting they could to make our voyage enjoyable. Several children on board, they loved it. One girl, aged about 11, when she was steering Appledore back to harbor, was asked by our Captain ‘what would you like to do now” she replied ‘turn around and sail forever’. That pretty much sums it up. We waited until there was a forecast for sun and partial cloud, and we were rewarded with a magnificent sunset. A great adventure, highly recommended.

I get seasick in rough waters. Most of the whale watching tours say to avoid if you get seasick. I love a calm water sunset cruise. How is the motion on the sunset cruises?
Written May 2, 2019
That depends on your child. Our kids (6 & 8 at the time) were able to hoist the sails and assist the captain. It's good to do if you want an activity to calm down with during the evening.
