About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- CarrieD19790 contributionsFun Morning TourThe Bridges of Madison County were a fun way to spend a morning. The staff at the Chamber office were really helpful and provided a map and a plan for us to follow—definitely make this your first stop. They also had lots of cute items for sale in their gift shop. We only had about two hours and we were able to get to five of the six bridges taking the route that the Chamber staff worked out for us. The map was clear and the route had a lot of signs, so it was easy to follow.Written October 9, 2023
- John J0 contributionsGood place to start learning about the area.Stopped in to get more information about attractions and places to visit in Madison County. Friendly folks willing to share all they know and believe. Suggested they learn about and inform others about the geocaching opportunities in the areaWritten July 19, 2023
- ReadRibbet0 contributionsGood First Stop in Madison CountyThis is a good first stop if you are going to spend some time in the Madison County area. It is easily accessible on the downtown square with limited free street parking. The center has a number of brochures to help you visit the area including a map of the Madison County bridges. It is also a gift shop which included quilted potholders, Xmas ornaments, wines, postcards, books and other local items. The staff was especially friendly and helpful. There are also clean public bathrooms. There are other stops on the square including the Iowa Quilting Museum and the Welcome to Winterset Postcard mural.Written July 18, 2023
- N611VMandread0 contributionsVery HelpfulIf you need ideas about what to do in Madison County, their Chamber of Commerce (conveniently located in their village square) is a great place to go. The workers there are extremely friendly and give very good advise.Written November 11, 2021
- Janeen W0 contributionsThank YouThank you to the Madison County Chamber of Commerce for providing a place to find a wealth of information about what to do in Winterset, Iowa! Restrooms and souvenirs are also available at this easy to find location.Written August 4, 2021
- Voyager10414787070 contributionsMadison County Court HouseLocated in the Winterset downtown square, the Court House is in the center of town. This is a quaint, historic town, the birthplace of John Wayne. The grounds were well groomed. One could tell there is pride in ownership.Written July 10, 2020
- Ruth494170 contributionsInformed, helpful, and super friendly staff.I went in to the visitor center as soon as I got to town, and quickly realized there was a LOT more to Winterset than I though. There was great informative literature and more to do than I had vacation time for. The associate I spoke with knew so much history and facts about Winterset, Madison County, Des Moines, and Iowa that I wish I had a tape recorder so I could retain all the fascinating information.Written July 2, 2020
- brumba500 contributionsGreat Quick Auto TripI just visited all six covered bridges and found them wonderful. I enjoyed being able to visit at my own pace and in my own car. The Chamber of Commerce website has a great map and together with the on line detail by bridge, you get some good information. I went at the end of COVID-19 so there were no crowds of course, but expect it to be busy during peak summer or fall periods. Allow some time to browse in Winterset also. John Wayne’s childhood home is located there, and it has been beautifully restored. It also attracts crowds. The downtown area is very walkable and worth some time.Written May 8, 2020
- Teresa G0 contributionsHelpful! The Bridges of Madison County are Awesome! The welcome center is located in 1 of the historic buildings on the square in Winterset. They carry a very nice assortment of high-quality gift items, such as hand-crafted cutting boards, hotpads, etc, all at very reasonable prices. The staff was very helpful in supplying us with a map which directed us to the covered bridges in the area (those bridges are a MUST SEE if you're anywhere near this area!). We visited the little bakery (also located in 1 of the historic buildings on the square) & had some nice treats there while visiting with the couple who own it. We also visited a few of the shops on the square, including Ben Franklin. We drove up to a stone structure (they can direct you at the welcome center) that basically went through the forest (very pretty). Winterset is the birthplace of John Wayne, so there is a John Wayne museum there, as well as the house that he grew up in. Some of the covered bridges were featured in "The Bridges of Madison County" & they are amazing! We also visited the Covered Bridge Winery, which is just outside Winterset...very good wine!Written November 6, 2019
- I4231XIrichardh0 contributionsGood info--Great tourWe took the bridges tour and Phyllis was our guide. The tour was outstanding. Phyllis gave us a lot of information and made our tour a great experience.Written October 11, 2019
- Rowland450 contributionsBest place to beginThis place is very good for finding out what is where and the general history of things in Madison county. The lady in charge is an encyclopedia of information. She also knows every line in the movie as it plays non stop in the shop. Reasonable prices on good quality gifts. Very clean restrooms also.Written September 11, 2019
- lmcdonald320 contributionsGreat information!Stopped by to gather some information while in Madison County. The lady behind the desk was so helpful and informative. Really helped me plan my brief stay, which was only going to include the bridges. Highly recommend a stop here as it is right in town.Written July 23, 2019
- ARCH410 contributionsGood Visitor CenterThis center has a variety of mementos related to the bridges and some of the other attractions. It is worth a visit.Written June 11, 2019

My wife and I spent the weekend in the Winterset area in April. Left Omaha on a Saturday morning and ate lunch at The Drift in Winterset. Very nice taproom with craft beers, wine and food. Service and lunch was excellent. Drove part of the Covered Bridges Scenic Byway and visited 3 of the 6 covered bridges. Iowa does a good job with signage so we could find the bridges. Great history here and the bridges are very unique and well cared for. Late afternoon we drove to Perry, Iowa to check into the Hotel Pattee. Built in 1913, this historic hotel is absolutely beautiful and decorated in 1913 vintage. Rooms have different themes. We stayed in the Tuba room which was very nicely decorated and had all of the amenities we needed. The Pattee Cafe had excellent evening dinner choices and a brunch on Sunday morning. After breakfast on Sunday, we ventured back to Winterset and drove the byway to see the other 3 bridges, stopped in at a couple of wineries and visited the John Wayne BIrthplace Museum. Nice museum with a short movie on his life, artifacts and a short walk outside brought you to the house he was born in. Overall, we would recommend visiting this nice museum. Stopped at the Covered Bridges Winery, had some snacks and great wine while listening to the live music. Returned to Perry that evening and tried their local Mexican restaurant on Main Street. Food was excellent and we would recommend it to all. Headed home Monday morning. Our weekend was fun and laid back. Great stress reliever. Only suggestion would be to travel the Byway in the fall as we can imagine the fall colors in this area would be beautiful.

And then we received the finest of guides in that of Bob! What about Bob? Everything about Bob was great. He was informative, interesting, inspiring and completely knowledgeable about all the places he took us. Highest ratings for Bob! He could make a dead horse interesting! Highest ratings for the tour. We loved our tour with Bob as our guide. He gave us so much information on the history of the city of Winterset and the bridges. We would have gotten lost getting to the Roseman Bridge if we hadn't of had Bob with us. Bob also gave us some detailed tidbits about the filming of the movie "Bridges of Madison County" that were so interesting. I highly recommend doing this personal tour!

Guide's knowledge of town history was given with humor & fact...no unnecessary embellishments. We enjoyed every minute with her! My Mother's family from area back to early 1800s...I was born & raised in Iowa + I do geneology & some photo documentation. The day brought me back to my childhood! Job well done!

This tour is offered by the Winterset Chamber of Commerce and is absolutely amazing. The guide got into our car and took us to 3 of the bridges and other important and fun sites in and around Winterset. She was very knowledgable about the history and was lots of fun! I have been to Winterset before, and tried to find some bridges on my own. This tour is a far better way to see them.

This was the best little tour. I picked up my guide, Phyllis, at the chamber. I drove, she gave directions, and told me all about the sites around and the covered Bridges of Madison County as well as what was filmed for the movie. It was great! Winterset is the cutest town.

After passing by a few times on our way to Kansas City, made the time to do veer off the I35 and overnight in Winterset. We are fans of local tours be they walking, or in this case, driving. Diane was wonderful - knowledgeable, engaging and proud of her community. We could have seen the same sights, but not with the same eyes of being with someone who can provide "value added" insight. Next time we decide to "veer' we may need to take in the wineries in the area. But maybe let someone else do the driving on the tour.

Our guide had an incredible store of Madison County stories, movie stories and history of Madison County. We saw numerous parks, beautiful towers and tunnels and two covered bridges. We would’ve enjoyed more covered bridges. FYI - a lot of gravel roads and narrow roads.

Hello Betsy, so glad you enjoyed your tour and all the information the tour guide had to offer. Since most of our bridges are still in their original location, gravel roads are part of the country charm.
