Sushi making with a knowledgeable and witty instructor
My husband and I love Japanese food so I was looking for a Sushi making class for Valentine's Day. And I'm so glad I found Mori and Katsumi's Teaching Kitchen online because it truly was a wonderful experience. Mori is absolutely hilarious and had us laughing the entire evening. She also shared with us her wealth of knowledge and we learned so much about Japanese cuisine and culture. The food we learned to make was delicious - the type of rice and method of preparation really makes a difference in the taste and texture of sushi. We especially liked learning how to make spring rolls with peanut sauce - it was surprisingly easy! This weekend we plan to visit the Japanese mart in Castleton to buy items to make our own sushi at home. Thank you Mori for the guidance and an exciting evening of Japanese cooking!

      Intro to Sushi Class
My husband and I decided to try the Intro to Sushi class just for fun. Mori was delightful - so knowledgeable, practical, and full of stories from her unique life experience. We felt right at home and learned so much! We look forward to applying what we learned at home and going back for more classes!

      GREAT Teaching Experience
This was a great experience in learning how to make sushi, spring rolls and miso soup. The food we made was also very good to eat. Our teacher was wonderful! She held our interest, freely gave us hints, background information and was overall fun to listen. She readily gave us tidbits on Japanese culture, what equipment was best to buy and how to make the most of what we purchased (such as making a rice cooker cake in the rice cooker). We highly recommend this for learning, entertainment and a great way to spend a few hours!!!

      Great Experience
My wife and I took the Intro class (sushi, spring rolls, miso soup, and Japanese rice cooker cake). We had a great experience. Below are a few notes: ~ The class is not in a 5 star kitchen and looks a little sketchy from the outside, but do not let that deter you. ~ Mori (the instructor) was very knowledgeable and took the time to show us exactly which ingredients she used so we could take pictures on our phones. If you live in the area, she can tell you where to shop for the type of ingredients you will need. She also gave us recipes and I feel extremely confident that I could repeat everything we did in the class. Mori also works in history and cultural anecdotes that add more than just a culinary lesson. ~ The quality of the food is fantastic. The food I was able to make in this class was at least as good as anything I have had in a restaurant. I’m not a chef by any means, but I think I did a good job. ~ We were here in December, and it was a little cold in the building. It may just be the heat was low or the walls are drafty, but you may want a sweater. ~ I suggest eating a small meal before the class. There is a lot of prep work before you will eat, so if you go in for a noon class, it will likely be 1:30 before you start tasting the fruits of your labor. Additionally, you aren’t making a feast; this is an intro class. If you have a big appetite like I do, this will be somewhere between a snack and a small meal. Bottom Line: You should try this class at least once. We had a great time and feel like we could replicate it with relative ease.

      Great time
My friend and I did the beginner sushi class and had a GREAT time making spring rolls and sushi! Mori is so entertaining to listen to. I enjoyed the history she gave as she explained things from the Japanese culture. It helps give a understanding as to why amazing flavor is worth the extra cost. I don’t know if I will be able to eat sushi without being a bit of a food snob from now on. ;) Spring rolls might be a new staple for quick dinners at my house. We will definitely be taking more of her classes.

I bought this class for my wife’s birthday, and she LOVED it! We travel a lot and do a lot of things when we go to different cities. We found this class by searching for things to do in Indianapolis as if we were visiting. On our particular visit, we were the only ones in the class, so we got to hang out with Mori the whole time. She told us lots of stories about her life, starting the class, and fought us many things about Japan while we cooked. It felt like spending time with a long lost family member. We would highly recommend this class.

Mori taught us how to hold chopsticks and the intricacies of Japanese etiquette while we enjoyed preparing and eating a ramen appetizer followed by preparing and eating a curry stew with rice. It was all new to me and absolutely delicious. We followed up the appetizer and main dish with cake she prepared in a rice cooker.

I think the trick to making this a wonderful experience is booking with a fun group.

Learned new cooking techniques along with proper etiquette when using chopsticks. The food was tasty. Now we have suggestions for brands and types of food to look for at the specialty grocery store.
