- 1In 1889 Wright completed the construction of a small two-story residence in Oak Park on the Western edges of Chicago. The building was the first over which Wright exerted complete artistic control. Designed as a home for his family, the Oak Park residence was a site of experimentation for the young architect during the twenty-year period he lived there. Wright revised the design of the building multiple times, continually refining ideas that would shape his work for decades to come.

- joaniemaria0 contributionsInteresting home and studioWe toured the home and studio and also the gift shop behind the studio. It is beautiful and refurbished to the time when the family lived there before moving to Wisconsin. If you like Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs, you will enjoy seeing this home and studio. The windows, design, and light in the home are delightful. Go and see it. Tour guides are friendly and knowledgeable.Written May 19, 2024
- Gidons510 contributionsGreat architecture of one of the most famous American architects in the first half of the 20 century. We just visited the beautiful gift shop of the house , which by itself is a masterpiece of architecture. Take an hour walk through this beautiful neighborhood, where many of his works can be identified.Written May 8, 2023
- nashtonA10 contributionsA wonderful tourA great example of his work. The tour was excellent and you can take as many pictures as you would like to, unlike other FLW homes.Written May 2, 2023

- Deborah L0 contributionsA Glimpse into the Start of It all!We loved getting a glimpse into where it all began for Frank Lloyd Wright. The alterations and additions showcase FLW’ s progression. While you are there walk around the neighborhood to see other homes by FLW.Written October 4, 2022
- Gilleny0 contributionsGreat Intro to FLW!They've done a great job of restoring the house and studio. Felt like we stepped back in history. This made us aware of Frank Lloyd Wright's influence throughout our visit in Chicago. Suggest you allow hour before tour for Uber if you are traveling from downtown. Suggest you reserve an Uber for return to downtown as there aren't a lot of drivers in the area.Written August 28, 2022
- Rose M0 contributionsAMAZING VISIONWhat an introduction to the genius of the man. One can see his vision and beginning by touring this home in which he lived, albeit for a short period of time. It is very important to take a tour as there is much to learn.Written August 10, 2021
- kleic0 contributionsIf you like Frank Lloyd WrightMy cousin and I recently did a tour of both the house/studio and the neighborhood. While we had to duck out of the neighborhood tour because it went on much longer than we expected and it was really hot outside, we learned a ton and saw some really spectacular buildings. I do wish the docent were as interested in questions as he was in getting through his material but I will say he had a lot to offer in the way of background knowledge. One thing I thought was interesting (as someone who had never been to a Frank Lloyd Wright house before and really only knew the name and the basic style) was how pretty much everyone else on our tour was REALLY into either architecture or Wright or both. Not for kids and definitely not for anyone who has trouble standing but quite interesting. One caution: don't just show up! Make reservations early and on line. Great gift shop.Written June 25, 2021
- FUL-QWVR0 contributionsAnother must see for Frank Lloyd Wright enthusiastsFrank Lloyd Wright’s home and studio tour were well worth the investment. Our tour guide was pleasant and knowledgeable. Being able to see some of the original or reproduction furniture was a real plus to be able to envision the buildings as they were in 1909. The staff in the store were charming and helpful. Great tour.Written May 8, 2021

- DERtravels0 contributionsInsight to Famed ArchitectWhile visiting family in the Chicago area, we took an afternoon to visit the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio. The guided tour is very thorough, giving insight to the life and personality of Frank Lloyd. You can see how nature played into his style from the beginning and the subsequent moving into geometric patterns. All a part of the man who hated clutter. By the end of the tour, you are sure to want to walk and drive by the many other homes and buildings in Oak Park designed by Wright. There is a well-stocked gift shop which offers Wright Style merchandise and many books on his life and his architecture. Well worth more than half a day.Written May 26, 2020
- debbieaY1939IB0 contributionsHighly recommendedYou don't need to be an avid fan of Frank Lloyd Wright to enjoy this tour. My knowledge of him was probably rudimentary, and weighted heavily toward knowledge of his prairie style architecture. His home and studio in Oak Park give you a look into his family and early career. Tours are limited to 12 people, so there is ample opportunity to ask questions and learn from the tour guide. It was fascinating to see how his style evolved, just during the time he lived in this home, and added on to it. The volunteer who led our tour made the stories of how he interacted with his clients come alive. You could just imagine Frank Lloyd Wright treating his clients in this way. After the tour we enjoyed a lovely walk around the neighborhood, finding the three other houses he designed. It was also an easy walk to downtown Oak Park for lunch. There is a small gift shop with a wide variety of Wright-related items.Written March 3, 2020
- 1blah10 contributionsA House of HistoryTraveling through the house, each room showed FLW’s developing style in Prairie Architecture. This tour was so fascinating, I had seen Falling Water several years ago and to see how he developed to that home was amazing. Don’t miss the homes he designed through Oak Park and also LaGrange, Illinois.Written January 16, 2020
- Johnsculptor0 contributionsVery interesting visitWe were shown around the house and studio by another fantastically knowledgeable and passionate volunteer. The house is perfect for the hour long tour. With original fixtures and furniture it is a great place to see the origins of Wright’s practice along with his original office and draughting room for his expanded practice in Chicago We took a taxi there which was a long ride but in fact the train is less than ten minutes walk from the house and studio. If you have only heard the name and are interested or know a lot about the subject you will love the tour and house as well as seeing many other examples in the neighbourhoodWritten January 9, 2020

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much. I didn't know very much about Frank Lloyd Wright, but I love touring homes and my husband suggested, so I thought why not? This did not disappoint! The home was beautiful and each room was so thoughtfully done. I kept having to remind me myself that it was all done more than 100 years ago!
We arrived 30 minutes after our timed ticket (due to Chicago traffic and our uber driver who more interested in talking instead of following the gps). Luckily, the next tour group wasn't full so we were able to hop in with them. Anne was our tour guide and she was absolutely phenomenal. She answered all of the questions and incredibly knowledgeable about FLW. You can tell she has a passion for his work and we felt that the entire time. We ended up doing the self-guided walking tour as well. We were given handheld devices and a map. The house were easy to find since they were all on the same street.
We had a such a great time and worth the trip! Thank you Anne, Darryl & Michelle!
I'd like to note that it did take a while to get an uber after the tour (about 30 mins wait), since it's not in a popular area. So keep that in mind if that's how you get there.

I was fortunate enough to have a tour with only 2 other persons at the FLW Home and Studio. Our tourguide was extremely knowledgeable and super friendly (like the lady in the gift store). The metro ride from Downtown Chicago was very doable, despite the cold wind. I could not recommend this tour enough; it is a true addition to your sentiments, if you have an admiration for (the works of) this architect.
I am not adding any pictures; please go see for your self as the pictures will do no justice to what you can see (and hear) in reality.

This was a highlight of our trip!! It was an excellent tour. The guide and the entire staff were kind, friendly, and knowledgeable. The history and architecture were presented to allow everyone on the tour to gain more understanding of his amazing talent. The neighborhood and walking tour were amazing also. They also took the time to speak with you as an individual. Definitely make this a destination. IF you take the train from the airport use the center transfer station and switch trains to get closer to the area. Oh and eat local, the restaurants and cafes were great!

This is an opportunity to see Wright's first home and studio (from 1889-1909). The historic district surrounding his home and studio has the greatest number of Wright-designed homes anywhere in the world. That being said, I would recommend doing the Inside and Out tour which costs $30/adult. Self-guided audio neighborhood tour consists of 10 different homes. Tours run from 10 AM through 4 PM. Free parking on the streets around the home. We arrived early and did neighborhood tour in less than 1 hour.

Educational, interesting and enjoyable are the best ways to describe this attraction. About 7 years ago we went to Barcelona and really dove into Guadi, so here in Chicago, it seemed appropriate to see the inspiration and work of Frank Lloyd Wright. Let me say I am not the biggest fan of Prairie School, but I am more impressed by it after this visit. I will say one thing, I do love that FLW chose to pursue an American design as opposed to copying European designs.
As for the attraction, it is really good because you see the inspiration and evolution of the design and because the guides are very knowledgeable and very good about relating the information to guest. The original house was not really a Prairie design. He did go back an add features but it is the expansion portions of the house that really show the evolution of the design and the incorporation of new technology.
Two of the things I loved were the way FLW dealt with space and windows. You see his signature of creating an intimate space within a larger space. Also you other ways space is used like the master bathroom where a small recess area becomes a 3-D picture. The second aspect is the way FLW uses light in windows and the geometrical patterns in the windows he became famous for. The house is really neat including the enclosed foyer that included a tree. However, my favorite part may have been the office as it incorporated the full FLW style including the geometric use of light.
As I write, I realize that I really like the interior; it is the exterior where you can't find the front door that is the part I least like. With that said this really is a great visit if you are in Chicago. Also buy the map and walk a couple of blocks to see so many of his designs. Again very interesting and enjoyable and you will learn a lot.

Fans of the uniquely American architect FLW will certainly enjoy this tour. Alex, our guide, was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Be sure to walk the neighborhood, with its many examples of FLW homes, and make your way to Unity Temple, another great example of his work. Oak Park is easily accessible by subway, a 30 minute ride from downtown Chicago. Many Europeans here the day I visited, tours on tape are available in several languages.

Wonderful docent gave us a tour of the house and grounds. She explained the limits of the house FLW originally built and then explained the additions, including his own working shop when became self-employed. Wright designed everything with a reason in mind and since this was his living quarters from 1889-1909 you get a good idea of how he wanted use living space. Much of the furniture is of his own design. His wide windows are everywhere. He hid a baby grand piano in the kids playroom. Even the radiators were hard to detect. If you like architecture and American history this is worth the time and money.

The studio tour might be better than my rating, but we had some difficulty driving there and were 15 minutes late for our purchased tour. We requested to be moved to the next tour, which we saw only had 6-7 people in it (we saw them touring the house) but they refused to allow us, saying we would have to pay again. They took us to meet the group, we missed the first 15 minutes, which is most of the downstairs home.
The rest of the tour was ok, but our guide was also just ok, not adding much and not answering all questions.
The self-guided tour of the other houses in Oak Park is definitely not worth the price, the paper guide is not useful, and we ended up using a couple of different online guides, it only took us a minute to find something better in Google.
The two stars belong to Frank Lloyd Wright, not to the organization.

Absolutely fantastic!! I thought I knew about FLW but learned so much! Toured this as well as the temple which was in walking distance and seeing all three was a rich experience. The 3D submersion into his “art work” was beyond compare and far exceeded a photographic image. It’s a “must do” for sure!! (Walking the neighborhood right around the house on Forest St really added to the trip as well) Loved Molly for a guide! Seek her out!

We've visited several Frank Lloyd Wright homes ranging from Falling Water (Pennsylvania) and Darwin Martin and Graycliff (Buffalo) to Taliesen West (Scottsdale) to Usonian homes in northern Ohio. If you have any interest or curiosity in Frank Lloyd Wright or architecture, you definitely want to come here and to give yourself some additional time to see other nearby FLW structures.
This is Frank Lloyd Wright's family home, which he designed and expanded. It was fun to see how he himself lived and to hear stories of him as a father.
You'll want to book ahead online as a tour is required. The docents are excellent.
The studio itself alone is worth the cost of admission. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to photograph (not because of any rules, but rather it's not configured in a way that gives you the kind of picture you might want). Just seeing it makes you want to work there. Having said that, several of the rooms of the house are quite appealing in their own right, with all kinds of clever touches.
As noted above, there are several other Frank Lloyd homes just around the corner. While they are not open to the public, you can easily see the exteriors and it is an elegant neighborhood that is pleasant to walk around. There is a self-guided walking tour, but you can also find maps online. The Unity Temple, designed by Wright, is also a short drive away.
This is a unique and uniquely American site that anyone with even a passing interest in Frank Lloyd Wright should see.
