About
The Northern Circuit route is one of the best routes on Kilimanjaro, offering nearly 360 degrees of beautiful scenery including the quiet, rarely visited northern slopes. As the longest route on Kilimanjaro, the Northern Circuit allows for the best acclimatization time and the highest summit success rate, therefore this route is highly recommended. The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west, beginning with a long drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate. From there, the first two days are spent trekking through the rainforest to Shira Ridge, before crossing the Shira Plateau. The route then heads north and circles clockwise from Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp to School Hut, before summiting from the east. Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met and transferred for overnight accommodation at Kilimanjaro Wonders Hotel 4stars B&B. Your head guide will meet you for your briefing, gear check and arrange for you to hire any equipment you may need.

Trek 2 Kili was AMAZING! We did the 9 day Northern Circuit in January as a private trek. The team, the route, the whole experience was PERFECT! First, the owner Iza was so responsive and helpful as we planned our trip which was very important given the current travel environment. He gave us 100% confidence that we would have an amazing experience in Tanzania and he was right! Trek 2 Kili is a locally owned company which was really important to us AND they are a member of KPAP which is a great organization that ensures proper treatment and wages for the mountain crews! (there are teams that only get one meal a day out there on the mountain so be careful who you book with)...

Then there is the 12 man team we had on the mountain. Our lead guide Nelson was the BEST! If you book with Trek 2 Kili (which you should right now) ask for Nelson as your guide! He has successfully been to the top over 100 times and we would not have made it to the top without him and the whole team! Nelson and our assistant guide Isaya were such a great team and kept us positive and in great spirits on the full trek! Our Chef Edward (who already has a reputation here on Tripadvisor) exceeded our very high expectations for delicious food on the mountain and I would say the team effort of Edward and our waiter Chaz was like having a 5 star restaurant experience at every meal. Chaz took care of us at all times while we were at camp, and went above and beyond at all opportunities.

Then there is the route we selected. We were fortunate to have the time to do the 9 day Northern Circuit and we are so glad we chose this route. Not only did it give us the best chance at summiting the mountain, we got 360 degree views of the mountain. In fact most brochures use images from the Kenya side and the Northern Circuit is the ONLY route that gives you those views of the broad northern face of the mountain with the Northern Ice Fields. ALSO, we had the entire northern side of the mountain to ourselves. As you can imagine, the mountain is quiet right now so if you are serious about getting to Tanzania and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, DO IT NOW! We were by ourselves in 4 of the 8 camps, went days without seeing any other trekkers, and even the summit was really quiet compared to every video we have ever seen of this mountain. I cannot say enough great things about Trek 2 Kili or our experience on the 9 day northern Circuit!!

Me and my partner had a fantastic trip in Tanzania last year. We were very satisfied with the entire Trek2Kili crew (guides, cook, porters) everyone was great and made our trip the best possible. Extra shoutout to our guides Hussein and Elia who helped us on the summit night/day which was a tough one but with their help we made it to Uhuru Peak!

Our trip with Trek2Kili included a 7 day safari (Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorogoro crater), a 9 day Northern Circuit trek on Kilimanjaro, and a final day at the Osiligilai Maasai lodge. We were looking for a reliable company that took safety seriously, treated their employees well, and could provide an amazing experience for our first time in Africa. Happy to report that Trek2Kili delivered on all of these!

Choosing a Company:

It can be difficult to pick a tour company to this region of Tanzania because of the glut options available and the fact that it is hard to tell from afar how much to trust the promises on the various websites, especially given the cost of the trip. Here are a few reasons we chose Trek2Kili:
- They are KPAP-certified partners, which gave us confidence that the employees would be treated well
- They are locally-owned, which meant that the money we were spending would be going directly to support the local economy and not a big corporation abroad
- They had sufficient experience on Kilimanjaro that we could trust that their rental gear was high-quality and that their team was well-trained and supported to manage the trip
- They are very responsive – we were able to get answers to our questions quickly, even over the holidays, when other companies we reached out to took over a week to get back to us
- They helped us tailor our experience so we got the most out of the trip, including arranging for a suitable post-hike experience with the Maasai that would still give us plenty of time to make our departure flight.
In distinguishing Trek2Kili from other operators, we would consider Trek2Kili better able to customize itineraries and experiences than others, and found them to be well-suited to exclusive, customized trips. We saw other operators that seemed to only offer bulk, standardized trips, and while Trek2Kili can handle large groups, they also offer high-quality, private, custom experiences. For example, on the safari, we were the only two clients in the Jeep (made for 7 passengers) so we could move around for better views, and we could linger to watch animals that we found fascinating rather than feeling pressure to move on. We had the freedom to strike off in directions well away from the crowds of Jeeps that were on the main paths, and as a result it felt less like a tram ride in a theme park and more like an adventure into a national park. On the trek, we were the only two clients hiking with our two local guides, so we were able to have one-on-one conversations with them about the mountain and the local culture. In part because of the routes that Trek2Kili offers, we were able to access parts of Kili that offered the same feeling of solitude and communion with nature that invites many backpackers to the mountains – for three nights of our trek, we were the only team at the camp, as opposed to the camps with hundreds of people. So Trek2Kili was a great choice for people seeking higher-quality experiences that can be fit to your needs and tastes.
Some people seem to select different companies for different parts of their trip (one company for the safari, and another for trekking, for example). We chose to book everything with Trek2Kili because in the event that we needed to change a part of the itinerary or if something went off-plan (say, if our baggage didn’t arrive on the plane), we would only have to work with one company to coordinate a response. We didn’t have to worry about the trek leaving without us if the safari went long because both were being managed through the same company. As a result, our entire 17 day trip was seamless and enjoyable. Trek2Kili arranged all of our activities, including airport transfers, hotels, meals, and local transportation and we had absolutely no problems at all. Everything was on-time, well-maintained, friendly, and comfortable; as English is widely spoken/understood and the dollar is widely used in the tourism industry, it is also an easier acclimation for Americans like ourselves.

Safari:

We heard that many hikers only do a trek while in Tanzania, but we would definitely recommend doing a safari while there. It’s a much different experience and you can see an amazing amount and variety of animals that are likely not on the flanks of Kili. Since we already planned a 9-day trek in tents, we chose a 7-day hotel safari. Our trip started at the high-end, western-style Kilimanjaro Wonders hotel in Moshi. Josepht, our driver and guide, picked us up in a Jeep and we drove out to Tarangire National Park.
Each day was a similar pattern, with breakfast at the hotel, driving to the next park, and an 8 or so hour game drive, where our guide took us around the vehicle trails to find the local wildlife. Lunches were boxes provided by the hotels we had stayed at the previous nights. Breakfasts and dinners were at the hotels. My wife is vegetarian, and Trek2Kili arranged for each of the box lunches to have that option for her; the hotels also accommodated with vegetarian options.
We had a great time at all of the national parks, and Josepht was great at finding animals, explaining behaviors, and generally telling us all about the wildlife, plants, and areas we visited. He was very knowledgeable and entertaining – we learned a lot from him about the local ecosystem as well as the people of the region. We saw all of the big 5 as well as countless other animals. Unlike other companies, Trek2Kili did not have a daily limit on driving miles/fuel for the safari, which meant that we were able to really explore the “backcountry” of the parks where few other Jeeps were. We also got see Josepht show off some impressive 4x4 style driving skills that would have been impossible in the large tour-bus-style vehicles sported by other companies. All of the lodges we stayed at were great: atmospheric, clean, comfortable, safe, with good food and wifi (at least in the lobby, usually in our room). We got to see an elephant ~100 feet outside our semi-permanent tent in Tarangire and a large-spotted genet run through the lobby of our hotel in NdoroThe itinerary laid out by Trek2Kili was absolutely perfect- starting close by in Tarangire, moving up through Lake Manyara, to the Serengeti, and culminating in the trip into Ngorogoro Crater and a rim-side room with a view before returning to Moshi. FYI, recommended tip for safaris is $70/day for the whole car per their website. There aren’t a lot of convenient ATMs on the trek, so bringing extra cash is a good idea.

Trek:

Following our safari, we returned to the Kilimanjaro Wonders hotel in Moshi, where our head guide Paul met us at the hotel lobby to go over the plan and gear. The next day our team picked us up via a bus and then we started our Northern Circuit trek, with a quick stop for snacks and sundries if you forgot something. Although we had signed up for a group trek, the other people ended up going early, so it was just the two of us on our scheduled date. In addition to us, there were 2 guides and 12 porters (including the chef, waiter, and ‘pilot’ aka toilet manager). Trek2Kili is a KPAP member, which includes minimum pay and standards for their porters, such as good clothes, 3 meals a day, maximum carry weight, and support for porters who get sick and miss a trek. We could tell during our trek that our group was good spirits – there was a lot of laughter and cheerful conversation among the porters at camp– and everyone in our team had proper equipment, including good shoes, rain gear, and a waterproof tent. While on the mountain, we did encounter porters from other companies that seemed miserable and poorly equipped, so choosing a trekking company that makes your team’s safety and happiness a priority really does matter.
Our guides were Paul and Alex, who were fantastic guides, backpackers, and team leaders. At least one and usually both of them were hiking with us at all times. They were very attentive to safety, both from altitude and from the weather, making sure that we were eating/drinking/sleeping enough to be healthy and keeping an eye out for signs of AMS. They were able to keep to the trail even when we couldn’t see it, and were able to adjust their pace to match what we could handle on any given terrain. On summit day, Paul even carried my wife’s pack for the final summit push. And we made it to the top, in large part because of their dedication and expertise.
Though we went during Jan/Feb, which is usually a dry season, it rained on us almost every day. The tent generally stayed dry, although our clothes generally did not dry out overnight as we were hoping. Be prepared just in case, and definitely pack all of your equipment in dry bags! The equipment provided by Trek2Kili (sleeping bags, tents, sleeping mats) was in good condition and was effective at keeping us dry and warm.
The 9-day Northern Circuit route provided a lot of time for acclimatization to the altitude – for both us and our team. Most of our days were between 2 and 5 hours of hiking for 4-8 miles, but Alex would match the pace we needed to be comfortable. We were provided hot water each day after the trek to clean up, and because of the rain, we spent most of our downtime in our tent, reading or napping. We were very well-fed on the trek, including many delicious vegetarian options. Each meal also had hot drinks available (coffee, tea, chocolate). Summit day was very tough, beginning at midnight, arriving at the summit around 8am, and getting to our camp at 4pm. Both the ascent and descent were long and difficult, in part due to the weather, much more so than the other days. Our guides were encouraging and patient, which helped us successfully summit. We encountered another Trek2Kili expedition near the summit, and they also ended up making it. When you do the trek right, it is much easier to get to the top, and Trek2Kili did the trek right.

Summary:

Following our trek, Trek2Kili arranged a one night stay at the Osiligilai Maasai Lodge for our cultural experience. This was also a great visit, detailed in my review of the lodge. Overall, Trek2Kili did a great job with our trip. We would definitely recommend doing both a safari and a Kili trek to really experience the different parts of Tanzania, and we would definitely recommend Trek2Kili for people who want to do it right.

Just returned from Africa and an incredible experience. Azizi and his staff were simply fantastic. Our group was small, so it was nice to develop relationships with everyone we were sharing the climb with (we laughed a lot!). Our meals were excellent and provided the perfect start and end to each day's hike. The guides and porters were attentive to detail and their enthusiasm was infectious. The knowledge shared with us about the mountain, it's history, its geology, the plants and animals we saw made the trip much more than just a trek to the top of the mountain. Sending a picture of us at the top of the mountain home to our family (while we were still on the mountain) was really appreciated. When one of our group experienced a medical issue, it was dealt with professionally and quickly. You could not have asked for more. From our first contact with Azizi, through his patience with many questions, his advice and recommendations and right to the last day, this was a wonderful experience and I recommend Trek2Kili without hesitation. This experience was everything we could have hoped for. Thanks!
