wander in the woods
Sep 2021
as many times as I have traveled near this area, this was my first visit. I don't know whether I chose the wrong time to visit or what but I saw very little blooming and it was tremendously confusing trying to navigate the roads to determine where things are.

Selling tickets on days when we cannot use them
Sep 2021 • Family
I paid for 4 tickets that I have not used because it cannot be used on the day purchased. Your website allowed me to pay $97 for 4 tickets on September 5, knowing that the Calloway gardens does not accept these online ticket on Labor Day weekend. I have requested a refund and still waiting to hear back from viator.

second class season pass holder
May 2021
I am a season pass holder at Callaway Gardens. I too am disappointed at how the "gardens" look today. It has become a housing community that has some overgrown azaleas if you know where to look.My main complaint today is that I was denied admission today because a ski tournament was being held....I had to pay the gate admission although I have a yearly pass! I rode my bike to the beach area to find most of the people there had very little interest in the tournament being held. I'd like an answer on how most of these lower income were able to pay the inflated gate admission for a ski tournament that they had no interest in? Is there some social program being offered that I am unaware of?

Wonderful tour of Christmas lights. Best tour of Lights that I've seen. Better than Lights in New York City at Christmas.

Beautiful lights and butterflies
Dec 2019 • Family
We visited FIL for the tenth or eleventh time. It looks like a new scene or two were added and some of our favorites remain. The trolley is so much better than riding in your car when you have older kids who can sit for that length of time. We enjoyed singing carols and talking about all the scenes.

We were shocked at the length of the line going up to the ticket scan but pleasantly surprised at how quickly it moved.

Afterwards, we were disappointed in the food we ordered. The fries were not even warm and the funnel cake was dry and hard. The corn dog was a foot long but $8!!! $65 total for three canned sodas, a corn dog, funnel cake, chili cheese fries, and three Orders of deep fried Oreos ($8 for four Oreos). We’ve ordered here before so we knew the prices were high; we just hoped the food would be better. Or at least like the fair food we are accustomed to having.

The giant Christmas tent was pretty empty but I can guess that’s because they’ve sold so much of their stock.

The next day we visited the Day Butterfly Exhibit and it was gorgeous, as usual. Lots of flying and flittering, amongst a beautiful backdrop of plants (see pics below).

I miss being able to visit the other gorgeous buildings and exhibits we went to when our kids were little. They used to love the outdoor space to run and play in - especially the little kids’ maze/play fort in the back of one of the buildings. We missed seeing all the unusual plants and the poinsettia tree, too. We do hope these areas will reopen one day for the public to enjoy.

Our review would be higher if there were more things to do at Callaway for the daily admission and/or FIL price. We’ve done the bird show several times and visited the Discovery Center. We’ve hiked on other trips but didn’t get to this time. We just hope the gardens will see it feasible to reopen their closed areas one day!

Very relaxing day trip
Dec 2019
My husband & I visited Callaway Gardens to specifically see the Festival of Lights but decided to drive around and view the grounds. We ended up going to see the Butterfly House and also went to the Discovery Center. The Discovery Center was basically closed due to a wedding but we bought a few items in the very unique gift shop. The Butterfly House was beautiful & interesting. Along with the beauty of the butterflies, the plants & flowers were amazing.

Winter Visit
Dec 2019
We visited in winter, on a day that was cold, then warm, then cold again, as is common. Although there weren't a ton of flowers, we still enjoyed walking through the Azalea Bowl, Holly Trail, and Rhododendron Trail. Most of the plants had signage and a few were in bloom, especially on the Holly Trail. It was peaceful and we rarely saw others while walking. We visited the Chapel, which was quite solemn, the Butterfly Center (loved the display of chrysalis), the Pioneer Log Cabin (great for history buffs), and saw the Birds of Prey show (30 minutes felt very short, but was still fun). All together, this took about four hours and I feel as if we did/saw everything we set out to see. In any other season, we probably would taken a longer hike or done some other outdoor activities, but in the winter these are a bit limited.

Festival of Lights: This was our first time attending this event, and it was a little different than expected. We booked ahead to ride the trolly and had the first time slot (6pm - 7pm). I'm glad we booked the trolly and went early, because even on a slow weekday the line of cars waiting to go in was quite long as we exited. The event itself is fun, with lots of light and, when there are no lights, carol sining and punny pre-recorded jokes. The ride lasts about an hour. There's also a "Christmas Village" and snack vendors, many of which are outside vendors that you would expect to find at seasonal fairs and carnivals. There's a lot to do for kids, such as meeting Santa, a bouncy playground, and more. It's not super polished, but it was still a fun time.

Fantasy in Lights and time in the park
Nov 2019
We purchased our passes though Groupon which really saved us some money. We went to the Butterfly exhibit. The speaker was great. She shared a lot of information. It was very nice having the butterflies all around. We also went to the raptor exhibit. It was outside and really neat. The handlers did a great job with all of the information that they shared. The trolley that we rode for the fantasy in lights was really cold. There were a lot of lights at the beginning of the trail but the end was very empty. I wish the lights went all the way to the end. They were beautiful.
