Your shipwreck voyage begins in 1856, the year the Isaac Allerton sank. On your visit to the Key West Shipwreck Treasure Museum, view artifacts from this ship, one of the richest shipwrecks in Key West history. Spend hours exploring the remnants of old ships and learning about the fascinating salvage industry through artifacts and interactive exhibits. Learn about how shipwrecks became a profession that made Key West one of the richest cities in America. See what it was like to work in the dangerous shipwreck scavenge industry back in the mid-19th century, as well what sorts of rewards were reaped. Sift through artifacts and watch informative video presentations as you dive deeper into this fascinating world. Watch actual underwater footage of a shipwreck. And summon all your strength to lift a silver bar salvaged from a Spanish galleon. Learn the intriguing story of the Isaac Allerton. Many of the treasures throughout the museum were excavated from its watery grave. Find out about the people who struck it rich risking their lives to recover wealth from the sea. Then do as the ship captains once did and climb a 65-foot (20-meter) observation tower for the pinnacle of your museum experience.

    Ghoulish history
A cozy dimly-lit nest that is chock-full of dusty historical nautical treasures. Fascinating aspects of how Key West got its start as a pack of shipwreck scavengers. These dueling scavenger families would greedily strip a wreck lickety-split. Take the cargo and probably knock-in a few heads. These rapacious ghouls were the precursors before the mob-connected rum runners arrived for the Havana circuit. Nice multi-level compact museum with a high density of excellent displays and thoughtful narratives.

    Fun museum
This museum was well done with videos, history, artifacts, etc. The walk to the top of the tower is well worth it. There was a good combination of videos, stories, history, and artifacts.

    Thumbs up.
The bad reviews are people expecting shiny cleaned up things and chests of treasure. If you have a true and realistic interest in Florida shipwrecks and artifacts then you will enjoy this museum.

    Great for all ages
This was really a great place. They do a great job at making you feel like you are in an old ship. It’s awesome to see all the artifacts they have. Capt John was very educational and fun. The look out tower has a great view of key west.

    Maybe not worth it.
Very small museum, interesting but limited in scope, tower climb was the highlight but due to weather, couldn't make it to the top

I give it a thumbs up!
Visiting Key West, I decided to do some touristy stuff, so I decided to go to the shipwreck museum. It was very interesting, it will keep your interest. It’s not too long either, so it never gets boring. Also wasn’t expensive at all. I give it a thumbs up for sure. You should definitely take the time to go through this museum.

A fun stop that’s worth the admission
It’s a small museum that is packed with artifacts. Captain Joe is another hidden gem on this island. He’s very entertaining and knowledgeable.

    A nice little stop
Fairly informative. Really enjoyed the tower. A nice man named Joe was providing corny jokes and information to everyone which was cute. Not a bad little museum if you take the time to read the exhibits there is some good information.

    Shipwreck history
Small museum, explains/shows the history of what drove the treasure hunting in the keys. There was an actor dressed in period clothes telling /answering questions about the turmoils of the time. It has a great birds eye view of Key West from the lookout tower, 6 stories high! Good value, I recommend this for teens & older.

    Interesting
Small but interesting museum with short films about shipwreck and salvage, which is integral to Key West's history. The guide was with us for the first part of our visit and let us explore on our own after a presentation.

    Interesting Look into the Past
Many interesting exhibits that paint the picture of bygone days in Key West. Be sure to check out the bar of silver!

    Very disappointed...
Overall, very little display items like gold or treasures. Mainly just nautical stuff. Even had videos on large monitors with seats for you to sit and watch boring stuff.

A tiny gem packed with history!
What a great museum. It's small but chock full of displays, artifacts and treasures. The introductory video was informative and enjoyable. Our tour guide, Charlotte, was fantastic. She played a character from the past and had a fascinating perspective of the lives of the men and women from the 19th century. Her thorough knowledge of the history of shipping and shipwrecks was happily shared. She is a huge asset to the museum and spent a lot of time talking with us and answering our questions. Her knowledge and passion for sharing the shipwreck history were apparent and appreciated. We would highly recommend a stop at this gem of a museum to anyone wanting to learn about life in the keys during the 19th century.

    So much history!
There is so much history to be found in the Key's and it can be a little over-whelming, but go here! There is a short video at the start, and then as you go thru there are live actors in period costumes explaining what is was like in the early days. At the end, don't forget to climb up the tower for 1 of the most spectacular views of Key West you will ever see!

We learned so much about the history of Key West
We didn't know what to expect, but really enjoyed learning about the history of Key West. We had no idea it famous for "wrecking". The tour starts with a short video and is self-guided from there. Definitely check out the view from the lookout tower. Only complaint is that it was a bit overpriced.

If you are a museum person like myself, you will love this one. You can easily spend a couple hours here if you read all the exhibits, and there is a lot to look at. I found the subject matter very interesting as a history of the beginnings of Key West. The lookout tower is also very cool.

I thought it was worth the money (it was a standard museum cost), and would visit again in the future if I was with a group that wanted to visit.

The museum is small and even though I stopped and read everything we got through it in about 35 minutes, not including the climb to the top viewing deck. To be a ship wreck museum, I wish there were more items found in wrecks that were displayed. At over $16 a person, I didn’t find it worth the money.

The climb to the top viewing deck is not for the faint of knees, but if you are physically able to get up there, it’s definitely worth a look.

Neat attraction for middle school kids who have a specific interest in shipwreck salvage in the 1800’s or have a report they need to do on the topic. Otherwise, overpriced for what it is and lacks hands-on exhibits to engage kids under 12. This would be one small exhibit in a medium sized science museum. On the positive side, staff was friendly.

Let me make something very clear. I have a degree in History and thoroughly enjoy any activity/place that offers an insight into the past. But this place was a big let down. Our main complaint was the price. My family of 4 cost nearly $50 to enter. At best we spent about 20 - 30 minutes here and most of it was on top of the observation tower. Yes, all the exhibits were well constructed and not overdone. There just wasn't enough to see and "experience" to make it worth the amount of money spent. Opening up a history book would have been more exciting and offered a broader learning opportunity. I feel that if there was a tour guide or more exhibits that are interactive it would be a better experience.

Went here today to see this museum. The best thing about this museum is going up to the top of the deck where you oversee the Gulf of Mexico as well as the Atlantic Ocean. But the museum inside leaves a lot to be desired.

It’s ok. Some cool details, a watch you can climb up. I wouldn’t expect to spend a bunch of time here but, if you can get in cheap enough, it might be worth a look. 7 year old was not entertained at all.

You watch a 14 minute video, look at some dust musty stuff in glass display cabinets. Highlight was a live interpreter who was animated, enthusiastic, and very knowledgeable. Passionate about Key West and its history. Nice view from lookout tower.

We really learned a lot about the history of all of the shipwrecks that were salvaged off of Key West. So much of the wealth of Key West came from salvaging.
The museum also opens earlier than the other museums in the area on a Sunday morning. It was a nice way to start the day.
Loved climbing the tower. Great view. Worth the climb!!!

If you get the trolley hop on and hop off bus for even 1 day, you can get a discounted ticket for this. Honestly, it's not really worth the full price. It was interesting and gives a lot of information about the shipwrecks, but it's pretty quick to get through. However, the tower at the top is worth the beautiful view!

I have been to the island at least 10 times in the past 2 years, and have gotten numerous pictures and videos of haunting and apparitions at the Shipwreck Museum. The Ghosts and Gravestones Tour is wonderful. I suggest a good camera and taking LOTS of pictures, and then going through them a couple of days later.
