Overview
Experience the flora and fauna near Fort Lauderdale on this guided, 90-minute, urban eco tour. Choose from a kayak or a paddleboard, then head out with a small group to the Richardson Historic Park and Nature Preserve in Wilton Manors. Learn the history of the local river and its early settlers. See exotic and native tropical plants, trees and fruits, plus birds, crabs, fish and other animals along the way. Afterward, enjoy fresh coconut water and a snack. Equipment rental and a brief instructional session are included.
What to Expect
Your tour starts from the Richardson Historic Park and Nature Preserve in Wilton Manors, just 10 minutes South of Ft. Lauderdale. After checking in, you will receive a basic introduction to paddling. Your guide will then set you up with your choice of kayak or paddleboard.

Listen to a brief history about the river and its early settlers, including the Native Americans. Your guide points out exotic and native tropical plants, trees and fruits. Important changes to the environment and the people most responsible for them are also discussed. You'll visit a surprisingly secluded lagoon while keeping an eye out for birds, crabs, fish and other animals all along the way. See man made canals that were added to the river to accommodate the luxury homes that now line the riverside. Despite its urban setting, the river supports a wide variety and great abundance of wildlife. You'll cover a total distance is approximately 2-miles round-trip all at a relaxed pace.

Upon returning to the park, enjoy the freshest coconut water available as your guide cracked the coconut for you! Neighbors of the preserve often provide fresh local fruits from their trees so depending on the season enjoy a snack of mangoes, bananas, carambola (starfruit) or avocados made into fresh guacamole.

exactly as trip advisors said; great experience

3 of us went for the Urban Tour; Easter Sunday morning at 10am. The Kayaks were easy to manage and Diane was pleasantly informative. Plenty of birdlife and iguanas. A very relaxing way to spend 1.5 hours.

very pleasant and informative

James, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable about the area. The kayaking was not particularly strenuous but was quite pleasant. Saw some herons and a manatee.

Great for families and novice kayakers; knowledgeable and accommodating staff

Took the sunset paddle on the Middle River with my family. There were 7 of us -- 5 adults, 1 teen, and an 11-year-old. James was a terrific guide -- personable and knowledgeable about the flora, fauna, and geography on the river. It's a fun...More

Thanks for the heads up! Complacency is a precursor to most accidents. I'll remind my staff of this point.

Unexpected Fun

We are always looking for outdoor activities that might be fun and different and thought kayaking on the Middle River would be worth a try. Atlantic Coast Kayak is located at Wilton Manors, home of the Richardson Historic Estate. Although the building is closed except...More
