Stoppuðum í gott spjall og ætlum að koma aftur. Awesome experience and great riding. Magnús welcomed us warmly and after the ride we had good coffee and donuts. - vojtan20240 contributionsAmazing Horse Rental Experience!I had an incredible experience renting a horse from Alhestar - horse rental. The staff was friendly, professional, and made sure I was matched with the perfect horse for my skill level. The horses were well cared for, healthy, and well-trained, making the ride smooth and enjoyable. The trails were breathtaking, with beautiful scenery and well-planned routes for both beginners and experienced riders. I also appreciated how much the staff genuinely cared for their horses, which made the experience even better. Whether you're a first-time rider or an experienced equestrian, I highly recommend this place. I’ll definitely be coming back!Written March 8, 2025
- karennah20240 contributionsDO NOT BOOKI am extremely disappointed with our experience at this horseback riding place. We made our reservation several weeks in advance and received a booking confirmation, so we were excited for the day. However, when we arrived at the location, there was no one there. We called multiple times, but the line kept hanging up on us. We thought we might be at the wrong spot due to the confusing directions on their website, so we waited around for 20 minutes past our reservation time. Finally, we received a call from someone telling us that no one could do the tour and they did not contact us earlier because they didn’t speak English. This was incredibly frustrating and unprofessional. We were really looking forward to this experience, and to be left hanging without any communication or heads-up was completely unacceptable. Definitely would not recommend this place.Written December 29, 2024
- monicasW9950QG0 contributionsFamily tourBooked the 2 hour family trip. The guide was nice and the horses were friendly and in very good condition. The ride went on in the local area. We were a mix of experienced and unexperienced riders. Although we paid for a two hour ride it was shorten down to just one hour and additional 20 minutes to prepare the horses. The guide explained this was due to safety reasons because of unexperienced riders. There was no information about this at their home page. We got only half of what we paid for, I feel a bit scammed. I recommend this place only for experienced riders.Written July 25, 2024

- 428fional0 contributionstruly icelandic horseback riding experiencei'd read the reviews about alhestar online when i booked it for my last day, a perfect culmination of my 4-wk trip in iceland. true, magnus does not speak much english, but he definitely knows more english than i know in icelandic. nonetheless, his happiness, humor, and passion are easily understandable. his first question was whether or not i had experience on horses, when i was already on my horse, and my answer was a definite no. there's no lengthy safety review (a helmet of course) because with his guidance and horse, you don't really need one (similar to the atv's - you had to know which buttons were gas/brake, and that was it; horses are even less complicated). he held the rein closely the first 2 hrs, but the last hr, he let me ride solo all the way back (brutka (sp?) was probably also the most well-behaved older mare, and she mostly followed his horse, occasionally having the rare side quest). we passed lupine fields, lakes, golfers, and of course, thorli beach. his phone helps with translation, and we were even able to talk politics by miming, but ultimately, that last hr of being able to just ride the horse, communicate with the horse, that was bliss. we had coffee/tea/biscuits with his farmhands afterwards; they know spanish best, but it was a unique culture blending experience. i should've taken up his offer on dinner, but went to my reservation instead.Written July 6, 2024
- Curiosity518451574830 contributionsBest horseriding everThe guy really went out of his way for us, the horses seemed well trained and safe, perhaps the best horse experience ive had so far. Ive ridden horses a handful of times, but on this occasion there was just enough independence for us to hop on and move around a little without a lead, and yet the horses were clearly obedient to the owner, who then leashed and lead us while on horseback himself, from walking to a slightly faster trot, providing me with an opportunity to learn one or two exta things and feel excited, in what i felt was a safe and controlled environment. Would reccommend to allWritten May 2, 2024

- Adventure109828159470 contributionsA personalized ride with great hostsOutstanding experience with Magnus and Lilja. We went with our whole family (2 adults, 7 y/o, 10 y/o), and the ride felt very personalized. The guides are very warm and generous with their time and knowledge. An excellent opportunity to spend some time with native Icelanders while riding across the rugged but beautiful countryside.Written September 22, 2023
- Meaghan G0 contributionsBlack Sand Beach Horseback rideMy husband and I had an awesome time doing the Black Sand Beach horseback riding tour. Even tho it was raining we still enjoyed every minute of the ride. Once we got to the beach we were able to let the horses run along the shore. I would definitely go back and I will be telling people if you are looking for a place to go horseback riding in Iceland Alhestar horse rental and tours is the place to go.Written September 16, 2023

- L9460XNkb0 contributionsAlhestar - Highlight of my entire Iceland tripWOW. This ride was the highlight of my 8 days in Iceland. I rode with a different outfit a few days earlier in a group of 20 just walking along. This ride was the opposite. I signed up for a medium experience ride to a black sand beach. 2 others plus our two guides was our group. We walked, we experienced the tolt, and even cantering and galloping on the black sands beach. I think we rode for 3+ hours. The horses were well trained and energetic. Magnus was a delight and truly loves introducing you to the Icelandic horse. They may be vertically challenged but they are sturdy and a wonderful ride. If you are an experienced rider, this is the ONLY place you should ride to truly experience the Icelandic horse!Written August 16, 2023

There is nothing luxurious or fancy here, just horses, horses, and horses! Magnus is a very friendly person and despite the fact that he does not speak English and we even less Icelandic, as a post says below, he does speak horses. And that is a universal language. We let our 13 year old daughter go for a walk with him for almost 2 hours in the surrounding area. She came back delighted, Magnus made her experiment with all the kinds of gaits that Icelandic horses move at. The lesson was at 6 p.m. paid in advance online there is no reception strictly speaking, you have to enter the stable if no one is outside. Our daughter is at galloping level 4 and this suited her completely because she was completely independent. Magnus and very kind, he knows his region and his horses perfectly and allows, during an outing, to really enjoy the region off the beaten track. It may not be everyone's dream, but we are far from riding on horseback on tired nags, here everything is authentic and true!

I never had better "riding lessons" like this! I made all 3 tours and I loved it. Being for hours on a horse will teach you better riding then every hour in a stable. Especially the different kinds like on the beach, dunes or lava fields. Magnus, the owner, was soo kind and his horses teached me very well. I will definitely come back - I hope this year 😊🐎❤️ Greetings, Michelle

What a spectacular ride! Ali picked us up from our Airbnb in Reykjavik (for an extra fee, cheaper than taking a taxi for our group of 4) and brought us to their property where the horses were all ready for our two hour ride. They took us through fields and a black sand beach where we all experienced the 5 gaits of the Icelandic horse. The horses were easy to maneuver and ride and beautiful with easygoing personalities. When we came back we all had coffee, tea, juice, biscuits and he brought out a tub of candy to snack on before Ali drove us back to the city. Highly recommend to everyone!
We had to pay cash onsite because the website didn’t work when we tried to book, but they were quick to respond to my emails and had everything prepared ahead of time.

The man who took me on my private quiet ride over pastures and moors was the kindest, most gentle man to both me the sweet icelandic ponies. Itviscevident he loves the ponies and they love him.
I had tried to book rides in so many places. But being just one person it was impossible until I came across Alhestar. And I believe I was blessed I did not have to be one of many but had personalised attention and a tailor made package designed with my wishes in mind, at a cost comparable if not less than some of the other places I had enquired.
As a mature woman who has ridden all my life, I wanted a no fuss gentle communion with a beautiful horse and that was precisely what I got. Not only with a horse but with that horse's human. Not getting into other riding establishments turned out to be a blessing.
This was my last experience in Iceland. Literally the best was saved 'til last.
Thank you so much!

The most amazing and friendly tour to do in Iceland, the absolute highlight of our trip. Both instructors were so kind and welcoming, allowing my experienced sister to ride and guiding me along for a short time. The man, Maggi, and the woman Sigrún were extremely helpful and very nice. After the tour we sat with them for coffee and a conversation. Would recommend anyone wanting a true Icelandic experience to go on this trip. Bring cash, it is preferred, and by the end you'll want to give them it over card.

Worst experience in Iceland. The guide was 45’ late, he did not speak English and the tour was stopped half way. When we asked for partial reimbursement and pay for what we got, no answer. Just a tourist trap, indeed.

We had a really great experience at Alhestar. We were picked up and dropped off in Reykjavik (even though I accidentally had booked the trip a day earlier than what I had intended). The people there were amazing and it was such a personable experience, not like many other places where you ride back to back with 20 other people. The landscape is beautiful and the horses were great! We were 2 people, one with prior experience and one beginner and it worked out well and we both really enjoyed it.
Highly recommend! The people there alone really make it worth going.

Maggi took oss reiðtúr and í best verðinu rosalega was this gaman hos oss mikið fjör. Maggi answer grínisti and passaði að allir væri öruggir og klárir með allt saman. Excellent hringur sem við tókum. Alveg rosalega flottir hestar and goðir. I am þó aðeins vanur hestum en mikið gott að sitja á þeim.

This was an amazing experience and the owner was great! He helped our large group get on the horses quickly and was really hospitable. He even welcomed in afterwards for coffee and hung out with us until we had to get back to town.
Highly recommend this to everyone.
