Meet at our riverside headquarters located just 2 miles South of Buena Vista, Colorado 30-45 minutes prior to your scheduled departure time. Upon arrival our helpful staff will direct you on how to prepare for the day and will make recommendations about rental gear (wetsuits, splash jackets and river shoes) based on weather/ water conditions. After getting changed into your river clothes and receiving a comprehensive safety orientation, we will transport you about 15 minutes to the river put-in location. After paddling through 6 miles of the heart pumping rapids of the Numbers section you will either end your half-day trip and return to our office, or if you are doing the full-day trip you will enjoy a riverside lunch. The full-day trip then continues into the technical class III-IV Narrows section and ends at our office take-out. Don't forget to view your photos before saying good bye to your guide!

      Full Day Rafting Trip
My wife and did an all day trip which included the numbers and narrows. Our guide Tony was great, he gave us a lot of good whitewater knowledge. Had picnic lunch on the bank. Would definitely raft with WAR again.

We went on a guided tour with Tony and it was awesome! He was so skilled and friendly. We only went swimming once because we decided to jump off a rock. He gave me a jacket after. We will definitely be requesting Tony for our next trip. Thanks!

      Do it! 🤗
This was a very organized and professionally managed trip from start to finish. No unwanted surprises. Our guide was experienced, safety minded, congenial and gave much interesting information along the way of the terrain, plants, history, etc. We were a group of just myself and my daughter as one person cancelled at the last minute perhaps because it was the first trip of the season.? 🤔 Our wet suits, equipment and changing area were all very good. Each set of rapids was explained as we approached them and we were instructed on our paddling directions. I have to comment that we did the full day trip with lunch provided which was excellent. This I might add is a very good recommendation from me being vegetarian and pretty particular about my food. The Apache Road on the way back was very narrow and one way gravel hugging the cliff with a precipitous drop off and 2 creek crossings but was maneuvered safely. Good to know if this type of thing is frightening to you so sit on the left side of the van if it is! There were souvenir items for purchase afterwards if interested. I in retrospect would suggest a t-shirt saying “I survived not only the rapids but the Apache Trail as well!” 🤣 Thank you Wilderness Aware for a great excursion! PS: This was the Upper Salt River in Arizona which was not a choice to pick for this review.

      Great tour, great guide
We had a great time rafting along the Browns canyon today. Our guide, Gato, was excellent at navigating the river, very knowledgable, and told us some fun stories along the way. I usually don't write reviews, but I am making an exception today to support these folks!

      Beautiful and thrilling
Our family of four thoroughly enjoyed our full day rafting experience with Wilderness Aware Rafting. Tony, our guide, was very skilled at navigating us through the gorgeous Brown’s Canyon. He had us totally prepared for Numbers in the afternoon. He even served us a wonderful picnic style lunch in between. The staff was friendly and patient. All were enthusiastic keeping the things fun. Definitely an experience we’d not only recommend, but we’d totally do it all over again!

GROAT (greatest raft of all time)
Our family of three teens had a great time. We had minimal rafting experience and we were not sure what to expect but our guide was a great teacher and coach. It was our youngest’s 14th birthday and he had a great time. This was a great and adventuresome trip.

      What an amazing experience
It was our first time rafting. Colton and Ellie did a great job making sure everything went well for our first time. They really made our rafting experience amazing. Colton was our direct guide and he was very professional and was very knowledgeable. Glad we decided to go with this company. Thanks again, from Fort Worth.

      Unprepared
Authentic advertising. This is not a family friendly float trip when you have to go over the 3rd wave in Salida. There is no way I would take a child over that! Very scary. The other two waves and the dam chute were also more than what I would consider part of a mild float trip, but the big wave was dangerous. We repeatedly asked when booking and signing in if this was a “mild” float trip!

      Amazing River, Amazing Guides
The guides were so fun and funny, and competent. We had a great time. Would go again without hesitation. They were also a well oiled machine in quickly loading and unloading boats and getting us set up. Never a dull moment.

Bad resue and packing gear in with your clients
I fell out of raft at zoom from, there was no room to lean into the raft due to lunch cargo. Our lead guide gave a great safety review before we left. Unfortunately when we hit zoom floor sideways there was nowhere to lean in and the wave sucked me out ,where I was caught in the undertow it was all I could do to get to the surface where I heard the guid say swim to the raft. The undertow was so strong I could hardly come up for a breath. At the safety review they showed if you were to go out the raft and unreachable they would throw a safety rope. No one through a rope. When I finally was able to get my head above the water guide by the name Snack said swim to the boat my response was I can't swim. I was to exhausted to my surprise I still had the paddle in my hand witch I extended to him as I was going under for what I thought was the last time. Snack was able to pull me to the boat and out of the water. Where was the safety rope? I am deeply grateful to Snack if it weren't for him I don't think I would be able to write you this review. Please for the safety of other clients don't put them in the situation that you put me in. Follow your own safety rules, and don't squeeze people in with your gear. I was on raft 5 Meagan was my guide. Please put people's safety first.

Let me start by saying we have used this company every year for past 10 years and always had a great time so I considered this was maybe a fluke and I waited weeks before deciding to write this review...but it's still bothering me. We did half day Numbers (me, my husband, 17 yo daughter and her 17 yo boyfriend). We had another Father and his adult son with us. The 17 yo's chose to sit up front and our guide (his name was "Dude") said that the people up front needed to be good paddlers. We got stuck on at least 2-3 rocks (one for almost 15 min) that we probably shouldn't have even hit. It felt like his steering/planning wasn't great. "Dude" pulled us over to yell at the kids and even cussed at them using the F word. I'm not offended by the F word in general but don't cuss at my kid using it. It was totally unprofessional. After the 2nd rock we were stuck on, I asked if we should maybe switch them out since CLEARLY he was pissed at them and he snapped at me with a "NO!" At this point everyone in the boat was uncomfortable. If you really want the stronger people in the front then why wouldn't we switch...and at that point the kids just wanted to get out and go home anyway. The other crappy thing about the "half" day was that we had to be there by 830a, didn't leave for the water until 915 and the numbers is so fast it was only 90 min at most on the water. Not their fault but don't bother with a half day...go for the full day. Also, at the end when we pulled over to get out, there was a Father and his 2 young sons fly fishing by the beach and our guide basically rammed into one of the kids trying to get to the beach without even asking them to move over or saying excuse me. That Dad was pissed. I will admit that my daughter's boyfriend had never rafted before and maybe got confused a few times early on but he's a 17 yo football player who is strong and figured it out quickly. If you're going to expect more from your paddler's then don't let them sit up front, and maybe increase the min age to 18. I guarantee my kids did better than any 14 yo's who are allowed on this trip but maybe they get cussed at too. We just all felt like he got us stuck on the rocks, then couldn't figure out how to get us UNstuck, and then got mad at us for it. The rest of the staff there were AWESOME and friendly and we've always had great guides before but we'll probably go with another company next time.

Gina, Thank you for the review. The Numbers section is for advanced paddlers and demands aggressive paddling. While your opinion is understandable from your perspective, the safety of your group and the others on the raft was paramount. The teenage paddlers were not following instructions and quit paddling several times which resulted in the incidents you mentioned. The guide navigated you and your family safely with no incidents other than getting stuck. We are sorry you didn't enjoy this trip and we do take pride in delivering a high quality product. We appreciate that you had been rafting with us before and hope you will give us another opportunity in the future.

Our guide Justin was amazing and very knowledgeable. We rafted browns canyon in the morning followed by the numbers in the afternoon. I highly recommend this outfit as they are family oriented and know how to keep teenagers smiling the entire day! We will be back next year no doubt.

The guide, Justin, really made this trip not enjoyable. We sat in the back. You would think after many raft trips he would know not to tie up a big duffle bag such that my leg was squished forward and hurt such that I could not paddle properly. When I told him it was uncomfortable, he got an attitude, angrily saying, I will fix it. Well, after he fixed it, it moved again. Again, he got angry. Finally, he moved the bag close to him so I had range of motion. He was loud. He talked too much. It detracted from the whole experience. This is our fourth rafting trip in Colorado. We so recommend Performance Tours, Glenwood Springs, and Echo Canyon. It is a shame that Echo Canyon sent us to this company.

Sabrina, thank you for your review and we value your feedback. Our company takes pride in the quality of our trips, guides and service to our customers. We have dozens of five-star reviews over the past two-years. It is unfortunate that you didn't click with your guide. The Numbers section is for advanced rafters and is a high-intensity experience with little opportunity to stop and re-adjust equipment. Your safety and the safety of the others on your raft was our highest priority. Based upon our other reviews, your experience was clearly an anomaly. We do offer trips on seven different rivers in Colorado, Arizona and Utah and would be eager to have an opportunity to change your opinion and for you to see why we were ranked in 2020 as a top 10 rafting company in the country.

The Numbers is a great way to experience challenging white-water but it isn't as scary as the Royal Gorge trip. The water was flowing about 1,400 cfs and it was a ton of fun. Wilderness Aware is the best outfitter on the Arkansas River - I've rafted with them now for 29 years on every section of the Arkansas River several times. Their guides are excellent and their attention to customer safety is what sets them apart from other companies.

We are a group of seven (Scout Troop) and Wes was our guide for the canyon and Numbers, a full day of rafting. Wes was our “River Coach” who taught us to row like a team, focus on the rapids and enjoy the moment. We even took his recommendation for dinner, which was also excellent. The boys haven’t stopped talking about their time on the Arkansas River - Thanks Wes!

My daughter and I took a wild ride with Wilderness Aware on June 17. Gato was our guide along with some others to help provide extra power and safety. The river was really big and fast. We had some rafting experience so we had an idea of what to expect but this was extra "spicy" with the huge amount of water and the high speed of the river. Gato was a total pro and it was really impressive how she directed us around the numbers and the narrows. The full day trip was the way to go for full adventure and the workout was real. The lunch was a really nice bonus too.

I booked the Browns/Numbers trip two weeks earlier on my way to Salida. I was so impressed by the staff (as well as the reviews), I decided that this was the group I wanted to raft with. Connor was our guide July 2 for the full day trip. Neither Connor nor the adventure let us down. In comparison, Browns was quite a bit more tame than Numbers, but it was a great way to start the day. Connor's comfort with the river, his engaging smile, and great personality just added to the great adventure going through those crazy rapids on Numbers. We ended up soaking wet, but were smiling ear to ear the entire day. THANK YOU!. Can't wait to raft with you again next year.

    Our guides name was Justin…
Justin was extremely aware of the rich history of the area and the river. He was an excellent conversationalist and kept us entertained! He kept us informed and aware of everything that was going on. He is truly a pro and made us look like Pros too!
Plus he made one heck of a lunch!

    Thanks for everything, Justin!

The water was high, the weather was warm. Michael and Wes were excellent guides and somewhat entertaining. Wes taught us the difference between Murphy's Law and Cole's Law. We experienced Murphy's. I recommend this trip highly. We had a great time. Brown Canyon was fun and Numbers was wildly fun. Thanks for a great time.
