Being an engineer, I continue to be interested in alternative sources of electricity. I have often passed the wind turbines in the Palm Springs area and wondered just how effective they are. On many occasions, some of them are not even turning. Well, by visiting the Palm Springs Windmill Tour, you can get all your questions answered.

In addition to the short video giving the historical perspective of wind turbines, the staff was very helpful in answering my questions. The numerous photos in the office provide specific information on the timeline of the local growth of wind-generated power. As part of the fee, you can download an application to your phone thus providing a “guided” tour of the facility. Since I was alone, I connected my earbuds because it allowed me to walk around each of the dozen stops while I took pictures. It works within the car as well if there are more people. The app is well designed and made it easy to understand the entire operation.

I highly recommend this tour if you have ever had any questions about wind power. (For example, why do some turbines have two blades and some have three?)

After coming to the Coachella Valley for many years and passing these wondrous structures, we decided to take this tour to learn as much as we could. We are so happy we did! Our tour guide, Lyle, was very knowledgeable and made the experience fun and informative. Just being able to get close up to one of these impressive windmills made it worthwhile. We learned a great deal, had a good time, and let’s not forget about the delicious date shake at the end!

We’ve always wanted to learn more about the cool windmills landscaping the edge of Palm Springs. During Covid, this outdoor, self-driving tour is a clever way to see the windmills really up close, learn the 100+-year history of wind energy, and support a local enterprise. Upon entering, we were met by cute Irishman David, who gave us a Kindle loaded with info and we were off, following a short, well-marked educational route. Cost was $40 per car, well worth it for the education on effective renewable energy. This is the future.

When we arrived, we were treated as though we couldn’t follow basic instructions because we didn’t download a video. We weren’t informed about a video. The tour directions informed us we would receive a sanitized iPad which we never received! Instead, we were given a wrinkled piece of paper mentioning a gratuity was appreciated. What in the world!!

I'm so sorry for this bad experience. Please email us at palmspringswindmilltours@gmail.com for a full refund. This is not our protocol and experience hundreds of our customers have experienced. Standard protocol is to be offered a tablet, QR code and now we have an APP to download prior to the tour as options. Gratituies are appreciated but should not be soliticied. We will give you a full refund.

We were driven in a very nice motor coach from the Riverside County Fairgrounds to the site of Windmill Tours. The presenter gave us the option to either watch a video or just listen to his presentation; skip the video as it is just a review of how one of the Windmill Technicians overcame physical barriers at birth to become a rock climber which eventually qualified her to become a windmill technician.
After the video (which could be watched on You Tube), the bus drove around the windmill fields as Steve gave his presentation. He was quite knowledgeable and many of the questions could be answered with internet searches.
The worst part of the tour was our obligated stop to The Windmill Market where we were served date shakes included in the cost but not worth the stop. 95% of the dates consumed in the US originate from Coachella Valley. The shakes were obviously waiting on us awhile as it was nothing but melted ice cream blended with chunks of dates & pits.
Nothing worth acquiring at the gift shop.

Hello - We always appreciate feedback and certainly do not want you to feel that our tour was not up to your standards. With almost 635 with a 4 1/2 stars on TripAdvisor, we feel that our tour has been enjoyed by the majority of our customers. It is educational, fun for all ages and touches on the important contribution to renewable energy. We have had engineers from MIT to elementary schools all across the country that have taken our tour and provided postive feedback. Even if you are not an engineer or a child, getting up close to a windmill to enjoy the majestic size has been noted as thrilling. Since, we are the first commerical wind farm in the US, and have a history of the evolution of windmills, no other farm offers what we do. You can't get that on the Internet. The date shake has been extremely well received and often quoted as the "best in town." We are sorry yours was watered down. Trying to make shakes for 28 people sometimes is hard for a little cafe, but I know they do their best. Please email us at palmspringswindmilltours@gmail.com and we would like to make accommodations to you. We are working on a new video -- and we agree that it needs a refresh. As always, we take reviews very seriously. Thank you!

Three of us visited Palm springs and booked the Windmill Tour. I spoke to them twice on a Friday to book the 10:00 AM tour that Sunday. I spoke to Flora who took my name, phone number , email address and credit card number. We were told to arrive at 9:45 AM that Sunday which we did. In the parking area was 1 additional car with 2 people who had also signed up. We waited until a few minutes before 10:00AM when I called the number. It was an answering service and she indicated she would pass on our names; however, according to her records, the tour was canceled. We left Palm springs very disappointed since we had received no phone call or email indicating the tour was canceled. As we were driving home, I did receive a call from Mr. Buchmaster who is in charge of operations. He indicated he had no record of our reservation and asked if I had received a confirmation email. I told him I hadn't and had no idea I was supposed to get a confirmation email. He said the other couple had booked on Groupon and he had no contact information for them. he was apologetic; however, that didn't help our Sunday plans.

Like everyone who drives past them, I had many questions about the windmills (which are actually called wind turbines) on the I-10. I've seen many cute Insta pictures near them, but little information. The tour was great. The host was from Ireland and really friendly and even recommended a pub in Rancho Mirage. The tour was self guided and we could get out of our cars to take pictures. I loved learning about the failures. The turbines started in the 1980s and there was a steep learning curve. I think it is important to see that technology progresses and takes time. The newest models are so good they are planning to remove some windmills without loosing capacity. I took lots of amazing pictures, and more importantly, learned something new.

Hello Kimberly -- Thank you for your nice feedback. We appreciate you joining us on the tour! You are right about the technology improving...we will ultimately go from 2000 windmills to about 700 or 800 as the wind turbines expire and are replaced with more efficient models.

My family found this very interesting. Our boys were asking questions about the windmills as we were driving into the city, so we thought the tour would be a great idea to get the answers. Our guide David was awesome. He met us and explained how it was going g to work, along with some extra facts that were not mentioned in the tour.

I've driven past them for years, now I've seen them up close and have learned so much about these giant wind turbines. Due to Covid, the guided tour was not available. However, the self-guided tour was excellent! The information presented via the tablet we were given to take with us while driving through the property gave a great introduction to wind and solar power. It answered the question as to why there are so many wind turbines in this location. It was interesting to see the progression of the technology in the blades and towers from the 1980s to the present. The actual pieces of equipment are all here, and we were able to get out of our vehicle to look at them. The highlight was standing under one of the largest turbines, feeling and hearing those blades whooshing through the air. Awesome!! There were lots of photo ops!!

The tour location is very easy to find and the tour begins with a fascinating video of a wind turbine technician. The guide does a short introduction of the wind turbines with interesting facts RE the industry. The small group hops on a comfortable bus and tours the huge towers, seeing the different designs and manufacturers. The guide was well spoken and accommodated the group with answering so many questions. The date shake at the end was a treat. I highly recommend this tour for people with interests in the green industry and why these towers vary in size, location and design...and if they really do kill enormous number of birds....not!
