- jmccahill0 contributionsAmazing naturalist guideThank you Travis for the outstanding naturalist hiking experience. My husband, 19 y/o son and I loved every minute of your knowledge on desert botany, geology, entomology, Native American history and overall love of beautiful Joshua Tree NP. Highlight of our tripWritten March 6, 2025
- ArnieR_130 contributionsTerrific day in Joshua TreeWe had a terrific day with Travis. We wanted a sort of highlights of Joshua Tree and, boy, did Travis deliver. He will, of course, tailor the day to your wishes. In five hours in the park, we gained an understanding of it while driving, walking, lunching and more. Travis is extremely knowledgeable about plants and geology, in particular. The three of us felt as if we learned so much during Joshua Tree 101. He was also very responsive to emails ahead of time in coordinating the day. And just a terrific day, it was.Written February 18, 2025
- James S0 contributionsI can’t imagine a better guide to spend time with Joshua Tree National ParkI can’t think of a better guide than Travis . We spent 2.5 days exploring three parts of Joshua Tree National Park with him and were astounded by his enthusiasm, knowledge, curiosity, and kindness. He offered the perfect blend of education and silence so we could appreciate the incredible natural beauty of JT. Especially appreciated how he was so many aspects of geography, plants, anthropology, climate and much more into an educational lesson which helped cement everything that we learned and Our time exploring with Travis also taught us a lesson that we knew, but weren’t mindful of: that every step we take is important and that we need to be mindful of how we affect the world around us and how seemingly small differences in where we step and what we do can affect worlds. It's incredibly empowering and a great responsibility that we appreciated. Thank you again for a special time.Written January 29, 2025
- jdyan20230 contributionsStop thinking about it and book with Wandering Mojave! We spend two nights in Joshua Tree and it was everything we hoped for. Travis filled our brains with information and kept us safe and comfortable as we made our way through incredible landscapes. We went in being very aggressive with our plan and Travis did an amazing job of paying attention to how we were holding up and made pivots exactly when they were needed to ensure our hike remained fun and the right amount of challenging. Would we hike Joshua Tree again, hell yeah! Would we do it with Travis....we wouldn't do with anyone else! If you are considering Wandering Mojave, stop considering and just book.Written December 14, 2024
- E9260JUdonaldc0 contributionsBest Hiking and Drive TourThe tour of Joshua Tree National Park that Travis gave us was second to none. We covered a lot of ground on his hybrid tour, which included short walks to interesting off-road sights, and learned many fascinating facts about the history, geology, flora, and fauna of the park and the region. He pointed out many features of the park that we would not have noticed on our own. We highly recommend Travis as a guide for anyone who wishes to explore Joshua Tree. We are looking forward to another opportunity to go out with him to visit other parts of the park that we missed on this first visit.Written November 7, 2024
- HAPPAH0 contributionsGreat tour.Very happy we arranged this tour. Wandering Mojave was very easy to work with, and our guide Travis was great -- very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and adapted to our interests. We did the "hybrid" drive and hike tour, which took us to very different parts of the park. "Hiking" was very light -- more like some short flat nature walks. I'm sure the proper hikes would be great too, but the hybrid approach is a good way to sample and learn. All four of us agreed that we got waaayyy more out of the JT visit than we would have without the tour.Written April 1, 2024
- G8200QSmaryl0 contributionsTravis, the amazing wandering hike makerThree of us hired Travis for 3 full day hikes in Joshua Tree Nat Park, and I also hired him for a full day hike in Joshua Tree. Each day, Travis guided us through totally different sections of the park. As Travis told us, Joshua Tree is his hobby, and he obviously delights in “all things in the park” (flowers, trees, shrubs, grasses, insects, rocks, the park’s history and some of the characters who passed through the park...). We enjoyed his relaxed, friendly way of leading us, helping us learn about the wonders of Joshua tree, and always felt safe with him.Written March 4, 2024
- Triciapedia0 contributionsThis is an authentic, friendly, locally owned company. Hire them!Travis is an absolute star. He’s kind, friendly, patient and so very knowledgeable about Joshua Tree NP. His passion for the land, its history and preservation is evident. We enjoyed our half day hybrid tour of the park with him as our guide, and the booking experience was so friendly, seamless and professional. We loved that we didn’t feel like tourists even though we absolutely were. If you’re interested in exploring Joshua Tree NP, give Wandering Mojave a call.Written February 3, 2024

- anordie0 contributionsFantastic tour of Joshua TreeOur full day tour of Joshua Tree was fantastic. We learned far more than we ever could’ve done on our own. Our guide was well-versed in animal life, plant life, geological events, watersheds, and a lot more. If you want to fully understand the history, and get the maximum amount of knowledge from you visit, you must take a tour with Wandering Mojave. A+!!Written December 3, 2023
- emilyfZ5456JT0 contributionsEpic First Family Back Country Camping TripTravis supported our family to have our first back country camping trip and it was awesome. I don't think we would have spent a full week out without the support he offered, which was very meaningful to our family. He was a great guide and new favorite person of our 5 year old son too. I would totally book another trip with him! Thanks so much <3Written April 25, 2023
- carolcW6374MI0 contributionsGreat trip to a remote areaMy brother and I spent three days with Travis in a remote part of the East Mojave. This was an area that I had long admired and wanted to spend some time exploring it. Travis set up a wonderful base camp and we spent our days walking in the desert looking at cacti, flowers and rocks - all my favorite things to look at. We also did some exploring in the larger area on the drive in and out. Travis has great knowledge of plants and identified them as we walked. Fortunately there were quite a few wildflowers so we had plenty to look at. He is also very good at summarizing geologic concepts and I really appreciated that. I plan to hike with Travis again in the future. I am 76 and my brother is 81 so we are starting to feel that we need a younger person with us in remote areas. Travis fit the bill perfectly!Written March 29, 2023
- CarrieS30 contributionsFabulous HikeMy husband and I scheduled an all day trip in Joshua Tree National Park. Our guide, Travis, was full of information to share with us. He showed us blooming wildflowers, trees, cacti, petroglyphs, birds, insects, and more. We visited the Cottonwood, Porcupine Wash, Challa Garden, and Lost Horse areas. Each of these sites were special in their own way but Travis made sure to avoid crowds. Exploring these sites with him was wonderful and educational, and we learned a lot. The booking process was smooth (prior to our hike) and our questions were answered quickly via email. This company offers a unique, personal service and you will be happy if you chose it to book and plan your hike.Written March 26, 2023

- 717vivienner0 contributionsFabulous day!I had an absolute fantastic day with Hollis! The weather was pretty changeable – blizzards, rain, wind and the odd sunny spell – so she tailored the day to ensure that I still had the best possible desert experience. We couldn’t hike as much so Hollis took me to a number of amazing spots that showed a wide range of terrain and plant life, also stopping whenever I wanted to take pictures. Later in the day, when the weather really turned against us, we visited the incredible Noah Purifoy Foundation of assemblage art, which provided a different, but equally enjoyable, taste of the desert. Hollis is a friendly, fun guide with a wide knowledge of the flora, fauna and geology of the region. She’s a first-class communicator and terrific company! I highly recommend a Wandering Mojave hike.Written March 3, 2023

The entire day was amazing. Our guide Caryn, was knowledgeable and shared fascinating details about the park and it's history. She balanced driving and hiking in the park perfectly, while peppering in details about plant life and geology that brought the entire experience together. I highly recommend Caryn and Wandering Mojave for your day of adventure in Joshua Tree.

I recently returned from my first trip to Joshua Tree and my guided hike with Travis was without a doubt the highlight of my time there!
I booked a half-day hike with the intention of exploring parts of the park that would be otherwise inaccessible to a fairly novice hiker based off the park map alone. Travis was extremely communicative from the beginning of the planning process and throughout the time leading up to our hike. We were able to explore various features of the park such as rock formations, canyons, and even a prime peak for sunrise. Travis has a wealth of knowledge about park history, geographical features, and the numerous flora and fauna within Joshua Tree – I learned SO much!
If you have the time, I recommend booking at least a full day hike, optimally two full days of hiking, so that you can explore different regions of the park since it is quite large. I cannot wait to wander the desert with Travis again at my next Joshua Tree visit!

I cannot argue with that recommendation...two full days of hiking should be a minimum requirement for feeling like one has explored Joshua Tree National Park. Hope you can join me again someday.

Wandering Mojave was a wonderful experience- Travis was very accessible and answered all my questions which put my mind at ease because I was a solo traveler and a little nervous -
Hollis, my guide, was passionate and knowledgable about everything related to our hike and made the 5 hours go by too quickly :)
A great tour guide company and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to explore Joshua Tree National Park

Big thanks to Hollis and Wandering Mojave for an unforgettable experience! Our half-day hike was everything I hoped for—packed with fascinating details about the local flora, fauna, geology, and insights into the traditional owners of the land. The pace was relaxed, allowing plenty of time for questions and soaking in the surroundings. We encountered very few other hikers, making the experience feel truly special. I highly recommend this tour to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the area and a peaceful escape from the crowds.

If I could put 10 stars, I would: our half day starting at 5:30 in the morning, in the parking lot of the hotel, we drove 30 min, to the site of the hike, it ended around 11:30/Noon. Point of Sale, rock-crawling, with Travis our Guide. We discovered all the desert creatures, all the peculiarities of the park, adaptations, rare species to protect. That was great. The hike itself is not very hard, but nevertheless, we went with him outside the feelings, which we had not done on our own, and especially we climbed the rocks for unique viewpoints and a different experience. Travis is super clear, we got it all figured out. We were on a private outing, just the three of us so he adapted to our requests, our pace, our questions. I recommend 200%: do not hesitate to make this trip to see with another eye this beautiful park and all plants and animals!

Our first experience with Travis was on an amazing hike in Pioneertown through the Desert Institute. With friends coming to town from Minnesota, Wandering Mojave, seemed like a no brainer. After filling out a simple questionnaire online, a couple of email exchanges, we settled on a date, a location and any requests. We decided on a Friday afternoon hike out of Pine City Trailhead, which got us up into the Desert Queen Mine. Travis was our guide for a 3 hour tour with two inquisitive kids, ages 11 and 8, who had never been to the desert before.
Travis was an amazing source of knowledge; from the history of the area, plant life, geology, erosion, among other things. Travis answered any and all questions that came up and wasn't afraid to say "I don't know, but will look it up." Travis has a very easy going way and was able to keep our Midwestern kiddos engaged for the duration of hike. Will definitely use Wandering Mojave again!!

My wife and I have done several guided day hikes with Travis and Hollis at Wandering Mojave and there is a reason that we keep coming back. The skill and knowledge that Travis and Hollis display about the flora, fauna, and geology of Joshua Tree National Park, and of the Mojave and Colorado deserts, is outstanding. Our hikes with Wandering Mojave have been fun and informative, and we appreciate Wandering Mojave’s commitment to safety, fun, conservation, and proper stewardship of the land. We will keep coming back as we enjoy every aspect of our experiences with Wandering Mojave.

I had the most amazing experience as a first timer in Joshua Tree with Hollis as my guide. We went to Pine City on a relaxing hike and saw Joshua Trees, Pinyon Pines, Junipers, Chollas, wonderful desert barrel cacti to name but a few of the amazing plants. The rock formations were awe inspiring and the view from our lunch break into the Sonoran desert was a highlight. Coming from Europe, it's a landscape and ecosystem I have never experienced before. I cannot wait to return. Hollis is an exceptional guide with deep knowledge and a genuine passion for the environment. Book with Wandering Mojave and get an authentic experience. Thank you Hollis and Travis!

I live in Joshua Tree and with family in town from Oregon, I knew I wanted to treat them to a walk in Mojave. Since our last adventure with Travis, Wandering Mojave Hiking Services has expanded!! He now has a small team of guides and we had the pleasure of having Hollis lead our half day tour.
We met up at the Oasis of Mara visitor center and followed her into JTNP. She selected a valley that was FULL of wildflowers!! Her knowledge base about flowers was impressive...genus and species names, medicinal uses, you name it...geology/rocks too...a desert encyclopedia!! Not to mention the way she managed 2 precocious kids, 8 and 11..she answered questions, got them to think with smiles and laughter the whole time. She encouraged us all to mindfully walk through the desert and treat it with love and respect it deserves. A magical afternoon!!
Thanks so much to Wandering Mojave, simply the best way to see the park!!
