      Rail bikes are fun
We had a great time. The guides were helpful. The scenery was beautiful. The rail bikes were fun to ride. Would do it again.

All aboard for a pleasant ride.
Truly enjoyed this excursion. Exception staff with extra highlights of train songs by the singing conductor. Local history was provided and drinks & snacks could be purchased.

Super fun way to ride through the redwoods and learn about the rail history.
This was a super fun activity. The guides were funny and the route was beautiful. At the end point, there was a beautiful pavilion with a bar, lots of games such as giant jenga and connect 4, and huge fire pits with Adirondack chairs. I’m sure it’s even more beautiful at night. We brought a picnic lunch and bought drinks. There is more than enough time to hike a .9 mile loop that is very well marked and beautiful. We did a Sunday at 10am ride and we’re done around 12:30. The bikes all have power assist, so don’t worry if you have any mobility issues. Give it a try!

      Magical experience
This was an amazing experience! We had so much fun! The train is super cute and comfortable, with a restroom and bar! The ride to and from the bar is just right, not too long. The scenery and redwoods are mystical. You can walk outside to an open car with your drink and your dog! The setting for the bar was fantastic and the music was great! The whole experience was unique and very special. We highly recommend!!!

      Singing Conductor
Wow! What a fabulous experience! We boarded a beautiful and comfortable vintage train in Willits. Our conductor was Matthew and he explained lots of nature and history things. There was also The Singing Conductor who entertained us with railroad songs and even played a haunting flute in The forest when we stopped. There was a snack bar serving both soft drinks and alcoholic beverages as well as Popcorn and other snacks. There were bathrooms on the train and an open air car so we could be outside if we wanted. I highly recommend!

      Great and beautiful ride!
The bikes were great! Comfortable and electric assist. The two guides were great too! Careful to give us a good overview of what we would be doing, Safety talk and fun and enthusiastic! Even provided popcorn and waters in our well for our 50 minute stopover at the top Riding the bikes on the rails gives you an opportunity to spend all your time enjoying the redwoods and beauty without worrying about where you are going. Highly recommend!

Afternoon Pudding Creek Railbike -- a great experience
It's magical to pedal the rail bikes through the forest. They've built a beautiful pavilion at Glen Blair Junction, where we had about a 50 minute stop. We could choose to have a picnic at very nice picnic tables in the covered pavilion (if we packed a picnic!), or hike along the creek or up a trail to a view point, or play games like corn hole or Jenga, while they turned our bikes around. We were a group of 6, in addition to a dog. The dog seemed fine with the trip, a little talking on the way there, more settled on the way back. Each rail bike can choose the level of resistance the riders want when pedaling, making it accessible for a range of abilities. Fun guides! Also, a bag of Skunk Carmel Corn for each rail bike. A great experience.

      Good tour of the redwoods.
This was my second visit to the Skunk Train. The first time was from Fort Bragg, but, decided to do the Willits tour this time. It was a nice ride, and the conductor gave good information about the area along the way. All of the staff were very friendly, and helpful. It was a nice day trip!

      Loved it!!!!
Totally enjoyed this!! Was a great experience!! It’s a must do and one of the best things we did on our trip there! We booked the 10 am train! It was totally fun! I loved how we get a 50 min break and get to hike/chill/ and enjoy the views, our lunch (we brought out own…. There wasa Train with chips and drinks) and there is also a bar…. For drinks…. I got a hot panini from Headlands coffee prior to the bike ride and I was able to place it in the basket on the rail bikes and enjoyed it while we got there ! It was such a good time and got to chit and chat with other couples and families … good times were had by all! Make sure to walk 5 minutes to the hollow tree for pics !!

      Unique excursion
A unique seaside and redwood forest experience. Cruise along on electric assisted bikes - kids and pets allowed! 3 miles into the forest to their junction where yard games, bar, and a warm patio seating greet you. Option to rest here or take a one mile hike through the redwoods. We added the lunch option and they were hearty sandwiches, beverage, chips, all put together in a cute lunch box with souvenirs. Our guides Bruce and Ember were great!

      Pudding Creek Railbike tour
Check-in was easy and timely. Our guide was knowledgeable and helpful. The experience itself was great. Beautiful scenery. Our only issue was that our battery dird on the way back/uphill and the guides are in the feont and back of the line and no one noticed we needed help. Another car behind us helped push us up the hill.

Rail bikes in the morning, Glen Blair Bar at night.
We did the rail bikes in the morning, and then did the train to Glen Blair Bar at night. Each experience was amazing. The staff were wonder & made great tour guides. The only down fall is the price. It’s a bit expensive, so it holds me back from going often or bringing the family. Other than that, it’s an amazing experience.

I booked a steam ride a month ahead. A day after I booked, I requested a change of 1 day, and changed to the other train ride (due to a change in arriving date) .
We were 2 people. There is a 30 dollars difference per ride, so I was supposed to be refunded 60 dollars.
They refused to refund the 60 dollars.
They made me spend it on merchandise I don't need from the store. Now I have a sweatshirt and hat with a Skunk...
I did not buy a last minute ticket.
I didn't cancel, only changed. A day after I first booked.
    And a month ahead!!
And there is no reason in the world not to refund my credit card which I paid with.
I tried talking to the service people at the store, and received a passive aggressive smile, that they are sorry, but can not refund me.
I think this is very bad service. I paid good money and did not expect this to be the way they treat their clients.
    Be carefull.

This review is for the Glen Blair trip to the bar in the woods:
This was a dismal experience from the train station departure onwards for 6 out of town adults looking for fun night described in the promotions. Clearly the locals have claimed this spot for their group outings, leaving no room for visitors. I have taken the Skunk Train before the recent tunnel collapse and it made for a fun afternoon complete with steam locomotive sounds & smells of an era gone by. This modified route is covered in about 15 minutes at a walking pace with a diesel engine. Before the train departs the station, about 50 pedal powered rail runners with 2 people to runner takes off ahead. It soon became apparent that these were all locals who knew they would arrive at the bar in advance of the not so well informed tourists on the train. By the time the train arrived at the bar, all the fire pits and chairs had already been commandeered. There was a long line to a makeshift bar selling bottom shelf booze. My group walked around trying to find an opening to sit down together and in the end found a few unoccupied plastic chairs and we sat in the open by the bar line. We left on the first return train as hundreds more were arriving. This destination is so poorly planned that I would recommend avoiding it. The locals own it. Best to find a nice local restaurant in Mendocino for a fun night out.

Philip, Thank you for your review. We are disappointed that your experience was less than optimal. Can we ask when you rode? There have been some great changes to the Bar over the year. We have listened to some of the earlier reviews and have made changes to the reservations have ensured an experience that isn't impacted by large crowds (locals and/or visitors). We feel sad that you received drinks that didn't fit your taste profile. While we don't have a blender (too noisy!) our well drink list is as strong as any other local bar with well-known brands, canned cocktails, and usually hot toddy or two, and there's always a nice local wine on the list (though usually just one or two brands). We also wanted to ask about the "50 pedal powered rail runners." At no time does our once-a-month Moonlight Railbikes leave before the train, and this is a bespoke experience with only about 12 Railbikes each time and is usually much later in the evening. (https://www.skunktrain.com/railbikes-by-moonlight/) . I hope you get a chance to try it, it's truly a magical event. Thank you for your feedback. We review your suggestions carefully and take them to heart. As our Bar continues to deliver an amazing experience, it is with our guests feedback in mind that we can offer a great product.

My road trip this summer was all about rail bikes and having driven 700 miles to do the Railbikes on the Noyo, at the last minute I just couldn't part with $600 Cdn (they charge singles for both seats, but don't give you the second sandwich). The ticket seller couldn't say what was so marvellous about the ride to justify the preposterous price, and although they forbid dogs, couldn't be bothered to refer me to a doggy daycare. The ticket seller seemed to think I should have made a reservation online in advance despite no mobile data on 99% of the west coast, a tentative travel schedule, and the danger of having your credit card compromised over WiFi. I ended up doing the Pudding Creek outing with my dog, but what a waste of my time.

Extremely disappointed. We mistakenly made the reservation for a week ahead of our intended use date. We realized it when we showed up for the train ride. We were advised they would not modify our ticket’s despite there being plenty of room available. Not only would they not modify the tickets, they would not refund our money or apply the funds already paid to new tickets. Credit only! We had to buy $150.00 in merchandise or loose all our ticket price money.

This is a very unfriendly policy to the consumer. There was absolutely no compromise by the representatives we spoke with.

I will now state my case on every social media outlet I can find, as well as notifying the BBB, the City of Fort Bragg Chamber of Commerce, and the California Department of Tourism. Extremely disappointed in the services provided by the Skunk Train. Yes folks, we were Skunked!

Dear mattl4408DE, We are so sorry that you ran into this situation. I understand that this mix-up happened several months ago and that everything has been fixed at this point. We are glad we were able to work together to get to the bottom of this.

Rail Bike. Its only a 5.5 mile round trip trek. For 2 not so young, older women, it was perfect. It wasn't as far as I'd hoped. It is very pricey too. $250 a bike for 2. The Skunk Train uses same rail. They had a tunnel collapse almost 8 years ago and are still trying to get it up and working again. I would wait till its finished. Maybe 2 years? The guide was great. There is a Walking path all along same route. So if your physically fit, walk it and save yourselves some $.

The ride was a leisurely excursion into some old-grove redwoods along a small creek. Just what we needed for a break on a long car ride day. Really appreciated that our dog could ride too! Fascinating history presented during the ride to the turn-around stop, which had lots of Adirondack chair seating and a deck to enjoy a picnic lunch. The covered and outdoor event area (with fire pit) is spacious. We bought the VIP tickets and enjoyed a great (substantial) turkey and cheese sandwich with chips, (that was packed in a cute commemorative lunch bag cooler with an ice pack), and a drink. Unlimited, free popcorn too. Viewing the surroundings from the open car was fun. Would have loved to have enjoyed walking the trail back into the grove, but being able to walk and then ride another train back wasn't an option the day we went. We were given a quick 25 minutes to eat and/or walk. There's an adjoining train museum, which we didn't get to visit due to time. Very friendly staff. The ride did seem a bit pricey, but no doubt it's expensive to maintain an old railroad, cars and line. I'm glad they continue to maintain this coastal history. Would love to try the rail bikes too, which also accommodates dogs!

I think this is a great idea. I loved the old train. I loved that just enough information was given but not overwhelming. The redwoods were beautiful. The reason I can’t give 5 stars is because you either only get 20 minutes off the train to explore and eat or you stay for 2 hours until the next train. 20 minutes is way too short and 2 hours is too long. If you can push the time limit to 1 hour I think that would work a lot better for most people.

Pudding Creek Express event on the Skunk Train, Fort Bragg, CA

As an almost-retiree this is not an experience I’d recommend to others of similar ilk.

It’s pleasant to ride in a vintage train and open observation platform but the views and exposure to redwoods is limited while dogs, babies and popcorn sales are abundant. We went on a weekday during the school year and were greatly surprised at the number of families with young children on the train.

Short ride, limited views, lots of running up and down the aisles, not recommending this experience.

This was a total waste of money - skip it and head for the Mendocino Botanical Gardens instead. The train ride was 90 minutes but for 20 minutes there's a stop midway where you can take a fast 15 minutes walk on a rather boring trail or hang around on the deck along the train. All the information the loudspeaker tells you - about the history of the Skunk train or the redwood trees - can be gotten in their brochures or on anywebsite about the area. The ride is expensive and not worth it.

We did the Pudding Creek Express trip on June 22, 2023 departing the station at 11:30 am. You go out to the Redwoods area, spend 25 minutes, then ride back. But there is an option to go out at 11:30 and come back on the 2:30 return. We did the VIP option (with a good packed sandwich lunch and chose to stay at the Redwoods site until the later train. We thoroughly enjoyed a short hike through the redwoods and a lunch at the pavilion area provided by the train company.
