    Blue Whale sighting!
Amazing! This was our second time with Cap'n Dave's and will definitely go back next time we're close. They went out of their way to get us up close and personal with a blue whale! It was spectacular! Captain Chuck, Hannah and Will made the trip extra special with their knowledge.

    Fantastic Trip
We took the high speed Zodiac tour with Capt. Dave's. It was an amazing trip! We had Captain Maria and First Mate Hannah. We saw a shark on the way out and then were treated to a pod of what they estimated to be 1,000 common dolphins! They stretched almost from the horizon to the shore! We then got to see a humpback whale spout and fluke three times from about a quarter mile away. On our way back in, we saw a pair of Minke Whales that were swimming in tandem just a few yards from the boat. This is apparently a fairly rare occurrence, since they tend to be solitary creatures. Finally, we did briefly spot a sea lion in the water as we were pulling back into the marina at the end of the sea wall. It did not remain on the surface for long, but did "wave" (extend it's flipper above the surface of the water for a few seconds) after it submerged. Maria and Hannah were fantastic hosts and their knowledge and passion for these denizens of the deep are awe inspiring.

    Amazing trip
Very professional company. We took the high speed zodiac tour with Danny our captain. He was very helpful and professional. We saw a mega pod of dolphins, as well as a humpback and minke whale. We have been on many whale/dolphin trips around the world and this was our favourite. Highly recommend.

    Marie 10 out of 10
We have done dolphin and whale watching before, but never like this. The whole experience was outstanding, the speed of the boat, the amount of dolphins and whales we saw, and the outstanding knowledge, professionalism of Marie made it a definite 10 out of 10. Thank you Marie, you were brilliant.

A WONDERFUL way to cruise the waters of So. Orange County!
This was an INCREDIBLE tour of the Dana Point Harbor. Catered Tacos with a variety of Drinks were offered while you tour the waters. This 2 hour tour has a great Band playing during the tour. You have the option to sit up on the viewing deck or settle into seats with tables downstairs which are guarded from the elements. We will be back next summer for the evening cruise!!!

    Sunset Harbor Dinner Cruise
I have gone out with Capt Dave on a few dolphin/whale tours and it has always been a pleasant experience. I highly recommend all of their tours. We decided to take the Sunset cruise and enjoyed it very much. All the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. They put safety first and are very professional. I have never felt unsafe on any trip and we have always seen dolphins, sometimes whales, sea lions and whatever else shows up. All the boats I have been on were clean and kept in good condition. One of the best parts is the brownie they give you at the end of every tour! It is one of the best I ever had! It is a very memorable experience whatever you do with them!

    So much fun
Very welcoming crew. Even without a whale sighting, my daughter and I loved the outing. The bazillion of dolphins were so entertaining and my husband really appreciated the brownie going away gift that I brought home.

    Overpriced
The entire experience would have been fine if it was half the price. The boat is low budget, the meal was a joke...hamburger, disgusting potato salad, a bag of chips and a packaged brownie as you depart. I don't recommend this for the price ($99.00 with a discount code, normally $149), maybe if it was $39.99/person it would be ok. This not a high end experience by any means.

    We will return again!
We kept an open mind about what we might see and were delighted to be among 3 different types of dolphins. The 3rd type had hundreds of them and they swam alongside the boat while it reach top speed! It was quite thrilling. My husband liked sitting on the very front nose of the zodiac (when permitted) and feeling the wind, sea, and hearing the dolphins "echoaleate."

Another amazing whale watching trip with Captain Dave. Captain Gary and Tood was great and gave us an incredible experience seeing whales, bottlenose and common dolphins. So much fun. Captain Dave is the only way to go.

    Absolutely incredible!
We saw more than 500 dolphins and we were right there in the middle of them! My daughter and I went to the front of the boat for most of the trip, I’m not sure why more people burned out at the bow, it’s definitely the place to be, unless you get seasick. The dolphins were directly under us, directly in front of us, and on both sides, jumping up in pairs and triples sometimes I’m not far from arms reach (not that we were reaching). The crew kept saying it was an “insane“ number of dolphins. Didn’t get to see any wells, but did see a Mola and a group of sea lions. I would totally trust Captain Marie and her associates to find whatever there was to be seen. We were in great hands. We did also go down into the viewing pod, it’s a pretty cramped area and for us it was a better viewing up above.

    Fantastic experience!
Although we did not see any whales, we sailed for about an hour through a pod of dolphins. It felt like we were so close that you could practically touch them. My teenaged grandson was totally fascinated and said it was much better than he expected. He stood on the outside netting practically the whole time and said that now when he sees a boat in the ocean he’ll have a much better idea of what it’s actually like. The crew was terrific and very knowledgeable about marine life; they roamed among the passengers answering any and all questions about the porpoises we were seeing.

Our only choice for dolphin and whale watching
We just completed our 4th or 5th trip with Capt. Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari. No whales this time, but still worth every cent for the outstanding experience. Post Hurricane Hillary we thought we might want to cancel, but beautiful weather was predicted and we're glad we stuck in out. Saw terrific common and bottle nose dolphin including very young "kids" putting on a spectacular show. Great shout out to Captain Chris, 1st Mate Hannah, and wildlife specialist and photographer Stacie. They are a terrific team. Other places we've been to for whale watching has been from Newport Beach, and the Dana Pride. Not bad, but Dolphin Safari just has always upped the game, and really puts the effort and nautical miles into every trip we've been on with them. After our second trip out we decided they would be our only choice going forward. Their photo package of shots taken on the actual trip are just another example of how they excel.

Best thing to do in Orange County!
Captain Marie and First Mate Hannah steered us along for an incredible experience! We saw several species of dolphins in the hundreds, including babies!, and sleepy sea lions on a picture-perfect California day. We got to see various sea birds as well and beautiful views of the California coast. Hannah and Marie were very kind and knowledgable, and cared so much that everyone felt safe and had a great day. Be warned! This particular boat goes fast! It is thrilling, but might not be for everyone. I felt completely safe at all points. Best thing to do in Orange County!

Took the tour on 7/30/2020. Safety was greatly taken into account for covid 19. Saw a few dolphins and a hump back whale. I've taken many whale watching tours which were considerably less cost but chose this one because it advertised a below deck viewing pod. That was unique. I "assumed" it was an area to sit and view under the water however, if you have any type of health issue such as back problems, knees, etc or are clostrophophbic this may not be for you. What it really is is a small hole you have to crawl down into on your hands and knees and get about 2 minutes time to view. You are moving inside so it was troublesome for me to stay still while trying to view. I did get a glimpse of a dolphin though. I should have done my homework for the price difference. Had a good time though and our captain did go miles out of the way so we could see the whale.

Hi, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us. It’s good to read that you were satisfied with our health and safety measures, and that you had fun getting up-close sightings of the beautiful wild dolphins, along with a magnificent Humpback Whale! I’m so sorry that our Underwater Viewing Pods did not meet your expectations. While not huge, the pods are more than just a small hole. They are special compartments built into the underside of each of the hulls on our catamaran Manute’a; about 2 adults or 3 kids can fit at a time. There is cushioned padding on the bottom, and windows on both sides – each pod with 36 square feet of bullet-proof glass from which to view the animals! Once the trip encounters wildlife, our crew opens the hatches to these pods and our guests take turns descending the ladder to enjoy the eye-to-eye perspective of the dolphins and whales. It’s even possible to hear the dolphins’ clicks and whistles! This feature is exclusive to Capt. Dave’s. Ocean conditions and animal encounters can vary so this part of the experience is different for each guest and I’m sorry you were not comfortable during your turn. Is there anything we could do to improve and earn a 5-star review from you next time? Thanks again for your feedback, and we’d love for you to come out on another trip soon.

I got married and brought my bachelorette party out on the Orca private charter. We had Captain Gary. The only down side was that we brought a cooler full of drinks and hardly got a chance to drink any because there was so much action! As soon as we got on our captain told us two whales had be spotted a few miles off coast and he BOOKED it to make sure we caught them!

We ended up following two blue whales for about an hour and they gave us quite the show! Predictably coming up and down together for air. Each time they came up, my breath was taken away! After our time with them he took us over to another blue whale and a couple dolphins, but those whales did not show off for us as much as the first.

They said they don’t often get bachelorette parties, but they totally should!! If you have a party of 6 it doesn’t cost tons more per person to rent the charter. Even if we hadn’t seen any whales, it was such an incredible, intimate experience it was worth every cent.

We did have one person get sea sick off the side of the boat, but even she said it was absolutely worth it!

Oh and the brownies?! Totally worth it!!

The cruise was fun, saw no whales but lots of dolphins. The captain and the guides were very nice. The brownies are amazing. Only thing I was disappointed in, and this is a big deal with Covid being rampant again, is that I booked the cruise because the website said all Covid precautions in place including “ small groups, hand sanitizer and mask required for unvaccinated”. The group on the cruise we took was HUGE no seats left on the boat at all, no hand sanitizer anywhere and there were at least 15 kids under the age of 12 on the boat (meaning too young to be vaccinated) and not a single one with a mask. Since my daughter is immune compromised We need to be very careful which is why I booked with this company and I saw NO Covid precautions at all. Very disappointing since they advertised them on their site. We almost left and asked for a refund but we had driven 2 hours so we wore masks and tried to avoid the kids running all over.

Hi Ms. Nordman, thank you very much for sharing your concerns with us. It’s great to read that you had fun and liked our Captain and crew. However I’m so sorry that you were disappointed with our Covid precautions. Due to California lifting all capacity limits and physical distancing requirements for businesses, we no longer have Covid-related capacity restrictions on our vessels. But all of our safaris have always been uncrowded and each trip aboard Manute’a, the catamaran that you were on, is and always has been limited to 49 passengers. Compared to some other companies and their “cattle boats” with standing room only, this is a small group tour. We also have other vessels that are limited to even fewer passengers. No trip is overcrowded and there is seating for everyone, with opportunities to comfortably view the wildlife from anywhere on the boat. We have aligned with current CDC and CDPH guidelines regarding distancing and masks. We ask our guests to agree that they are either vaccinated or will wear a mask during the trip. We recognize that each individual and family’s situation is unique and there are widely varying viewpoints regarding Covid and masks. It can be a difficult situation for a company to navigate, especially regarding parental rights over what their children are required to do. I am extremely sorry that you felt uncomfortable and that our health and safety measures did not meet your expectations as you were trying to protect your daughter. We have addressed the lack of hand sanitizer with our crew, as there should have been some readily available for you. We do have hand sanitizer gel stations on board, and we have instructed our crew to point those out during the safety speech. There are also hand sanitizer stations available at check-in. In addition, we have clarified our mask policy as it relates to children who cannot yet be vaccinated. We really appreciate your valuable feedback which gives us the opportunity to improve. And we would definitely love to see you and your family again for more amazing marine wildlife sightings!

The morning was glorious! Coming at the end of Grey whale migration season, we didn’t expect such a treat. Capitan took us up alongside a mother and calf who were hugging the shore at Three Arch Bay, then we got a tip about three fin whales about 5 miles out. The fin whales were courting and so stayed at the surface interacting with each other for a good spell, including spinning in the water right at the surface. On our way back in we ran with the dolphins who played under and around the catamaran right in front of the bow where we all gathered. Everyone was thrilled, from our teenage boys to our grandparents and our out of town guests who had never seen a whale before. The private charter made all the difference in terms of our party feeling comfortable getting out on the water while still navigating the pandemic. Captain and first mate exuded competence and were long experienced with the vessel. We truly made life long memories this morning, it was an experience that helped restore our faith in the interconnectedness of all life and the importance of our work to protect it. Thank you.

We decided to go whale watching in February because the whales seem to be in the area. Captain Marie and her crew did a wonderful job of finding some gray whales that we could accompany for a short while. Every time they neared the surface of the water, we were told to keep looking in a certain direction. Sure enough, we got to see the amazing sight and were particularly pleased every time we got to see the fluke. We got just the right amount of information about marine life in general. When we neared a mom and baby gray whale, the crew made sure not to crowd them but still to give us an opportunity to see them. It was a wonderful excursion. I'm sure we will do this again.

We did see one gray whale but not a single dolphin! They post a board where they show how many of each they see on a given day. One day this week, they saw 300 dolphins and yesterday we couldn't find one! Perhaps this is normal this time of year. Also..it was freezing. listen to them when they say it is 15 colder out at sea or you will freeze. Disappointing experience overall.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to share your concerns with us. I’m so sorry that you thought the trip rated only 2 stars! I’m happy to read that you did have an exciting encounter with a magnificent migrating Gray Whale, but we definitely understand the frustration about the lack of dolphin sightings. We would love for every trip to experience the magic of being so up-close with the beautiful wild dolphins, but as it is wildlife, we just can’t guarantee that. I’m sorry you felt uncomfortable during the trip. We always recommend for our guests to layer their clothing and bring at least a jacket or a sweatshirt, since it’s always cooler out on the water. Thank you for choosing Capt. Dave’s. Remember, now that you are part of our Dolphin Safari family, you get a special discount on future trips - I hope you will consider joining us again so we can have a second chance to show you the delightful dolphins!

My 8 year old and I decided last minute to go whale watching. We were lucky to have found 2 spots on a 2pm trip. The crew was awesome and the captains went extra far into the ocean to find the fin whales that had been spotted earlier. After some searching we found them and they were simply amazing! I was pleased that the crew had masks on the whole time and asked everyone to keep their masks on. On the way back we saw a beautiful pod of dolphins. Attentive crew, great boat plus a delicious brownie at the end. Thank you, Capt. Dave's - we'll be back!

My sister has lived in the area for 20 years and I’ve been visiting for 8 weeks, and we wanted to do something new. We decided to try the whale watching excursion.
First of all, my sister inadvertently booked for the wrong date. She called the company and someone was actually in the office at 5:00 pm and graciously changed the reservation to the correct date.
We arrived early as instructed and checked in. The number of patrons allowed for adequate social distancing. The crew was fantastic. We saw whales, dolphins and sea lions. It was a wonderful 2-hour trip.
The boat sold snacks and beverages. Had a bathroom. Offered shard for those who don’t want to sit on the front of the boat.
Great trip and I’d highly recommend it.

took the larger boat on a girls trip. The guides and boat operators communicate with other boats in the area to try and get to the sightings. We saw an incredible pod of common dolphins and cruised with them for quite awhile. There were several hundred. There was report of a whale sighting and after going to that coordinate we cruised for a long time but never saw it. The captain and guides are excellent in narrating and providing information throughout the trip. They are very good at giving you the best possible experience for your money. Would highly recommend.

We were looking forward to taking this adventure but due to the stay at home order in California we cancelled our trip. I would have thought that Captain Dave's would be alittle more reasonable and refunded our 137.00. BUT NO. Just a voucher for future tickets. If we lived in California, fortunately we dont , it would be acceptable. Given we live in Nebraska and dont get to Los Angeles regularly more consideration should be given other than such a strict no refund policy. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!

Hi, thank you for taking the time to let us know about your concerns. I’m so sorry you won’t be able to join us as planned for an exciting dolphin and whale watching safari! At this time, Southern California and Dana Point are not under any stay-at-home orders. If and when that occurs, to promote and protect the physical and mental well-being of people in California, outdoor recreation facilities may continue to operate as per the Governor's orders. With that in mind we plan to continue operating cruises in a safe manner, as we have done since the beginning of the pandemic. We do encourage all guests to read our cancellation policy and to contact us with any questions prior to booking. Please remember that your vouchers do not expire, and they can be redeemed for any future date. We’d love to see you and share some amazing marine wildlife sightings with you!
