About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Wombling_Free_75480 contributionsFunicular funExcellent funicular, has a curve in the track which is unusual. Decent length of ride. Runs frequently. And saves you having to walk up a steep hill.Written October 4, 2023
- VadimM670 contributionsOne way Up is better. This funicular has been operating at Cape Point since 1996. Round trip fare will cost 75 rand, one way 50 rand. The funicular ascent will save you energy because after arrival you will still have to go. Like many tourists, I used it only for climbing down with my feet. The descent is short and simple.Written October 27, 2022
- Escape597852479330 contributionsSo good! 👌My girlfriend headed out to Cape Point and took the Flying Dutchman to the peak before walking back down and around the reserve. Amazing experience with breath taking views - I’d thoroughly recommend for anyone visiting Cape Town.Written March 30, 2022
- munird20140 contributionsQuick ride to the topThe FD Funicular provides a comfortable ride to the top scnic areas at Cape Point. The ride does not offer any great panaromic views but it enables visitors to go to the top in comfort to enjoy the majestic views from the there and near the light house. Some people decide to walk up. The walk up is also good but this takes about 15 minutes of uphill walking which should be okay for most people but not to those who get breathless fast. Walking up enables one to enjoy views during different sections of the climb. To save time I do recommend the Funicular but if time is not an issue do try to walk up and down. - Pete-n-Suzie0 contributionsHad to be DoneWe walked up to the lighthouse as we felt we should but as this is the only funicular railway in Africa felt that we should ride down. Pleasant enough but one way is expensive.Written March 26, 2020
- FraBo590 contributionsGreat way to go up on a hot dayWe visited cap of god hope on a very hot day and were very thankful that we could use the funicular. It´s an easy way to go up, you have some nice views additionaly and you save a lot of energy. We would use it again, if we´d come there again.Written March 23, 2020
- julienetsteph0 contributionsThe perfect way to reach Cape pointThe funicular is the perfect way to reach Cape Point and enjoy the view and the old lighthouse. Do not hesitate to go up with the funicular because you need to walk longer to reach the new lighthouse when you arrived at the summit of the Flying Dutchman FunicularWritten March 20, 2020
- Wanderthisworld3600 contributionsSomething different. After walking the equivalent of 19 flights of stairs, I was ready for a break and truly appreciated the funicular. It's a quick ride up and down and gets you to the gift shop and toilets without a sweat.Written March 15, 2020
- keithamara0 contributionsWorth the money unless you are energeticThe funicular is a good way to get to Cape Point from the end of the road. If you want you can get the funicular up and walk back down enjoying the views.Written February 25, 2020
- crunchie30 contributionsTrip to The TopA nice easy way to get to the top of cape point, worth the fare for the view from the top to see the tip of South AfricaWritten February 23, 2020
- Geordie0080 contributionsTrip to the peak of Cape PointWell worth the trip on this funicular railway and then walk a 100 steps more to see where the Atlantic Ocean meets the warm currents from the Indian Ocean. Get there early to avoid the coach toursWritten February 17, 2020
- PeterD2180 contributionsNo sweatFor 5 €, you have a return ticket. No sweat, no stress. Just ask if they are not going to cut the power while you're up...Written February 5, 2020
- Nykkyl0 contributionsFlying DutchmanWe took the flying dutchman as we didn't want to get sweaty for our flight later that day. It was a short but fun ride up. We were fortuniate to beat the crowds so no waits up or down. Highly recomend going early.Written February 2, 2020
- Alice M0 contributionsFun rideAlso the quickest way up! I was very happy to take the funicular both up and down the very large and steep hill to the lighthouse. There is still a walk when you get up there, but I recommend taking a ride!Written January 25, 2020
- hristopher J0 contributionsThis is the quick way!To get up to Cape Point you can walk up the hill or take the funicular carriage - probably best way to do it! It is inexpensive and quite an experience - it is quite small so choose early times to avoid queuesWritten January 11, 2020

Service at the ticket office could be better but the price is ok at R75 or c £5 return. It runs c every 5 minutes and does save you a sharp uphill walk - simple as that.
The views at the top do give you a different and probably better perspective of some of the truly spectacular views than the ones you get at 'base camp' - the car park and shops. In particular you get wonderful views of the absolutely mesmerising Dias beach and over to Cape of Good Hope. It can be very windy up here.
In summary it is well worth doing simply to get the views at the top. As an attraction in itself it is not surprisingly functional but it does the job.

Still quite a few steps to climb to get to the lighthouse so why not take the funicular. Return ticket only marginally more than single. Shame the mist rolled in when we got there but difficult to plan for when taking a day trip from cape town

Funicular was quick ride to the top versus walking up, queues were also quick, sanitized for Ned group max 10. Lovely experience likely to do it again

Pensioners get discount, frequent, quick and comfortable. Still a lot of steps and walking if you want to go to the end of the road so it is a good idea to use the funicular for this very steep section.

To reach the old lighthouse there is an uphill road of about 600m, but there is also a funicular, which we took (Flying Dutchman Funicular: adults return 90 rand, children over 6 years 50 rand). It starts from a point next to the restaurant and goes up to the souvenir kiosk near the old 1860 lighthouse, later replaced by a new one built at Dias Point in 1919, because it was often obscured by fog.
At the top of the lighthouse the view of the Cape peninsula is magnificent, the usual photographic shots are a must, at the foot of the lighthouse and with the famous pole with the signs of the kilometers away from the main metropolises of the planet attached. From the foot of the lighthouse you can enjoy a splendid 360° view of the surroundings.
Near the departure of the Funicular there is a large panoramic restaurant, the Two Oceans Restaurant.
