- 190eddieb0 contributionsRecommended tripOn April 11, 2022 we made the Petra Back Trail with this guide. We are quite old and the guide had to adjust his walking pace to us and he did that immediately. He gave more than enough information and the man was extremely friendly and very helpful. During a single difficult passage he kept a close eye on us to make sure that no accidents would happen. As far as we are concerned, this walk and also the guide are highly recommended.Written April 11, 2022

We are family of 4, including two kids- 13 and 8. We only had 1 full day to spend but wanted to cover a lot at Petra: Backdoor Petra, Monastery, High place of sacrifice, Royal tombs, city center, archeological sites and needed an authentic local lunch. Abdullah was ver patient with us, customized the whole trek to minute details and delivered for us memories for a lifetime. Thank you.

Entering Petra via the back route is definitely the way to go. The views along the way are just incredible. It takes around 2 hours and you need a moderate level of fitness, but I'm 71 and certainly not an athlete, and I managed without any trouble. My guide, Abdullah, was the best. He spoke excellent English, is a native of the area and had an extensive knowledge of the history and was very informative and interesting to listen to. He also allowed me to make the hike at my own pace! There are a couple of places along the way where you can rest and have a cup of tea, but make sure you take plenty of water with you anyway.
It's a wonderful sight as you round the bend and see The Monastery. For those who have come the conventional way from the front entrance it's the last building they see and have to climb over 800 steps. Via the back route it's the first building you see and you only have to go down those steps! From there you head towards the front entrance and past all the many other sights, including of course The Treasury, the most famous of all, although The Monastery is actually larger.
I can highly recommend this tour, you won't be disappointed.

Of course, you can just walk around Petra and enjoy this wonder of the world, but if you want to see and hear more details, it is better to take a guide. We had a very good guide with whom we walked around for two days. His name is Abullah. He is a Bedouin, born in one of the caves in Petra. He knows the area very well. Abullah is very patient. He adapts to the pace his guests want. He speaks good English. His sister still lives in one of those caves. We were allowed to drink tea with her. That was very special. Abullah said that he can also arrange for his guests to have lunch with her in the afternoon. There are many (certified) guides in Petra. Abullah is also certified. If you are looking for a good guide, we would definitely recommend Abullah.

Our group unfortunately had a very different and disappointing time with Abdullah. When we first met him he seemed happy and excited to share information with us and then about an hour or so into the day his attitude changed. He offered for us to go to his sisters for lunch and kept mentioning different things we could do with his family. It felt like he was trying to sell us on additional options and then was upset when we declined. He didn't even tell us about Petra being known for it's intricate water systems...we learned that from a video in the visitors center. When we were at lunch we tried asking him questions and he only gave us one word answers. Most of the tour he was walking in front of us and seemed angry. It was really unfortunate because it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and we had a guide who didn't want to speak with us.

I am recommending highly this tour with Abdulah.
He knows perfectly the area as he was born there. He speaks well English and has a real knowledge of this stunning Petra and little Petra : history, architecture etc.
He will be able to take you in places without a lot of tourists. He knows the best picture spots, he can adapt to what you prefer as well.
I truly recommend him!!!!! And next time I am going back with my family I will definitely hire Abdulah again.

Abdullah took me for a hike through the mountains to the monastery entrance at Petra and then all the way to the down to the main entrance. It was a really good hike, great views and the entrance through back makes a lot more sense than going back and forth. There were fewer people and Abdullah went out of his way to make sure I have enough time for pictures. I would definitely go with him again!

Overall, our family of four (two adults and two children) had a good experience with this tour operator. As we learned, Abdullah the proprietor had three tours scheduled for the same day - our tour guide was a freelancer that was hired the day of to cover our tour. He was excellent and made the experience good.
We had some anxiety about the tour, as we were unable to get confirmation from the tour operator the day prior, and the day of, we went to the Petra Visitors' at 0600 (as the Viator ticket directs). After repeated attempts, we were able to get a hold of Abdullah and we were told to come to the Bedouin Village (about 5km distant from the visitors center). As we learned, the Bedouin Village is where the government relocated the bedouin from the Petra Caves. We were told to take a taxi, fortunately we had a rental car and drove to the bedouin village.
We met abdullah and our guide in front of a market (store) in the village, and the four of us climbed into the back of a filthy, dilapidated truck - the passenger side didn't have a door knob so my wife let me in from inside. We were driven to Little Petra (the "back gate" of Petra) and began our hike. Great hike, very scenic and our guide was great - friendly and spoke English well with a good knowledge of the area (he grew up in the immediate area). No tourists on this route - just the four of us and the guide taking in the beauty - we didn't encounter tourists until we hit the monastery - but still not bad given our early start.
We stopped for lunch at a local's home - a clean and well maintained complex of outdoor seating and a large cave with couches and carpet. The lunch was good, a mixture of rice and chicken and served with tea and water. While at lunch, we saw that Abdullah was giving a tour to a couple of tourists, one of whom was asking, "How do we get back to our car?"
That was odd - so I asked our guide . . . how do we get back to our car? As we learned, the tour was one way, and ended at the treasury, we were left to our own devices to find our way back to our vehicle. That would have been no problem had we met in the visitors center. . . but a bit of a problem given that our vehicle was the next town over and we weren't certain where it was exactly. . . I asked the guide to write the address down so we could take a taxi. . .a rather anticlimactic ending.
Petra was incredible - our tour guide was good and made the experience an overall positive one.
I've deducted a star (circle) for two reasons. 1. The logistics challenges at the start and end of the tour. Recommend either updating the meeting point on the viator ticket to the location in the Bedouin village or even better - have the tour guide meet the customers at the Visitors centers after they've received their tickets. Also a tour that ends where it begins is a reasonable expectation - returning the customers to the starting point. 2. Value - at a $120 dollars per person (now apparently its $130) - I'm not sure the value of the experience (the tour not Petra) justifies the price. A word to the wise - arriving early in the morning and hiring a local guide at the visitors center may yield a similar experience with less damage to your pocket book.

Abdulla took us in the outback near Little Petra to enjoy the view and the sunset.
He is a very good cook and prepared a nice diner on a fire.
Outside in nature, with nobody around and being with a local is a nice way to experience the real culture of Jordan.
Thank you for this!

Best tour in Petra ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Abdullah is the best guide in Petra. We did a 6 hours tour through the wonders of Petra, starting from the end (opposite way respect to traditional tours)
He is very prepared and nice (and a very good singer 🙂)
Suggested to all!
