About
We will explore the unknown part of Gjirokaster, the magic of the town that every tourist skips. We start from “Cerciz Topulli Square” and head towards The “Old Bazaar”. It is the first neighborhood outside the castle and lies along beneath the its walls. The characteristic cobblestone the orthodox church and some of the oldest houses are the most beautiful elements. After passing the stream of Nanxa (where they are building a new street), we reach the neighborhood of “Cfaka”. Here we will pass by some first monument category houses, a rebuild mosque and then reach the last neighborhood “Dunavat” where we will find a tekke of the Bektashi Order. It is a beautiful combination of Nature and old houses before arriving to “Ali Pasha Bridge”, a remaining of the aqueduct build more than 200 years ago to bring water to the castle.
It takes approximately 3 hrs and you should be prepared to walk on a not so comfortable terrain. So put on your sneakers and join us to this back in time trip.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- isabelhN1481VB0 contributionsNot worth the money…We had a nice experience beforehand during the wood class. Thanks to the wood master and translator. But we do want to pass on our honest experience to others. The wood workshop is not as described on the website. The class does not last 3 hours but 1.5 hours. This is because the description on the website (sketching, learning technique, completing a final project) was not followed. We were not allowed to choose which object we wanted to make, but were given a small wooden block. We were under the impression that this was for practice, but this turned out to be our final project. After 1.5 hours the atmosphere became a bit uncomfortable and we asked if it was over, which turned out to be the case. The website states that drinks are included, we did not see any drinks. During the workshop we did not dare to say or ask anything about this because it took us all by surprise, as the workshop was a gift from colleagues. The next day we immediately contacted Experience Gjirokaster, unfortunately they blamed us all! We should have asked for drinks, the workshop could have been shorter depending on the number of participants and interest and they did not give anything back about the structure and the non-existent final work. That is why we feel compelled to post an honest review. The workshop is a fun experience but absolutely not worth the money!!!!Written September 7, 2024
- Romy B0 contributionsCosy, wonderful cooking class with our Albanian grandmother! We had a wonderful experience at Marjeta’s. She told us, she was a chef in Gjirokaster in the past, so this makes the cooking even better! Due to this cooking class, we could enjoy some traditional food from the area. We strongly recommend this!!Written September 2, 2024
- MarieW19340 contributionsAmazing experience! This cooking class was great! We didn’t end up going to the originally planned class, but did a class at “friends’ hostel”. The communication with the tour company was great and he even drove us to the new location (since the class was changed). We had a great time and the food was amazing! But the best part was the hospitality of the people there. We were welcomed as family and even had the dinner with the family and learned a lot about food and the community. 10/10 would recommend!Written August 28, 2024
- nicolenP2803QD0 contributionsA must in GjirokasterThe guide was very knowledgable. We had a lot of questions as 2 couples from different backgrounds(Australian and German). We especially lined the peaceful Zekate house and are still a little sorry, that we did not haf the opportunitiy to try the homemade RakeiWritten October 13, 2023

- E1769NUleonardog0 contributionsReally interesting tour and informationIt was a great tour. The guide was amazing, he was born and raised there so he knew every detail of the city and the castle. He had very interesting facts and knew a lot of the historyWritten August 27, 2023
- Adesewa A0 contributionsFantastic beginner's experienceVickor was a great and patient teacher and it was refreshing to see his passion for woodcarving and Gjirokaster show through his work. Experience Gjirokaster were also fantastic at translating and providing more information about the history of Gjirokaster. We would 100% recommend this experience.Written June 15, 2023
- melissahF628FK0 contributionsCooking amazing local food with Marijeta! This was one of the best parts of our 2-week trip in the Balkans! The host, Marijeta is talented and charismatic. Our translator was a brilliant and funny high school student who was very skilled at translating and being in conversation. We do cooking classes in every place we visit and this one was less hands-on than others we’ve done but incredible food and a great vibe overall.Written June 8, 2023
- 450maryamk0 contributionsGreat way to discover Benje and PermetTook a day tour from Gjirokaster to Benjë thermal baths and Permet. Both our driver and the tour guide were super friendly and funny and spoke good English! The drive through the Albanian mountains is absolutely stunning. We had a good amount of time at the baths and were able to explore and find 5 thermal baths by hiking through the canyon. After we stopped for lunch at Trifalia in Permet, where the food was really amazing! You also had the option to explore Permet rather than sit down for lunch but we were hungry so chose to take a longer traditional lunch. Overall everyone at Experience Gjirokaster were super helpful even helping us find a bus the next day to Saranda and booking us other tours. Definitely recommend!Written May 14, 2023
- J7181YGannaw0 contributionsBenjë Day TripWe did a day trip to visit the Benjë thermal baths where we had a great morning exploring around the baths and in the canyon. Our guide even helped us find a more hidden bath which was completely empty. We then went into Permet for a fantastic lunch at Trifilia. The tour was very flexible and accommodating and the scenery was breathtaking. Highly recommend!Written May 13, 2023
- Zac_Andrus0 contributionsStellar TourArli was a great tour guide. Super knowledgeable and had all the local tips. Highly recommend the tour.Written September 10, 2022
- 271kerent0 contributionsCooking classThis experience feels more like a cooking demonstration than a hands on cooking class. It would be better if each person or group of 2 had their own cooking station rather than one cooking station for everyone.Written September 7, 2022
- Hanna S0 contributionsBasically just a castle tourWe had to pay the entree fee on 3 different occasions, saw very little of the city. The guide was very knowledgable though.Written August 27, 2022
- simonkonig0 contributionsMemorable experienceArli was a great English speaking guide. He knows a lot about Gjirocaster, and was very good explaining all of the history of the city and the castle. Will definitely recommend this tour to others, who is seeking to get an authentic experience of this beautiful city and its attractions.Written August 26, 2022

Viki is an excellent guide, knowledgeable, courteous, and tailored the tour according to interests (she is from Gjirokaster). The architecture, history, and scenery are stunning. I can't wait to visit Gjirokaster again!
