I really hate to write this but in order to save someone else the trauma, drama and frustrustration my friend and I experienced, I highly suggest you read this review and choose another tour operator. Do NOT use Route Kilimanjaro!!
The owner Emmanuel requested we pay our deposit in advance, which is normal and to save an additional wire transfer expense, we paid the entire trip 3 months in advance.
Upon arrival at the airport, we were met with a car and Emmanuel said our jeep would be ready the next day. The next day we were told it was still being repaired and would be ready by noon. By 5pm our driver recommended we find another jeep or we wouldn't be able to do the safari.
This began a 2hr stress filled quest to find tiny ATMs which would only allow us to withdraw small sums of money, my bank wanting to freeze my account because of the unusual activity, finding a restaurant with internet to contact the bank, etc, etc, etc. By 7:30pm that night, we had secured a jeep at the cost of $1260.00US CASH, out of pocket!!!! This is the typical price for a jeep.
As everything in Africa is done in cash, we could not get all the money we needed for the jeep and had to use the cash we had brought to do a balloon safari. Needless to say, we didn't get to do that either.
Upon arriving at the 1st park, we learned the park fee had not been paid. Entrance fee? $240.00US and they do not allow tourist to pay the entrance fees-government rules. We spent 2hrs trying to get permission to pay the fee. In the end, the park official took pity on us and allowed us to pay. By now we have missed going to a park the 1st day and due to the time trying to sort this mess out, missed meeting with the Maasai.
After entering the Serengeti, we saw Emmanuel at dinner, who apologized profusely and said going forward we wouldn't have anymore problems. The next day upon leaving the Serengeti, we are told the park fees into/out of the park had not been paid. The cost? $1100.00!!! Again, we are stuck trying to figure out how to pay, park officials won't let us pay and we spent 3 frustrated, crying hours in disbelief that this trip of a lifetime had turned into a nightmare. FINALLY, they too, give in and allow us to pay to leave and again we miss seeing the next park on the itinerary.
When we got ready to leave the hotel the next day, we are told the hotel has not been paid!! That was another $280.00 out of pocket. At this point our driver suggests we not go to the next park as that entrance fee is very expensive and doesn't want us to risk being out more money. This also meant we had to find a local hotel on our own for the night.
During the entire time this is going on, our driver Inno, (who was awesome and our life saver), was in constant communication with Emmanuel trying to get him to pay the park fees, the hotel, etc. Emmanuel is promising the entire time, fees will be paid, as we sit and wait and wait and wait, excuse after excuse, after excuse. I won't go all the other issues we encountered. Suffice it to say, this entire trip was so stressful, aggravating, disappointing, and nothing like what we expected.
In the end, we were out about $3000.00! Emmanuel said he'd meet us at the airport prior to leaving Tanzania with the money to pay us back. That never happened. Upon returning back to the states, we spent months in communication with him, where he asked us to be patient to get us the money. After 4 months of lies and broken promises, we got $500.00. That's it. Very disappointing!
Emmanuel is a crook and a liar and to think he did this to a travel agent! Kinda adds insult to injury. I have never experienced such a disasterous and decitful tour in my lifetime of travels around the world. He left us hanging every step of the way.
Save yourself the agony we went through. DO NOT TRUST WHAT YOU ARE TOLD by anyone at this company. Everyone lies and cannot be trusted. Work with a qualified Travel Agent who has worked with other Safari companies who have a trusted track record. I did my research before signing up with Routes Kilimanjaro and the reviews were good but obviously Emmanuel has since developed financial issues. Everything in Africa works differently. Please be careful!

Hello everybody, we have read this review from the client and would like to apologize for what happened to our esteemed customers. The above clients traveled with our company in October 2019, they arrived at Kilimanjaro International Airport in the morning and they were picked up and transferred in our microvan to the hotel in Arusha for leasure and overnight at the hotel. The second day they were transferred in a microvan too as they were going to Mto wa Mbu village for a local lunch then a visit to the village and then a transfer to the lodge at full board basis. The following day they continued with the trip using a different Jeep as they refused to use the one which have been allocated by our company to do this trip. As they were using different car with different registration number and different tare weight some changes and additional fees was impressed by the authorities as per regulation of the national parks. On the fifth day there was some booking confusion on booking reference including the name this caused a lot of inconvenience upon check out just for that particular single night. The situation got more complicated when the guests refused to proceed to Tarangire for game drive and overnight at the lodge which as per the itinerary.
so honestly they abandoned the booking made
by us and arranged their own booking which they wanted us to pay too. Finally we were able and ready to refund them about $ 2,900 including the compensation for all the inconveniences as we wanted to keep our good name on the public and to our good customers. Unfortunately we didn't come to the agreement as our clients were very annoyed so that pushed the matter beyond our control at that time as well as they wanted us to pay them about $7,000 which we found was a lot. However we then went back on the discussion and agreed to pay $2,900 in installments by February/March $600 was already paid and will continue to wire as soon as the corona outbreak stops and business resumes to the normal situation. So we would like to apologize again and ensure the public that Routes Kilimanjaro Adventures remains to be as honest company and the best Safari company in Tanzania and the entire East Africa's region. Please do not hesitate to book your trip with us, we provide what we always promise. Routes Kilimanjaro Adventures.
