    Great day out
Great time out on lake Kivu early on a Saturday morning. Our guide Yves was friendly and gave us an excellent tour including helping us to spot birds and provide some good local knowledge of the area. Good exercise and a great way for a different perspective on the local area seeing everything from the lake itself. Would highly recommend for a great trip and adventure.

Incredible time on Lake Kivu with Kingfisher Journeys
If you are looking to explore Lake Kivu, look no further than Kingfisher Journeys. I went on their two day kayak trip and could have not asked for a better experience. Leading up to the trip, the team was extremely responsive and helpful in finding the best itinerary for me, and were very understanding and accommodating when I had to switch the departure date last minute. During the trip, Yves served as an excellent guide, giving lots of information about the lake, ensuring our pace was comfortable, and motivating me to our destination. He was extremely professional and made the trip massive fun! The equipment was also great! If you’re looking to spend an afternoon or a few days on the water of beautiful Lake Kivu, Kingfisher Journeys will give you a memorable experience! It was a highlight of my time in Rwanda!! Thanks to the Kingfisher team! :)

    Sunset Kayak on L. Kivu
My husband and I booked a Sunset Kayak for our honeymoon and it was the perfect experience. The weather was warm and sunny. Lake Kivu is beautiful, calm and just serene. We started the trip right on time. Our guide Gracien was nice, easy to talk to and very knowledgeable about the lake and the entire experience. He made everything easy for us. Thankfully it was just the 2 of us and Gracien was kind enough to take our photos with his camera. I strongly recommend KingFisher Journeys for their professionalism and well packaged tours.

Eloi's kayak guide training - simulations on Lake Kivu
I was lucky enough to be part of a group of 5 who were invited to be "clients" for staff training for Eloi as he transitioned from canoe guide to kayak guide on Lake Kivu with Kingfisher Journeys. Steve organized the morning and our group represented the USA, UK, Belgium, Germany, and of course, Rwanda. We spent several hours with Eloi and Steve. Eloi taught us the basics, moved with us in the water, and we were then prompted by Steve to have heart attacks, fall out of our boats, go unconscious, have broken legs, act hysterically, etc. It was great staff training for Eloi so he can conduct safe journeys on Lake Kivu, AND it was a really fun outing for all of us as we got to know each other and gain kayak skills. Lake Kivu is big, clean, beautiful - no crocs or hippos - and a great way to spend the morning. Steve takes training seriously and mentored Eloi through all the prevention, safety and emergency response steps. I highly recommend Kingfisher Journeys. Check them out!

My luxury group of 7 clients who had a night at Volcano Manor lodge for their gorilla trekking during the time of booking, wanted something more crazy for them and adventurous after their gorilla trekking. I told them do not worry, our in safe hands with a professional tour operator, i had to include this canoe on their budget, since they love water activities, they said yes, that would be perfect Fred. Immediately they confirmed their safari. Their gorilla trekking went on well and was amazing, the weather was good. I had booked them on Lake Kivu Gisenyi side, but o chat with agent on the ground, told me its too windy, as it was expected to rain, we had to change them to the river this time. All went well as they expected, they were too happy to have such an adventure with the family all joined this time as the kids never participated on the gorilla trekking being below age requirement. They were like Fred, soon we will be back for this. Their guide Eloi did them the best.

This was all under the management of Rwanda Eco Company and Safari that organised all this. For any more information on this, do not hesitate to contact them.

Loved everything about this trip with Eloi as my guide. The scenery is beautiful and you see the locals working in the fields, the trip was gentle and exciting across little rapids but I felt very safe with Eloi, who was a pleasure to meet and chat to. Would recommend this highly.

We are a family of 4 with boys ages 9 and 11. We all had a wonderful time on this canoe trip. Eloi picked us up promptly at our lodge, he and Willie were super friendly and helpful, the equipment was in excellent condition, and there were people available to help us at every turn. The views as you float along are stunning and it was sun to have the kids running along the shore, following us. We had a great trip and I highly recommend this activity when in Musenze.

Despite it being an overcast and surprising dull day in Rwanda we had the most amazing time canoeing on the river. The guides were excellent. They explained everything clearly and even a novice like myself quickly learnt what we needed to do. You canoe downstream with the current and so it is not to strenuous. It is such a wonderful way to see the countryside as you drift by the fields with the volcanoes in the background. Highly recommend this to any person visiting Rwanda.

We've spent a lovely afternoon on the river Mukungwa with our amazing guide, Yves. The staff gives a very clear briefing at the begining and pays attention to all details and needs all along the way. You'll see plenty of beautiful birds and otters. Relaxing moment not so far from Kigali!

Wow - we don't have enough words to describe how magical this 3 hour trip was. The staff was incredibly professional; our guide, Sharon, was trained in Australia and was fantastic. The river winds through villages and offers up absolutely spectacular vistas. In every way this is as impressive an experience as seeing the primates - it offers an opportunity to see village life while taking in the view!

I had an excellent guide. The river trip down the river was really relaxing and it was lovely to see local people doing their everyday thing, interspersed with some small rapids to make a little excitment. Recommend Crema coffee as well.

There were local children following us along the stream, them on the ground and us on the boat. We felt insecure about this when the guide's boat was away from ours. It ended up as the children throwing rock to us and we couldnt catch them because they ran away. The boat trip itself was fun but there are certain parts the management need to improve on.

With well trained and qualified leaders, Kingfisher Journeys takes safety very seriously. Therefore immediately after receiving this review, we tried to contact the customer who left this review to follow up and find out more details about when the event occurred and what happened. However, as the trip took place some six or seven months ago, we could not identify the customer from their Trip Advisor Profile and they have not replied, so we have been unable to take the investigation into this incident further. Despite this, Kingfisher Journeys has a good relationship with all the local communities who live near the Mukungwa River where we run this canoe trip. We provide jobs for some of them and pay the local farmers to support our guides with safety procedures. Therefore whilst the children do come to watch and run along the river, whilst playful they are never aggressive. Nevertheless we take this seriously and are therefore redoubling our efforts to work with and support the communities. We have discussed this apparent incident with their leaders and community representatives stressing how local people’s friendship and hospitality is well received by the vast majority of our clients. They have been really concerned to hear that some of their own children may throw stones and have assured us that they will use their community networks to stop this rare behaviour entirely. With two guides on the water whenever we have more than six clients, one of our guides is always close by to support our clients. We are sorry if the clients who wrote this review felt let down, however, we are not complacent. Rather we regularly train our staff and work with them to ensue they understand the need to stay close and be on hand to offer support to clients whenever needed. Canoeing the Mukungwa River is one of the most lovely and peaceful experiences in Rwanda and we hope you will come back to enjoy it again. Thank you.

I highly recommend canoeing on the Mukungwa River to anyone coming through Musanze - it’s beautiful! We chose to canoe as a more relaxing activity after hiking Bisoke the day before and it was the perfect choice. For the majority of the trip, the river weaves throughout beautiful, green grass, plants and farming areas. There are two spots, however, that required a bit more focus and attention that our guide coached us through: one was a mini rapid and the other a very narrow part of the river where the current picks up. Everyone in our group - even those for which this was their first time in a canoe - did well.

My friend and me had a really great time canoing on this river !

The trip is really peaceful and let plenty of time to admire the beautiful landscapes and many different kind of birds, and to discuss with our friendly guide and learn a lot from him.

Excitment and fun comes as well, thanks to some more exigeant parts of the river, requirering a bit of skills and waterproof bags to protect the belongings :)
