The train ride was excellent. We rode in Pullman class which was the cheapest. Part of the reason for the lower cost was the train car did not have air conditioning. However, there were ceiling fans and all of the windows were openable and this allowed for a nice breeze and it was very comfortable. There is ice cold water available in every train car as well as a bathroom. There is a Cafe Car where you can get drinks and snacks. Prior to the train ride there was a short (15 minutes) western cowboy show that was very entertaining with funny cowboy actors. Additionally, on the ride each car has a host who gives narration regarding the history of the train, points of interest, and fun corny jokes. Our host, Cassidy was outstanding. There was a cowboy guitarist/singer who was very entertaining and very talented. On the return trip there is a train robbery skit that was a lot of fun. Our group consisted of two adults and our two older children (20 & 21 years of age). We all enjoyed the trip very much and would highly recommend.

After encountering freezing rain & sleet when driving to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, we turned around and decided to try the train ride the next day.

We booked mid level seats and enjoyed the 2 hour+ ride up and the drop-off was right near the Hotel & trail along the rim. We had about 3 hrs to explore, and the video theater that showed history & overview was closed. There was also still snow & ice (near noon) on several of the walkways, and we were very surprised that they hadn't been shoveled for safety sake! We took photos, walked the rim and got 2 brats for lunch with no seating except a few park benches (which were full).

The ride home seemed forever, but it was an OK experience. They had a musician playing guitar each way, and the train was robbed on the way back by bandits (with a hat for $$ or valuables) which thrilled the kids onboard. Staff on the train was helpful & fun and both the engineer & fire-person were female & running the train! The only one in USA with both ladies in the engine compartment!

We love this service to GCNP! We booked the observation dome to the park and pullman from the park. The dome provided a great view of the ever changing landscape. The seats were like tour bus seats without the recline. All faced front. It’s a relatively small but comfortable space. Thankfully there were no annoying patrons or the two hours would have been a nightmare. The “buffet” provided was mini muffins, danishes, bananas and apples. Soft drinks, coffee, and tea were available at no charge. Alcohol could be purchased. There was a singer on board who was great, but honestly, that space is too small for additional people or music. It was air conditioned. I would recommend doing the dome at least once. The Pullman car was a completely different experience. It was loud, breezy, and the seats were well worn bench seats. There were no complimentary snacks, but the cafe car was the next car away. You could really hear and feel the train from these seats, as it is an open air car. Although it was much louder than the dome, everyone was very respectful and seemed to be having a great time. I would recommend the Pullman if you don’t mind the breeze and noise. Two very different experiences but both enjoyable. The staff on board were great. Very friendly. Our Pullman host Moffitt was extremely knowledgeable about trains and you could tell really enjoyed working there. We could have done without the train “robbery” at the end, but it didn’t ruin our trip. This was definitely a no hassle way to travel to the GCNP. Would do it again!

The train is not worth the fare, it’s a nutty 4 hours for a 1 hour trip where your going to be asked where you’re from no less than 10 times by all the train staff.

The bar is HIGHLY encouraged by train staff making the 4 hours an adult party bar… and the drunk adults were embarrassing.

I honestly thought this would be a fun learning experience, instead I was on a very slow party bus

I want to first be clear that the ride was nice, nothing terrible about it, it just was far less than the expectations they set at booking, online, and other reviews here.

All of the reviews set such high expectations for this trip. We were unfortunately poorly disappointed. The staff was very friendly, but we really had no roving musicians or entertainment until the last 10 minutes or so of the 2 hour trip, despite that being the main selling point for us doing this trip instead of driving.

The agent that booked us boasted about the grand ponderosa trees we'd see from the dome car. We didn't realize we were in the ponderosa landscape until the announcer told us we were leaving the ponderosa's and entering the Junipers. They were lackluster either way. Nothing too grand about them. (Though there were some entering the park that were cool, though no one on the train pointed them out to us.

The complimentary snack bar was a nice treat but really didn't make up for all the disappointment of the long slow journey. Of course, we knew it would be a two hour ride, but our expectations were set for great scenery and entertainment along the way which we did not get.

The agent that booked us did advise that the dome car was the only available seating for the trip and we paid the exorbitant uncharge for the four of us to sit up there (over $800 for the round trip). I of course didn't experience the ride from any of the other seats, but I would never recommend anyone pay the additional price for the dome.

I feel terrible because everyone really was so nice and seemed to be so happy to do their jobs. I don't know if we got some bad version of what we were supposed to...?

What a fun day it was!
It was pouring down that morning and we ended up buying a couple of raincoats in the gift shop.
Before the train leaves they are doing a Wild West shootout; it was fun, hokey and the actors were very hard to understand.
Boarding the train was quick and easy; we had splurged on the dome car and loved it. Madison, our tour guide was funny and knowledgeable and we enjoyed listening to her. She was also an excellent bar tender.
They served some snacks (yoghurt and muffins) on the to the GC and cheese, salami and crackers coming back. Very nice.
During our trip the sun came came out and we were able to enjoy this magnificent canyon...but the rain came back in for of a thunderstorm and it was quite an awesome experience.
They have some entertainment in form of guitar players coming through each car and we enjoyed singing along. The people in our car were super fun and everyone was talking to others. We had a 'train robbery' (the same actors that do the shootout in the morning; we could do without this.
Parking at the depot is plenty and free.
We think it was money well spent (yes, the dome car is expensive!) and it was on our bucket list.

This historic railway makes its daily round-trip journey from the tiny town of Williams, and travels 65 miles to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The slow speed of the train allows the passengers to enjoy the scenery outside. The train and the Station were very clean, and masks were required throughout the trip.

We arrived at the Station an hour before departure. That gave us time to find parking, browse around in the gift shop for unique gifts and Christmas Ornaments, plus witness a silly, but cute, Wild- West Show before boarding. En route, there was a guitarist and singer for live entertainment, and a faux robbery with bandits on horseback, who stopped the train and “robbed” us on the return journey.

It was a good way for tourists like us to visit the Grand Canyon from Flagstaff, and leave the “driving” to someone else. At the Grand Canyon itself, we had ample time to hike the “Trail of Time” trail and have a quick lunch before returning to our seats on the train.

The day’s outing was worth our time and the money we spent on it. We had a lot of fun, and we recommend it to other travelers who love historic trains such as these.

This is not going to change your life, but was a great way to spend the day. The train leaves exactly on time in the morning, takes 2h 15m to get to the South Rim; You have 3 hours on your own to view the canyon, visit the exhibits and shop. It was pricey ($350 for 2 adults & a 13-y-old), but way better than driving to the same location. I’m jealous of the reviewers who had folks giving them history or folklore or pointing things out or making any other interesting contribution to the experience. We did not get that. The staff was very nice and helpful, though. The observation car was great, but only needed to be done one way. Save a buck and take a cheaper seat going the other way. Seeing the thrill of small children just being on a train, and getting “robbed” (a fun way to tip the staff!), was delightful.

One unresolved problem: My credit card was overcharged. When I made the reservation & authorized the charge, I was told $301; My card was charged $350.00. There is no itemization anywhere of what each ticket cost or what tax there was, so I do not know what the line-item error was. I immediately emailed the contact address when the charge showed up on my online account view, but a day later, there’s no response.

My wife and I took the train as a relaxing way to get the canyon and weren’t disappointed.

We had tickets in the dome car in both directions and were under the care of Conya Rae, our Passenger Service Attendant. She did a lovely job of pointing out sites along with the way and sharing history of the train, northern Arizona, and the local area.

Along the way we had musicians who came through the car, a different one in each direction. Both were good, the one on our return was more to our liking but both were solid musicians.

You have about 3 hours at the canyon which was enough for us. We were able to walk the 1.5 miles to Yavapai Point and back with no trouble, taking plenty of time to sit and enjoy the view all along the way.

There’s not a lot of food options, so bring some with you. That is something I wish we had done differently. The restaurants that are there require reservations that are booked well in advance.

The train, when not in pandemic times, seats over 1000 passengers, but they told us that we were at about 1/3 capacity. I felt they did a good job keeping people distanced and cleaning things and wasn’t at all uncomfortable. Though it might be noted that many folks were openly sharing their vaccination status, which may be the new norm.

It is not a quick ride but it forces you to slow down, which I found wonderfully helpful.

You can take the train up and stay the night at a lodge in the park. They will transfer your luggage. We did not do that, but it seemed an equally popular option to the day trippers.

I recently took a ride on the Grand Canyon Railway as a part of a tour package. At first, it sounded like a great addition to the itinerary. However, very quickly I realized it was not what I had pictured in my mind. I think most people imagine they will see scenery along the route to the canyon. This is definitely not the case. There really is nothing to look at. The car attendants, however, did attempt to point out items of interest along the way and speak about various things to keep us entertained. The worst part about the ride was the "entertainment" on board. When I read there would be entertainment, I assumed a guitar player/singer. However, these folks also attempted to be stand up comedians and did not do a very good job. The jokes and the carrying on became a bit much. I would have preferred to just have the train ride with nothing for entertainment or possibly just guitar playing/singing. After their performance, these folks then paraded through the train cars speaking to each couple/person, most likely searching for tips. I think this would be ok for a family with small kids, but for adults it's really a bit much.
