About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Departure3127610 contributionsEducational and extraordinary. Our guide was great. Explained a lot about the Native American culture and customs. He knew a tremendous amount of history about the geology of the area. He was enthusiastic without being over the top. He was genuinely excited to show us the canyon for our very first time.Written September 12, 2024
- joancR115MR0 contributionsFirst of many Cross Country TripsAl was our tour guide! He was extremely communicative - very prompt- and informative! He explained not only the history along the drive but pointed out beautiful spots along the way to photograph. His stories were entertaining and he was very patient with our group and our needs as far as restroom breaks went too! The trip was worth it, The Canyon X was breath taking - Horseshoe Bend was beautiful- Tour was an all day excursion but not necessarily 12 full hours , depends where you start i guess .. definitely an enjoyable full day for our family and well worth it.Written September 12, 2024
- patbrookman0 contributionsHighly recommend this tour!I'm so glad we opted to do this tour for our 1st visit to the Grand Canyon. Communication was great, and our tour guide, Stanton, was very punctual. It was such a convenience getting picked up from and dropped back off at our hotel. Stanton was very personable and knowledgeable. We got to see so many cool and amazing places and views. I highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting for the 1st time!Written September 9, 2024

Shared her love and respect of aVan ride uncomfortable in the last back bench seats for 3 seniors. Too much information of Cat's personal life was shared. - Tour414983973120 contributionsDay trip out of Sedona...Really enjoyed it. Would have liked to stay a bit longer at Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monument, and maybe one stop less at Grand Canyon, but overall, it was a great experience. Jason, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and provided great context for each location. Definitely would recommend the excursion if it's your 1st time to the area and you want to take in key sites within a day.Written September 4, 2024

- lovebaskets0 contributionsGreat tour to Grand CanyonThis tour was wonderful. Rasa was our tour guide and he did a great job ensuring we saw everything that was part of our itinerary and allowed us enough time at all the different stops. He even was kind enough to take our picture at each stop. He shared his knowledge of the history of each site and made our day enjoyable. We even had a hot lunch on an Indian reservation that was delicious and was provided cold water throughout the day. I’m so thankful we chose this tour and were lucky enough to have Rasa as our guide. This is the tour to book.Written August 20, 2024

Great way to visit the canyon. Train departs Williams,Az .Williams...which has multiple motels, saloons, mini museums, fast food, a pub or two.
The coaches are comfortable (not crowded) cars with reclinable seats, largely refurbished from old east and west coast trains. Big picture windows. First class offers snacks and water/soft drinks gratis; cocktails are for sale. Each car has a host/hostess/comedian/guide to describe the views and point out the flora and fauna along the way. Our guide was entertaining, knowledgable about the scenery and the Canyon itself.
The trip's about 2.5 hours up to the canyon climbing from the prairie and ranch land through the Kaibab forest to the Canyon rim. We saw herds of elk, plentiful cows, and wild mustangs racing the train. First class featured several troubadors serenading the guests with mainly western/cowboys songs, and we were visited by several surprise visitors as well.
The train stops at the Canyon depot which is just steps from the rim. Passengers are encouraged to leave unneeded clothes/back packs etc on the train while visiting the canyon (3 hours) as the cars are locked and secured.
We journeyed up and back same day.
Train leaves at 9:30am (following a short wild west show at the depot) and returns at 5:30pm. Price depends upon the level of service (coach, first class, VIP).
Parking at the Williams station is free. Order tickets by phone or on line.

I unknowingly did not book a round trip ticket on the train and that was a very happy accident. Jr. The express driver was fun and knowledgeable and made the trip memorable for all of us. We got a great experience at the Grand Canyon without dealing with the majority of the crowds. I highly recommend taking the tour and if you get a chance to request an express driver ask them for Jr..

This was a great full day tour - 11 hours in total.
The train ride is just a couple of hours and managed by a different company, but a lovely way to arrive at the canyon.
Our driver and guide, Steve, was fabulous. He took really good care of us and was a mine of information, a very experienced guide.
The description of this tour is confusing, as it's mostly travelling by road, but nonetheless I would recommend it as a really good day out. Lunch is not included, so bring your own or buy it along the way.

We stayed 2-nights at the Grand Canyon hotel and took the train to the Grand Canyon. All of he 'characters' that were involved with the railroad made it so much more enjoyable to ride the train. We also took the bus tour and lunch when we got to the Grand Canyon and that was so much nicer compared to walking around on my own with only limited access to the edge of the Grand Canyon. The train ride was comfortable, educational and enjoyable and I'd highly recommend it to young and old.

The trip and the tour were fantastic the train ride was long but it was worth the ride. Make sure you watch the time carefully when waiting for the train or at a popular tourist attraction to avoid missing your train or delaying your tour. All the gift shops had a variety of merch as well as snacks and other amenities. Missing anything wasn’t a problem for our party of three thanks to Al. Al might as well be named the greatest tour guide of the modern age. Throughout our tour Al accommodated our crew with a sample of his surplus of knowledge and not only kept us entertained but educated us throughout our tour. When stops were made he helped us maximize our time together through giving us fantastic advice on where to go and also played a role as a great photographer during the trip.

Train ride was smooth. Not much interesting terrain to view. Too much distraction on the train to enjoy the sparse view anyway. It was more like an entertainment trip with very sub-par entertainment. The write up said the trip would be on a train that had been in operation since 1901. I asked about that because the train cars were not that old. She said they started laying the tracks in 1901 but the train cars were built around 1945. The train did have 1 car though that she said was built in 1923. Also, the trip is one-way on the train. A van takes you back.

Our favorite part was not the train ride. That was the least favorite part. The description of this activity was totally miss leading in a good way. Before the trip we expected a 10 hour train ride from a starting point to the Grand Canyon and back. What we actually got was a bus ride with a very interesting tour guide to the train station in Willians (not Sedona). Then we got a 2.25 hour boring train ride to the Grand Canyon with lack luster views (a 2 second view of the Grand Canyon). Then we were picked back up in the Grand Canyon by our tour guide and taken to lunch for an hour. It was an awesome lunch at a in park restaurant. Then for the next three hours we were taken to fantastic photos spots on the South Rim. Our tour guide gave us the inside information on how to get the best shots and views. Another couple on our bus didn’t do the train ride and got to have the whole day with the tour guide.

The train ride was very good. Everything was very organized, and we knew what to do every step of the way. The train ride was only part of the tour though. We took the van to the train station and then took the train to the Grand Canyon. After we arrived at the Grand Canyon, we continued our tour via tour van.
Regarding the train ride, there is a big difference between the regular train car and the upgraded car that we took. (We were not allowed into the luxury car so I can't comment on that one.) The regular train car had bench seats and the car was very old (about 100 years old). The upgraded car had snacks, individual seats and restrooms. All cars had entertainment though. I was glad we upgraded.
Van tour was very detailed and we made may stops to take in the changing scenery.

Just an awesome experience! The train ride was relaxing and fun. Our tour guide Al was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable and kept us entertained with stories about the local culture, history and geology. He took us through the Grand canyon and we had plenty of time to enjoy the view and take pictures. There are no words to describe the views of course!!! I highly recommend this tour! It's especially nice if you don't want to drive and find parking.

A coworker and I signed up for the railroad and Grand Canyon tour. My impression of the listing was that it would be a railroad ride to the canyon, a tour, then a return trip. That isn’t the case. A tour van picked us up at a hotel and drove us to the canyon. I regret that I forgot her name, but she was amazing. She had in-depth geological knowledge and took us to her favorite spots. Then we had our choice of lunch locations and time to explore on our own in the area near the railroad. She gave us our tickets before lunch so all we had to do was board the train.
This was my first train ride. I was super excited. The train goes slower than I expected and honestly there isn’t a ton to see as far as scenery. There was a mock robbery which was cute, and a musician which was very good. The downside, was that apparently others had ridden the train both ways and the ‘conductor’ kept referring to things which had been discussed on the way to the Canyon. For those of us who didn’t ride both ways we had no idea what he was referencing. He did give several handouts out, which was a nice touch.
I’d recommend the tour portion, but almost think the train could be skipped.

Are there any openings May 21st or 22nd for two people from Dallas?

When the train arrives at the Grand Canyon, do we transfer to a van or remain on the train? Do we need to book a separate tour of the canyon? Or Are we on our own?
Written November 8, 2020
I saw in the reviews there is a premium cabin, how do you upgrade?
Written January 11, 2020
We rode in the luxury parlor car and for us it was totally worth the money. The seats were really comfortable there was food and drink available and even a bar if you needed it. We were able to walk to the back of the train and look out while standing On the back porch of the train. Of course we were not traveling with children and children under a certain age are not allowed in those cars. Just as an FYI we had booked a coach tour once we got to the Grand Canyon with lunch and the lunch was really not worth it especially after the large meals at the Grand Canyon hotel

This excursion was more than just the train ride actually. It was a van with a tour guide also. The train was only 2.5 hrs at most. They are out of Sedona I believe but did pick me up in Flagstaff. I would call and find out where they could pick you up. The van portion is well worth it!

Not sure how far Sedona is from Williams. The train departs and returns to Williams. There are nice hotels and restaurants in Williams.

Do you have to return the same day or can you get a room at the Maswik Lodge for a few days and then return to Williams.
Written January 29, 2019
Yes, there is a restroom on every car.

Hi Good evening, was wondering if you had a list of hotels you pick up from in flagstaff? We are looking to take the tour and are not sure which hotels are within your pick up. If you can kindly advise. Thank you and best regards, Stephanie
