The train tells a story and stands for the history of ushuaia. It’s a short trip but the views are great. On headphones they tell you the story of the prisoners in the city and on the way back they tell you about the National Park. We had the best experience

There are a lot of mixed reviews on here and I honestly feel the train exceeded my expectations.
Take a taxi from Ushuaia to the National park (about 20 mins $600 pesos).
You have to buy a train ticket and a ticket for the National park when you get there.
There’s not much at the station itself except an obligatory photo shoot with one of the ‘prisoners’.
The train didn’t leave on time but it was perfectly fine. Views are incredible. The carriages are small with big windows so you can see everything.
The train stopped for a few minutes by a waterfall and we all got off to take photos.
The train is slow and the onboard commentary is really informative about the lives of the prisoners.
We came straight back on the same train because it was the last one of the day but you can walk around the National park and get the next one back if you’re earlier than we were.
The train is quicker going back with another commentary about the National park.
There were taxis waiting to take you back into Ushuaia.
A pleasant afternoon.

The trip was fine and we wouldn't change going on it, but there are a few things we wish we'd known.
1) You have to take a taxi to the train station. It cost us 560 pesos for the 10 minute ride.
2) The ticket says to arrive 30 minutes early and you definitely should but don't expect it to leave on time. We had to wait in a very long and slow line to exchange the voucher for tickets. Honestly, you're probably just as well to wait in the line for the actual tickets once you get there.
3) The train is very slow and stops in the middle so you can "view waterfalls" (AKA pay for the cheesy mandatory photos you take with an inmate before you're allowed to board).
4) The train drops you off in the middle of nowhere! Everyone else on board was on a tour, so got into buses or returned with the train back. It was only 1.5 km down the road to the post office and start of the Costanera Trail, so that worked out for us, bit if you're not into walking, you should have another plan or get to the park another way.
5) Because the station is in the middle of the park, it's also not convenient to get back for the return trains. Also... it's a long slow train and we really didn't want to take it again... and then pay for another taxi. We ended up hiking to the end of Hwy 3 and catching a minibus from the station there for 300 pesos each instead (the mini buses cost 600 pesos roundtrip... the driver tried to charge us the full RT fare but we negotiated for half price for half a ride quite easily).

We had a wonderful day and did really enjoy the train and the historical information provided. It's much more scenic than the minibus route.

Nikki McGregory, Owner of Nik of Time Travel. We Had just came off on an amazing Antarctica Cruise and had about 8 hours to kill before our flight so this looked like the thing to do! So we catch the 1200 train. We love the best of everything so of course we wanted to VIP treatment that came with food and 3 drinks of our choosing. We had the front car to ourselves. It was a nice leisurely train ride. Cool experience. Great way to end our last day in Argentina.

Fast forward to when we get home and check out credit card statements.

We were charged $125 per person instead of the $62-65 we were quoted at the window by the last ticketing agent on the right.

I reached out to management and they were not willing to budge or reimburse us any money. No way was that experience worth $125.00 for 3 Empanadas, individual bottle of wine, soda and water.
We would have just stayed in Genpop if that was the case.

Don't do VIP if you do go. It's a total rip off.

We purchased a return ticket for the Train, which only runs for approximately 7 kms into the Tierra del Fuego National Park, lasting 50 minutes including 1 stop to see an unimpressive waterfall. The destination is in the middle of nowhere, and you stop for 10 minutes before returning. The line is pretty enough following the River Lapataia, but the trip is not really worth the cost.

The Station is about 20 minutes out of Ushuaia by local bus or taxi ($8-10). As the start of the train trip is within the National Park, you also have to pay the Park entry fee of $8 pp, and if you have purchased a voucher, this has to be exchanged for the train ticket (same desk as buying the Park entry fee).

When negotiating with a taxi driver to take us to the Train station, He suggested he took us to the Station, and we catch the train 1 way, and then he would pick us up and take us on a 3 hour tour of the National Park for $90. We were so glad we decided to do this.

Gabriel (Taxi 282) had our trip worked out for us, through the National Park! It’s a well worn tourist trail but worth doing. First we went to the southernmost Post Office in the world and sent ( at great expense!!) postcards from the end of the world to the grandchildren!! It was a beautiful lake, made even better by the sunshine and clouds and huge birds ( South American Caracaras?? ) and we walked along the nature trail through the woods by the lake!
Next stop, after a quick peer at the turbal ( peat bog) to our second stop. Another lake and a Visitors Centre, before going to Lake Acigami where we could walk back to the river!! Gabriel also stopped so that we could walk to Laguna Negra, very peaceful and totally silent and also a couple of viewpoints as well as a walk to the Beavers Dam. (Senda Castorera)

We then drove to the very end of the world, with a sign that says that you have reached the end of the Pan-American Highway and Alaska is 17,848 kilometres away! A quick drive up to the start of the walk to the glaciers and we were done!! The trip had lasted 6 hours so we paid him 130$ - still less than a ships trip for one person though!!

Had a well earned Cape Horn beer and treated ourselves to 1 hrs free wifi before walking back to the ship.

So in summary, You can either do as we did (forfeiting the return Train trip) , or forget the train and take a taxi to the National Park direct from Ushuaia. I think the taxi tour we did is a standard route around the Park, but our Driver Gabriel was very good and let us do some additional stops.

It takes about an hour to do the ride. It’s not very far to travel, but it’s just at a really slow speed. It was a nice way to see the scenery and hear the history of what it would have been like for the prisoners. I think the best part was seeing all the tree stumps from where they (the prisoners) had cut down the trees. Because the weather is normally quite cold here the rate of decomposition is very slow.
Although I enjoyed the ride it’s not something I would probably do again.

At 2100 ARS per person (£26.25 at 80ARS to 1GBP), it's disproportionately expensive. Extortionate, even. And if we'd have done our research prior to visiting the park, we'd have known we could get a bus or taxi to the end of the world post office without having to take this train, which we so wish we'd have done.

What really made me angry though, was the blatant racket involving the photographers (you already know the kind, they look official and force you to take a cringeworthy pic before the attraction and then hope you buy it later). They are the reason the queue to get on the train took so long. Call us killjoys if you wish, but we refused to have our picture taken once we eventually got through the turnstile as we cannot stand this type of tourism – at best it's an annoyance, at worst it's exploitative. So, roughly 10 minutes into the journey (it's very slow and we probably only covered a couple hundred yards), we stop at a 'station' for 20 minutes(!!) under the pretence of visiting a waterfall. You do actually see a waterfall, but it's no Iguazu and it was annoying as the journey had only just begun. But of course the real reason we were stopping was so (shock horror) we could purchase the cheesy photos that many of us had been coerced into taking prior to embarking with some clown dressed in a prison uniform. As a practice it seemed nothing out of the ordinary as it's a common everywhere of course. But once we were all back on the train and ready to continue the journey, the photographers, of which there were about four or five, proceeded to walk the length of the train, inside and outside, with photographs in hand, looking for the people in the photos. Once they'd located the subjects they approached them directly, aggressively trying to get them to buy them, presumably at an extortionate price. At that point I actually wished we'd had our pictures taken just so I could tell them to **** off. I felt incredibly uncomfortable with it and couldn't believe what I was seeing. My wife and I have travelled to over 60 countries together and we know the game well; wherever you go, tourists are fair game and the aim of said game is to get as much money out of them as possible. But this felt different and I've never experienced such flagrant behaviour.

I am fully aware that many people would not be as offended as we were and let it wash over them. If that's you then it's your choice. But I am still annoyed we went on such an overpriced and blatantly exploitative 'attraction' and didn't use our better judgement, so if I can prevent even a handful of people from wasting their money and being put in the same situation it will be worth every bit of my time writing this review.

This little train is well worth the trip through fabulous countryside where wild horses roam to the Macarena Waterfall where the train stops for you to visit this lovely place. It is like going back in time. Well worth the visit and good value.

Nothing exceptional about this ride. The trip has been greatly hyped and not worth the time and cost. Even the way the price is calculated/recalculated from Pesos to dollars etc, I ended up paying far more when charged on card.

This train goes through the old route the prisoners were making to get to the prison. Has a stop in the middle of the forest to make some pictures of Macarena's Waterfall and as a selling point from a previous picture they take of you and some people dressed in prisoners clothes while boarding the train. The audio guide inside the train works nicely and it is in 7 languages. A longer way to get to the park, but in a good day a more relaxing way to get there through nature.
