A half-million Magellanic penguins are waiting for you in Punta Tombo, South America's largest penguin colony. This tour begins with a two-hour drive to the Punta Tombo peninsula in the Argentinean province of Chubut. There you will find hundreds of thousands of Magellanic penguins. The two-mile long, 1,969-feet-wide peninsula is covered with sand, clay and gravel. Between September and April, a large number of Magellanic penguins come to this site to incubate their eggs, and prepare their offspring for migration - the largest such colony in South America. Couples stand in front of their nests, protecting the eggs from birds and other predators, and occasionally one adult goes to the sea for food. Other wildlife encountered in the area includes sea birds (mainly seagulls, chimangos and cormorants), rheas and guanacos. As you walk along the trail inhabited by penguins on both sides, you will be able to observe the different phases of these birds' lives. Because of the proximity of the path to the nests, visitors may enjoy and learn from the penguin behavior. The path has benches for visitors to be able to rest and enjoy the view in this isolated place, far from towns and free of human interventions in the landscape. After this once-in-a-lifetime experience, the tour returns to Puerto Madryn and your ship. Please note: The length of your stay at the penguin reserve will be determined by the tour guide according to the ship's sailing time and following the circulation policies imposed by the reserve administration (usually no more than 90-100 minutes per group).

While on a South American Cruise, one of the stops was Puerta Madryn and we opted for an excursion to this wildlife refuge. It is one of the largest Magellan Penguin colonies in the world with 400,000 birds living there. They spend from August to March there melting and raising chicks before there Winter migration. It's about a two hour drive from Purta Madryn to the park, with some comfort stops. The reserve itself is very nice with restrooms and a few small shops and cafes. You walk among the penguins on trail and boardwalks. Easy and level for the most part. About 2 km round trip. Saw thousands of penguin. The birds were close; easy to see and photograph. Note that this is in a remote area and most visitors arrive by Tour bus, so it is very busy. Well worth seeing if you love wildlife.

This was our last opportunity on this trip to see penguins and we couldn't believe how many Magellanic Penguins were walking around and how close they were to us! The walk from where the van dropped us off to the ocean was at least a mile. The entire walk there were penguins walking around. Several would walk up to the walk way and if you stayed still they would cross in front of you. I guess penguins like shade as many were camped out under the boardwalks! We were given 1.5 hours to walk to the ocean and back which was the perfect amount of time. There were lots of people visiting at the same time but I never felt pushed or rushed and we stopped very frequently to take pictures and videos. We arrived back with 15 minutes to spare. At the bus drop off/pick up there was a gift shop, quick service diner and clean bathrooms. If you have back pain please note that the drive from the port to Punta Tombo is close to 2.5 hours one way and is quite jarring at times. Also, for people that have trouble walking or need a wheelchair - some of the walk was on boardwalk but several areas were small smooth rocks that moved under your feet as you walked. A couple people were in wheelchairs (from a different tour company) and the wheels sunk in the small smooth rocks making it impossible for them to continue.

I've been living in Mexico for some time now, having my sister living in Uruguay, we decided to travel and go somewhere new.
After doing a lot of research, we decided the best way to get together and catch up was along thousands of Penguins. This place is crazy! You get to mingle with them, learn their ways and enjoy their surroundings.
The tour guy was super funny, and my sister and I were able to bring back home the best memories, pictures and gifts from this little adventure!

I strongly recommend it!

Wouldn't miss this for the world!! Had lots of fun surrounded by these little guys.
We had "Garoto" our super fan Brazilian guide waiting for us right down the Celebrity Cruise ship with an adorable yellow penguin, to start off the tour. You could tell he knew what he was taking about and his passion for the place, history and culture was contagious.
Not only he shared some fan stories, but also took pictures for us and helped us through the trail.
I would definitely recommend this tour! And the best part? They go the extra mile and give you a gift to remember the adventure :)

Penguins were wonderful. Tour guide did not speak our language (english), we had an interpretor who was from France so we could not understand him either. They never gave us information or any details. ON the way back they both slept. Van was ready for the junkyard. Pleased with the penquins but not pleased with the service.

IT WAS NOT OUR COMPANY Dear passenger. I am very sorry for your bad experience but I would like you to look for the company that provided the service. All our guides speak fluent English and we have NEVER used an interpreter. I ask you to look for the real person responsible for this. We are at your service to help you in the way you need it

This was a 2 hour drive to see the penguins. The ones who took the tour on the big greyhound like buses were more disappointed than those who took a 15 passenger van. We took the van. It was way more personable and much quicker! One of our new couple friends said it took them 3.5 hours to get there on the big bus.
The penguins were everywhere! Interesting how far from the water they lived. So cute to watch them walk! The size of them is about up to your knees. They would come right up to you and walk around. You can't touch them but it's okay. It's just fun watching them. Worth the tour!

After missing the Falkland Islands twice this was a welcome opportunity to finally see penguins. It was a long drive but necessary to get to where the penguins are. There were 12 of us in a 12 passenger van for a trip of 2 1/2 hours each way. The trip was not comfortable. This van should be for short trips only.

Once we got to Punta Tombo the penguins were plentiful and moved about giving plenty of opportunity to see and photograph penguins, guanacos and ostriches. We say baby penguins in their nests as well as numerous adult penguins walking back and forth from the beach to the nests.

We came by cruise ship and were able to take this trip for about half what the cruise ship charged for the same tour.

Hi! First of all, thank you very much for choosing us. We agree with your comment, just two hours from the start of the Tour one of the passengers asked us to invite 4 friends who had run out of Tour and decided to accept their request. Unfortunately we did not have enough time to make the switch to a larger van. Anyway I appreciate your comment and we will use it as learning for the future. We would like to offer you a discount on your next visit to any of our ports in Argentina, Chile or Uruguay. Thanks again for choosing us Diego Friedmann Founder SouthExperiences
