Had a great day with Roeland. He picked us up from our guest house at 9 and we didn't get back till 5. Roelands local and historic knowledge is first class and I would recommend anyone visiting this area to book this trip. The Swartberg pass is great and we stopped for a nice lunch in Prince Albert. The trip was capped off when we saw two rhino at the rear of local game reserve on way back. We were visiting just after some heavy rain so I wouldn't be happy about driving the pass myself, anyway it is far better to site back and enjoy it rather than try and drive at same time.

We were tight on time, only spending one night in Oudtshoorn. Roeland fit in a late afternoon tour for us. He met us at our hotel, which was near the Cango Caves. Roeland couldn't have been more accommodating and helpful. Beyond that he was so knowledgeable about the history, geology, plant and animal life in the pass. We spent a wonderful afternoon with Roeland and he dropped us off after dark, maximizing every minute we had. We would highly recommend Roeland and Swartberg Mountain Tours for touring the area.

Roeland took my wife and I on a half-day tour to the Swartberg Pass. Our particular interests were flowers and geology but we learnt so much about so many things. A thoroughly enjoyable and informative experience provided by a top-class guide.

Roeland went the extra mile to meet our needs.

The Swartberg Pass was fantastic. We had a wonderful day with Roeland, he has a wealth of knowledge about the area. We were able to have lots of photo stops, and short walks through the pass. The view is just incredible and you won't want to be watching the road!

We booked a private day tour with Roeland from the UK- we had a fantastic full day, being picked up from our guest house at 9am and returning back at 6pm. Before driving up through the mountain pass we visited a farm where we rode some camels and then moved onto a tour of Cango Caves. The mountains are stunning with incredible rock formations and Roeland was a fantastic guide, always answering our many questions and keeping us informed about the geography, geology and history of the area. Nothing was too much trouble and we never felt rushed, we even managed to find time to do a bit of walking through a beautiful gorge. After a late lunch in Prince Albert we visited the Meiringspoort waterfall which was spectacular and on our way back we ended up stopping by the roadside to watch ostriches. A fantastic day out for both adults and kids, for us undoubtedly the best way of seeing the area. Many thanks Roeland.

My 19 yr old daughter and I took the day long private tour of Swartberg Mountain Pass with Roeland. Roeland was extremely friendly, insightful and enthusiastic. The tour included a stop at an ostrich farm and Cango Caves (both of which I would highly recommend) and lasted from 9am until 6pm (we had to reign Roeland in or he would have kept us out another 3 hours!). Roeland is extremely accomodating and well organized. His passion and knowledge of the surrounding area is evident. We thoroughly enjoyed the scenery, atrractions and Roeland's kindness. Would definitely recommend this to other travellers - one of the highlights of our 4 week stay in South Africa.

Roeland and his 4x4 Swartberg Pass tours are the highlight of any visit to Oudtshoorn and I can't recommend it strongly enough.

A full day consists of 3 main things to see:

First up and over Swartberg Pass where Roeland explains all sorts of fascinating aspects of the pass, stops many times for photos and to allow you to walk for a short bit. He knows this pass like the back of his hand, is passionate abut it and it all shows.

Then down the pass into Prince Albert for lunch and a detailed tour of the town to show us the beautiful old houses, the unusual water system of the town and various other interesting things and history.

The road back to Oudtshoorn is through the magnificent Meiringspoort - a canyon that will take your breath away.

Roeland is a great guide, a fun person, full of knowledge and advice and you won't regret making the decision to do his Swartberg tour. Next time I go there I am going to ask him to take me on the trip down to Die Hel/Gamkaskloof - bucket list item!

We did the Swartberg Pass with Roeland last year and had such a good time, we booked him again (almost a year in advance!!) for his tour of 'Die Hel', also known as Gamkaskloof.

He's such a genuinely nice guy; it was hugs all round when he came to pick us up, like old friends rather than returning customers.

We had worried a little that this trip might be a little 'samey' as we were covering a little bit of old ground before heading into Die Hel, but we really needn't have worried. Roeland kept us entertained and informed all day, his knowledge really is astonishing and his passion for what he does, in the country that he loves has not waned in the slightest since we saw him last.

Die Hel is certainly not for the faint hearted and most definitely not made for hire cars; we were very glad to have Roeland's 4x4 and expertise to guide us along the narrow gravel roads. To see the road winding out in front for miles really is something incredible.
For the descent, Roeland suggested we sit out back on the 4x4 to really get the full experience, it was like a white knuckle ride (in a good way) as it was far more thrilling feeling the wind in our hair and hearing the gravel crunch under the tyres. This was only a suggestion and possibly only because he knows what an adrenaline junkie my OH is!

As always, Roeland made sure we were comfortable, we even stopped for coffee - expertly served from the back of his truck. Lunch was at a fantastic little place that you wouldn't expect to find in such a remote area and included in the price of the tour.

One thing about Die Hel is that it was never finished, so once you get to the end, you have to turn round and come back the same way. This was far from repetitive as we saw baboons, kudu and klipspringer on the way back.

We were out from 9am until 6pm and there was never a dull moment. We thought the Swartberg Tour last year was good, but this went over and above what we expected and we credit the majority of that to our expert guide and friend.

Thank you Roeland for another truly memorable day out!

First, the bad point (and it's more of an observation than criticism) - He's not the best at technology; I was worried he'd not replied to my emails to confirm our booking, so thought he may not turn up (especially as we'd booked several months earlier). Bear this in mind when you book, but please don't let it deter you or you'll miss the best day out in a beautiful part of the country, with an exceptional tour guide.

Whatever skills he lacks with technology, he more than makes up for as a tour guide.
Roeland is a man of his word and arrived at our accomodation bang on time. We opted to visit the Cango Ostrich Farm and the Cango Caves as part of this tour (see separate reviews for these). There are 2 prices for these attractions; the actual price and Roeland's price (which is cheaper!). He knows everyone it seems and has negotiated special rates for his tour guests.
However, when we arrived at both places, the prices had increased. The ostrich farm honoured Roeland's rate but the caves didn't. Roeland insisted on giving us the difference back as what he'd quoted us was less than what we paid (not by much at all, and bear in mind we booked months before so prices would be subject to change).

We'd initially considered driving the Swartberg Pass ourselves, but going with Roeland was so much easier. He knows the road and countryside so well, he knew all the best places to stop; either for photos or just to show us something of interest (geographical/geological/flora & fauna etc), plus we could admire the scenery rather than focusing on the road.

What we also didn't realise, was that even though our hire care was fully comp, apparently the underside of the car isn't! Had we driven over a rock and damaged the underside of the car, we would be liable for repair costs. Another good reason for booking this tour.

From the Pass, we drove down to Prince Albert for lunch, which Roeland paid for; he said it was included in the tour price, which we didn't know.
He took us on a tour of the town, telling us about the houses and the unique watering system.
From there we drove to De Rust and onto Meiringspoort, before taking the back road home. As the sun started to set, Roeland pulled up the car and pointed out giraffes in the distance; this was our first glimpse of African wildlife and fantastic to see just in the middle of nowhere.

Time was irrelevant to Roeland and he was just as enthusiastic at 6.15pm as he was at 8.15am (which were the times he picked us up and dropped us off). There was no rush, we could spend as much or as little time as we wanted in a place.

Roeland is such a lovely guy and clearly so passionate about what he does. He has a great sense of humour and he really made our day something special; it would have been nothing without him.

We are returning to South Africa next year and purposely booked a stay in Oudtshoorn so we could book another day out with Roeland to visit 'Die Hel'.
