About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- daver1310 contributionsProvide honest information on what you will seeMarine Dynamics should be very clear you are very unlikely to see great whites. Two spotted in last 3 months. We didn’t even go the shark alley as listed. We were all packed in like sardines for dips in the cage for 20-25 mins in 10s, to see bronze whalers. Like a conveyor belt. No real marine biology explained only plugged sales at lunch (post dip) when 50% people already left. Considering profits from 35-40 people per dive (3 a day)… ‘poor show’ all round.Written January 7, 2025
- FreddyB4460 contributionsGreat day out with the kidsWhat an unforgettable girls’ day out with our 3-year-old daughters, cage diving with Marine Dynamics! The staff were so friendly and made sure we felt safe and comfortable every step of the way, which made all the difference with little ones in tow. We were lucky enough to see 12 sharks, a ray, and even a seal—the excitement on the girls’ faces was priceless! A huge thank you to Wilfred for the adorable penguin teddies the girls got to take home—they’ve been carrying them everywhere since. It was such a special experience, and I can’t recommend it enough for families. A day we’ll be talking about for years to come!Written December 21, 2024
- 417breannap0 contributionsAmazing experience - so many sharks!Even though we did not have great weather or visibility in the water, we still had a great time. Even when you cant see the sharks well underwater, you can easily see them from the upper deck while watching the other groups. Other reviews have complained about no great whites or bad weather, BUT if you do your research you know going into this tour that great whites are NOT often sighted in South Africa anymore. This is also not something that the staff can control, nor can they control the weather. We did still go out on the water even though it was very choppy and there was high likely hood of us getting sea sick. Staff was happy and knowledgable and they also took photos of the sharks that turned out better than any pictures I had taken.Written November 15, 2024
- Kash W0 contributionsBest Shark diving..Everybody who comes to capetown, must try this. Its a once in a lifetime experience. The marine dynamics shark, are really the best to go wirh. You will have a great experience with them. There guide Amy knows all there is to know about sharks. And they really help tou out a lot.Written November 13, 2024
- Ksturgeon0 contributionsGreat shark diving! Needs better food offeringMy husband and I had a wonderful time. Saw a ton of bronze whaler sharks, a whale with her calf, seals and penguins. Only complaint is that the included breakfast and lunch were too meager. I can understand going with a plain small breakfast before a rough sea trip to stave off sea sickness, but soup and a roll is not enough lunch after being up since 430 am and still having to drive 2.5 hours back to Cape Town before you can have a real meal.Written November 9, 2024
- ctfoodie20150 contributionsAmazing experienceAmazing experience! Our guide, Suzie & team were knowledgeable, friendly and professional. We were even treated with a visit from a stingray. I highly recommend Marine DynamicsWritten October 28, 2024
- Ashley T0 contributionsHorrible experienceWhen we arrived they were really accommodating and polite, there was free breakfast which was delicious, the safety briefing was quick and informative. Up until this point i had no complaints HOWEVER, instead or cancelling the boat or letting us know that the water was extremely rough today, they decided to still take us out without warning. The water was so rough it made myself so sick. This was the absolute worst experience of my whole life. I kept asking to get off the boat- i offered them $5000CAD to get off. I asked if another boat or helicopter or anything could come they said no. I was also not the only one that was sick- i believe there were 27 of us on board and only 7 people didn’t get sick. The volunteers were polite and asked if we needed anything multiple times and kept taking our barf bags and discarding them (koodos to them, what a job). I would have been less mad if they just took my money and said no boat today. This has completely ruined my experience on boats and i am pretty confident due to this experience i will never be getting on another small boat for an activity again. If you are going to take this tour and dont have an extremely strong stomach PLEASE ask them how the water is prior to boarding and save yourself- its not worth it.Written October 10, 2024

- BAC2620 contributionsExciting Shark Trip! This was a very exciting trip! The sharks swim right by the cage! The pickup was right on time and everything went so smoothly -its a very organized and experienced company. They served us breakfast with a safety overview before going out on the boat; served hot chocolate on the boat; and then hot soup when we got back. We saw about 8 sharks.Written August 28, 2024
- RachelOliveira0 contributionsAmazing tour and company! We had an exceptional experience on the Marine Big 5 tour, where we had the pleasure of spotting seals, whales, and penguins. As with any safari, sightings can vary, but the team made the effort to show us as many animals as possible while keeping us well-informed throughout. We were particularly impressed by the company's commitment to penguin conservation. Visiting their center to see the penguins being fed and swimming was incredible!Written July 25, 2024
- Homyong K0 contributionsGood service. Worth a try if you like sharksCage diving with sharks has been on my bucket list since I was young, and I finally got to do it with Marine Dynamics. All the staff and volunteers were very accommodating and engaging, making me feel well taken care of. Got to see several bronze whaler sharks but unfortunately didn't see any great whites. After all, it was worth a try. I'd recommend it.Written July 12, 2024
- Daviifam0 contributionsMarine Dynamics was fantastic, but it was a long drive for limited visibility of sharksMy family did the shark cage diving trip with transportation to/from Cape Town. Be aware that it is a long drive with an early pickup time. The sky was dark on the drive, but we enjoyed the beautiful scenery on the way home. As for the shark dive...we enjoyed seeing 9 sharks during our outing. However, there were no great white sharks (which are rarely seen anymore) and the visibility was very poor. This comment in no way reflects poorly on Marine Dynamics. They were fabulous hosts!!! Unfortunately, nature does not always cooperate so be prepared.Written July 10, 2024
- pamelatN8077YY0 contributionsFamily Fun with SharksOur family was picked up in Cape Town by our driver for our over 2 hour trip to Kleinbaai. When we arrived there was a breakfast and orientation. It was a 15 to 20 minute boat ride out to the dive site near Dryer Island. There were snacks available on the boat. The staff was very accommodating helping us get on our wet suits. We saw Bronze Whaler Sharks, a stingray, and penguins. When we got out of the water there was a hot fresh water shower and hot chocolate waiting for us. Then when we went back to the Great White House there was warm soup. It was an amazing experience and everything was perfectly planned out.Written June 25, 2024
- bethanw2570 contributionsFantastic trip for Father's DayThis trip was one of the highlights of our trip to South Africa. Within minutes of being on the boat a huge humpback whale breached and we hadn't even gotten to the dive site yet. The captain stopped the boat so we could see the whale in all its magnificence. We then saw penguins and a seal frolicking along. Once we reached the dive site it was very exciting. Not only was a friendly seal entertaining us but sharks were out in full force. We saw several copperheads and a 7 gill shark. My family was given a full 30 minutes in the dive cage and the sharks were close enough to touch. One even bit the cage next to my son and he was thrilled to have it captured on video. The only thing that wasn't great was the breakfast/brunch before we left. It was a one dish pasta and chicken. But we weren't there for the food and the experience was just worth every penny. Highly recommend.Written June 24, 2024

Very informative and friendly experience. Another one ticked off the bucket list. Marine Dynamics are very professional and have a made for purpose boat that can handle the windy rough seas very well. The marine biologist gave us a lot of information and was available to answer questions on board during the dive as well. The equipment available was in very good condition. Great experience. No great whites appeared but we did get to see a few bronze whalers.

Thank you for your detailed review!
Bronze whaler sharks (Carcharhinus brachyurus) otherwise known as the copper shark because of their distinctive colouration is the new star at the shark cage diving boats in Gansbaai. This species is found in temperate waters and usually seen in groups. Bronze whalers can grow up to 3.3m in length during its 25 to 30-year lifespan. Their copper/gold colour is distinctive, and this species is very active around the boats leaving nature lovers and divers enthralled

This is rather late as we used these guys in 2016 but have only got around to the reviews from that trip!!!
We had a great time BUT I’m not sure I’d go back and am surprised they still promote the trip the same way they did back when I was there.
We hired the boat exclusively so it was only the two of us. This worked great as the weather was so rough no other boats went out that day and everyone got turned away. As we were the only two on our boat they asked if we wanted to go out (they said there was no way they would take a regular group out as too many would get seasick) we had no concerns about that so went and the trip out over the huge waves was almost as exciting as the sharks!
We were pretty sensible and had a very tiny breakfast so did not feel any seasickness at all. Anybody stuffing their face before going out on the boat has only themselves to blame!
As it was just the two of us we had as long as we wanted in the cage and the water was very cold so my wife only spent an hour in it and then watched from the side. I was in the cage for a good couple of hours non-stop. A very different experience from what most people seem to get on a regular trip where are you are shuffled in and out of the cage for relatively short periods of time.
The visibility was poor but we knew to expect that and the sharks were bought in close enough to see-especially when playing back the go pro footage I shot from the cage.
We saw multiple great whites and they were very close to the cage-smashing into it on a couple of occasions. Again, as I was in the cage the entire time I got to experience all of these interactions. Very, very cool.
Afterwards we enjoyed the short ride back to shore.
In summary we enjoyed it an awful lot but we are very glad that we booked it exclusively and we’re not convinced we would have enjoyed it anywhere near as much as part of a large group (despite the obvious cost saving) also, we stayed the night before so there was no early trip down from Cape Town. I would highly advise that as it makes the day far more relaxed.
The last point I would make is that you need to really do your research and look at their daily blog. I studied it going back every single day for weeks and weeks so knew that sightings of white sharks were very likely when we were there (and were not disappointed) I have kept up reading their blog and I am really surprised when I see them advertising based very heavily around white shark interactions still. It seems the likelihood of actually seeing a white shark are VERY slim (and given the short duration you get in the cage on a regular trip, the chance of seeing one from the cage is lottery ticket slim). Glad we went when we did as it is not something we would consider worthwhile to see bronze whalers and seals which seems to be the current likelihood despite the advertising.

Thank you for your review, a lot of time has passed since 2016. A lot has changed around our sightings of our great white and bronze whalers, we have seen a whole ecosystem shift.
We are very glad you were able to see our white sharks pre orca predation which caused a flight response in 2017. It is always nice to have the boat to yourself but there is a great demand for this activity.
We agree it is good to stay closer to Gansbaai, as the Cape Whale Coast is an incredible place to explore and perfect for the nature lover.
Our daily blogs and social media are a great resource to keep up to date but our white sharks are continuously surprising us.

Service excellence! We opted for the self drive and all the arrangements went smoothly. We received our sms the day before with the start time and location. The check-in procedure was simple and we appreciated the continental breakfast during the briefing. They take safety very seriously - and each process from kitting up with life jackets to setting off into the ocean was flawless.
The boat is huge compared to the others. So much that the Marine Dynamics boat became an attraction itself with smaller boats getting closer to view “ our sharks”.
It was a major bucket list experience. I’d highly recommend it for locals.

Thank you for the 5-star review, Mariska!
Our reservations team is happy to hear that your arrangements and the check-in process went smoothly.
Thank you for the acknowledgment of our seriousness regarding safety. Also to read, that your experience with the life jackets and the boarding boat process "was flawless" is exquisite and appreciated!
It is true that our boat is larger than other companies to facilitate comfort and the best shark cage diving experience.
Thank you for your support and recommendation! Thank you for choosing us for your bucket-list adventure 🤗

After reading many reviews about shark dive companies in South Africa, I felt confident that I would have a good experience with Marine Dynamics. Sadly, I did not, and I wasted a day of my vacation in South Africa on a very disappointing trip with them.
After watching a long video about the company and it's commitment to the environment, we crowded on to a boat with maybe 30 other people and headed out to the dive site. I was surprised when we reached the dive site to find that it was a bay area with four or five boats already there chumming the waters for their passengers. It felt as if we'd be taken to a petting zoo where sharks were habituated to come because of frequent feedings.
The boat was quite full with passengers... many of whom had no understanding of how to maneuver on a boat at sea. This made changing into wet suits precarious and chaotic.
Once in my wet suit, I was part of the second group of divers to go down in a cage tethered to the side of the boat. Basically, you jump in the cage with 6 or 7 other people and lower your head below the water, holding your breath, as sharks are lured toward the cage with chum and bait. When I put my head below the water for the first time, my mask began to flood with water and I had to immediately come back to the surface. There's nothing more vile than choking on chummed sea water. I got out of the cage so that the crew could fix my mask. When they assured me it wouldn't leak, I went back down for a second try. But immediately, my mask leaked again. At that point, I decided it wasn't worth a third try. In addition to feeling like you're drowning as water floods your mask, the water was so cloudy that it was nearly impossible to sea the bronze sharks underwater.
While the remaining passengers took turns in the cage, the experience was narrated by a crew member who hyped up every moment as if we were attending a professional wrestling match. It felt highly dramatized, gimmicky, and disrespectful of the sharks who were sometimes lured so close to the cage that I think they actually ran into it. That's not what I thought I was getting into.
And by the end of the trip, none of the crew had come to speak with me about my experience with a faulty mask or to make amends in any way.
I would not recommend Marine Dynamics for shark cage diving. Perhaps they are well regarded on some level, but my experience was very disappointing for reasons that had more to do with how the trips are run and less to do with whether or not you get to see a shark.

Good day,
We sincerely apologize for any dissatisfaction you experienced during your recent shark diving adventure with Marine Dynamics. Your feedback is invaluable to us, and we appreciate you sharing your thoughts with us.
It's unfortunate that the experience didn't meet your expectations, especially for tourists seeking encounters with marine life in their natural habitat. Our custom-built boats are designed for shark diving and can accommodate up to 45 people. However, we understand your desire for a more exclusive experience, and we recommend considering our Exclusive tour options, where you will be the sole clients on board. We share your commitment to the well-being of marine life and are opposed to any form of animals in captivity, which is why we offer a shark cage for humans, not sharks, to ensure safety.
We take your report of the failing mask seriously and are actively investigating the issue with the skipper and guide who accompanied you on the day of your trip. Such equipment-related concerns should not occur, and we are dedicated to ensuring the highest standards of safety and comfort for our clients.
To provide some context, we consulted our visitors' book, and we found several positive comments from clients who had a fantastic experience on the same trip:
• "Fantastic Experience, Excellent coordination. Very professional will do it again."
• "Amazing experience. The staff are very friendly and professional."
• "Sharktastic"
We understand that experiences can vary, and we regret that you did not have the same level of enjoyment. We hope you will consider joining us on an Exclusive tour in the future, where we aim to provide a more personalized and satisfying adventure.
Once again, we apologize for any disappointment you encountered during your shark diving experience. Your feedback is essential in helping us improve our offerings and ensure a better experience for all our clients. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
Thank you for choosing Marine Dynamics, and we look forward to the possibility of serving you better in the future.

We loved this - we obviously hoped to see a Great White but we knew they'd been a rare sighting for a while but were more than happy with the Bronze Whalers. The crew did a great job getting the sharks "interested" and we got good info from the guide.
It was nowhere near as frightening as I'd always assumed it would be. These creatures are amzing when they are literally 'in your face'.

Tim, thank you for the 5-star review! Bronze whaler sharks are active, and our crew does our best to get these sharks as close to you as possible.
It is good to hear that your guide on board was able to speak about the sharks and other marine wildlife that you may have encountered on your trip. Our guides and biologists welcome questions as they are incredibly passionate about the wildlife and sharks we work with!
Our priority is your safety and comfort on board. It should not be scary to shark cage dive, and we are glad to facilitate an experience that was worth your while!
Thank you for your support.

This was an incredible experience. The staff was great and truly made it evident that they wanted everyone to have the best trip possible. We personally had the opportunity to see many bronze whaler sharks from the cage as well as from on the boat. We also saw a seal and a stingray. What we truly found impressive about this company is that they truly seemed to care - from checking in before the trip, the delicious breakfast, the assistance with sizing of wet suits, a hand getting on the boat, the instructions when in the cage to best see the sharks, to the towels and warm snacks after the trip, it was all above and beyond.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!
Oh lord. I would give it zero stars if I could. It has been a dream of mine to cage dive with great whites. My family went to celebrate me graduating. I was counting down the days and I left disappointed and, honestly, crying. We flew 15 plus hours for this adventure. Our travel agency swore about this company and had been working with them for years. I looked into the company myself and saw they advertise great whites and you will see others. Also they mentioned that they will get the great whites to breach the waters.
We arrived to the meeting and the first thing the lady said is that I'm not seeing the sharks. They take us to 15 to 20 feet waters and there were already 3 other boats there. The water was not clear and can barely see infront of you. We were only in the water for 15 mins and were not allowed back in because there 35 other people that need to get in the water.
I understand these are wild animals, but the guides did not seem to try. They also told me they have them tagged and they are near by. Also seal island was close by and didn't want to take us there. My friend went a couple weeks later with another company and saw 3 great whites right by seal island.

Thank you so much for your email and taking the time to write to us about your shark dive on 22 June.
Being proud of our internationally acclaimed tourism ventures as well as our marine conservation efforts, this is truly disappointing to hear about your experience. I’ve just checked the other comments in our visitors book, and I’m happy to report that this is the first and only complaint about the trip.
The other guests on the same trip, had this to say – to only mention a few.
“Amazing experience”
“Very happy, great experience”
“Great time will be back soon”
“Wonderful trip, expert guide”.
We can 100% guarantee excellent service, knowledgeable marine biologists/guides and that your safety is our priority – water temperature and visibility is up to nature

We enjoyed the whole experience! From the warm welcome, the lovely snacks, the friendly staff and the boat ride! We interacted with 6 Copper sharks for most if the time we were on the water and all of us had plenty of time in the cage. It was amazing! Marine Dynamics gets 5 stars from our group of 5! The gear fitted us well and was clean and dry when recieved. The Skipper and crew were knowledgeable and happy to chat. We felt safe and well looked after. Thank you all.
To everyone......you MUST do it, you CAN do it.

Shark did not show up. 20 minutes in frozen water plus a couple of hundred bucks between me and my gfriend for nothing. Unfortunately I did have quite high expectations compared to seing whales in Hermanus experience. I do not recommend to book this trip without knowing the fact that there is a high chance you don't see any animal or it is a very tiny version of what is considered a white shark. Just google Orcas killing south african wharks and you will find out what's going on there.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, and we regret to hear about your disappointment with the shark sighting during your trip.
It's important to note that observing wild animals, especially in their natural habitat, can be unpredictable. The behaviour of sharks, in particular, is influenced by various factors, including the recent challenges posed by Orca predation, making sightings less predictable since 2017. We still see them when they visit our bay. While we do our best to provide an opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures, we, unfortunately, cannot control their actions or guarantee their presence. We work with nature. We do also encounter Bronze Whaler sharks and our guests are enthralled by them. It can however happen that activity is slow for both species. Our marine biologists and guides publish a daily blog via our website and we constantly share recent shark sightings via our social media channels to stay transparent with shark behaviour.
Please note that paying for your tour is not only for our financial gain, but you are also supporting invaluable marine research and conservation projects Our aim is to provide not just a thrilling experience but also to contribute to marine research and conservation efforts. Shark cage diving plays a crucial role in funding these projects, enabling scientists to study these creatures and work towards their preservation.
The cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean do require some preparation, and we provide sufficient wetsuits to make this diving experience more bearable to those who are sensitive to cold water.
Thank you for understanding the challenges of wildlife encounters in the open ocean. We value your feedback and hope you might consider joining us again in the future, understanding that while we cannot guarantee sightings, your contribution helps support vital conservation initiatives.

We were a family of 4 going on sharke cage viewing in GansBai the 28th of December 2022. We saw 7 Bronze sharks on our tour. We had a very good experience on the sea with qualified and nice staff.
Due to we wanted to document the cage experience I decided to purchase the video taken this day, and I was promised the film on mail 2-4 days later. Soon a month have passed without anything despite several mail and correspondence to the company.
Its not about the 200 rand but about the missing memories documentation of the family in the cage at the same time.
Except from that last experience all were great.
Regards
Inge

Thank you for your review! It is wonderful to hear that you had a very good experience on your tour, including the 7 Bronze whaler sharks. Thank you for complimenting our staff on their attitude and qualifications; we will pass this on to them.
In regards to the video, we understand your frustration. We have had a lot of videos that need to be edited. Our team will reach out to production and see if there is a better solution so clients can receive their videos as soon as possible.
Were you able to retrieve the video? If not, please email marinedynamicsmedia@gmail.com so we can send you the video.
