- 1Robben Island Tours In 1964, an anti-apartheid revolutionary named Nelson Mandela was arrested and brought to South Africa’s Robben Island, just west of Cape Town. He would spend the next 18 years imprisoned in an 8x7-foot cell, forced to do hard labor, and permitted only one visitor a year. Even so, Mandela went on to become his country’s first black president, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, and known globally for his significant contributions to human rights and social justice. Robben Island—where most of Mandela’s 27-year prison sentence was served—was a place of isolation for nearly 300 years, housing many political prisoners and serving as both a lunatic asylum and leper colony. Today, the island remains a tangible symbol of political freedom and a reminder of the difficult road to South African democracy. Read on to learn more about how to visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Basics Most tours depart from Cape Town and include transport from city hotels, the boat trip to the island, and time at the former maximum security prison. Upon arrival on Robben Island, general tours start aboard a bus. Oftentimes, island tour guides are former political prisoners who can share information about South Africa’s history, as well as their own firsthand experiences. Custom and private tours are also available, while others combine a trip to the island with a Cape Town city tour or Table Mountain visitPass byConstantia Glen Winery
About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- John C0 contributionsManage your expectationsThis is a short cut way to see the big 5 . Good lunch included and some wine. However, it’s not a great experience. The National Parks are so much better. 10,000 hectares is very small for game and the lions, a pride of 4, are segregated by electric fences ( in case they eat the other game!!!) The dirt roads are in a terrible condition and the ride was incredibly uncomfortable. So its not a don’t go but manage your expectations.Written February 1, 2024
- Dreamer5607120 contributionsHORRIBLE FIVE PALM SOUTH RESIDENCE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!The FIVE PALM RESIDENCE SOUTH was absolutely the WORST, WORST experience . No wash or hand towels, rusty bathroom trash cans, dirty and stained indoor and outdoor furniture. Hair dryer could NOT be plugged into bathroom outlets, No extra toilet paper in drawers in bathrooms. Had to ask repeatedly and was left with a roll of Paper towel instead. Customer service is HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE and 100% unacceptable. DO NOT RESERVE or BOOK with this management company. They lack basic customer service.Written November 27, 2023
- 750solangeg0 contributionsWORST EXPERIENCEPlease stay AWAY from this company. I booked this tour via Expedia on May/26. I tried contacting them many times by email, whatsapp and calling and no available. The day before my tour i received a message at 2AM for my tour to start at 9AM. The guide arrived at 9:45AM, he was nice but had NO knowledge of anything about the tour. the tickets were included when i booked, but when we got to the table mountain and botanic garden we HAD TO PAY again for the tickets. then the robben island tour was cancelled since 2 days before which is understandable but the owner/manager had NO idea about the cancelation?? what kind of tour operator is this?? DO NOT use this company.Written June 13, 2023
- steingadnerin0 contributionsEnjoyable trip to see the Big 5The Matadi Team was great helping with an alternative to the tour I had initially booked, which was to another game reserve. The day trip to Aquila was very enjoyable, and we saw 4 of the Big 5 plus giraffs, ostriches, and many others. Our driver was also very accommodating by taking my luggage with us to drop me off at a different hotel upon returning to Cape Town in the evening.Written February 9, 2023
- 814karen1680 contributionsFantastic experienceFrom pick up to drop off our 2 night stay at Aquilla was fantastic. We stayed in Rm 9 which we'd highly recommend waking up to see elephants, baboons, rhino's, ostriches and wilder beasts from your balcony was amazing. The rangers were fun and knowledgeable. The food was buffet style and we enjoyed what was on offer and for each of the 2 nights a different menu. The spa was lovely and relaxing as we're the massages and it isn't often you're visited by a peacock when your chilling in the pool. Overall a great experience and would definitely recommend.Written February 1, 2023
- Curlz850 contributionsGorgeous timeAmazing time. Definitely do quad biking. If going in the winter period, bring trousers and a jacket. Loved the stop off in the middle of the safari to have wine. Bring a rucksack and don't take expensive valuables on safari as you might not be able to get them.Written October 21, 2022
- pjs20050 contributionsOUR DRIVER WAS NO GUIDEFrancis was a charming young man who was a wonderful driver but was greatly lacking as a guide. He didn't know even the most basic information about Cape Town or the sights he drove us to. There were 8 of us, each paying $140 ($1120). For that kind of money I feel Viator should insure that a knowledgeable guide is provided.Written October 16, 2019
