About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Jon E0 contributionsExcellent township tourMyself, my wife and three young children had an amazing day, learning so much about District Six and Langa Township. Our guides were very professional, extremely knowledgeable and very friendly.Written October 17, 2022
- Veeontherun0 contributionsAn amazing overview of Cape Town in 1.5 Days!Camissa Tours was everything we needed in a travel provider - professional, knowledgeable, and flexible. We had a long wish list and not much time for our 1st visit to Cape Town. Khonaye designed the perfect tour that hit all our must have sites while giving us lots of history and a great city overview. We saw and learned a lot from a great ambassador for this beautiful city!Written July 19, 2022
- emy3120 contributionsBest Guide/Company you can get!We were a group of 5 and our guide was Khonaye, we did the Garden Route in 3 days. The group and I decided to do the garden route via Camissa. Many organizations have standard plans fixed for the garden route. We wanted to make our own plans and not be time independent. We wanted to have the freedom, when we wanted to have for example. For example, quietly take the time for pictures or something. When you book the garden route with a guide or standard organization you have the chance that you are constantly dependent on the whole group and can not do everything according to your own wishes. We therefore decided to go for Camissa, since I got to know Khonaye through a township tour. I could always send him a message, so I did. I asked about the possibilities and told what we as a group would like to do in 3 days. Khonaye then proceeded to arrange everything and looked at what the best options were. The contact was good and clear. You get a schedule and an invoice. Everything is very clear. The full 3 days were magical. Of course the activities are great to do, but Khonaye was a pleasant guide. We had a lot of freedom and could do everything at our own leisure, something we wanted. Khonaye has a calm personality and is very chill to have as a guide. Definitely recommend, because we had the best times of our lives!!!Written June 6, 2022
- Lesley D0 contributionsHalf day Township TourWe were picked up promptly from our villa in Camps Bay by our driver Songs who on the way to the Langa township gave us a very informative talk about District 6 and the history of apartheid. On reaching Langa our guide Viera took us on a tour of the area including visiting a hostel and a home where a family lived which gave us an interesting insight. We also had an uplifting experience when we visited a Gospel Church to listen to the choir. We would thoroughly recommend this tour.Written February 24, 2020
- cherienicholl0 contributionsMust do Cape Town ExperienceAfter 5 nights in Cape Town on our last day we wanted to get under the skin of the beauty of the coastal line and visit the communities that make up this city of contrasts. Lawasi (Nelson) picked us up bang on time and drove us through the historical areas of interest in Cape town. His knowledge and perspective created the perfect foundation for the rest of our time on the tour. We learnt and participated in the great work that Abbey does in supporting the various communities in developing skills while learning to crochet ourselves. Then we went to Langa a black community where Oyembe (not sure about spelling of his name) took us on a walking tour of the community. As was Lawasi, he was articulate knowledgeable and very willing to share his experiences and that of his community. Our trip to Cape Town would not have been complete without this tour. Camissa support the local black and coloured communities by employing those from the communities to guide us through their history and their current day lives. The men we met that looked after us on the tour were wonderful and we cannot speak highly enough of them and our experience with Camissa.Written January 6, 2019
- suzanaizkrana0 contributionsTownship Tour with Gospel, highly recommendedA guide picked me up from a hostel. He was highly competent in history of the town's native inhabitants. It was an interesting insight. We visited Langa township, first a very pleasant gospel mass where we felt welcomed. After that a local man took us around the township to show us the good and the not so good features. He also told us that the locals want us to visit, see how they live and tell the others about the visit. All in all, I recommend this tour.Written January 1, 2019
- Edward B0 contributionsRecommended - deepened our understanding hugelyWe did a township tour round Langa via District Six. It was tremendously insightful and deepened our understanding of the history of South Africa and Cape Town enormously. It set the scene well for the rest of our trip really, and provided good context for thinking about the state of present day South Africa. Recommended.Written October 7, 2018
- KingGeorgeV0 contributionsHighly recommendedIf you want to understand South Africa-than take this tour. Nelson is a passionate and knolegable guide and made this trip fascinating. Simon at the Langa township was great, born in Langa and feels its pulse. We felt very welcomed in the place. Everything was as scheduled to the minute. So glad I took this tour :)Written August 30, 2018
- Ann V0 contributionsInformativeWe (2 adults, 2 kids) got picked up at our appartment by Nelson, our amazing guide who passionately told us all about the history of Cape Town, while driving towards Langa, the township we would visit. There, Saké took over and we walked with him through Langa. Saké lives in Langa, so who could explain us better. The tour is a real eye-opener, showing the bad but also the good. Strongly advised!!Written April 22, 2018
- Rainsborough0 contributionsCamissa township tourI recently went on a township tour with Carissa. It. Lasted a half-day and was excellent. The guides were knowledgeable and very friendly. Walked around Lange and drove by other townships. I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone wanting to see beyond the waterfront glitzWritten January 24, 2018
- moray680 contributionsPassion and commitmentWhilst the pick-up location is not signed we were collected by the very passionate Nelson and our Township tour began in drizzly weather. This part of the tour was very informative and our guide Nelson talked with great enthusiasm and feeling. We drove through District Six and then onto the township of Langa. (Note - access to the District Six museum may have been a very nice addition to the tour, albeit a small museum). We were welcomed into Langa with the songs of a wonderful local gospel church and its choir. A walking tour of the original communique hostels, the newer hostels, along some informal housing and ending at the new larger houses of the township. A good look into the lives and characters of the township... Unfortunately due to weather we could not see Robben Isalnd, we were disappointed but this is obviously not the tour operators fault. In closing, I would recommend this tour to visitors and locals alike to experience a troubled past and wonderful future...Written January 20, 2018
- RoxTud0 contributionsVery disappointed!I bought a day tour from GetYourGuide - Township + Robben Island. The tour was supposed to be made by Camissa Travel. I waited for them 2 hours to pick me up from accommodation, but they didn't come. When I called them, Khonaye told me that Godfrey will come soon. He also sent me an email telling me that the driver is 2 minutes away from my accomodation. I think I called them 4 or 5 times in the meantime. I found it very unprofessional and I was very disappointed. At least, I get a full refund from GetYourGuide.Written January 12, 2018
- Magzleisure0 contributionsExcellent friendly local knowledgeTour of Langa and townships Gladstone was a wonderful guide. He arrived 10 mins early to collect us from our apartment with a big smile and a handshake. Once everyone was picked up we headed over to Langa. En route Gladstone was explaining the not so distant past history of District 6 and some of the surrounding areas. Langa was a real eye opener, helped by his informative guidance we really got a feel for the local area and a better understanding of how they all live together. I feel I have been very well educated thanks to Gladstone’s excellent knowledge and kind, friendly delivery of so and willingness to answer any questions put his way. All in all I think this is a must do trip if you come to Cape Town. It is important to understand the struggles past and present and to see the ‘real’ Cape Town.Written October 16, 2017

- msc1190 contributionsLanga Eco Friendly Township TourThis was announced to be a tour by train to Langa for 4 hrs. Picked up 20 minutes too late at Camps Bay. We expectetd transfer to the train station but get a Minibus tour to Langa. The Driver says that trains are not reliable these days. In total 2hrs Minibus transit to/from Langa. Tour in Langa itself was o.k. but too short. The walk was maybe 25 minutes long. In advance (by e-mail) we asked for substituting the planned BBQ since we are vegetarians. They said we can have a drink stop in Langa but this was also cancelled. No refund, no excuses. No prior Information about regular problems with the train which makes the tour so different. One can also make a township tour with the Explorer Bus. This is less frustrating.Written August 23, 2017

Individual pick up at a hotel outside of town that was closer to my area
Very insightful and eye-opening walking tour through Langa with guide Sake. Sake who grew up in Langa gave us a very good and authentic overview to help to understand the history, current situation and the community spirit of the township. At the same time we had the opportunity to ask questions. This part of the tour took approx.45 - 60 min and was the best part of the morning.
People we met were all friendly and we felt always safe.
To be improved
We were astonished to be picked-up in a quite new looking Mercedes Benz. Quite a part of the tour was driving with the car through district 6 and through parts of Langa. It felt very awkward and not appropriate to drive with a Mercedes through the little streets along the shacks and township residents. It leaves a bit a feeling how much of the income of the tour will help the people in Langa?
Our driver guide Songs overloaded us with info during the tour. It felt a bit like a robot and we hardly had any chance to ask questions. Walking through the township felt ok for me but driving through the shacks gave a feeling of “human safari” that was unappropriate.
Tour lasted incl. transfers only approx. 3 h 20 Min instead of the advertised 4 h. No visit of creche, Bonteheuwel township, Gugulethu Seven Memorial and Amy Biehl Memorial as advertised.
The little tourist market in Langa where we had a stop to buy products seemed quite overpriced compared to other areas which leaves a bit a stale feeling. Most tourists surely want to support the community but would probably by more willing to help if price level was a bit different.
Overall mixed feelings and I would book a tour from another operator next time due to the experiences mentioned above.

2 hour tour disguised as a 4 hour tour. The walkabout tour in Langa was very interesting, joy to see so many children enjoying themselves. The gospel church was like a stage show with only a few locals there and over hundred tourists, and as we were leaving the locals arrived for the actual mass part. The pottery painting and animal skin drum banging were not representative of live in the township. What really let this tour down was the chaotic and disorganised collection route taken by the driver, cross crossing Cape Town back and forth and eating into the tour time. One lady had to wait 90 mins before we got to a toilet.

I would highly recommend the 1/2 day township tour. I have previously toured Soweto in Johannesburg and was not expecting such a personal interactive experience in Cape Town. My tour guide, Song, picked me up at my hotel. He gave us a drive through of district 6 filling us with history the entire ride to the Langa Township. This tour gives you the opportunity to walk through Langa with one of the residents and visit one of the hostels that the men used to live in while their families were out in the western cape area. To be able to visit this home (it was actually the home of our walking tour guide, Sakhe) and enter one of the rooms that 3 families share and briefly meet with the residents was a life changing experience. We also visited a local school house to interact with the cute kids in school there. As Sakhe warned us, hug one and you hug them all - but I didn't mind. After visiting the hostel home you take a quick break at the craft stand where the proceeds of the sale are shared with the local residents. They had unique things that I had not seen at St George's Square in the craft stands that are supposedly/hopefully made locally. I bought a bag and you can tell it was made by an individual, not a machine in a factory. Song and Sakhe made the tour an amazing experience. They were open to any questions about living in the township and daily life. Song even took me to a bank when I spent all my money at the craft stand and needed more in order to pay for my tour! 5 stars

This was a so well done tour, from the vehicular part to the walking throughout the township, so informative, so deep, so well explained, sharing the everyday living of the inhabitants of Camissa.
Highly recommend it.

I was on the Township tour yesterday and our guide Godfrey was wonderful and such an inspiration, he’s proud of the achievements of the Langa community and so he should be, a great insight into the local people and their on going struggles, this tour is the highlight of my stay in Cape Town, I highly recommend it, also the guide that showed us round the house where he lives etc gave us a feel of what it is really like in this community, the experience has changed my whole perception of Cape Town, brilliant experience, thank you both, I will never forget my visit.

This half day tour was supposed to be 4 hours long, and ours was only 3 hours. It did not take us to all the districts mentioned in the tour description. And the pick up in the hotel was rather confusing. We were waiting for them in the hotel lobby. When they turned up to pick us up, he said he'd been waiting for us for 20 minutes. But we had been in the lobby for 45 minutes waiting for them, and the hotel receptionist knew we were waiting as well.

Thank you for your review you do realise that you were not the only guest on the bus the driver guide had several pick ups before your pick up your hotel has two entrances one on St Georges mall and the other is on Hans Strydom ave when the driver guide called the office struggling to locate you he was at this entrance. Also our tour duration is 3,5 hours including the return transfer on get your guide site their site does not allow us to check 3,5 hours it is either 3 hours or 4 hours our website www.gocamissa.co.za will give you a clear description and duration of the tour I have mentioned this to the 3rd party site to rectify with the aim of avoiding this from happening again.

This experience is a must. Having toured Soweto only a few days before this experience was much more personal and inclusive. The walking tour with a local guide was eye opening. From seeing the kids in the local preschool to being invited into the the hostel accommodation and visiting the street markets it's a day you won't forget.
