Robben Island Tour Booked Through ML Sultan Travel & Tours
I used ML Sultan for the Robben Island tour and I would advise others NOT to use this company!!
I booked this tour through ML Sultan a few weeks prior to my arrival in cape town for R1,650. However, I soon realised the tour price directly through the Robben Island website is R550 for Non-South Africans.
I was advised after to speaking to two crew members on the ferry that transported me to and from Robben Island, that I had paid an extortionate fee and that the tour agenda would be the same for everyone travelling to the island.
I strongly discourage others booking with ML Sultan as they do not offer value for money. I paid in excess of R1100 for no reason what so ever.
I was picked up from my hotel which was only a 10 minute walk to the V&A Waterfront (where the ferry departs) and was driven around for 5 minutes. This made me angry as I had paid an additional R1100 for no reason.
The company should make it clear what service they are offering and should fully justify why they are charging in excess of R1100 more than the standard R550 ticket price which covers the tour and return ferry trip.
How can this company justify charging this extortionate fee when all they are doing is picking you up from your hotel and dropping you off if required.
NOTE: The actual tour of Robben Island was an enjoyable and a memorable experience. We were toured around in groups by an ex-prisoner. I would highly recommend visiting Robben Island. HOWEVER, I WOULD STRONGLY ADVISE NOT TO USE THIS COMPANY!!
The owner went an extra mile to accommodate me, I am very grateful.
The tour was excellent, I made a reservation very late in the evening for the next morning at 8:00am. The owner send me a message late at night to arrange the pick up and find a last minute ticket for me. I am really very grateful.
Thank you, I did enjoy your explanation and the whole tour.
Good but overpriced tour
This tour is a good tour of the insight of what happened on Robben Island.
The only thing we thought was it was very overpriced for what we paid, we could of made our own way there and purchased the tickets online or Via our Hotel.
The host/driver was lovely and informative on our Journey to and from the Port making sure we got on the Boat and meeting us when we return back from Robben island but that was it really.
Overall it was a good tour just overpriced for what you get in this package.
Robben island and district 6 music
Excellent tour guides an absolute must do in Cape Town. Langa visit very informative and guides made us feel perfectly safe and welcoming
Robben Island Tour
Faz was great. Picked me up curbside at my hotel, have me a nice tour of the city on our way to the waterfront and offered to drive me back after the tour (even though I stayed at the waterfront after the tour to do some shopping). Would highly recommend!
Jamal was amazing
My friend and I booked this for our trip to SA, it was so worth it. Jameel picked us up from our hostel and showed us around a little bit of Cape Town, before dropping us off for our trip to Robben Iland. The tour guy for our trip around Robben Iland was really informative and really portrayed the history. Before we were taken around the prison by an ex-inmate and he told us about his experience a really humbling experience.
Jameel also gave us such invaluable advice for our trip along the garden route.
Guides are Amazing!
Our trip was delayed due to rough water, but definitely was worth the wait! Guide was a former prisoner (after Mandela's time). We were duly impressed by his description of the conditions & the tour.
Trip to Robbens Island highlight of trip. Robben Island transfer/hotel is good way to book ahead of time and get to ferry terminal. Our boat was cancelled on day of trip due to wind (a common experience and why they can’t confirm more than 24 hours in advance) but we were able to get on next day. Recommend reserving first day of your visit to give flexibility in case of high wind to rebook.
ML Sultan Tour company
I cannot recommend ML Sultan Travel highly enough. I had the good fortunate to interact with Faziela Mohideem. She is not only an outstanding tour guide, she is a delightful woman who knows her town's history and facts as well as the "folklore" associated with many of the sights. And she goes the extra mile to help her clients. For instnace, I wanted to visit Robben Island, but most of the tour companies and my hotel travel desk assured me there were no available tickets during the days I would be in Cape Town. Faziela, on the other hand, spent two days (including one of her days off) tracking down a ticket for me and came to my hotel the night before the Robben Island tour to assure me she had the ticket for the day and time I requested. On the way to tourist sights for which I signed up, she made a point to take me to and explain the stories behind off-the-beaten-track sites known to Cape Town natives, but unknown and unseen by most tourists. Most of the places were not even mentioned in tour books or listed by other tour groups I researched. A tour with ML Sultan's Faziela is a cut above the usual and an experience you will long remember. Her contact information is 0027 83 385 8115/ email@example.com.
AMAZING EXPERIENCE!! A+++
Jameel and Faziela provided outstanding service throughout. I initially tried to purchase Robben Island tickets through the official website a month in advance but to my surprise they were sold out for the entire week i could go. unknowingly it was heritage week in South Africa and everyone was off. I found ML Sultan through TA
and was nearly immediately responded to by Jameel saying he could locate me 2 tickets. Well he did come through with the tickets and much more. The entire tour was handled professionally and by experienced, local guides. The District 6 museum was informative and moving at the same time. Next we traveled to the Langa township where we were handed off to a local resident/guide who provided a close up look to the conditions most Black South Africans are living in. A definite eye opener but nonetheless worthwhile, we visited a school and a help center for families/mothers. Both of these places provided the ability to donate or buy on-site goods made by the women. The guide was eager to answer all and any questions. Next we were transferred to the waterfront for our Robben Island experience. The process was smoothly handled by Faziela and the island tour itself was a humbling experience. As were the other tour components an x prisoner/local is your guide. The whole day was wonderfully handled and a must do if looking for a day to fill. BRAVO to ML Sultan.
Great Intro to Cape Town
This was an excellent tour and great intro to the city on my first day in Cape Town. The tour company was prompt and communicative with my hotel transfer information. We went on a nice walk along Sea Point, before heading over to the V&A waterfront. My tour guide handled the tickets for the ferry over to Robben Island. On my tour day, the weather was poor and they cancelled the afternoon ferries-so I was lucky to get over there. The tour around Robben Island was really informative and moving. Half of the tour was on a bus around key sites on the island, while the second part was a walk through of the prison to see Mandela's cell. Interacting with an actual political prisoner was really moving. Upon return my tour guide was waiting for me at the waterfront where he should me around some of the key shops and restaurants. Afterwards, he dropped me promptly back at my hotel. Would highly recommend to anyone on their first few days in Cape Town to get a sense of the city and half a day of history.
Salisbury, United Kingdom
We booked this tour through Viator as we thought it would educate us on the History of Cape Town, it's people and life in general in Cape Town.
We were picked up from our Hotel and soon discovered that we were only going to be a party of 3! Our guide/driver (sincere apologies that I have forgotten his name) was extremely friendly and took a keen interest in where we were from and ensured that he introduced us to each other making for a great and comfortable atmosphere.
He drove us round the local area before we headed off to the District Six Museum.
Our guide gave us a brief overview of the Museum and then left us to explore ourselves. Despite the sombre and moving stories, pictures and memorabilia; it really was a fascinating place and gave true meaning to the terrible and heart wrenching events that went on. We could have spent hours going round the Museum however, after about 30-40 minutes we moved on.
Our guide then took us to a Township (Langa) where he informed us that the next leg of our excursion would be led by a Township guide who had grown up there. Needless to say this was a real eye opener, seeing their ‘convenience’ store, their homes, Witch Doctor and even their pub was extremely enlightening and informative. We were really warmly welcomed by everyone we saw and shown how their environment had grown and improved throughout the years and their positivity and hope was in abundance. Never once did we feel unsafe or uncomfortable (the only time we felt awkward was when we were invited to “please take photographs” but we felt in some way slightly rude doing so – capturing pictures of their poverty didn’t seem right).
Our initial Guide followed us around the streets in the vehicle but he was obscured from view (not wanting to intrude on our immersive experience) but still only a stones throw away.
Upon leaving our Township guide; other than a tip, we wished our visit could have a bit more impact as in hindsight we would have liked to have left something in the Township – if we ever return, we will definitely contact the company (ML Sultan Travel & Tours) ahead of our visit to see if food/sweets/colouring pencils/books etc would be useful.
We were then driven past a few more less up-and-coming Townships which were really hard to see as they were so poorly equipped and over-crowded and we didn’t stop there but our guide was able to inform us on the plans for the future and in the fact that there is still hope.
We then headed back to the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront so we had time for refreshments before catching our 1pm ferry to Robben Island. Upon arriving our Guide introduced us to 'Faziela' who we had been liaising with online. She was an amazing character and one with whom we still speak fondly of now! Her unique personality and friendly demeanour was second to none and we wished we had been in her company for longer! She got us a drink and found us a sunny spot to sit in until it was time for us to leave on the ferry.
I will review Robben Island separately however; all I will say in this review is allow plenty of time to go through security and time to queue for entry to the boat. Also, try to sit as close to the back as possible as we were sat in the middle going out to Robben Island and found it really hot and humid so on the way back, we sat at the rear and not only were we off the boat immediately but we also had a free-flowing breeze!
We would highly recommend this excursion and the company themselves (ML Sultan Travel & Tours), from the moment we booked we received great communication from them and (as previously mentioned) Faziela who is a true asset to the company. They gave us such a professional and educational view of life in Cape Town and it fulfilled everything we could have wanted to learn as well as being inspired by the hope, positivity, determination and pride that the people in the Townships have.
Love the tour, pick was on time and was driven and explained different parts of the city, got to departure area and was taking right to front of line, highly recommend this company for your robben island tour!!
Ko Olina, Hawaii
This was an excellent trip and a great way to begin our trip to Capetown. We were picked up right at our hotel by a very enthusiastic tour manager, given a thorough overview of what to expect, had pictures taken of the beautiful view of Table Mountain, and helped to get onto the ferry to Robben Island. We were also given suggestions of things to do in the area on our own once the tour was over. When our tour of Robben Island was finished, we were met back on the mainland despite being about a half hour later than expected.
Our tour with Fazz was terrific! She shared a lot of information and was quite enthusiastic. Very enjoyable experience!
