The cruise itself was great. The sightings were great.
However we found the staff very apathetic is terms of serving drinks and snacks. We were told that we could pay with cash or card, however once on board were told that it was cash only.
I think we were also the only members onboard who had not brought their own booze and food.

We secured a spot on the boat in the front corner of the upper deck in the hope of obtaining a free view of spotted wildlife. That worked to a point, that is as long as only birds came into view. Most tourists on board were primarily keen on seeing hippos. When these came into view, a lot of people raised hastily from their chairs, throwing some to the side in the rush (they are not fixed on the deck) and obscuring the view of other more patient passengers, They felt the urge to immortalise themselves in the foreground of selfies with possibly a hippo in the background. It turned out that the only way to observe the animals at leisure and use a camera properly, was to squat in a corner of the deck directly at the railing not to spoil the view for other people, and aim the telelens at the animals in the water. That also allowed good panning movements with the camera without knocking anybody overboard with the long lens. We had some great sightings of hippos with a natural mangrove background. The fair mid-morning sunlight with a partly overcast sky helped avoid extreme reflections on the slick shiny bodies of the hippos.

On the return journey, the boat crew disappointed us by literally harassing a hippo resting on the shore, repeatedly bumping the front of the boat into the bank close to the resting animal, thus prodding it to get into the water. Senseless and unethical in our view.

Cash only when booking the tour on the car park is not very tourist-freindly.

The Hippo cruise was a great experience! We were only exploring St. Lucia for future clients and went on our boat cruise the following day after scheduling with the tour guide Sia (probably spelled differently). The boat was packed with people and if you are interested in photos taking by a real camera and not only smartphones, you have to think ahead and position yourself before the hoards of tourists climb over you to take a blurry photo for their family. Anyway, we were lucky with our sightings and saw plenty of hippos as well as crocodiles and birds. It was quite windy but still all right. The team on the cruise were friendly. If you did not pack a lunch bag, you were provided snacks and drinks on the boat. The guide was talking through the microphone with some facts about the area and hippos in general, which was quite interesting, if he wasn't interrupted by others or the microphone cracking! All in all, it was a nice experience and we enjoyed it very much.

Truly speaking an hour is way to long especially if you are taking kids. Only one siting of a crocodile and an eagle. There were lots of Hippos but this is money wasted, Told not to bring own beverages but they did not even have bottles water.

I visited St Lucia on a private tour from Durban. I was looking forward to observing, hippo, crocodile and bird life during this cruise. As it was a hot day and crocodiles are cold blooded, I mange to see one of them towards the end of the cruise, so bare this in mind.
There were only seven people on board this cruise so it wasn't overcrowded. It was a good way to spend a couple of hours on a boat, just a pity about the elusive crocodile.

I didn't imagine the large number of hippos including baby hippos I saw. The captain was easy to understand and extremely helpful in getting safely close to the animals and finding crocs near the water. There were many baby hippos playing with the adults, one even standing on the back of mom in the water! Better than a Disney movie. The boat would stop for a long time so we could fully enjoy the adventure. Ours was the last trip of the day so we enjoyed the sunset with the animals with a beautiful yellow/orange/red glow in the sky reflected on the water as we returned in our slow voyage back to the pier. The peaceful boat ride is nice enough but the hippos and crocs and the helpful captain and staff bring this to level 5. A great addition to our trip to South Africa.

We hosted visitors from the UK and spent a couple of days in St Lucia.. Now the " essential " thing that one has to do is to go on a boat cruise up the estuary. Needless to say, our visitors simply loved the whole experience--- and so did we. The skipper was very knowledgeable and went out of his way to make sure that we got the best view of the animals which we saw. Try the sunset cruise and check if they have a bar on board otherwise the other " essential" thing is to take your own drinks.

We rode on Santa Lucia Boat Cruise which was a two hour tour. The boat has two decks upper and lower deck. The upper desk had exposed us to an unforgiving sun, while the lower deck was cool and more closer to river water. The tour guide was very informative about the environment, been given close encounter with hippos on their natural environment although we missed out on seeing the crocodiles. They had limited supply of refreshment to buy from in the boat. Don't expect to go far as the cruise ride very slowly.
