About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Mariam R0 contributionsAmazing tour guide and well planned dayI booked this tour to learn about the history of South Africa and visit the city of J’burg and Soweto. The guide Neo was very knowledgable and local to the area and so was able to provide a great depth of information. He was very friendly and made me feel at ease throughout the dayWritten September 6, 2024
- 3SarahW0 contributionsVery informative tourOur guide was very knowledgeable and informative. We went through some rough parts of town but he made us feel as safe as possible. Unfortunately Constitution Hill was closed to tourists, that day so we were unable to view it. We would take another tour and highly recommend Tsalanang Tours.Written September 30, 2023
- Odyssey643111284960 contributionsDon't be just a tourist...become a homie.I booked this tour with my wife and we were not sure what to expect from this tour. Our tour guide, Thabang, was incredibly knowledgeable, kind, and friendly. He was well prepared to answer any questions we had to ask. The experience was very eye opening and educational. When our guide shared some personal experiences with us it felt more than a tour but like we were close friends, homies if you would. I will certainly recommend this tour to any one that wants to be more than a tourist and get immersed in the history of Johannesburg and South Africa.Written September 28, 2023
- 727yvesd0 contributionsI could not imagine a better experienceIgnorant about South Africa, but with a deep memory about the apartheid and Mandela, I was looking for a guide to discover the related sites of this history and to discover more about the region. The "Best of Gauteng experience" proposal over 6 days was fully matching my expectations and has been such a great experience ! This is also thanks to Thabang himself, my private tour guide : he is a nice, highly skilled, and well educated guy and he could answer all my questions, transparentlly. I highly recommand you to book the 6-days tour ! And I wish Thabang all the best ! He deserves it !Written September 16, 2023
- NhTravelingMan0 contributionsFor the real Johannesburg, don't miss this tour!My wife and I did a private tour with Thabang. He was outstanding! We have done city tours all around the world, but this was the best and most educational. Typically, city tours show you the nice public parks, shopping areas, and government buildings (blah, blah, blah). Thabang showed us everything, the good and the bad. We now have a much better understanding of Johannesburg and Soweto, than we ever would have gotten otherwise. We both feel we really learned something.Written July 2, 2023
- 944reannat0 contributionsDO NOT MISS THIS!An absolute MUST do!. This is a hidden gem amongst the available visits around the Johannesburg area. South Africa is rich in cultural history. The Lesedi Cultural Village brings it all together. We were introduced to Zulu, Xhosa, Ndebele, Sotho and Pedi villages, customs, music and dance. We played drums, introduced ourselves in 5 different languages (or we tried :) ) and got to ask questions. It is clear that these folks have a passion for sharing the amazing cultures here in South Africa. We had been with Thabang while learning about Soweto, so we were thrilled when he was available to join us here. Please, take a short trip to Lesedi Village. Learn, share, experience and be surrounded by the sights, sounds and music of South Africa's native cultures. We ended our time at Lesedi with a delightful lunch that introduced us to some traditional South African food. DO NOT MISS THIS!Written April 14, 2023
- JEVSY0 contributionsPrivileged! What an absolute privilege to have the heart of Thabang poured into us! His knowledge was incredible, his passion for his country immense. With humour, sensitivity, honesty, and pride we were so blessed to discover some of the real Soweto and Johannesburg. Well recommended, and thank you! Graham & JulieWritten April 5, 2023
- d_bottjer0 contributionsSoweto tourIt was the most eye-opening tour we have ever had. Our guide was very knowledgeable and explained everything to us. As being a local and had grown up in Soweto he knew from his own experience. We highly recommend this tour if you want to learn more about the history of Soweto.Written April 2, 2023
- Voyage438302725100 contributionsGreat private tour experienceWe booked a private tour with Thabang for the apartheid museum as we had a late flight coming in. He did a great job with transport and guiding us around the museum. Thanks!Written March 13, 2023
- kimberlytS1110KR0 contributionsOur excellent tour guide made all the differenceThabang Molefe was an extremely knowledgeable tour guide. There wasn’t a question we asked about contemporary life in and history of Johannesburg that he couldn’t answer with depth and context. He was warm, witty and his obvious love for the area shone through. He made us feel very comfortable and cared for. If I ever visit Johannesburg again, I wouldn’t hesitate to take a tour with Thabang again.Written February 28, 2023
- 89Winnie0 contributionsTotally worth itThe Lesedi Cultural village experience was spectacular. The staff were welcoming. The entertainment was so much fun. We learnt a lot about the different tribes in South Africa, their different norms and cultures and of course their amazing African cuisine. I highly recommend this tour and well as our amazing tour guide, Thabang!Written February 21, 2023
- mark p0 contributionsAwesome tour guide!Such an enjoyable and informative morning with our amazing tour guide, Thabang who, as a local of Soweto gave us the perfect combination of off-the-beaten-path Soweto as well as all the touristed highlights. - 504lloydb0 contributionsStop Searching For a Tour! Here is what you want to do!What a great tour! BEST TOUR GUIDE EVER!!!! Thanbang was incredible from the start. He got to know us briefly and then made suggestions to the tour to best meet our needs. We always felt safe and secure in his presence. His knowledge of the history of SA along with his vision for the future was a welcomed dialogue from such an astute young man. If you want an immersive experience, I highly recommend this tour. You will not be disappointed!Written November 14, 2022
- chadaN6381ND0 contributionsGreat Experience! Don't Do Any Other TourThabang, Thank you so much for a real and intimate tour of Johannesburg and Soweto. We were able to understand so much of the city history because of your knowledge. You told us exactly the right amount of information, took us to relevant places and showed us the real "J-Burg" experience. I will never be able to repay you for showing us the parts of the city that made it real (and not just the main attractions).Written November 1, 2022

Tsalanang Tour certainly goes the extra mile. Responsible travellers will relish the opportunity for conversation and reflection about a place that changed history, and is still working through the consequences - growing through the vitality of its own thriving community. Thabang from Tsalanang Tour of Soweto takes time to find out your own interests, concerns, and questions about Soweto, to connect you to a place that lives and breathes when the tourists have gone away. If you want to look beyond box-ticking and tourist gloss, book Tsalanang. Thabang helps you to connect you with the Soweto community that the quick grab doesn’t see: a place of hope and challenge. Tsalanang’s Tour is alive to the past and present, with hopes for Soweto’s future, and maybe the country as a whole.

I booked this tour with very short notice on the evening of the day before but Thabang contacted me straight away and confirmed all details for the pickup and the time so the communication was spot on!
The tour gives you an excellent taste of life in Soweto and can change some of your prejudgment ideas about this place.
I was travelling solo and I felt safe the whole tour, this actually helps to tune down my worries about safety around other parts of the city.
Thabang is very friendly and loves to include everyone in the tour to debate about different subjects, as other reviews said, you feel like you are travelling with a local friend.
Thank you again and thanks for the tip about the "Kota" everyone there should try it!

I enjoyed the visit from start to finish. The Toor Guide was punctual, vehicle clean, and the service excellent throughout the entire tour. I have no doubt in my mind that he will offer the same or even more excellent service to other would be tourers/visitors.

A great half day tour of all of Soweto with our guide, Thabang.
The tour provided an impactful overview of the diversity of life in Soweto; a view of the township beyond vilakazi street; and insight into the area's past and present and the role it plays in the fabric of Johannesburg.
Thabang is a knowledgeable guide providing a mix of personal anecdotes, factual overviews, and answering any questions we had, no matter how sensitive.
We left with a fuller understanding of South Africa's past and present.
Thanks Thabang! 100% recommend.

I visited Johannesburg in October 2021 and Thabang's tour was definitely a highlight! His guided tour of Soweto is a must see for sure. His tour opened my eyes to Soweto's past that goes beyond the history books. He was welcoming, informative, and incorporated my interest in street art into the tour. Definitely check out Thabang next time you're visiting Joburg!!

On our first full day in Johannesburg we were picked up by Thabang, an independent local tour guide, who, for the duration of most of the day was our guide, mentor, inspiration and source of information. He was brilliant and it was brilliant. At the end Thabang asked us all what our highlight of the tour had been. With varying language and emphasis, we all said much the the same. That it been the sense of understanding the place better - the history, the people, the culture and the politics. We can't hope to understand a place properly in this time but I can assure any one reading this that a visit to Soweto is well worth the time and effort. But please don't take the easy "tourist" option as Thabang calls it. Take his "homey" option and spend time getting to know all of it, even if for a short time. I travel to understand - and Thabang added to that enormously. I hope it is a compliment to him that I would now happily visit Soweto independently and without fear.

Thabang has put together a perfect tour that he can adjust to how adventurous his guests are feeling. He managed to show and tell the past and present of Soweto in a very real and truthful way.
I highly recommend Thabang's tour and if you do go, choose to be a bit adventurous and let Thabang show you all sides of Soweto.

Thabang is a absolute inspiration, he was born in Soweto and still lives there today. He shares not only a unique experience in the places he takes you to visit, but his own personal journey which brings alive the history and journey of the people of this part of South Africa. A real insight to the area, avoid all the other “tourist” trips, Thabang will help you see the true identity and people of Soweto.

Tabang was a great tour guide. He customized the tour to meet our desired experience. Was worth every penny! So much information and very safe, never felt in danger. He's a local guy, knows his stuff. Five star recommendation! He is willing to arrange details.

Hi
Are we able to park at one of the hotels, where pick up and drop off takes place, if we are not staying there?
Thanks,
