Great way to explore Johannesburg/Soweto with limited time
Excellent tour to see Johannesburg easily and safely in 1 day. The part where we went into the township for a few min with a special guide was particularly impactful. One thing I would change is that tourist trap restaurant that every tour including this one goes in Soweto for a lunch buffet--it's simply not good. However don't feel pressured to do the buffet-- you CAN ask for the a la carte menu (although in the end I ended up doing the buffet anyway)

A great way to see Johannesburg
We had 1 day to spend in Johannesburg and this was the way to see it all. We throughly enjoyed our time with Mo as he toured us all over Johannesburg & educated us about the history & politics of the region. It was very eye opening! He picked us up at our hotel in a comfortable van—he is an excellent driver! We visited all areas of the city—the affluent areas as well as the very poor areas. We had lunch at a fun local spot on the same street where Nelson Mandela lived. We saw prisons & museums—a very full day. I highly recommend this tour!

A very complete tour for a good understanding of South Africa’s history.
An excellent tour to grasp an understanding of the history of South Africa, apartheid, and the process to end it. John was a great guide and kept everything moving on time.

Excellent day in Johannesburg and Soweto !
My partner and I chose the Stevenson company for a full-day guided tour in Johannesburg and Soweto on March 1, 2025. Our guide was waiting for us at the scheduled time with a smile. He made us board the ultra-clean van and made sure we were comfortable, regularly checked to see if we had any questions. He was very kind and attentive in assisting us throughout the day and informing us as we went along about the history, social and political context. He proved to be an experienced guide, very well informed and happy to answer all our questions throughout the day. He is also an excellent driver, we felt safe. The only small downside that we would like to mention in a constructive spirit is the stop for a short visit to a home in Sowero (Township). We were surprised because our guide had not forwarned us (or we missed this information). Since this was a kind of sponsorship, we made a donation and left a tip to the man who showed us around. So far, it was okay… After, when we couldn’t see our guide anywhere, the man in charge of the tour invited us to cross the street to see his colleagues who were selling souvenirs… We felt trapped and forced to buy from each of them; you can tell us that it’s our problem, that we didn’t have to, but honestly, we were completely overwhelmed by this misery, poverty and courage of these people. We imagine that this was the goal so that we would be more inclined to buy… Our guide showed up, we told him that we had no more cash ZAR (as if this was known we would of made arrangements to bring more) and then, magic, we learned that we could pay by card… In short, all we would have appreciated is a little more transparency in advance (as systematically done for all the other visits planned during this day.) That being said, we recommend without hesitation this company for the quality of the tour Thank you

Amazing Experience! Customized 2 Day Solo Tour
I booked Stephenson Adventures for a 2-day solo tour + airport transfers in and around Johannesburg in December 2024. The entire experience including the booking process, pricing, the tours and airport transfers were excellent. Steve and the team were very responsive to all communications from the moment I inquired about tour options until my airport drop-off. I loved that at the of every day they would text me details for the next day including driver name, pick up time, etc. As a solo traveler, it’s reassuring to know plans for the next day are solid and reliable. I had a different driver every day, which worked fine for me, each of them was so kind and knowledgeable. Vuyo picked me up from the airport and guided my 1st day tour around Soweto. He knows so much history about Johannesburg and South Africa. And you can tell he’s passionate about sharing culture and history, he had me in love with Joburg within a few hours. On my 2nd day Benele was my guide and he was so much fun as he toured me around the Cradle of Humankind and Joburg CBD. And he went above and beyond. My airpod fell out of my ear in the car, and I could not find it. I gave up trying - I figured it went into a seat. He got out and searched everywhere until he found it. I kept saying it was okay, but he insisted. That was extremely kind of him. If he’s your guide, ask what his name means in English – I won’t spoil it but how he explains it gave me a laugh. I added on a transfer back to the airport because I was thoroughly pleased with their service. Endrow provided the transfer, and we chatted the entire ride about family. He too was very kind. If/when ever back in Joburg there will be no need to search for a tour company as Stephenson for sure has my business. Thank you so much for an incredible first visit to Joburg.

Thorough education on the history of South Africa
John was such an amazing and knowledgeable guide. I had considered doing a self-guided tour and am so glad I chose to have a guide! John knew all the history and was able to answer my many questions in depth giving me such a full experience. It was a powerful and necessary education.

Banele was fantastic! He made sure we learned about Johannesburg’s rich history and took us to places that showed the city’s true character. The tour included entry to entry Apartheid Museum & Constitution Hill, which are must-sees. I truly enjoyed the tour and would highly recommend it to others!

My husband & I were visiting South Africa from Atlanta Ga & started our tour with Joberg. We enjoyed the all day tour with Stephenson Adventures. The tour was structured in a way that it allowed us to get a full view of different neighborhoods of the city & also get a good sense of its history.

Our guide, Tsholo, was prompt, picking us up, was courteous & provided valuable insight as we visited different parts of the city.

Our favorite part of the trip was the visit to Soweto where we experienced the rich history of this township & saw its economic evolution. The visit to Mandela’s house was the icing on the cake. The tour includes tickets to several museum/sites & was pretty intimate justifying the higher price.

We would recommend this tour to anyone visiting Joberg.

We had a phenomenal tour with Mo! He did an incredible job if helping us understand the history of Soweto and Joburg through the eyes of a local. He is so knowledgeable, kind and professional in his work and took such pride in sharing his community with us. The highlight for us was visiting the Kliptown Youth Center where we learned about how locals are lifting up their community. I highly recommend this tour if you truly want to understand the impact these historic events and places have had an the ripple effects that continue today. Thank you, Mo for a day that will stay in our hearts forever. Communication was very clear throughout our booking process and we really appreciate this wonderful experience.

A really memorable day in Johannesburg with this local company.
Our guide Tsholo arrived on time and greeted and introduced himself to our party of four. Straight away you could see he was a very friendly guy, neat and tidy and the vehicle was immaculate. We done the Joburg and Soweto tour which was an all day tour with quite a few stops and all the time Tsholo was very passinate with his work and his country. He is very informative, humerous and very knowledgeable about the history, both poitical and industrial in the area.
The highlight for us was the opportunity to have a short guided tour of one of Soweto's large poor shanty towns. The guide here was a 20 year old young man who explained how they live in these places awaiting an opportunity to be rehoused in a proper dwelling. He also was very friendly and proud of his heritage. To be able to have this rare opportunity of the tour Stephensons company donates a percentage of the cost of our tour ticket to this community to aid in schooling for these children.
Cold water provided all day as well. We were taken to a local restaurant for lunch, which also was very good.
We would highly recommend this company for any tours or shuttle services they provide. It isn't a big company and if the rest of the staff are like Tsholo you can't possibly have a bad experience.

Definitely recommend this tour if you want to learn as much as you can about Johannesburg and the apartheid struggles. Our guide, Mo, was so knowledgeable and took us to so many areas in Johannesburg.
The most surprising part of the tour for us was when we visited Soweto, as we never realised just how big the whole area was….home to over two million people, it was like a separate city, complete with numerous schools, colleges and a university. It was fascinating to learn that within the area, there were three levels of wealth….the upper class who owned beautiful homes, the middle class who lived in smaller houses, and the poorer people who lived in self built corrugated iron shacks. The latter have very little, with no real infrastructure, and heavy rain is a huge problem for them as the roads become impassible and their homes flood regularly. A truly humbling experience.
We also visited Constitution Hill and visited the prison there, as well as seeing Nelson Mandela’s two homes and finally the Apartheid Museum. Coming from Western Europe, we definitely had our eyes opened to the struggles experienced by so many in South Africa. All in all, an excellent tour.

We had a free day in Johannesburg and chose this tour after doing some research online. They picked us up at our airport right at the expected time, and our guide (Mo) took us on an 8 hour tour of some of the highlights of Johannesburg and Soweto. We had anticipated that it would be a private tour with just my wife and I, but there were 4 other people also in our van. That wasn’t a problem since it was at least a small group. Mo was very entertaining and gave us good history of the country, city, and the struggle to end apartheid; all while driving us safely around. We saw many aspects of Johannesburg - the upper class neighborhood where Nelson Mandela lived near the end of his life, the city center, and finally the Soweto area. The highlight for us was the tour of Constitution Hill which was eye-opening to the many horrors that prisoners endured.

Only stayed on in Johannesburg to visit Soweto. Had a wonderful day on this tour with my guide Mo. I was messaged the day prior to the tour to confirm all pick up details were correct. Mo was on time and his vehicle was immaculate and bottled water was supplied. He was also a very skilled and careful driver in what is a chaotic and difficult city to drive around. Mo's commentary was knowledgeable, informative and insightful and given with honesty and warmth. I felt safe at all times and was happy to go along with Mo's receommendations on where to eat. Unfortunately the Apartheid museum and Hecter Pietersen museums are closed on Mondays. However Mo took me (with my permission) to see a typical family home in Soweto as well as to a Foundation which is helping school children with their studies, clothing them for school and teaching them life skills to go out into the workforce. I was really inspired by this experience and it was the highlight of the tour. I would definately recommend Stephensons Tours for the authentic experience of Soweto.

This tour was fantastic. We only had one day in Johannesburg, and this tour was the perfect way to spend it. Our guide, Mo, was incredibly knowledgeable and gave insightful explanations of South African history and the areas we toured. We did our tour on New Years Day, so many places were closed, but Stephenson Tours arranged for a guide to provide a tour of Constitution Hill, which was a sobering highlight of our time in Johannesburg. Mo didn't sugarcoat anything in his explanations of the historic and ongoing issues in South Africa that are still evident in Johannesburg and Soweto today. And the last stop where we got a tour of the Kliptown Youth Program by its founder (Thalani Madondo) left us inspired by the amazing work this program does for its community. I highly recommend this tour.

What can I say… Stephenson Adventures is PHENOMENAL! When I say that we had an awesome experience with Steve, I mean AWESOME ❤️

Steve was our guide. He is so patient, knowledgeable, caring, polite, honest, and funny. He went above and beyond to ensure that my group had the best experience possible. He spent more than the allotted time for our daily outings.

We spent 4 days with Steve. I highly recommend the Joburg City tour, Soweto Township tour, Apartheid Museum, and Safari tours. Steve provided in-depth knowledge of the city, as well as the township which we visited. We were able to visit the community and learned about their culture, daily challenges, and everyday life. On our Soweto day, we were also joined by Banali who provided shared valuable knowledge and insights on the community. Awesome guy! Steve also gave us extra time to shop which was greatly appreciated.

I loved having our own private group for the Pilansberg Safari. The transportation was excellent as well - nice van with a/c, heat, and lots of room. This was my first safari and although I only saw 3 of the big 5, it was a spectacular adventure. The drive from Joburg was ~2 hours. But the time went by fast because Steve provided great info and commentary along the way, answering any and all questions while also providing a little humor.

Lastly we visited the Apartheid Museum, followed by another shopping spree that Steve added for us. This tour is a must to understand SA history. Memorable experience to say the least.

I HIGHLY recommend Steve and Stephenson Adventures. You will get an excellent experience and top-notch knowledge… 1st Class service all the way!

Had a really great time with Stephenson Adventures. Despite our last minute booking literally at about 12am, they were immediately responsive. Driver arrived right on time @8.10am as previously communivated the next morning and was very professional, informed and helpful as we navigated Johannesburg and Soweto. Our minivan was super comfortable and clean. The selected sites for the tour was a great taste of the city. Most importantly we felt very safe. 6 hours flew by leaving us feeling inspired and knowlegeable. I would have no reservations recommending this tour company at all.

I found this company and sent couple emails to organise a private tour without other people. Just my partner , I and the tour guide. Our guide was Tsholo. He picked us up in the morning and we started exploring the city. He showed us the north, west, south of the city, SWETO etc. All the important sites giving well structured drive, walks and explanations about places, people, history and contrasts. Joburg seems like there are many small cities inside one.
We have been informed which areas we can be by our own and which areas to avoid as they can be shady. In the middle of the day he asked us what we’d like to eat for lunch and he picked a nice African buffet where we could taste local dishes and of course get explanation what it was. The entire day was eventful, lots of information and throughout culture lessons. We are extremely glad we picked this tour organiser!
