    Proudly South African
As a local in the country and someone in the Travel Industry, I really enjoyed my day on the hop on hop off bus. The staff at Rosebank and the staff on the bus were so friendly and attentive. I was proud to be a South African that day being part of showcasing our beautiful city. We work so hard in the Industry and I always like to support the Industry in any way and ofcourse learn as many products as possible. Well done!!!

Stunning outing for the family to see what an amazing place we live in
My family and I were super impressed with the quality of the information on the headphones as we moved around Joburg from the vantage point of being very high up. We learnt so much and the staff were so friendly and knowledgeable - especially on the Soweto leg of the trip. It's always fun to act like a tourist in your own city. I've realised that Joburg does get tourists - you just have to jump on the red bus to meet them!

    Not just for tourists
What a wonderful educational experience. Can't believe I never knew that Soweto was actually an anagram for South Western Townships. Also the Apartheid Museum was interesting but the place that brought me to tears would definitely have to be Constitutional Hill.

    An excellent day, highly recommended
A fantastic day. The tour is excellent, the guides are friendly and knowledgeable and the office staff helpful. The tours is interesting and varied. The Soweto tour was also excellent and highly recommended. The Apartheid Museum is brilliant, we spent over 4 hours there and it was not enough time! We wished we had had more time to spend and would thoroughly recommend the 2 day ticket.

    Easy to use hopon/off service
I just did the hop on/hop off bus section around Joburg which had the option to add Soweto. I was staying in Rosebank and the pick up point was 10 min walk from there in the Rosebank mall area so it is safe and easy to find. The bus left on time at 9. They is plug in audio with language selection which is clear and easy to understand. You have a choice of upstairs/downstairs and the open area on top. The timetable is very clear and easy to understand and drop off/pick up points are very clearly marked. I got off at the Mandela Foundation and Apartheid Museum. The ticket gives you a discount at the museum. It is a very easy system to follow and allows you the chance to get on/off where you want and spend time at places. Depending on how long you want to spend at what places you may be a bit short on time. I would suggest working out what you want to see and how long you want to spend and match with the bus schedule. I spent 40 mins at the Mandela Foundation which was enough time and then went to the Apartheid Museum which I spent 4 hours at as it such a big museum and a lot to take in, then caught the bus back to Rosebank depot. It is a good way to get an overview of the city and a cheap/safe way to get to some of the main attractions. Bring a hat if you want to sit in the open section.

Efficient Way To See JoBurg Plus a Wealth of Information
My recent city tour of Johannesburg and Soweto was an eye-opening and profoundly moving experience. The tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing captivating stories about the city's rich history, culture, and the struggles of apartheid. The audio information was also very insightful. I visited the Apartheid Museum and enjoyed sightseeing. I highly recommend this tour.

    Surprising
A great way to see around a large city. Bus every 40 mins so plan your trip. Visited Nelson Mandela foundation, Constitution Hill (probably need over an hour), Military museum (about an hour needed). Went on Uber to Apartheid Museum as it was closed on a Tuesday. Need 2-3 hrs. A must to see!!! Need to do Soweto (had been before). So maybe 2 days is best

CitySightseeing Joburg - Big Red Bus
This was a great tour to do as I had my Elderly Dad (84) in tow. As he was able to sit and listen to the audio commentary. We did the Soweto tour, which was interesting but was a bit rushed as we were on the last shuttle of the day. It probably pays to do that leg early as you can get off and join a later shuttle. We went to purchase tickets at RosebankMall (the ticket office is opposite McDonals), but the shop was closed, and the bus was at the bus stop (outside holiday Inn) ready for boarding. We hopped on, and we were able to purchase tickets onboard.

Great day in Joburg & Soweto
Red bus tour is a great way to experience a multitude of different attractions in Johannesburg in just 1 day. Free hotel shuttle from Sandton to Rosebank is a welcome bonus. Soweto tour with the amusing DT was a great introduction to an interesting place - if you want more, can always return. The combo ticket is great value for money.

The guide made the tour meaningful
Our guide DT was great - he was really engaging company and although I had some reservations about touring a place where many local folks are struggling - he helped to make the 2 hour tour very informative and from the point of view of a Soweto resident. He was able to answer all our questions and I felt I got a lot from this 2 hour tour.

I great way to explore the city and learn of its amazing recent history! Thoroughly recommend for all Jozi visitors!
This is the 2nd time to take this bus tour and I thoroughly enjoyed it again! It’s a very nice and safe way to explore parts of the city I would not normally visit. The commentary is very informative and tells you a “like it is” story of Johannesburg. It’s great they have a kids audio channel as well that surprisingly kept my 6 year old entertained for whole trip. A great trip I would recommend to all Jozi visitors to get a feel for this vibrant and interesting city!

My local friends had purchased tickets for this tour for a specific date before my arrival. My flight to Johannesburg was delayed, and we thought we were out of luck, but my friend called, and we were able to use the tickets another day. The tour was good. They supplied headphones that plugged into speakers inside the bus that told the history of the city and the different sites that we passed. There were several places that you could get off of the bus to see more closely. There were buses that would come to each stop every 40 minutes, so you didn’t have to rush through each stop, and could enjoy it at your leisure. When I make another trip to Johannesburg, I would do this tour again.

From start to finish, this was a wonderful experience! We live in Johannesburg, but there’s nothing quite like taking a guided tour with the wind in your hear at the top of a comfortable tour bus, hearing all about the city we call home through the tour guide in our earpieces. Every member of the team was amazing - warm, welcoming, friendly, and a fabulous ambassador for the Hop-On Hop-Off experience and the city itself. Highly recommended, whether you’re from out of town or just looking for something different, fascinating, fun and affordable to do in your own back yard.

My son and I really enjoyed this interesting bus tour of Johannesburg. Unfortunately we were short on time and were not able to do hop-off and take advantage of the walking tours nor visit the sites. I recommend that you spend 2 full days to take maximal advantage of the tour.
We most enjoyed the view of the Johannesburg CBD.
The commentary was interesting and on point, while presenting the best side of Johannesburg, ot did no shy away from the country's and city's difficult past. This is the 3rd such tour I have done this year and the first one where the content was not cringe-worthy.
The music was fantastic too.
Overall excellent value for money, would definitely do this again - and take my time doing so.

Thank you for sharing your detailed review! It sounds like you and your son had a fascinating bus tour of Johannesburg, even with limited time. Your recommendation to spend 2 full days to fully enjoy the hop-off opportunities and walking tours is valuable advice for future travelers. It's great to hear that you appreciated the view of the Johannesburg CBD and found the commentary both interesting and honest about the city's past. It's also wonderful that the tour managed to present this information in a way that wasn't cringe-worthy and that the music added to the experience. Your positive feedback about the tour being excellent value for money and your intention to take your time on a future visit is much appreciated.

I opted for the 1-day ticket with the Soweto extension tour and found the logistics to be subpar. The connection at Gold Reef Casino was particularly frustrating. If you board the bus at Rosebank, it arrives at the casino at 10:34, but the details state that the Soweto tour departs at 10:33. The hop on hop off bus actually arrived at the Gold Reef Casino very close to 10:33. This timing made the transition unreasonably rushed, leaving barely any room for even a brief restroom break after a 1.5-hour bus ride. Allowing a 10–15-minute overlap here would significantly improve the experience.

The Soweto portion of the tour was decent overall, but not without flaws. While most stops were satisfactory, the visit to Orlando Towers was underwhelming. The stop location didn’t provide good photo opportunities, and the visit felt rushed; just as we disembarked, we were told it was time to leave.

Additionally, some buses could use maintenance. After the Soweto tour, the hop on/hop off bus that I took had a large crack in the upper viewing windshield, which didn’t inspire confidence in its safety.

On the positive side, I must commend Michaela for her excellent customer service. We communicated via email, and she was incredibly responsive and knowledgeable. She gave me details on the tour and promptly resolving an issue I had with my ticket. Her efforts were a bright spot in an otherwise average experience.

With better timing, improved planning, and proper bus maintenance, this tour could be far more enjoyable.

Thank you for giving your feedback here and for reaching out to us via email as well. We’re glad we had the opportunity to address your concerns directly there and hope our reply was satisfactory. We sincerely apologize for the logistical challenges you experienced. The tight connection timing at Gold Reef Casino is something we’ll share with the third party that operates the Soweto extension tour. Your suggestion to allow a 10–15-minute overlap is very reasonable and would certainly make the transition smoother for guests. We’re sorry the Orlando Towers stop didn’t meet expectations and felt rushed. We’ll pass this feedback along to our partners to help improve this part of the tour. The cracked windshield on the hop-on/hop-off bus is concerning, and we’ve flagged this with our maintenance team to ensure all our vehicles meet the highest safety standards. Thank you again for your valuable feedback, and we appreciate your understanding as we work to improve the experience.

We originally just booked the hop on hop off bus but fortunately were able to book the Soweto extension trip on the day. I’d recommend booking both. Well worth the extra money. Also we went on the 2nd bus from Rosebank @ 10.20. I’d suggest going on the earlier bus if 9.40 as we just about fit in the Soweto tour. We lost track of time in the Anti Apartheid museum as there was so much to see. Vincent the driver and Sereni - apologies for possible incorrect spelling was the driver. They were so knowledgeable and great fun. I think they got the Irish sense of humour! Sereni remembered all the names of the group. We were entertained by Zulus in Soweto and enjoyed cool African beer from a small shop. We have been on hop in hop off buses all over the world and this was the best one yet. Commentary on the bus was excellent and clear and well timed. The bus was clean and in great condition.

Vincent and Sereni did an excellent job, making the trip informative and enjoyable with their knowledge and sense of humor. It's great to hear that you found the commentary on the bus excellent and that the overall experience was the best you've had with hop on hop off buses worldwide. Great option for getting to know the city in a few hours, especially the central region, which is so rarely recommended.

You can buy the ticket directly on the bus, with a card. The itinerary offers an audio guide in Portuguese. Not all attractions are open every day, especially on weekends - you need to be careful not to get frustrated.

It's not shown on the map, but stop 9 (The playground) is 2 blocks from the Arts Museum, Wits, and access to the university campus; From there you can walk to the Origins Center (about 10 minutes). It is a safe region to walk.

There is a transfer from Sandton, which includes some hotels in the region.

We do this trip every year for my daughter's birthday, since she was 4 years old, starting in Cape Town, so we have a good idea of what to expect each year. The 2023 trip was a shock because inner city Johannesburg was out of bounds and the trip was significantly shorter than in previous years - so much so that my then 12-year-old daughter commented on how much had been cut off the tour. This year, however, the trip was INFINITELY better than the 2023 trip! The tour of Johannesburg this year is still shorter than it was years ago, but the commentary is better, and the sights just seemed better. We hopped off at the constitutional court and did a self-guided tour of the women's jail, which we hadn't done in previous years.

The bus we boarded afterwards had a familiar driver - he is the same driver we had in 2023. In 2023 he was very patient with us as we had my 81-year-old mother with us and with the step into the bus being very high for those with aged bones, or short legs, it isn't an easy step. However, he waited for my mother and the rest of the passengers were very patient in waiting for her to board and alight. (She has since passed away, so the 2023 trip will always be memorable for us). The 2024 trip has been poignant since my mother wasn't with us, but my daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I am very happy to have had such a good experience this year, as is my daughter, as she grows to appreciate each trip. I am glad too, to have the privilege of being able to have these trips as the memories that are being made are priceless! The people who have been part of our group over the years have enjoyed the experience, too. Thank you for making our trips such positive experiences for us. Hopefully, one day, we'll get to experience the tours in overseas destinations.

Thank you so much for sharing this heartfelt reflection on your yearly tradition with us. We're deeply honored to have been a part of such precious memories for you and your family over the years. It’s heartwarming to hear that this year’s experience was significantly better, and we’re glad that the updated commentary and sights resonated with you and your daughter. Your feedback on the changes in the Johannesburg tour is invaluable, and we’re delighted that, despite those adjustments, the trip still brought joy and meaning. It’s truly touching to hear about the patience and kindness extended to your mother on the 2023 trip, making that year’s tour a lasting memory for your family. We're very sorry for your loss, and we hope that these shared moments continue to bring comfort and happiness as you make new memories. Thank you for continuing to choose us for your special trips, and we look forward to the day when you can explore new destinations on our tours!

I visited Soweto and absolutely had fun.
The experience was not only fun but also incredibly informative. I gained valuable insights into the rich history and culture of South Africa.

What made the tour truly exceptional was our amazing guide Mokgomotsi. He was entertaining, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about sharing Soweto's story. His enthusiasm was contagious, and he went above and beyond to ensure our group had a fantastic time.

Our guide expertise and warm personality made the experience truly unforgettable. I couldn't recommend him highly enough!

We had a fantastic time in Soweto, immersing ourselves in the rich culture and history. Although our bus schedule was tight.

Ended up purchasing a two day ticket and it was a great to safely get my first taste of the city and I'm glad I did!

While the Southern Winter schedule has the bus running only once an hour, I was able to work through it and still managed to visit most of the sights I wanted to check out during my time in Johannesburg! This was added by the luck of my booking a hotel close to the terminus of the buses at The Zone @ Rosebank shopping center so I was able to immediately rest after a day of hopping on and off!

Not only was the ability to jump between the green route from Rosebank to the red route towards the Apartheid museum seamless, it seemed that we didn't even have to change buses as the buses themselves would go from red to green routes and vice versa at Constitution Hill so one could possibly do both routes in a single sitting.

Also a major shoutout to the wonderful staff at Constitution Hill who kept us informed, she was truly a pleasure to interact with as I took advantage of the two-day ticket! I also appreciated their reminders on putting on sunscreen as it was still brutal even during a Southern Winter!

It is also worth noting that, as with many of the City Sightseeing buses, to try to avoid the last bus if you can by shooting for an earlier one as it can get crowded especially when picking up the last groups from the Soweto tour!

Amazing tour. Would recommend to anyone interested in seeing all of the real Johannesburg. If you go on the first bus, then you will have time to pop off the bus do a bit of shopping/museum visiting and the jump on the one 40 or 80 mins later. Please don't get off in Central Johannesburg, not recommended.
