About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Angela M0 contributionsMother of 3 boys (young adults apparently)In all honesty it was great !!! Throughly enjoyed it albeit physically taxing (coming from a woman in her mid 50s who hasn’t done mtb ever before ). If you want more details read on below …. Just a brief note to the department of conservation - there seems to be some areas that they have forgotten to pave - significantly sized “cobblestones” to ride over, slushy areas where one could bog down… Apparently this is “literally tech” according to my MTB afflicted 15yo son who could have done the course in 45mins if he wasn’t waiting for his parents and siblings. Furthermore , we protest at the number of uphills - there are a couple - there is no indignancy in walking the bike up. The white wine at the end still tasted great whether one walked or rode up. My husband thought he was 18yo (late 50s) was hero riding and came to grief when one of the rocks came up and tried to bite him. The Apple Watch , turns out, has a falls assessment and offered to call emergency services . We declined - as only injury was to ego. Would thoroughly suggest. Views are amazing (we had a sunny day). We hired bikes through TCB - very helpful and informative. They tricked us to the start of the ride and even took family (proof of life) photos !!!Written January 6, 2024
- Dooley71470 contributionsOne of New Zealand's iconic outdoor journeysThis is definitely one for al to enjoy, especially now that e-bikes allow those with a different level of fitness to also enjoy. This ride has everything, and is topped with well explained history boards along the way. The track is ideal for biking, running and walking, with Ohakune the town at road end with its variety of food and drink to enjoy. Hugely recommend Kune Shuttles to get you there for this excellent and achievable adventureWritten June 28, 2023
- JPY0 contributionsGreat walk from Ohakune to Hapuawhenua viaductWe walked the Old Coach Road from Ohakune to the Hapuawhenua Viaduct and back, it was 13km in total and took us about 3 hours. It is well worth it as the views of the two viaducts are amazing. They are a real feet of engineering and we found out that the old viaduct was the location of the first commercial buggy jump in the world. The path is well signposted and the terrain is undulating and not overly strenuous. The paths are uneven and vary between gravel, cobbles and rough stone, so make sure you wear good footwear. It's a popular cycling route but there's plenty of space to share the walking paths with those on wheels.Written May 1, 2023
- stressbunny0 contributionsA must-doFInally completed a longheld dream to ride OCR. We used TCB shuttles in Ohakune to take us to the track start at Horopito. for a one way ride back into Ohakune. TCB Staff were informative and I highly recommend their servicesWritten October 24, 2022
- dons00000 contributionsA really fun rideThis was a really fun ride. The forest was beautiful and the viaducts were spectacular. While not a long or difficult ride, it was quite rough due to the cobbled surface of the old road and we were pleased we had full suspension ebikes, rented from TCB.Written May 30, 2022
- carriem417430 contributionsFabulous must do walkFabulous walk from Marshall’s car park, only an hour to get to the viaduct, tricky sharing the trails with so many bikers, so would do again mid week when quieter, also lots of info along the way which you may miss if you are biking. Picnic table and long drop at the viaduct too!Written April 23, 2022
- Viv M0 contributionsInvigorating Ride!Overall, this was a very good ride. We did it both ways and it is manageable for average riders and certainly OK if using ebikes. Some lovely parts and great scenery with interesting history. Does need a bit better signage at beginning if starting from Ohakune and at rain crossing at the Horopito end where steps to access the rail crossing don't make it an obvious transition, or maybe that was just because we were going so fast! Miss it and it's an uneasy ride on rail balllast. The cobble is tough at times but by picking the best course it's tolerable. Certainly worth doing.Written February 19, 2022
- ShirishParanjape0 contributionsGentle walk but NOT shaded. We walked from the car park to the viaducts- did not bike. Good easy walk with nice views of 2 viaducts on New Zealand’s main trunk line - old and new. Not a lot of the walk is shaded, most is in the open. Informative signs along the way. One suggestion: When you reach the point where the straight path goes inside the tunnel and the right turn goes to viaducts, take the right turn. You cannot exit from the tunnel to the other side.Written January 8, 2022
- NZBazza0 contributionsHoropito to OhakuneBeautiful scenery, great trail with a bit of everything in it. Points of interest along the trail. Hiring of E-bikes was a great experience..Written April 1, 2021
- tracyh7160 contributionsA bit trickier than you thinkGreat ride. Don't be foolish about the km seems short??. It is a bumpy rocky ride across various terrain. If wet quite difficult we would think. Dry condition as we had nice but still quite difficult in places. We enjoyed it...take water . Level of fitness needed as some places the cycle up across rocks and tree roots.. challenging.Written March 20, 2021
- Shelley M0 contributionsVery bumpyWe got a shuttle to Horopito and biked to Ohakune. It is very hilly with a good track but it is incredibly rough pretty much the whole way with tree roots, rocks and cobbles jutting out of the ground. Lovely scenic route but I would rather walk it than bike it. The tunnel and Hapuawhenua viaduct are pretty amazing sights.Written March 12, 2021
- missktuck0 contributionsGreat day out, fun exerciseWe hired dual suspension bikes and got a shuttle ticket from Ohakune to Horopito from TCB who were just fantastic to deal with. I was a novice mountain biker but honestly thoroughly enjoyed the whole trip back to Ohakune! The scenery and landmarks are so varied there was never a dull moment. 10/10 would do it again!!Written February 3, 2021
- 143leannew0 contributionsGreat bike ride for limited timeThis was a great morning out. Track very easy to follow. Bit rough in places but the scenery and bridge rides were fantastic. One way took us 2 hours.Written January 31, 2021
- kiwitreks0 contributionsGreat way to spend a dayMy partner and I hired bikes and did the return journey which is about 30km. Definitely more difficult/uphill on the way there compared with the return back to ohakune. It was manageable for 2 people with 0 mountain biking experience on conventional bikes within 3 hours, but if I were to do the whole 30km again I’d opt for an e bike. Scenes are beautiful and the downhill is a great rush. I’d recommend starting early so that the track is alot quieter, after 10am it started to get busy with people dropped off at the other end.Written October 28, 2020
- klvmar0 contributionsA Bike Tour for All AgesWe loved this bike tour! We were shuttled to Horopito and biked (mostly downhill) to Ohakune, through Tongariro National Park on Old Coach Road. The scenery was beautiful...huge trees and dense vegetation, crystal clear streams, and hilltop vistas. We biked over viaducts and through a tunnel, concluding our tour with a shuttle pick-up at a quaint little cafe with garden seating. As two 70-year-olds with plenty of biking experience, this was one of our favorite tours.Written April 23, 2020

Very expensive for what it is.
Would 100% not recommend with young kids who aren’t big on biking far. Wasn’t to bad for us adults as we paid the extra for an e bike, otherwise would have been a real struggle on just a regular bike.
Views were lovely but by the time we were half way through we just wanted to finish as my daughter was really upset.

We hired ebikes from TCB in Ohakune and they could not have been more helpful. We changed our plans last minute to pick a better weather day, they were very accommodating and at the start gave us lots of information and advice about the trail before transferring us to Horopito to ride back to Ohakune.
As an over sixty couple we found parts of the trail challenging but we took it steady and overall it was a great experience. The scenery was stunning and varied, and the information boards along the way gave a good insight into the history and ecology of the area.
I would highly recommend TCB for their great service and for the quality of their bikes.

When I booked this I did not realise it was a grade 3 ride. I found it challenging, though fun but my wife who is a complete beginner was not so enamored. she found it difficult. The down hill toward the town was the only thing she enjoyed. This is NOT a ride for beginners or people who have no experience of mountain biking.

The track was well marked. We loved the virgin bush, historic viaducts and tunnels and the adventure. Started from Ohakune with a coffee at the railway station. It had been raining over night but was not too slippery. We managed the mud but the cobblestones were real bone shakers so we shuttled back from Horopito with Max from Kuneshuttles. He only charged $15 pp and gave us a good commentary coming back to the motel. Smash Palace and the lovely Frankie at Jump Start were a welcome relief at the end. Berry Smoothie was delicious. Took 4 hours stopping to read all the history along the way. Track suited better for walking than e biking for us 68 year olds

We went there with 8 years old kid. The trip was fantastic, not too hard for an experienced rider, but a little bit tricky for young kids. Very safe, just a part of the road is quite bumpy. A lot of fun stuff and the scenery along the way is beautiful.

Very enjoyable. We hired bikes and organsied transport through TCB in Ohakune. Good bikes and good instructions.
We are in our 50's, and not fat. Enjoyed the ride up till the last hour, where the seat was starting to hurt, and the pedaling was tough. If you are not riding a bike regularly, pay the extra for an electric bike.. those people were still smiling at the end.
Over all, a very enjoyable ride with great views. Took us 3 hours with a lunch stop.

I am solo, so had a shuttle drop me at the far end of the trail in Horopito so I could ride back to Ohakune where I was staying.
The ride covered a range of countryside. A km or two of flat farm backroads before entering the National Park. Once in the park the trail was undulating, with a few modest climbs (I did not need granny chainwheel for any), and the surface varied from packed earth, thru gravel, to broken up antique cobblestones (It's an old coach road after all). The cobbles and tree roots made it a little bone-jarring at times but nothing major for a hardtail MTB. After leaving the National Park the trail was either road, roadside, or packed-earth riverside.
There's quite a lot of little stops along the way with good signage. The old viaduct, alongside its modern day counterpart, was great to ride out and back ... though folk upset with heights may not find it comfortable. All the little way points were worth the effort, unless you were trying to break some sort of record.
If you're interested I was advised that the record is around 45 minutes, and that was on a rigid bike. I was 2 hours, without hurrying and without missing any of the little stops along the way.

Great ride from Horopito to Ohakune. I rented a full suspension bike in excellent condition from the friendly TCB team. I walked most of the uphill and then zoomed down through beautiful bush. Each section of the track is different - fantastic. The viaduct was really cool to ride on back and forth. (The toilets on the other side of it are handy 😉).

Everything online made this sounds like a good/easy family ride. Sadly it was way trickier than we could have imagined. Very bumpy, lots of uphill and very muddy. Our poor 9yr old struggled the whole time. Not for kids with no mountain bike experience. Great scenery but tough ride.
