An authentic way to discover Sapa and the Hmong community
There is a way to live a great experience, far from the paths crowded with tourists and it is thanks to ETHOS! We spent a wonderful day with Tra, who guided us through the rice fields, forests and Hmong villages, teaching us a lot about their way of life. We were welcomed into a family to participate in the preparation and share a meal together, not only did we enjoy ourselves but everyone was very kind. In addition to having a good time, we say to ourselves that we may be helping a little by choosing this kind of experience, which promotes ethnic minorities. It is also very easy to get in touch (a form on the website to begin with) and ask for advice on what is best suited to the time you have. We (my boyfriend and I) only had 1 day and we did the Spirit Tree, and I wish we had more time.

Trekking outside of Sapa with Ethos
Amazing!! Thank you May Lai for our amazing trek and everything you taught us. Thank you to you & your family for opening up your home to us. We loved your knowledge & skills. Our meals were huge portions and tasted so good. The views were amazing, pictures don't do it justice. Thank you to Hoa, Phil, Chaz and all the other ladies for setting up this wonderful trek. The morning briefing was fantastic!!

      Once in a lifetime!
When I’ve been able to be at the Hmong Community Center, the headquarters of Ethos, and groups have returned from their Ethos-led tours, invariably the travelers are bursting with enthusiasm, and anxious to share the adventures they’ve had. Also, invariably, they say it’s the best travel experience they’ve had in Vietnam or, sometimes, their best travel experience ever. Ethos trips are individually customized to your interests and abilities, and their guides are highly trained and very personable Hmong women, who lead groups often through their own home landscapes. Often, homestays and meals are involved in the Ethos experience. They’re so friendly and happy to share aspects of their culture and terrain and natural world that it’s easy to forget you’re a visitor from far away. There’s just about no other equivalence that allows for this kind of deep penetration into a world’s culture and ritual and art and nature so different than one’s own. All shared with a vibrancy and friendliness that is characteristic of the Hmong people in general and in Ethos’s guiding philosophy. It is indeed an org that’s committed to being the Spirit of the Community and after even a single day, you’ll quickly see how apt is the name. It should also be said that Ethos is far from being a large corporation owned by outsiders or big business. Indeed, all the revenues generated are dispersed locally to employees or to members of the community who are in need. I recommend highly trips of several days’ duration as they allow for maximum immersion, tho if, like myself, you are mobility challenged, there are workshops and classes in traditional arts and cooking and home visits that can be arranged. And I have no doubt you’ll walk away declaring that it’s been ‘the best travel experience’ you’ve had in Vietnam and possibly ‘the best travel experience’ you’ve had, ever.

      Ethical, inspiring and genuine
So special! My teenage daughter and I had the privilege of trekking with Ethos. They are not your normal travel organisation. They care about making a positive impact on the lives of people in the communities that we visit as part of our trek. We kicked off by getting an overview of the live and challenges of the Ethnic minority groups in the Sapa region. This provided good context for us before we embarked on our trek. We were privileged to have Tra (spelling?) as our guide for our two day and one night BuffaloTrek. Tra is a Black Hmong and a mother and grandmother who didn’t go to school but speaks great English; learnt through interacting with tourists. During our trek through and across rice paddies, across undulating terrain, through villages, bamboo forests, past waterfalls and across waterways, Tra gave us insight into the lives of the Hmong people; many of whom live by subsistence farming- growing enough rice and crops (potatoes, carrots etc), raising chickens, pig and the like to feed their families (& guests like us); the also forage in the forests for their green vegetables. The women also make their own fabric and clothes from start to finish (amazing!!) These people live off the land and live in humble abodes. Tra gave us insight into the culture of the Hmong people including the roles of males and females. It was fascinating. She was also frantically working on her needlework preparing her jacket/ coat/ attire for Tet; very significant culturally. We were privileged to join local families who opened their homes to us for lunches and dinner. Part of our experience was helping to prepare our meals. We also stayed overnight with a family who were just beautiful and so incredibly hospitable despite the language gap. Tra has the ability to make all who cross paths with her feel special and to laugh. It was a little sad parting with Tra free two wonderful and insightful days together. Ethos were amazing and I love their ethical approach- empowering women and girls from marginalised and significantly disadvantaged communities. Hoa and Phil are so caring and real. If you want a real experience in which you don’t see other tourists as you’re too far off the beaten track, I cannot speak more highly of Ethos. I’d love to join them again for another trek! Hoa also organised our train from Hanoi as well as our transfers from the train.

Sapa in early May. Ideal temperatures for hiking. Ethos trained guides are amongst the best. Please also patronise local busines
Ethos' awesome photos and videos on FBook and YTube kept me sane during the long Covid lockdown months. Something to look forward to when travel would again be possible... So, as soon as the need for pre flight testing was lifted, I got in touch with Ethos and off I went! Hoa arranged everything - transport, hotel etc including a very interesting talk by Phil about the history, culture of and their work with local families. I spent 2 days (really not enough) with local guides who spoke excellent English, hiking, meeting their families and learning about how they manage to thrive in such difficult mountainous terrain. I arrived early May and terraces were being repaired and prepared for rice planting. A few were being flooded. I managed to miss my footing and had to spend the rest of the day with one caked up shoe but it was just a little too early for the green mirrored contours of growing rice or the golden sheaths before harvest. The rains arrived a week or so after I left. Life is not easy in the Sapa mountains but the people I met from Ethos have my total admiration. I hope to go back at harvest time one day.. Unfortunately I lost all the photos that I took from January to June, so unable to upload any

Our local trip to Sapa : Red Dao and Hmong experience
Ethos is the perfect choice if you’re looking for authenticity and not mainstream local tours. First of all Oha and Phil warmly welcomed us with coffee and breakfast. Phil gave us very important highlights about Sapa and the minority living in their area and this was really crucial in order to have better understanding of Ethos and their mission. We have done 2 trekkings of 1 day each, both included lunch at a local family house. The first one was the Res Dao experience, our guide was Mary May. She is really good in english but mostly smart and pro-active. She will take you through the rice fields while explaining you everything about the herbal plants you are going to see. She will tell you a lot about Red Dao and their traditions. The second day was an Hmong experience, our guide was Kea. She is 34, never went to school and learnt English from tourists, and believe me her english and her communication style are really impressive! She took us at Hmong local market, literally we were the ONLY 2 TOURISTS at the market. We bought food and then we had lunch at an Hmong local house. The women were preparing the dresses for the new year’s eve. After that we went to a trekking of 5km through the rice fields and was really good ! Conclusion: we loved these two girls, the way the live keeping alive traditions but open to learn from people of different cultures while at the same time working as guide. Ethos is about this: supporting women, supporting traditions, supporting the environment. Elena&Giacomo

      10 out of 10
Had a great morning at the markets with Cha our great english speaking tour guide. Her knowledge of everything in the market was amazing as well as sharing her tribes culture with us. Really enjoy the one on one experience. Plus profits go towards the education of the girls giving the tour. Which is great!

      Amazing trek 10/10
This was one of the most amazing experiences we have had on our trip. The people in the organisation are super kind and the hmong people are so inviting and allow you a peek into their world. Without a doubt something you dont want to miss. Amazing mix of culture and nature.

The best taste of Hmong tribe life and the real Sapa
Unbelievable experience from beginning to end. My partner and I wanted to experience the culture of the tribes around Sapa and this didn’t disappoint. The teaching at the beginning from Phil was completely eye opening- we had been to Cat cat village the day before and didn’t realise that this village is basically completely fake/ cultural appropriation to the extreme. Instead the Hmong people have been essentially shunned by Vietnam yet they still monopolise off these communities with these villages and Sapa itself. Ethos is about empowering the tribes whilst supporting the maintenance of their culture as they so wish and it really came across over the two days. Our guide, Ker, was incredible. We visited three different households- her family’s and her own- and stayed in her parents. The route she took us on was challenging but perfect for us and we were very lucky with the weather. Not a single other tourist was seen until the last 1hr on the final day. The food cooked by her family and her was incredible and we had a first exposure to bamboo worms (delicious). We learnt about their culture, beliefs and some of their traditions and Ker was only too happy to help, offering a briefing in her mother and father’s (the Shaman) home. The family homes are very traditional and eye-opening to the culture they live by every day. They’re an extremely hard working and tight-knit community who care about the village as a whole. Every view we came across was gorgeous and the route offers some perfect photo opportunities. Although it is only the beginning of our travels, this is going to be a favourite experience in all of Vietnam and I will be recommending to everyone considering a trip to the country.

      Wonderful Experience
We had a wonderful and very authentic trek and home stay with Hoa and her entirely female staff. Our Red Dao guide, Mary May, spoke very competent English and was very warm and helpful, and gave us a wealth of information about the culture and the region. Hoa (the proprietress) speaks excellent English, and provided us a very culturally nuanced view of the region, the people, the history, and modern and sociology economics forces at play. We were warmly welcomed into our host families, and the meals were very authentic (if likely more plentiful than what they usually eat). Hoa was also very helpful on arranging for transportation and even getting our laundry washed immaculately. A very rich and immersive experience. Highly recommended.

Unforgettable Experience by trekking and getting to know the community
what an incredible experience! We went on the 2D1N buffalo trek with our amazing guide Cha. During the two days hiking we were able to take in all the stunning views (rice fields, valleys, forests, mountains, …) and the many buffalos without seeing even one other tourist! The treks they do don't follow any standard trekking trail, but small trails they found themselves which are unknown to others. We ate and slept at homes of local families, who are (like Cha herself) extremely welcoming, loving and kind. We learned so much about the history and culture of the different tribes living in the north of Vietnam and were even able to prepare our food together with the families. ETHOS works together with the local families, in order for them to profit from the tourism and not only experience the bad side of it, which we appreciated a lot. It was an experience we won't ever forget, thank you so much!

      One of the highlights
We are a family of 4 with kids aged 8+10 and spent 9 weeks travelling through SE Asia. Without doubt the day we spent with a Hmong family, making and eating lunch together along with our fabulous, friendly, informative guide Cha (sorry I probably spelt wrong) was one of the best days of our entire trip. I could not recommend this company highly enough, they were just wonderful. Thank you so much to Hoa at Ethos who organised it and gave us a fascinating chat for an hour or so at the beginning to give us the history, context and culture of the area. She even gave us a tip on a farmstay to stay in a different part of Vietnam later on our journey which turned out to be a massive highlight also. It is a beautiful place with wonderful people and a true cultural pleasure. We wish we had had longer in our itinerary as would love to have spent a night or two rather than just the day.

Ethos Spirit are a fabulous company offering amazing local experiences
Our experiences in Sapa were brilliant - all arranged through Hoa at Ethos Spirit. We did a 2 day Red Dao trek with a wonderful local tour guide, Mai Kim, staying in their family homestay. The scenery was stunning, the food breathtaking, the people wonderful and we learned so much about their way of life during our time there. Our family of 5 absolutely loved our experience in such a special area. After we had a day to ourselves, we also did a walk for a few hours to the Love waterfall with a black Hmong guide. Hoa was so helpful organising everything, changing the itinerary to suit our kids and our energy levels, they are a wonderful company who do great things with the community. I can’t recommend them highly enough. Thank you Hoa and the team.

      Buffalo Valley experience
Breathtaking. When we arrived, they asked us where had we been in Vietnam already, then they asked us for which was our highlight; we said Nin Bihn. They assured us that after the experience with the Mong families we would change our mind, and they were so right. We did the Buffalo Valley trek with our guide Soso. During two days, she took us through rice plantations, bamboo forests and Mong villages. It felt really personal cause it was only 2 of us and her. That's what's also very special from Ethos, they want you to have a personalised and unique experience. She taught us all about plants and made us try many different things. We then slept at Li's house, which is one of Soso's friends and they were the most welcoming and kind people I've ever met. Li and Soso made some amazing food for us, with all sorts of vegetables they grew or picked up from the surroundings. We got to cook with them some spring rolls and we also played with their 3 beautiful kids and laughed about our communication barriers. It was such a luxury to enjoy our time with these amazing women, while cooking, in the kitchen, eating, enjoying some "happy water"... I can't express with words my gratitude for how much they thought and gave me. It was again a reminder that happiness can be really simple and that material things are to share with others because what's really important in life are relationships and connection.

Hoa was really helpful when I contacted her to arrange the trek and homestay. I also learned so much about Red Dzao and Hmong people, and the history of Sapa, from chatting to her and her family. My experience with my guide May Lai was wonderful - she was warm and down to earth, and it was great to stay with her family, cook together and drink rice wine, all amid beautiful surroundings! The herbal bath was also wonderful. There isn’t a rigid itinerary with ethos so you can tailor your trek length according to your preferences (and the weather). While the tours may be pricier than others, the experience is sure to be authentic, unique and memorable.

Thank you for this wonderful review. We are strong believers in the idea that price is what you pay and value is what you get. With well over 1000 reviews and 98% being five stars, we are proud to be unique in Sapa by offering flexible treks, homestays and cultural experiences that offer genuine cultural immersion while also supporting a verity of community development projects. We are delighted to read that your time with a May Lai was rewarding. Her family thoroughly enjoy welcoming guests and their hospitality is something that’s we value greatly.

What a wonderful and life changing exoerience. I heard about Ethos by word of mouth from friends of friends. They are highly reputed for organising treks and homestays with the local populations. From day 1 they were extremly helpful in helping us to organise our trip and giving us useful information. We spent 2 days with zing (I hope we spelt her name right) an amazing woman, whose English was excellent and who guided us through the markets and mountains explaining their way of life and customs as she went. We spent the night in their home and were made to feel very welcome. Living conditions were very basic and made us realise how much we take for granted basic facilities such as showers and indoor toilets! We plyaed with her children and ate dinner with her family. Even though the weather was terrible and we spent 2 days in the clouds, seeing very little of the stunning rice fields, we had an amazing time. This was undoubtedly the highlight of our 3 week holiday in Vietnam. The team even gave us information on Cat ba and Hoi an which were our next destinations. The team work tirelessly to help the local populations retain their culture while improving their standards of living. By doing this trek and homestay we felt proud to have contributed to this.
I hope one day to come back and do another trek with them. I recommend Ethos whole heartedly.

Hearing that you found ETHOS by word of mouth is awesome. We don’t advertise or have an office to speak of, but run as a social impact business from our community centre in Sapa. Our guide team are all mothers and farmers and contribute to our development projects in their free time. This makes us unique in the region. As well as being an epic guide, Dinh is a valued member of her community. She supports ETHOS in running health and hygiene workshops for kids, a valuable service that has taken on an over more powerful significance in light of the global coronavirus pandemic. We are delighted that you enjoyed your two day trek and homestay with Dinh and her family. Although Sapa is famed for its incredible scenery, the culture is perhaps the most unique and interesting element of the area. She is an accomplished cook and a warm host. Thanks for your excellent review and we do hope to see you again if you return to North Vietnam in the future.

Ethos organised a fantastic tour round this little known area of the far North of Vietnam for me.
Starting at Bac Ha with it's near unique Buffalo market and the general market with the women in their colourful mostly hand made clothes.
With Phil and Hoa as my guides we travelled in a big loop which included a relaxing boat trip onTuyen Quang lake, homestays with wonderful people and often lunch with some of the local ethnic groups for example the red Dao , the money Dao, the Tay and the Nung.
There is the opportunity to kayak on Tuyen Quang lake surrounded by waterfalls and the Karst mountains ever bit as stunning as Halong bay , more so as you will probably be the only tourists for miles.
The tour can be changed to suit how much walking / trekking you want to do and is therefore suitable for all ages.
Good food, good company, stunning scenery and most important a guide to inform you of the history of the area and the ethnic groups and their customs.
I will be going back again

With a mix of incredible scenery, and diverse cultures, our Tuyen Quang / Ha Giang special is perhaps the trip we are most proud of. With a minimum of four days, but extendable to to five, six or even seven days, this area offers so much. We offer jungle treks ideal for bird watching and the chance to see some of the worlds rarest primates. We have the chance to kayak and cycle. There are opportunities to fish and swim in stunning waterfalls. We can visit vast caves and cruise along one of Vietnam’s most beautiful lakes. At its core, we spend quality time with local people. Tay homestays, and lunch stops with the Nung and Dao make the cultural aspect of this trip so interesting. For the cultural enthusiast, there is also the opportunity to include visits to the Pa Then, Hmong, Dao Tien, Phu La and La Chi ethnic minority people. All in all, this is Vietnam at its absolute finest and we are delighted that you enjoyed your time with ETHOS so much. We are all very much looking forward to the opportunity to meet you again and show you more of this amazing country.

In februar this year we did the 1 night homestay overnight tour with Hmong guide Pang, who by the way, speaks excellent English. I could not recommend Ethos travel more. We really learnt about the culture of the minority people living in Vietnam. The tour was a tour in a responsible way of travelling by supporting and preserving the local culture. We stayed at Pang and her family and had so much fun, also when we learned her and her friend play UNO :)

You can choose up to the last moment if you want yo stay at a family or if you want to stay in a tourist hostel 'homestay'. I would really advise to choose the first option. You are asked to help with cooking, which was pretty different than at home.

I'd advise to book a tour with Ethos, maybe it is a little bit more expensive than with another (commercial) organisation, but your money is spent in the best way you will do anywhere in Vietnam!!!

Thanks!! Greetings Jaco and Janine from Holland

Your trip with ETHOS was one of the last in the area before national regulations were put in place to restrict travel due to the coronavirus. We hope you are well and keeping in good spirits during this most challenging of times. Despite our closure as a business, our Community Centre remains open as a home and place of refuge. We remain committed to our project work and ongoing support for medical cases continue to be active. We are homeschooling Cha and Phil is trying to earn a temporary basic income through online English teaching at a time where the virus threatens our very existence as an organisation. North Vietnam is an area to be treasured, but knowing just where to travel is what makes the difference. ETHOS experiences take our travellers off the beaten track to places few have the chance to ever visit. Positive interactions with ethnic minority groups are at the heart of every trip and our guides will assure immersion and learning are seamless. Whether you’re interested in wildlife, culture, photography, cuisine, outdoor sports, textiles or just an opportunity to learn, ETHOS experiences have something for you. Thank you for choosing ETHOS and for your fantastic review. We really appreciate your time to write such kind words and we hope to see you again if ever you visit North Vietnam in the future.

From the outset Hoa was fantastic helping me decide on and plan our trek. Every email was answered promptly, every assistance planning our trip given. The trekking itself was an experience to remember forever. Hoa gives you a briefing before you leave so that you can place what you see into context and appreciate your experience with the Hmong people. Our tour guide, My, was such such a genuine, delightful and knowledgeable young Hmung lady who spoke English very well. The walk went through amazing topography, traversing mountain streams, rice paddy's, and corn fields, before climbing through the mountains with awe inspiring views. Lunch with a local family then more trekking past hamlets in the mountains before a most delightful stay in a Hmung house overnight. Basic but adequate facilities including shower and toilet, beautiful host grown food and the most gracious and friendly hosts, with the matriarch speaking very good English. I can't recommend this enterprise enough - the money is shared equitably with guides and hosts, and you will have a unique experience to remember forever. And the cost is very reasonable.

Thank you for this wonderfully honest review Frankie. Your guide, My had a wonderful time walking through her valley with you and we are thrilled to read that you gained so much from your short time spent with her and her community. When we plan our treks, we aim to walk in authentic villages with spectacular scenery, but also leave plenty of flexibility within the day to assure that any trek is ideally suited to those participating. Sharing, home grown, organic food, prepared on an open fire and accompanied by the local “happy water” liquor is something that few people ever get to experience with such authenticity and we are delighted that these are memories that will stay with you for a long time. Thanks again for joining us and we hope to see you again if ever you visit the region again in the future.

I truly enjoyed my trekking experience with May Khim. She’s been on of the most genuine person who so knowledgeable of her culture as well as she speaks very good English. She ensure that my needs are meant especially when my food diet is limited and very accommodative. Khim and her family are very welcoming and make my trip a pleasure one. And the herbal bath was the icing to the cake, especially after the long trekking, the bath helps to soothe those tired muscles.

Having recently returned from a period of paid maternity leave, May kim is enjoying getting back to a job she loves. Over the past two years, she has excelled when faced with ETHOS led first aid training, risk assessment and food hygiene classes. Her local knowledge is exemplary and her grasp of English is going from strength to strength. We are therefore delighted that all of our efforts are paying off and allowed you to experience Sapa as it should be done. We are pleased you enjoyed the hospitality, food and conversation. Thanks again for joining ETHOS in Sapa and we hope to see you again if ever you travel in the region again.

We went for the Buffalo trek, which included meals and one night stay with locals. Everything was Amazing starting from the briefing at Ethos offices to the end of the trek.

Besides walking through stunning landscapes, we had the opportunity to discover culture and lifestyle of ethnic communities, meeting amazing people and sharing with them some of the best moments of our lives.

We recommend this Company if you would like to have an exclusive and authentic experience in Sapa, faraway from tourists and deep inside the territory.

My husband and I did an overnight trek and homestay with ethos and we had the best and most rewarding experience ever! I highly recommend ethos as you will be able to explore the Sapa area in an authentic and meaningful way.

The owner of ethos, Hoa, is so kind and helpful. She answered all of my questions about the trip via WhatsApp, making sure I was comfortable with all the arrangements (and even advising on which shoes to wear!) Just chatting with her in the ethos house was a lovely experience, as it is clear how much she cares about helping the local ethnic minorities in the Sapa area.

Once everything was arranged, we set off on our trip with the lovely My. It was very hot and so My made sure that we were doing ok and let us stop for as many breaks as we needed. She told us all about her life and we learnt so much.

Next we had an incredible lunch with a local family. We helped them prepare the food and drank a lot of rice wine with the Shaman (she insisted!) Everyone at the house was so friendly and it was a lovely meal.

The overnight stay was similar - we helped to prepare vegetables for dinner whilst chatting with My about her community and what it is like to be Hmong. On our second day, we were too tired to walk again (and it was very hot) so we did some embroidery with My and now have gorgeous souvenirs to take home.

Please make sure you book a trip with ethos - you will be doing something very good for the ethnic minorities and you will have such a memorable experience!

We’ve found Ethos via a travel blog online and we are so extremely happy we did.. We signed up for the 2 day 1 night Buffalo Trek and although the website of Ethos is very extensive we still couldn’t have imagined what we would experience. After a very amazing and informative introduction by Hoa and Phil we were introduced to our tour guide Cha. With Cha we walked the Buffalo trek and were invited to her house for lunch, stayed at a home stay and also the next day had a lunch at another home in a different village. During our hike Cha told us everything about the Hmong culture, history and her personal story. We were really invited into her life, personal experiences and home and had an experience we never could have imagined. During our trek we also did not run in to one other tourist which was a nice change from Sapa.

If we could give more than 5 stars we would that is how much we loved it and recommend it! Thank you Hoa, Phil and especially Cha for this unforgettable experience!

Today we had a fantastic day visiting a minority village with our guide, Ker. First we visited the local market to choose food for lunch and then went to the house of a delightful elderly lady, Mae, to cook and share the food. Ker spoke excellent English and we were able to learn a lot about the local tribes and their way of life. The scenery in the area is also stunning! We have been travelling in Vietnam for nearly 3 weeks and out two teenage boys say this is their favourite day so far.
The income generated by Ethos goes to support various social enterprise initiatives which also adds an extra dimension to the experience. You are guaranteed a very well organised, safe, interesting and informative experience with Ethos.

With over 20 years of experience, our social impact business now supports well over 300 people in villages throughout northern Vietnam. We offer immersive, experiential adventures for conscientious travellers by creating unique adventures whilst empowering local minority tribal people in better providing for themselves. We are delighted to hear that you appreciated our historical contextualisation and introduction to the area and thrilled to read that you found your time with Ker to be rewarding and interesting. Sharing a little piece of her life is a very special way to travel and it is great that you enjoyed the stunning landscapes, fantastic food and rich culture. May thoroughly enjoyed hosting you and we are really pleased that your two boys enjoyed their day seeing some of Vietnams least visited regions. Thanks for joining us and of course thank you for your review. On behalf of Ker and all our team, safe travels and we hope to see you again if ever you return to the Sapa area.
