We embarked on the Ketchikan Photo Safari during a Disney Cruise Port Adventure. Our tour guide Jeff taught us so many things about professional-style photography that can be done just from our iPhone! He also taught us about Ketchikan history during our tour and gave us plenty of opportunities to take photos of Ketchikan locations that most tourists wouldn’t think of to get great photos. Jeff’s storytelling technique and playful personality made the tour so much fun. We also didn’t know we would get a personalized photo session from Jeff in the way of teaching how to use composition and lighting. This is a tour we definitely recommend for anyone who wants to learn photography from their phones, especially in our era of social media, and who also wants to immerse themselves in Ketchikan history.

The Photo Safari in Ketchikan, led by Jeff Cusumano and Julie Richie, was one of the highlights of an already spectacular trip along the Inside Passage of Alaska.

The Safari wound through and around the town of Ketchikan, and included several locations that were off the beaten path. Jeff and Julie took us to scenic locales and also to locations with Totem Poles, along the way demonstrating clever techniques to capture the moment, taking advantage of existing lighting and innovative angles that really made the images stand out from the average shot.

Local history past and present was woven throughout the tour, allowing us the opportunity to see the town and surrounding area, and to acquire the images through the eyes of those who live(d) in Ketchikan. Jeff and Julie communicated an understanding of what a Totem Pole means to those who created them, and what they are meant to convey to others.

Jeff was very helpful discussing both photography basics and (in straightforward terms) more advanced tips and tricks to help those with more sophisticated equipment maximize the moment. He was adept at showing the capabilities of the cameras aboard the iPhone and Android phones, demonstrating easy to use, but seldom noticed settings on camera phones that made snapshots look like magazine covers.

I highly recommend including the Photo Safari in Ketchikan in your list of excursions.

Jeff Cusumano took us on a 3 hour tour of places in Ketchikan that presented views worth saving. This is not just a tour that points you at scenic places. He took the time to show us all of his tricks to turn your IPhone into a professional camera. His insight into the use of your phone camera is truly amazing.
I brought a DSLR with 3 lenses and my girlfriend took WAY better pictures with her IPhone than I did.
Jeff showed me tricks on my camera I never knew were available and made me determined to learn how to use my DSLR off of the “Auto” feature.
He is also a terrific guide, explaining the history of Ketchikan and the places we visited as well as being an engaging, friendly and funny host.
This tour is a must.
Thank you Jeff for a terrific experience!

The excursion leader was very high strung, which is ok and we can deal with that, but she was late picking us up then lost the keys to the van and locked us out. After searching for 30 minutes for the keys without success, someone in our party called the number on the van. Rob, the owner, answered and immediately wanted to know how many stops we had made and if we had made it to the gift shop....hello, we are locked out and need to get to our cruise ship.

He did come with another set of keys and to make sure we made at least 6 stops pulled in behind a Walmart to show us a "waterfall" - yes it is off the beaten path I suppose....

Rob was very condescending and rude to several passengers, borderline racist to a couple from NY and not once apologized for the issue. He was purely concerned with getting paid for the excursion by covering enough stops.

Please don't give your money to him - there are better alternatives. (Except the cookie provided was really good....)

Juligian, "someone" called......? why would you be dishonest about that? It was JULIGIAN... that's you, who called me. Sure I wanted to know where you were as your tour had progressed with Theresa so I would have an understanding of how best to solve the issue and insure that you and the other 8 guests had the best experience possible while receiving full value for the Ketchikan Photo Safari tour that everyone had signed up for..... that's my job. At Potlatch Park we offer several sequential segments to our tour: 1st we serve Gourmet Coffee & Cookies, 2nd we visit the Totem Carving Building, 3rd we visit the Native Clan House, Dug-out Canoe and multiple Totem Displays & 4th we visit the Gift Shop / Museum. Your attitude kept you from providing me this basic information because your purse was locked in the van for 30 minutes? Theresa said it was about 10 minutes! Yes my number is on each van in prominent 8 inch font........it really took you 30 minutes to call me? I arrived at your location in 12 minutes, opened the locked van, transferred all the guests and belongings to my van and headed out. YOU announced that we were headed for your cruise ship and I thanked you (sarcastically) for being in charge of everybody......hello. YOU are not in charge. I quizzed the other guests as to how Theresa had done........ that's part of my job as quality control and ALL (except you) responded with very positive comments. I asked when your ship's "All Aboard!" was and estimated we had time for one more stop, one of my favorites, our waterfall. I invite anyone to check out our photos on our website to see this very nice waterfall. All of the guests EXCEPT Juligian (you stayed in the van to pout) got out of the van and shot the waterfall utilizing some of the photo techniques that Theresa had previously taught. You denigrate this waterfall experience because it is near our Walmart? As far as YOU playing the race/condescending card against me, you may have felt that way because I was in charge NOT you and I let you know that fact. I will let my reputation defend myself. In my previous position, I received the "TOUR GUIDE OF THE YEAR" award from Princess Cruise Lines for 10 years in a row. I did the absolute best job I could to remedy the "lost key" dilemma. I responded promptly and professionally. Sorry I did not follow YOUR script but I had other guests who deserved the full tour........... and you DID arrive back at your cruise ship right on schedule, which FACT disputes your "30 minutes looking for a key" claim. PS Theresa did find her keys near where she had been picking up other people's trash in the totem park. They had fallen out of her shirt pocket.

This trip did not live up to the billing and I felt it was a complete waste of money. Theresa Heitman was a kind and enthusiastic host who clearly cares deeply for her community. However, the description leads one to believe that we will be taken to places of photographic interest and that there would be guidance under a professional photographer. Theresa did not have that level of skill either with SLR cameras or phone cameras. We had a very small group of four, but there was no discussion to determine how or where the group would like to spend their time to maximize the experience. In the end we had the least amount of time at the place with greatest photographic interest (cultural village& totem poles) Had I known in advance what i ended up getting I would never have signed up for this excursion.

We do have a set route to visit 7 to 8 separate locations each of which offers unique photographic opportunities. Our guides typically speak about: composition, depth of field, f-Stop, shutter speed, grid lines, macro opportunities, etc. We teach 5 ways to photograph a totem pole, as an example. We do not ask what special sites people want to see. Whales, Moose, Bears, Glaciers???? sure, who would NOT want to photograph those things....... instead we go to sites with GUARANTEED photo opportunities. We don't have moose or glaciers and bears and whales are rare sitings but we do have over 100 5 star reviews from folks that WERE happy with the photo op sites AND the instruction offered. Disappointed could have hired a cab to go to these 8 sites and paid 5X's as much. Most of our guests think the tour is FANTASTIC, SUCH AS THIS GUEST, commenting on Theresa: Sep 11, 2022 jimjangal Princess Cruise Photography Excursion Tripadvisor review: Ketchikan Photo Safari My wife and I took this tour with Theresa on August 15, 2022. Rob, was engaging and informative and taught how to use an iPhone to great effect, it didn’t matter whether you had a mirrorless, DSLR or a an iPhone. The photo opportunities are the same, 8 locations in three hours. The Coffee and cookies where much appreciated and went down a treat.

If you like to shoot photos that are more artistic and pleasing then Benjamin Tyus (guide) will offer expert advise and take you to places around Ketchikan that other tours won't.. Being a small tour of 9 guests you can connect with the guide and learn much about Ketchikan's location and lifestyles. I highly recommend this excursion for photographers of any skill level and any equipment. Ben spent time showing some tips and tricks to make mobile device photos looks amazing.

We spent a very enjoyable 3 hours with Ben showing us historical sites and local beaches. Ben was extremely knowledgeable about both my husband's and my camera. I learned so much from him; how to set up the camera manually to get the best shot possible. He quickly learned the details of my very complex camera and made it easy to get wonderful pictures. I would highly recommend any amateur camera people take this opportunity to see Ketchikan and learn from Ben.

Booking was not registered with the tour provider (the reason it's not 5 stars), but a phone call got everything squared away. My aspiring photographer teen learned more about her camera from Captain Ron in 10 minutes than in a year with her public school teacher. Ron shared plenty of local history, and gave ideas on what would make a great photo. I learned how to do things on my cell phone camera that I hadn't ever explored. Definitely "off the beaten path", but I don't feel like we missed out on anything. Thanks for a nice day in port.

It was a cold and rainy day in Ketchikan when I took this tour, but Julia was great. She took us off the beaten tourist path and worked hard to get us to decent locations in order to get good photos in spite of the weather. She was new to the area but still maintained a wealth of knowledge and made the trip enjoyable for us.

There were only two of on the tour with Julia that day, so distancing was not an issue.
